Despite going through several threads here and somewhat failing on easy rooting, found a one-click via YouTube, MotoFail_Windows something or other I believe it was. Seems simple enough.
However, in looking through Android Development here for this device, there doesn't appear to be many ROMs, am I missing something? Had no idea so much effort would be spent making this phone work for GSM folks. Any and all help for a newbie D4 owner who has every intention on rooting/flashing/tethering in the very near future is MUCH appreciated.

Rooting is pretty easy. I would recommend using jsnweitzel's Droid 4 Utility. Super easy to use.
Unfortunately you're not missing something in regard to ROM development. It's really fallen off here recently. Best thing to do currently is probably update your D4 to the most current Moto ICS leak. The CM9 and AOKP builds for the leaks are fairly stable. If you don't want to go that route I would recommend myfishbear's Eclipse port for GB.
The good news is it sounds like hashcode (main D4 dev) is getting closer to getting us up and running with the kexec kernel exploit that will allow custom kernels. Hopefully, once that gets going, ROM development will pick back up.

There really are no good GSM QWERTY phones out there right now. There's a couple of Blackberry-style ones which are awful and the Sony Xperia Mini which is also awful. Both have tiny keyboards. Most GSM QWERTY people seem to be hanging onto their old HTC Desire Z (which you will know as the T-Mobile G2) or coming here and getting a Droid 4. There really aren't any other options.
For US folk wanting custom ROMs. The process is actually the same as getting GSM support, root, flash the latest ICS leak, install safestrap, install either AOKP or CM9. You can follow my guide for getting GSM to work since it's actually the same process.
I've added to the OP instructions for putting AOKP or CM9 on there, both of them are the same low level stuff, produced by Hashcode, with the ROM-specific framework grafted on top.
Awesome input, thanks guys (and gal). Unfortunately the kid trying to sell it apparently was unaware the phone was active in his "brothers" name. This is of course after calling Verizon to make sure the phone was clean. $280 in the box, my instincts should've kicked in but the kid actually seemed sincere. Ah well, still keeping my eyes peeled and will eventually get one so this is helpful info. Thanks again.

Alright, I currently have an Incredible. I have yet to root it, because I'm thinking about using my 30 day satisfaction guarantee to switch for the DroidX. Now, from my understanding, root is essentially inevitable on all phones. However, the Incredible has custom ROMs available already, whereas from reading a thread elsewhere, it's looking like it will be nigh impossible to get custom ROMs for the DroidX? Is this true? Does that mean the Incredible is unsigned?
I was considering switching to the DroidX because of the bigger screen, better video and sound quality, among other reasons. Should I still consider this, or am I better off sticking with my Incredible?
The Inc. bootloader apparently will work with non-signed ROMs. Motorola has started to make their bootloaders check for a valid digital signature on any ROM it starts to load. If there is not a valid digital signature on the ROM, it won't load it. Therefore you cannot load a custom ROM with that type of bootloader. It hasn't been determined if the bootloader on the X will only work with digitally signed ROMs, but that is the expectation.
Whether or not you care depends on what you expect to do with the phone. Many people don't care to load custom ROMs. If the manufacturer keeps up with development, then the need for custom ROMs drops even further. There will always be those people that want to play around and tweak ROMs, but the general poplulation won't bother with ROMs.
It just depends on what you want to do.....
This is purely a guess... but I would venture to say the X will be rooted at some point. I'm basing this off the assumption nothing new is being implemented here. I can't imagine this phone is suddenly using some new technology that cannot be cracked.
But who knows. Only time will tell.

As I understand it, the Milestone is the only phone Motorola has locked down the ability to load unsigned roms. Is it also the only Android phone released by Motorola since the Droid? How can we know if this is something they simply decided to do after they released the Droid or if it was a one-off? I've read they said they will require signed roms on all future phones, but who knows. I thought the Droid was vanilla android, is the milestone not. If it runs without a manufacturer custom UI, what's the point of locking it down?
I dropped my iPhone in the lake a month ago, but was planning on replacing it in July with an Android phone anyway. I was waiting for the Evo, and now the Droid X but I don't think I can wait any longer without a phone. Reading all the reviews of the Droid X I've just ignored all critisism of the UI assuming I'd be able to throw vanilla Froyo on there within a few days when the community released something. This is really discouraging and sorry to say even with the Motorola UI I think it's still my best option. As a side rant, I know it's been said before, but I don't see how this is any different than buying a computer and not being allowed to put whatever OS I want on it as long as I can find drivers. It seems like the sort of thing the FTC would go after Dell or HP for doing, so why should smart-phones be any different, especially unsubsidized? In short, to answer your question, I'd like to not have the annoyance of feeling like MY hardware is being arbitrarily limited by the manufacturer, even if their custom android "does" everything I need it to.
What if you wanted to do development on your phone and not just virtual consoles on your computer. In a year or two is your only option going to be a designated development phone like the Nexus One? I can see why it has little effect on Motorola, people who care make up a very small percentage, but shouldn't Google care enough to step in and prevent Motorola from doing this?

From what I understand, there's a[n experimental?] method to bypass the bootloader entirely on the milestone, and slip in a custom ROM that way. I think it's called kextern.

Once it's rooted, yes, you could easily do that. However if you don't like the psuedo-blur UI, there would be no way to get rid of that if the bootloader is encrypted.

Installing something like LauncherPro will go a long way towards removing the blur-like elements on the droidx. Getting rid of the motorola widgets and using a 3rd party launcher brings you fairly close to a stock android experience.
about DroidX development
The developer will need to CUSTOM make it for the EVO.
I'm curious. I have a Motorola Xoom that is rooted using ADB. My Thunderbolt, which is now retired, was rooted with Revolutionary. I got my Bionic on Thursday, and I'm nearly ready to root it.
So I've been reading the forums, and the different root methods. I still have a few questions, like how come the different system versions are such a huge issue. They were an issue on the Thunderbolt to a point, but only like with MR1 and MR2.
What's the best and easiest root method that has an equally easy unroot. Directions are good. This'll be the fourth device rooted by me, so I'm getting very comfortable with it, but this is a new device. Plus, I always want to make sure I know my back door route extremely well, before walking in the front door.
Last, and this one I haven't done a lot of research on yet. How much has been done towards rom's and kernels. I know in some of the older posts, people were talking about the locked bootloader. Surely that's been gotten around?

The Bionic is my first smartphone and so I am very new to rooting. I tried a couple of rooting options (PetesMotorolaRootTools_v1.07 and R3l3AS3DRoot, which is specific to the Bionic). Both worked, but I had issues with v1.06 of Pete's and so I tried the R3Root and it worked. I like how it has an option to factory restore the phone, since I did screw up with something and I had to restore, due to my inexperience. It's also a much quicker process, doesn't need to reboot a bunch of times. You can find them both here on XDA. I can give you direct links once I find them.

Was wondering if anyone could explain the different version, like the .901, I think it is.
I plan on rooting tomorrow or Tuesday. Is there any particular ROM or radio that'll help with the data drop issues, or are those Verizon issues in general on 4G. Never had a problem on my Thunderbolt. My wife has started having data drop issues on her's, and the Bionic has them several times a day. Read somewhere that it might be tied in with battery management, which makes sense.

I been obsessed lately, trying to find something that works with our new D4's. I flashed Arctic's VZW rom after rooting my phone and....it works! I have tested SMS/MMS, GPS and phone calls with no issue. The only think that i have noticed right off the bat is that the keyboard does not light up, which I am assuming is because the necessary drivers obviously were not in place for the Razr. With this being said, I would thikn CM7 as well as other Razr roms WILL work with our phones. I'm glad we have at least something now.....

If its anything like using the VZW 6.11.748 Razr Roms on 6.12.173 Razr then I believe enabling bluetooth will cause a reboot. Could you try that?
Also I am working with someone to bring Arctic to 2.3.6... it sounds like it would probably work better on D4 too.
You are 100% correct. Bluetooth causes a reboot. Seems to be a common problem. I am looking into it still and I edited my OP

This is because 2.3.6 introduced a new bluetooth, but the Rom is based on 2.3.5 that's why it won't work.
I am very interested in how this works out. The new EclipseRom and IC3Razr may work on it too... I will be trying them when I get my Droid 4 tomorrow (I hope)

Great man....thanks for trying. I been racking my brain doin this. I have extracted the orginal bluetooth apk from our devices and am trying to reimplement it but im running into issues. I believe that will solve the issue.
have any pics of your phone running this ROM? i dont want to do any major modding of my phone until the sbfs have been released/leaked
If you're that worried I would wait unti something comes along more comfortable for you. For screenshots click the link in post 1. Its the same...

I understand people being hesitant in trying this out but I would not waste anyone's time making up a lie that it works just to have people mess up their phone. I'm not an official dev but I am telling you it works. Whether anyone tries it, is on them. I'm only trying to help get our development for the D4 working. I am using Eclipse right now also, without issue.

No sir...I dont think until we get one specifically for our D4 are we gonna see that. It should just be a matter of a system file from our dump and throwin it in whatever rom we're using. The reason the Razr roms are working is because the hardware is identical with the exception of the display. The issues we are having with Bluetooth, Market and some other apps has nothing to do with the hardware of our devices. It's because most of the Razr roms were not created with the latest OS update , which all of the D4 owners have. My knowledge is limited with dev'ing but if anyone else wants to chime in on this, please feel fee....

I believe I found the file. I am going to try implementing it into the beta-build of Arctic for Droid 4. "lights.spyder.co" to "lights.maserati.co" sounds legit lol.
I fixed bluetooth today. Market will think you are on a Razr until I get the build.prop out for ya too.

I think its really important when you are working without the safety net of a full XML.zip restore file, that you make it very clear with extremely dire warnings that nobody should use these ROMs until there is a way to recover properly. Average users should NOT attempt this under any circumstances and by posting about it here, you need to be responsible because you will create a wave of bricked devices. This has already started, if you note the post in the main forum briteyes has bricked her phone loading this ROM.
I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but somebody has to come out and say it, sorry.

Very wise words cellzealot. I've seen to many people messing up their phones right now and not all of them were rom related, removed to much while getting rid of bloatware.
I'm holding off even rooting mine until there is rsd recovery files as a backup before I take the plunge. I know the rooting part is safe, just don't feel like unlocking the gates of trouble without a backup plan.
If it wasn't for people testing the limits, development would be a much slower process. I was one of the first to use the root, toy with freezing bloatware and test a bunch of the root-required apps. It is obvious that ROM flashing is a risky process, even with a restore, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done.
I am also amused by how many people have said "I don't want to root until..." since the root has been entirely stable since day 1. If you can't trust yourself to be responsible with the root abilities, why even bother posting right now when everything is in the alpha stages for this phone since it came out less than 2 weeks ago.
This is the DEVELOPMENT forum... testing and risk are implied for anything that gets posted here.

The root is stable, but the people rooting are NOT.
You see the posts of people deleting their own /system/apps/ folder?
CellZealot is very right in what he saying and it did have to be said. Without fastboot files and heck even without a factory-style cable it is not safe to be a crack flasher on this device.

People are never happy..... like you said it's a developmental forum. If they aren't somewhat knowledgeable with flashing roms or how the process works, they should read up before saying anything at all. This is all free and people put hard work into developing things. If you want a disclaimer, go to Best Buy.

Ok, I'm a pretty savvy guy as far as Android is concerned, normally, but being that our beloved AHD is so different, I'm having some trouble deciding whether to pull the trigger on some of our newest options as far as dev-work is concerned.
I know that Mattlgroff & Hashcode are 2 of the best known names in Motodev. Before the AHD, I had the (now) OG RAZR, but CWM was available as a custom recovery... I'm not used to SS, and I'm a little tentative to flash anything with some of the problems I've seen some have... To be honest, the only reason I came to the AHD is I lost my job a year ago, and haven't been able to find work outside of my fiancée's daycare. I CAN'T jack this phone up, cause I can't afford to replace it... I want mattlgroff's ROM, but with all the unfamiliar steps, I have to admit I'm a lil scurred... Lol.
Is there any chance someone could provide a step by step, "how to" coming from stock rooted to ROMified with links to correct backwards & forward files? Seems as though a lot of what's been posted assumes that you have knowledge of SS, and such, which I think many of us may not have...
Sorry to request such a FAQ, but it's possible that it could help a large number of those who are already having problems...

Flashable ROM is out now... WiFi not working yet but it runs just as good, maybe even better than before.

Probably a reference to JoyOS, an iOS cloned theme that was last seen around the time CM 7 was still the most popular ROM. To my knowledge the original Chinese forum which was doing the heavy lifting abandoned this quite some time ago. With the exception of the Goophone I don't think anyone is doing full conversion ROMs which resemble iOS anymore and their systems don't seem to have been dumped and translated yet, which by this time indicates there is no interest.

That explains the reason why there's no more ios rom creation. But, what about MIUI? The os of MIUI has dramatically evolved over the past 4 years. Am I tripping, or is it that no one wants to take a crack at creating a rom for us little guys for devices such as the HTC Desire 626s?

Believe it or not rom creation is hard and relies on having the sources available (which not all companies will do--HTC used to be better than most about this which is why I took a chance on this phone) and on having developers who have the phone and are capable\willing to do the hard work of making a complete AOSP or Cyangogenmod version of the base operating system. Only after that has been completed do you usually start to see more exotic systems like MIUI, Mokee, ParanoidAndroid, etc, get ported over. Even then there's a dirty little secret about Android roms:
Most of them never get 100% compatibility and hardware support. Ever. Despite the best efforts of the porters.
I had an HTC One V which did well for its time but the camera never quite made it to 100% hardware support. Same thing with bluetooth. My LG Optimus F3 never quite got anywhere with roms and eventually I gave up on it and moved on to the HTC Desire 626s which despite some solid efforts at producing the slimmed down version I am currently running also does not seem to have any real custom android roms.
This goes back to my first point: Rom creation is hard.
That's why even when people put up bounties and buy phones for well known rom hackers who have produced many ports, it still doesn't always result in new roms. Because it's a lot harder than it looks.
I was spoiled initially, I had an LG Optimus V which quickly had a custom rom built for it with very good hardware support which was lean and clean. There were custom kernels for it and it quickly had all sorts of ports of everything from CM7 to JoyOS to MIUI to Mokee and friends within a relatively short period of time. It was the little phone that could and I mistakenly believed that because lightening struck and all sorts of good things were happening this was how it always was. Not even close to the case.
I got lucky. The LG Optimus V was cheap enough that it attracted all sorts of interest from a variety of the right people at the right time. This kind of thing isn't even close to being normal. Some times you get lucky, sometimes you don't.
So why not MIUI? Well I'm sorry to say but for one thing MIUI is heavy. It's heavy like Touchwiz or Sense can be, and that sort of thing can only be helped with massive amounts of optimization. Sadly not every phone has a developer (or group of developers) who are willing to do that sort of thing for free.
So all I can say is appreciate the level of development we've got and be thankful for the work of the developers who have released a slimmer rom for us already. If you need a MIUI rom for your phone, you should probably track the releases here before buying. If you check the forums, you'll see you are not alone. There are lots of people who want MIUI ports.

My LG Optimus F3 never quite got anywhere with roms and eventually I gave up on it and moved on to the HTC Desire 626s which despite some solid efforts at producing the slimmed down version I am currently running also does not seem to have any real custom android roms.
This goes back to my first point: Rom creation is hard.
That's why even when people put up bounties and buy phones for well known rom hackers who have produced many ports, it still doesn't always result in new roms. Because it's a lot harder than it looks.
I was spoiled initially, I had an LG Optimus V which quickly had a custom rom built for it with very good hardware support which was lean and clean. There were custom kernels for it and it quickly had all sorts of ports of everything from CM7 to JoyOS to MIUI to Mokee and friends within a relatively short period of time. It was the little phone that could and I mistakenly believed that because lightening struck and all sorts of good things were happening this was how it always was. Not even close to the case.
I got lucky. The LG Optimus V was cheap enough that it attracted all sorts of interest from a variety of the right people at the right time. This kind of thing isn't even close to being normal. Some times you get lucky, sometimes you don't.
So why not MIUI? Well I'm sorry to say but for one thing MIUI is heavy. It's heavy like Touchwiz or Sense can be, and that sort of thing can only be helped with massive amounts of optimization. Sadly not every phone has a developer (or group of developers) who are willing to do that sort of thing for free.
So all I can say is appreciate the level of development we've got and be thankful for the work of the developers who have released a slimmer rom for us already. Thank you. You have truly answered my questions, even ones I wondered about but didn't ask. I am greatly satisfied with what you have said. I understand that rom creation is hard and it can take a toll on the one creating the rom. It's not an easy task. I to had a Samsung galaxy epic 4g touch, which had all sorts of roms for it. But also knowing from experience, you are correct. It is a hit and miss sometimes with some devices you buy. Maybe as newer devices are created, the ability to create ROMs for them gets harder because of the upgraded technology and coding. I could be wrong. On the miui official site, they is a list of devices that they support. But most of them are old school and i surely wouldn't want to take a step down from this phone just to have miui. Then the newer phones in some cases cost more than this phone(referring to the HTC desire 626). I do appreciate the effort that has been put forth for a slimmed down version for this phone. But what I've asked in previous threads was whether or not there is root access yet for the mm update for the metro PCs version of the HTC desire 626s. No bites what so ever. I'm guessing either there isn't any or I'm just not coming across it yet. Any help on that would be highly appreciated. But all in all, I would really like to say thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I appreciate that. You have brought some clarity to the table. I wouldn't mind help supporting a developer who would be willing to create an miui rom for our device once a cyanogenmod version is acquired.

By any chance would you mind telling me how you rooted it? I know how to unlock the bootloader, but where do I get the custom recover from and su?

The custom recovery is posted in this thread and used this> supersu.zip, fastboot flash the recovery and then flash the supersu.zip in recovery. After flashing supersu and booting up install busybox.
BUT don't forget to make a backup, just incase.

Thank you sir for the info. I am unlocked and rooted again. Now, I'll sit back and wait for some debloated roms to pop up for 6.0.1 2.17.1550.1 Metro PCS.
Hey, if you're still interested in Miui, you could try installing the launcher app, see if that gives you enough of the miui experience to get by until someone eventually makes a port?

My bad. Here I found the app in my Play Store history, (from before Google made it country specific?) and installed it. It immediately crashed but stayed open. From there I updated it from within the launcher settings and it crashed again. Just as I was about to give up I had a brainstorm and went back into settings and turned off the lockscreen. This made it stop crashing for me. I hunted around for Beautiful Widgets and replaced the clock and installed miui theme for it and everything looks good from here.
So I installed Titanium Backup and uploaded the app. Hopefully this helps you.
