Multitouch crossing axis - Nexus 7 General

Hi,
Is anybody else having issues with the multitiouch when crossing axis. See below videos from youtube. This looks more like a software issue that will affect all devices. You can test with a multitouch tester app
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gz27tAD1IBQ
Edit: Try the test with the tablet laying down on a flat surface and also try holding it on an angle and report results. It seems to be occuring alot when it is flat.

If this is anything like the Nexus One, this is a hardware limitation that can't be fixed. I can't believe that they would use such an inferior multi touch sensor at this time. Even my Galaxy Tab (the first ever Android tablet) has proper 10 point multi touch.

I ran this a day or so after I got mine and I had that issue but when I run it now it works fine.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

just downloaded a multitouch tester app from the playstore and it works fine. I can hit up to 9 fingers before it starts getting weird and slightly jumping about.
I used to have the HTC desire which had the same problem as the Nexus One, that was annoying as hell, but this, so far, is great.
I am on Modaco Rom with a stock kernel.

Both of my Nexus 7s exhibit this same behavior when I use Multitouch Visible Test, but I have noticed no issues when playing games or doing anything else for that matter.

Non issue on my N7, rooted stock.

i don't have the device yet but after crossing axis, do the two touchpoints work as normal or do they flip i.e the bottom finger movement is causing the top touch circle to move and the top finger movement causing the bottom circle to move? this was an issue on older generation phones

That is my video. It does flip but flips right back . Its just very erratic. Shows extra touches, flips them and doesnt hold steady ( flashes)
edit
It also happens with more touches aswell. for example 8 then it wont read them at all to i lift them up when i cross axis

haha thanks for the video. Yeah i thought i would post it in here to see how many people have the issue. So when you say it flips and then flips right back, you mean that it eventually switches back to the correct touch points where it is able to detects your two fingers correctly right?

Works fine here in two different multiouch testers. I do get the 180 degree flips in Dead Trigger though so I'm thinking there's something up with the game itself as well.
Edit: It works fine so long as the N7 is held. Flat on its back on a surface and it glitches as shown in the video. Intriguing. Anyone want to do some follow up testing on this?

I get 180 flips on my Galaxy Nexus as well, so I'm guessing it's software!

As long as the axis aren't crossed it registers my touches correct

wsrider: Did you see my edited post about mine only occurring when flat on a surface? I'm curious if yours is erratic while held as well.

It depends on the angle you hold the Nexus7 it starts swapping and getting crazy in one position, but sometimes doesn't.
As zinfinion says, on flat surface it gets buggy for sure. Sometimes in other positions.
Can anyone with KANG CM10 put their nexus7 on flat surface and try to replicate the video?

I tried a euroskank cm10 kang it made no difference which rom I used also tried paulobrien's rom. same results

I just tested mine and it is doing this as well. I had noticed erratic behavior while playing dead trigger and occasionally the keyboard not picking up key presses. I don't know what to do, if I should try to get a replacement or wait for a firmware update.

So should we return it to Google(hardware problem) or will they fix it with an update?
Everyone please download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.batterypoweredgames.mtvistest and test

i have edited the OP to explain the flat surface scenario

I've tried to do it, but i couldn't replicate the issue.

Everyone having this issue please check your HW Version by booting into fastboot and checking. I have this issue and have HW Version ER3.

Creaky hardware?

Is anyone having basic build quality issues with the NC hardware? I just exchanged my first one because it had a mushy power button that didn't click, and the replacement i find makes a creaking noise whenever i grab it by the left side. I know it's going to drive me crazy if I don't exchange it again.
I haven't experienced any of those... in fact I find the construction to be quite solid. Bad batch maybe?
I returned my first Nook Color because there was a dust speck in the screen. I couldn't rub it out and it kept bothering me so I brought it back to B&N and they gave me a brand new one. I wonder what they will do with the one I gave them. Everything seemed to work except that one dust particle in the screen.
Mine had a dead pixel which awoke after a bit of use, but other than that (and I'm picky) it's been really solid. The touchscreen is a bit wacky at times, but that could be me - I have extremely dry skin and that can cause issues.

Funny, I am having the exact same issue with my NC. Creaky left side. Kinda makes a 'click' noise in about a one inch spot on the left middle by the screen. Kind of annoying but I suppose I'll live with it..
Definitely experiencing the creaking as well, and now I am noticing the back left side has some 'give' to it, allowing me to actually push it in slightly. The right side is perfectly firm. Anyone else notice this? Only had it for a few days, so if this is an isolated issue I will return/exchange it.
Thanks
+1 mushy power button here too.
no dead pixels though so I think i'm going to keep it.. I've got 'QuickBoot' installed anyways as a workaround
Mine is creaky, too. Everything that matters (to me) appears to be working well.
The top frame may be a 'snap-on' thing that snaps-on from right to left resulting in a bit of a space on the left side about a 1/3 of the way up. I'm sure most folks are sensing/feeling/hearing the 'creak', especially when moving through different ambient temperatures.
Touch and squeeze most of your devices (notebooks, phones) that are composed of different materials, e.g. plastic and metal, and, more than likely, they 'creak', too.
I have the creaking too. I thought about exchanging it but I don't really notice it anymore.
I returned my first nook color because of the creaking on the right side. It only happened after the device warmed up.
The second one is now doing the same thing on the left back. As much as I love it, it doesn't seem very solid.

Yeah i've got the creak top left corner. Doesn't bug me much but I do plan on keeping an eye on it.
I've got the creaky left side too. It hasn't bugged me too much, but the USB cable did catch on fire when I plugged it into my Nook this morning.
So that was fun.

The first NC I brought home had a dust particle right in the middle of the screen, too. Exchanged it, and the new one creaks right below the N button. No power button issues, though!

Ahaha, funny joke. !.
I'm thinking of returning mine too. I have creaking. Anyone else have a bowed panel where the home button is? The left side is about a 0.5 mm lower then the center and the right side is about 0.25 mm lower then the center.
Such a shame. It is nice device. Its the best built android device I have seen.

Seriously, the USB cable sparked and caught fire when I plugged my Nook Color into it this morning.
It didn't appear to damage the Nook, but the USB cable end is burnt and blackened.
Needless to say I'll be taking it back.
I'll take some pictures in a bit.
Took some pictures, I'll post them when I get 8 posts under my belt and can post pictures.

You know, that actually doesn't sound far fetched to me. For some reason the USB cable does not want to work in 2 of my known working USB slots. Windows gives me the standard "USB root hub has detected a power surge" message. So it wouldn't surprise me at all if it caught fire. I plan on seeing about a third party cable if I keep running into weirdness with it.

[q]s-pen= awful

Does anybody else find the S.pen of the SGN really bad??.. when it comes to drawing some stuff..? Any remedy for that?

i don't draw but i do annotate quite a lot, and it feels like the calibration is a bit off. what in particular about it is your concern?
Like, the place where i point the pen and the place where it writes is not the same, the location where it writes is a little bit to the upper left( not precise)... and its also has a latency after writing...
Its not a very big problem for me just a little critic...

I've used five s-pens so far, and two of them were significantly worse than the other three. Good news is that the problem is most likely with the pen itself and not with the Note!
Try getting a different pen (e.g. there is an official Samsung holder that comes with another pen). For the offset problem, try to switch from right to left to right... several times --- sometimes that helps to make the offset more reasonable. Also experiment with the angle of the Note as you write, often that makes a difference too.
Just my two cents...
The reason why it seems a bit of is done on purpose.
You notice this when you change your writing hand in the settings.
When it's set to your right hand, the drawing is slightly left of your pen. With the left hand it's the other way around.
This is done so you can see what you are drawing/writing and your hand is not in the way.
I know it sucks, but Samsung made it this way.

This is true, but some pens have larger offset than the others. I think some of them have sensitive elements inside aligned better. And actually this works rather nicely if the offset is reasonable, at least for me. Takes a bit of practice, but feels quite natural after a while... if you think about it, some offset is appropriate, since there are three surfaces at different depths: the writing surface, the "displaying" surface, and the actual surface which is sensitive to the pen's movements (this one is quite deep, it's behind the screen, not in front of it)...
Try different pens before giving up
Yeah the calibration is not exact to the point. When I'm writing words normally I'm not really affected, only when it comes to drawing in slow motions, the placement is off and it's frustrating for drawing little details.
However, I managed to dig out an old stylus which came with my ancient fujitsu tablet PC and it's calibrated perfectly.
I've noticed that the angle to which I hold the s-pen to the surface makes a difference in percieved accuracy.

With the Fujitsu pen, does it have calibration issues or extra lines if you write on it upside down, like if you were lying on your back? My biggest pet peeve with this phone is that I can only use the pen if I'm sitting upright and holding the pen just so, otherwise calibration is way off and a lot of unintended lines appear.

I've noticed this too. It's most apparent to me when I set my phone on a table, holding the pen by it's very end. Touching the screen with the point and changing the angle of the pen relative to the screen--without moving the tip of the pen;s position at all--you can see the cursor move with the angle of the pen, even though the tip stays in one place.
The best way to fix this, in my mind, is for Wacom to do on this phone what they do for a lot of their tablets--have a little dot show up on the screen when you hover your pen, so you know where you'll be drawing.

Nexus 7 Screen turns off when pressure applied while holding

When holding the Nexus 7 (portrait mode) and applying slight pressure on each side, the screen turns off and only returns when I remove the pressure. Am I the only one experiencing this?
I've uploaded a quick video demonstrating this:

I reported this problem to Google and they sent me a replacement which worked perfectly - however when I put it in my wallet it had the same problem. The original Nexus also worked perfectly out of the wallet. I determined that the problem was the autosleep sensor which is triggered by the magnet in the wallet cover when it is closed. However if the wallet cover is opened and folded flat behind the Nexus the magnet is close to the sensor but at the back of the Nexus; since the magnet is still pretty close to the sensor it is triggered when the lower left of the screen is pressed (where the sensor is).
The solution for my wallet was to fold the cover into a triangle using the folds - this also makes the wallet easier to hold.
I still very occasionally get the problem when I move the magnet so I think that the sensor is a bit too sensitive.

You're exactly right!
I noticed just minutes ago the screen turning off immediately after I put down the device. It did this several times w/o a "problem", so I became worried and looked for the answer to this problem online. When I saw your post and read the word "magnet" a little light went on in my head -- I was placing the device on the loudspeaker! Apparently, the sensor in the back was picking the magnetism from within the loudspeaker enclosure (i.e. from the tweeter driver magnet)
Phew! First screen glass going loose, now this with screen going off -- I was getting real worried these Nexuses were cursed
Heh same thing started happening to me, thought the onboard graphics was faulty until I found this thread. Turns out it was the magnet on my case causing it, and getting a bit worn in that it's touching the back of my nexus now!
Same happens to me, I'm just about to exchange it, not sure if i should anymore.

Maybe a faulty device or software issue, I remember I had the same issue 1 month back in my XPERIA SP when kept on flat (not table something soft like pillow or bed) touch din't used to work getting a replacement fixed it but after a while it came back but the latest firmware update on SP had fixed that issue, so I highly doubt it is firmware issue still chances are there that it can be hardware related.

I'm pretty sure this is how capacitive touchscreens work. They need your other hand or fingers touching another part of the phone to register touches accurately.
Handsets like the HTC Sensation had contact points between the shell and phone to connect them. if these contacts got dirty the touch screen acted up!
Only other thing I can think of is a screen protector, though I have one installed and the lightest touches respond fine.

Actually, laying it flat on a table just makes the problem happen more often. I get this annoying issue once or twice daily while normally holding my phone either while walking, sitting, or sleeping.. The last software update made it occur less frequently than before, and I tried rebooting my phone this one time that the issue was persisting and wouldn't go away, and the reboot fixed it for almost a whole day. I'm almost sure this is a software issue, but if it is, I don't know why it only happens with some phones (or maybe others don't notice it as it happens quite rarely? I notice it especially when I'm swype typing..)

Went to the shop, and the guy told me they can take it in, and send it to the tech department, but since they need to replicate the issue themselves to be able to replace a phone, and seeing as how this issue only happens once or twice a day with my phone (regardless of being on a flat surface or not) he said they'll prolly send it back saying there's nothing wrong with it.. Told me to wait for future updates, and if it still ain't fixed by then, to sell my phone and buy something other than the Z1. Lol.
See my touchscreen issues here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z1/Z1-Touchscreen-issue/m-p/447765/highlight/false#M6303
I have the same issue and its not about laying it because i get it sometimes when using the phone in one hand or on move and it makes it only sometimes not always.

Video Die/Burn out?

So, been having the issue where the touchscreen doesn't respond.. fnally did the recovery and put t back to stock and didnt root.. let it run and do its nstalls and then DL'd subway surfers again.played it for maybe 10-15min max and it started doing t agan.. i went ot home screen and back to game and the chararters and items were black and then it had a hard time rsponding like it was sluggish and not reacting.
is it possible the video card or whatever may be "burned" ut or somthn.. nto sure what else to do.. any ideas? and would i call att or who to try and fix/swap out if u think its video?

Does it do it at other times without playing the game first?

Yes.. i thought it might be the game too, but sometimes ill just be swiping through the homescreens, app drawer, and othe rthings. it just doesn't respond.
right now i am testing something. I had/have the S-view flip case on it.. so i took that off and put the stock backing back on it. ive been playing it for a bit and so far nothing.. but.. the phone is also cold as F right now so not sure if its just that the phone hasn't heated up to possibly trip it or if thew s-view case really could be the culprit...
does this sound possible? i am most likely stopping by BB today since still within my 45days and going to possibly try and swap it out, and i think i might stay away from the s-view case.. never really used that screen anyway and the bumper protection is non existent.. haven't dropped the phone and there is already a slight nick on the side just from being in pocket.
I use an Otterbox case myself so i am not sure how an s-view fits. I have found in the past with some case if they have a lip that extends over the edge of the display it can sometimes cause false touches if it is touching the digitizer area on the display. If it touches in more than one spot this could confuse the display in that it does not know if you are tapping, swiping, or pinching.

Definitely root first with RDLV. Once you take the OTA you run the risk of the bootloader being patched and can potentially screw yourself out of a chance of getting a real recovery in the future.

Ive noticed that some games just genuinely do NOT like the 1920x1080 resolution and the buttons have very small sections that actually work. A few games require me to use the s-pen to actually tap the buttons to go through menus. thought my digitizer was having issues until i found out almost everything else works perfectly in those same spots.
