I have done a couple Nandroid backups of the Nexus 7. Each one was over 6 GB. The largest file is "data.ext4.tar" at 6.00 GB. Nandroids are never much more that 1 GB on my Galaxy Nexus.
The current clockworkMod Recovery version on the Nexus 7 is v5.8.4.3
Anyone know why this file is so big?
No clue but maybe you should try cwm 6.0.0.6, they have smaller backups due to a new backup method

This.
No experience with it yet but it is supposed to drastically shrink your nandroids.
Do you have the option to compress your backup? It takes a little longer, but it reduces the size by a lot.
Thanks, I tried CWM 6.0.0.6, and the backup now is only 1.3 gigs!

I noticed going from my HTC One X to the Nexus 7 that backup sizes have changed drastically and I'm nervous to flash my Nexus 7 because my Nandroid is only ~20mb (a FAR CRY from my 1.2GB Nandroids on my HTC One X).
What's the deal with the compression? Is this CWM Recovery much different than what I had on my One X? Any help would be wicked!!

How big is the blob directory under cwm/backups. Seems the data lives there in thousands of hash files.

Hi, since no one has linked to this, I thought I should make a topic to make it more visible.
Check the link below to find Flashable zips of Ubuntu touch dev preview on your specific Nexus device.

I'm guessing this still wipes the sd card as well

The zips for the Toro version don't wipe the sd card, so I'll assume these won't.
Do you not require the Ubuntu boot IMG for this?

Thank you for the link.
I was able to install Ubuntu with CWM.
Installation works great, no issue.
Doesn't work with my Nexus 4 8GB. Keeps @ the bootingscreen, even after 20 Minutes.
Followed the complete instructions.

wipe are not to wipe. that is the question.
brand new 16gb mako- unlocked- then rooted-cwm installed- downloaded mako file- full fresh wipe- installed mako zip after rebooting- did not boot. is thisa shell that sits atop android?(no wiping required?)

You should factory reset. You need to wipe data. System will already be wiped in the flash.
Also, there are 2 zips to install. You gotta do the mako one and then the generic one.

Any tips on the safest easiest way to root my nexus 7 and also backup everything on it to windows XP
Thanks.

Look up an app called carbon. It will allow you to backup apps from you pre rooted device. Plus, simply plug in your device and backup anything of interest like photos and downloads or music. Then root in your preferred method (wugs root tool in the nexus 7 android development stickies is quite easy). This process will unlock your bootloader (which will wipe your device back to factory state) install a rooted boot.img and custom recovery, and even take care of installing superuser into the stock rom. Once done there, you can then perform any backups within the device itself via titanium backup for user apps (system apps can cause issues). Also you can use your new custom recovery to create a full system backup called a nandroid backup (that can later be stored off device for safety of you like.

Another vote f or Wug's NRT. Too easy.
Fire it up, backup, unlock, root, and restore.
Wug's toolkit was awesome for me as well

Yes it is possible. First unlock your bootloader, then root it using wugs toolkit.

It would be better to do it right when you get it before you install apps and save data in it.
Nexus Toolkit works great, too. I haven't tried Wugs, but I'm gonna give it a try another time when I root someone else's N7.
I am backup my System image via TWRP and OTG too an external hd.
My internal Files I am also backup via OTG: I am use rsync. Using the adb backup method is also possible, but for me it is very slow and a bit insecure I think... I trust TWRP.
Thanks everyone. Still deciding if I'm gonna do it or not.

Just unlock your bootloader if anything. That's all I did. The Nexus 7 is not preloaded with useless bloatware, so I didn't feel the need to root, and proceed any further. I even got the OTG cable to work on stock ROM, and I don't really care about any custom ROMs.

I've been searching for an explanation to this, haven't had any luck. I used ROMToolbox on my Nexus 10 to change recoveries (TWRP 2.5.0.0 > 2.3.3.0) and it worked without any problem. I tried the same thing with my Vivid and got an "illegal instruction" error.
I was on CM ROM at the time, so I switched to PAC to see if that made any difference. It didn't. I finally got it installed using flash_image. I'm under the impression ROMToolbox's script uses flash_image, so I'm wondering if anyone knows why it didn't work that way
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
I would assume ROM toolbox tried to flash your recovery to the wrong partition...
Sent from my Vivid 4G using Tapatalk 2
Thanks. But that seems like a fairly large glitch on ROMToolbox's part. Wouldn't all Android devices have the same partition structure? Or is there something unique about HTC devices?
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
Not all phones are partitioned in the same manor... hence the guess

I'm currently running CM 10.1.2 in rom slot 1 as my only rom. Unfortunately I don't think the 2 gb data partition I created at the beginning is going to be enough for much longer... does anybody know a good way to deal with this? Is there a way to resize a partition after creating it?

I don't believe you can resize the partition after creating it. What you can do is back up your CM slot, delete the slot, recreate it with a larger data partition, and then restore your CM backup.
That makes sense... thanks kwyrt!

Is there any disadvantage creating a rom slot like it can lessen the lifespan of phone's internal memory?

Just boot in to safestrap, select "Backup", select where you want to save it, name it, then slide the toggle and it will back up your current ROM slot. Piece of cake.

Necro-ing to say this worked for me. Thanks kwyrt.
I didn't even realize I made a small slot until I went for months fighting against space limitations, wondering why DiskUsage wasn't recognizing all of my internal storage. Slot1 has been such a daily (read: only) driver that I didn't even think about safestrap's slot partitioning.
So basically I think that the time has come just like it did to cwm to say bye to titanium backup. It's served me well over the years but I'm having issues with it restoring some apps+data. I get hangs ect so was looking for a good alternative. Rooted ROM ect so yes. Suggestions Gentlemen pls

Haven't tried restoring straight from TIBU but making a TIBU zip and flashing in TWRP works for me.
Oh yeah I forgot about that fuction after a period of stock lol. I'll try it next time.
