Hello all,
I was wondering what the perfect compromise between performance and battery life and style would be. My budget is $3000.
I have been looking at mostly HP's and Asus's.
Any suggestions?

That's quite a bit to work with... looked at G75VW? Could easily afford that, a SSD, and some more accessories for it... Asus is better built in my opinion...
What do you want it for? Gaming, desktop replacement, screen size, what weight etc.

Stay away from HP, worst battery life ever and the specs aren't very good either. Asus on the other hand is one of the best laptops around; build quality, performance and all.
With a budget like that, why not go for a MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

I have a desktop. I want it mainly for the basics but when it needs to, replace my desktop. I would like at least a 15in screen full HD.
Asus would be the brand im looking for. Mac book is a no no because it can't be upgraded
Also 5hrs of battery life would be ideal
Does any body know the battery life is, on the asus n76v2 ds71.

One major aspect to think about with any laptop is build quality. laptops tend to get moved about quite a bit and can take a beating, i neglected this when getting a laptop a few years back resulting in my now having a perfectly good laptop that has no screen as it was badly built. Macs are good for this being a single piece of metal but the lack of upgradeability is a definite drawback. Try to get a look at whatever your going to get in a shop before buying.
DO NOT BUY HP LAPTOP.bad usee expirience..my advice

Don't forget to compare whatever is out there at its level / price... I went for an MSI instead of an alienware both were specd equally but the alienware had a 1k bump in price over the msi ..... I know It was a gamble but now I see a lot complaining about the alienware and I'm pretty happy with my MSI
Spec around 1.5gb vid card 16gb ram a fast proc and ssd hard drives and amazingly great/clear/loud speakers... this sound from a laptop is almost impossible

My MacBook finally met it's tragic end, so it's time to get myself a new laptop. I likely won't be getting another Mac, as a lot of the software I'm using in my classes has me run Windows 7 anyways, not to mention I'd like to not spend $1500. Ideally:
* Build quality. My biggest factor. If the build quality sucks, than I will not buy it.
* Build. Another big factor. I'd like it to have similar height dimensions to my MacBook, so around 1.02 inches tall.
* Good screen, good resolution. Another fairly big factor. It doesn't have to have the BEST screen, but a decent resolution would be great.
* Snappy processor. Speaks for itself.
* Price: $800 is my upper limit.
Thanks guys
Congrats for leaving the forbidden fruit and coming to the7 windows
I have 4 laptops from HP ranging in size from 14-17 inches. All dv series. All have been very good performers and the most I paid for one was 750.00 for the 17in screen.
Intel dualcore processors, 4gb ram, 500gb hard drive, blue ray player.
Hp laptops are garbage , made of the cheapest plastic to be found , and the cool factor is also in the negatives , op needs a Sony and he knows it well , decide whats series ud like and buy it from ebay for better price

toshiba sucks! build quality is terrible!
On my experience all the contrary, only good experiences with Tosh so I´m loyal to that brand
I have had HP, Dell, Toshiba. HP flat out sucked. It just seemed like an all around horrible buy. Dell is great for work computers and that is it. (IMO)
I currently have a couple different Toshiba's. (Laptops & netbooks) My very first expierence with a Toshiba laptop was when I went overseas for the first time. I bought what at the time was a middle to upper end in store laptop. That laptop made it through extreme heat, sand, etc. It took a flat out beating and still to this day works great. Granted its some years old so it's no longer on the top end but for what it is, and how it still works- WOW.
My personal opinion would be Toshiba but this is because of my expierence. Everyone will have something different to say and I'm sure there is probably different arguements where it comes to the actual hardware.
Good luck!

Decent platform there!
Quad core Phenom II 1.6ghz per core(don't let the clocked rate fool you though, it's pretty speedy for a mobile platform)
4gb of ddr3 1066
ATI Radeon HD 5730 1gb ddr3
500gb sataII(Not sure if it's 5400 rpm, or 7200 rpm)
6-cell lithium Ion battery.
1366x728 resolution, not the highest but it's decent.
That's the one I would go for, but there are others.

I found 2 laptops that im interested in: Samsung series 7 chronos and ASUS N55SF I liked the Samsung cause it was portable and powerful and same for the ASUS.
I don't see whats wrong with dell, Im using a dell that I've had for almost 4 years even though at one point it broke but it wasn't my fault. Dells in my opinion seem like they can take a beating and keep on running my processor gets average ratings in the windows score index and overall there weren't any major problems that I've had with Dell
Any Samgsung series 7 or 9 are REALLY nice. i'd definietly recommend em.
Without any doubt Dells are good. But due to their Brand name, the offer price is high and when compared to Samsung, not only the price is less, but also you'll get major increment in the hardware specs.
An example should be a Dell Inspiron comes with :-
Intel core i3 2nd gen/3GB RAM/320GB HDD/14" screen/1.3MP cam/No OS/Glossy screen
whereas a Samsung (no idea about model) comes with :-
Intel core i3 2nd gen/4GB RAM/750GB HDD/15" screen(with numpad keys)/1.3MP cam/No OS/Matt-finish non reflective screen
And the price is, Samsung still is under for some penny's than Dell Inspiron.
Not sure whether its true, but heard Samsung provides "their own" produced hardwares to their Laptops except processor. But in case of Dell/HP/Vaio the HDD should be Seagate/Samsung or RAM should be of Transcend's.
Just don't buy any Toshiba...

Don't skimp on RAM. 8 gigs is my minimum, 16 is better. Windows 7 (and 8) will run a lot better with more RAM.

I'm actually going to be throwing a SSD into my laptop. Even without it though it is really quick. Plus it has dual video cards. The standard Intel card runs when you are doing simple stuff like browsing the web to save power. Once you start something that is graphics intensive the Nvidia GT 630M kicks in.
I play Diablo 3 on max settings on this thing just fine.
Hp envy spectare is something that you would like.. i am an architect so i use AutoCAD all the time.. this thing handles it well.. I've seen my collegues useing it..
But my personal suggesstion don't go for much small screen if you use CAD..
Buy a msi GE60-0ND-042US.. I use it personally and I'm happy with it in all aspects..
I went to best buy today to look around and I really like the series 9 and the new zenbook. I'm really into the idea of an ultrabook

I had an Acer A100 for a while and although it was super-versatile, it had some serious issues. The biggest was the terrible battery life (4 hours). It helped that the 12v charger would recharge the tablet in about an hour, but it still was a pain to deal with. Also, to cut corners, Acer opted for a cheap display which had poor viewing angles, especially on one side. Finally, the A100 was plagued with very poor touch response. A couple developers added some tweaks to improve it, but it was still a major problem for most users.
I'm sure Acer learned a few lessons with the A100, but early reports on the A110 indicate that they are going with the same cheap LCD they used previously. We'll see...
If it had a rear-facing camera... only then might it be somewhat considered as a Nexus 7 replacement.

Funny thing is I dont really agree with you. Me and three of my friends have Asus laptops that are still going strong beyond the fact I had to get a new battery a while back. Also I have bought Asus components for years for my PC. My motherboard and video card are both Asus. My experience with their RMA process has been great, my motherboard had issues and they sent it back to me within a week. Asus is huge as all hell so I don't think you are always going to have a consistent experience with them but me and my buddies still rock them because we all have.

Now seriously, I cannot see her using any program exept for the microsoft office, watching movies and general browsing.
She prefers the laptop to be thin, light and "beautiful" than powerful and ulgy.
I think that the zenbook suits her good. Also she'd prefer not to spend more money on a laptop.
Also, should I be afraid that if I buy a refurbished Mac it can have physical scratches and damages?
