best way to use triangle away - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys,
as of now which is the best working scenario to use Triangle Away (1.51 0r 1.70 ) from ?
4.0.3/ 4.0.4, stock-rooted or custom rom and which ics kernel ?
ps- the app throws up so many warnings it scares the hell out of me !
thanks
oops sorry (should be in question/answer forum )

Latest is working with stock ICS
Install application - open it - it will ask to download some progrramme (flasher) - let it download - select to reset counter - it will reboot in special recovery and finish job.
PS : I recommend this tool shud be use as last resort, anything flash with PC odin(when other option available) is not a good habit. i have seen many time user brick device and didn't get chance to use TA, TA works only if your device is live.

thank you doctor ketan,
everyday the scene at the forum (or our understanding) of it changes.....
In the alliance rom thread they said no matter how high your counter is you have triangle away to reset on ics.
Pc odin is the safest way to flash.
people started doubting mobile odin !
its only now that again experts are saying the ics safe kernels are really safe
sorry for my confusion

Obviously Triangle away can reset any number of counter, but just i have shown you condition. If some procedure brick your device when your counter is already raised, then it really creates problem to you, as TA works only device is live.
Thats Y i said you should select alternate way(if any) which doesn't raise counter.
- PC odin is safest way to flash and this is for stock stuffs.
-Mobile odin also proven safe tool, but each tools having its own pron & cons, but i have not seen any case which shows mobile odin is unsafe.
-I dont understan this 'its only now that again experts are saying the ics safe kernels are really safe' - indeed experts since begining saying safe kernel are safer.

yes, doc, again thanks.
i picked up from criskelos thread and other posts we can safely use speedmod and notecore for flashing roms.....that we dont have to go back to gingerbread all the time or use abyss recovery...

Can I install a Custom Kernel on an unrooted Note?

Hi guys,
I wonder if this is possible.. and forgive me if this has been asked before... but
can I install a custom kernel on my Note?
The Kernel version is DXLC2 and its not yet rooted.. Can I install, say Franco's kernel, or SpeedMod thru Recovery Mode ? (copying the zip kernel in the internal SD of my phone)
Would that be possible w/o root?
TIA
No. You should be rooted..................
Maybe you can try first and let us know the result. Like myth-buster, you know..
No, you cannot..
Not "you should be rooted", or "try it". You must be rooted. period.
In the first instance i suggest you spend some time reading threads about Android and rooting and flashing.
ok thanks.. much appreciated
No u cannot.....
Xperian using xda app
Well.. that answers it.. I appreciate all your answers guys... I thought I could just leave my warranty intact while flashing on a custom kernel.. but I guess, that's not the case then.. I really need to root my Note and then flash custom kernel away...
Guess you can't have the best of both worlds...
anyway.. again..thanks to all.....
I would say you can do that. I tried it before with my unrooted LA1. The problem is with unrooted phone you can't flash custom kernel with CWM or Mobile Odin because these require root. The only option you have is PC Odin. It WILL work, but it will invoke yellow triangle and increase custom binary counter.
You have to be rooted. Period !!
Also :-
Read the Stickies in the Development section and follow the methods there to the dot and you can save yourself from the yellow triangle and increasing the binary counter. And later anytime can restore it back to stock just in case the situation arises of sending you phone to samsung !!
Cheers!
Hit thanks if it helped!

[Q] new note user....a little help...

To anyone that can point me in the right direction....
Just got my note this morning - itching to get it rooted...ive had a fair few phones in the past (just coming from a sensation) which i rooted and reflashed nearly every week. used to have a galaxy tab which i also rooted etc etc so im ok with odin, adb etc etc.....the only problem i have is where to start - theres a million roms to choose from and im not sure where to go
my kernel is 2.6.35.7-N7000XXLA6-CL907341
baseband is N7000XXLA4
Can anyone point me in the right direction for the tools that i need access to...
thanks to anyone that can help
Comfy
I can see that mine isnt directly rootable and know that ive got to go to an older rom but which one??
You can have any older ROM, listed here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
select any from directly rootable ROM, I am suggesting this one
N7000XXKL3 ------ 2.3.6 2011 December-------- N7000ODDKL1 --------------------India
as this is non wipe N rootable, you won't lose data.
Alternately, select from 4th line of my signature, which is modified pre rooted ROM
Well, first and foremost thanks for replying so fast! it'd be nice to get this flashed as soon as possible -ive got no data to keep as its new to me so ive got yours downloading now (take about another hour from what i can see) - so, once ive got your rom is it just a case of using oding to upload it (its a while since ive had a tab) so im a bit rusty.....+ i take it the next step is CWM?? is that right??
sorry - all the questions - obviously im downloading your interim rom to get it rooted - whats the best ics rom at the moment....?

There is no best rom as they all differ. I'd suggest Imilka's AOSP rom ( if you like AOSP that is ). It's fast, clean and stable.

yes, just use PC odin to flash ROM, if you have any query, refer to post #2 of thread, i have mention in previous msg.
yeah, next is to get CWM
And, finally you can update to latest ROM by using CWM to keep root intact.

Sorry, I can't help in this matter much, as I have never used any custom ROM.
??????????
What is "not directly rootable"? You can flash CF/Speedmod/Franco/Abyss kernel over any stock rom to get root. You are anyways asking to downgrade ROM using PC ODIN which is going to increase the counter. Why not flash only one of these kernels using PC ODIN?
From the Moderator,
Please clarify your statement. It is not entirely accurate. The Phone needs to be unlocked 1st before any rooting can occur. Secondly, Not All kernels will provide rooting, UNLESS they are written and configured to do so.
People's knowledge level in XDA are from total noob to expert, so it is highly advisable to provide more succinct complete postings e.g. do A then B then etc. That way, people do not misunderstand your posting.

Since how long you are on N7000 forum? looking you are since long on XDA (just seen U R developer)
May i have not uttered more thn three four words, if it was stated by newbie.
When you are 'recognized developer' it puts lot weight on every word you spoke. Hope you can consider to review again your advise.
Can you confirm once again to your statement?
Flash stock ROM using PC odin raise counter?
Flashing CF/Franco/Abyss with PC odin, won't raise counter?
I do believe, your statement is completely wrong. PC odin never raise counter, if you flash STOCK ROM. But any custom Kernel you have described, if flashed with PC Odin will certainly raise counter. Though you are recognized developer, but seems you are new to N7000 develpment.
I havent gone anywhere - still havent got your rooted file - im about 70% of the way there - this has got to be the slowest download ever!!
At last - ive got your rooted file - just extracted it and theres just one file in there - i thought with odin you had individual files....how do i load this one on....

You're 100% wrong. PC Odin won't raise the binary counter as long as it's a stock ROM. The OP needs to flash an older stock ROM so he can root and then do whatever he wants to do. The binary counter will get raised if he flashes a custom ROM with PC Odin.
PC Odin: Stock ROM's
Mobile Odin and CWM: Stock and custom ROM's
ok - i got there in the end - Firstly i like to thank Dr.Ketan for pointing me in the right direction.....i have a few post-type questions.....
i flashed the rom you suggested (the one that was already rooted) - while it went on ok - while it was in that state i lost the ability to use the keyboard - when i type anything in the key would flash up but the it came up with "null" everytime i hit a key...not too much of a problem as it was only a temporary rom.
Also when i flashed the ics rom you suggested - imilka - it flashed.....then at the boot screen it kept freezing (at the boot animation) - i popped the battery a few times and then it eventually started.....and its been fine since....anyone else ever had that/is that the norm...?
Finally - obviously ive removed the stock rom and im now on ics....is there a way i can download all of the stylus apps and put them back in (one of the reasons i bought a note was to use the stylus - bit gimmicky but it would be nice to mess around with it)
Also - i had to install clockwork mod from the market (i have a paid app version of it) - to actually get into clockwork mod....how to i get to cwm from a cold boot - i read that you had to hold down the vol up and down and hit the power - mine just boots - unless im doing something wrong but, when its fully booted i can go to cwm and restart from there and i can go in.....
Sorry about all the questions but, its a great phone, just want to start messing around with it...new toy!
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
Comfy
Keyboard null issue is common, that usually manage by flashing other rom or with flashing csc, but you have manage it so nothing to discuss.
booting error is routinely termed as bootloop, also common, particularly switching between gb n ics rom. Usually it solved with wipe cache n wipe data.
Sorry abt stylus appl, i have no expirence of ics, as i never installed any custom rom.(n it was not me suggested ics b'coz m noob for custom rom)
Market version of cwm is totally different n won't work on note.
there is custom kernel for note, which having same functiin like cwm.

[Q] question about updating to ics

hi all, it s my first thread
i have a new samsung galaxy note never rooted, never updated, on gingerbread 2.3.5.
I want to know if i must root my device before doing this to update to ICS .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
If you want stock ICS you can just flash the required files using ODIN, If you want a custom ICS ROM then you will either have to flash a safe kernel and cwm (some kernels have cwm built in) then update that way, You may also have to flash ICS through ODIN, then a kernel, then a rom. read the requirements in the OP
If you let me know which ROM you want i can try help you through the process.

ThereĀ“s no need to root your phone in order to update, but if you flash it thru PC Odin you will get the yellow triangle and will raise the binary counter. Besides, with the hardbrick bug around maybe is not the best idea to update now. You should hold on a bit until Samsung releases the fix for the bug....
thanks
i want to install stock ics rom, so i do like in the guide without rooting my note on gingerbread (before updating) ?
I upgraded to stock ICS by just flashing it via ODIN, Dont worry about the binary count or yellow triangle if you get it, It can be removed. I have it but wont remove it till i need to send it back.
But as glevitan said, Its best to stay on GB if you feel anxious about upgrading, There isnt a huge difference between the 2 anyway.
If you dont care and you are a dare devil who laughs in the face of danger, Just be sure to read read read all the guides.
If in doubt..............ASK !

Is there a method to root Galaxy Note through Mobile??

Hello,
Just wanted to know, if there is any method of rooting the Note thru the device? If there is no way of rooting thru the device, which is the Simplest Method (There are many post and its so confusing, please direct me to the easiest rooting Method), also without downgrading, if any (without the risk)
Also i have updated to the latest 4.0.4 DDLR6 and still i see the emcc chip is at risk (thru Got Brick bug app from chainfire).
Sry for so many questions on a Single thread (New to Android, so doesnt want to take any chances)

u can root via cwm and su files using your phone
infact dis was d most easy and widely followed method till few days back
buy it has been discovered to be risky lately
u may find an old thread and use dat method
but some bricking risk rrmains..v remote chances..
best safest way today is what u already know..downgrade to prerooted gb..then mobile odin pro..everroot..flash ics..
A shorter and currently recommended way to root:
1. Flash safe kernel with root (ex: speedmod, notecore) through PC Odin.
2. Use triangle away app to reset binary counter.
I'm also on 4.0.4 stock and will probably use this shorter method.

Hi, I use CWM (blue touch UI) & SU files (both install & uninstall) to root my Note Stock ICS 4.0.4 ROM. So far everything runs smooth, even I format few times & re-do.
BTW, saw your thread here stating this method still has risk of being "bricked"
Is this still not recommended safe way? Where can I get OP thread to view the description in details on this issue? Thanks.

Sri, I guess u r anxious after reading several threads. Since you mentioned you are already on 4.0.4 DDLR6 and considering that if your objective is to just to ROOT (safely), follow what @gtranvi has rightly suggested. That will be a two step process.
1. Flash safe kernel with root (ex: speedmod, notecore) through PC Odin. (click here to download Speedmod. Thanks to hardcore for his post on this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1673072&highlight=download+speedmod )
2. Use triangle away app to reset binary counter. Thanks to Chainfire, who has done a tremendous job on this (click here to download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22463153#post22463153) Remembe rthat you have to download JUST the "TriangleAway-v1.70.apk"
And let me assure you... no need to panic, if you adhere to all the instructions properly!!!
Good luck...
You guys dont think we should stop mentioning that old method??
that method is proved unsafe, and no meaning to discuss more, as many newbies will find it from other site by reading here.
And read 'symbian6600' showing his achievement...
So we stopping discussion here.
OP can find rooting guide here

i moved from ios.....but....

Hello forum
last night i got a galaxy note and finally made my move from ios. I could not resist the gorgeous display. I had been using ios since early days with jbreak ofc.
Now my friend installed a custom rom for me Criskelo on ICS 4.0.4 or smthg like that. I freaking hate it its laggy and buggy and i dont know why battery drains like crazy.
I really want to rwmove this os and hard reset and go back to the "out of the box" ICS 4.0.4. Please if uou know of any step by step guide kindly lik it here. I am starting to hate android and mias the stability of my ios so much but i really hope its because this rom is buggy and would like to give android another chance. Thanks a lot team..

Thanks i went through this but didnt understand everything i am completely new ro android so all these terms i am not familiar with.
Download Samsung kies and install it to get drivers
Download Odin(you can find it all around the forum)
Download latest stock ics(android 4.0.4) from www.sammobile.com extract it (its zipped) (firmware section search for n7000)
Put your phone in Odin mode volume down+power+home buttons all together
Once you get the warning press volume up to enter odin mode
Make sure kies its closed and connect your phone to the pc and wait until all the drivers gets installed
After that open odin and do not change any check box
Make sure a yellow block turns on in the top left corner of odin indicating it recognizes your phone
Press PDA and put there the file you downloaded (and extracted) from sammobile.com
Press start and that's it.. Wait until it finishes and you will have a full stock phone
Edit: Hey make sure that you have at least 50% battery before you go through this

The latest android now is ice cream sandwich(4.03&4.04). It has a bug, when you performed a factory reset, recovery data wipe, and nandroid( backup&restore ) it will corrupt your pit files and the result is they called superbrick, the only remedy is to replace your mobile board.
The only safe solution for it now is to flash safe custom kernel( the stock rom has a stock kernel inside) like speedmod k3-12, notecore v12, and goku to be safe from doing factory reset, recovery data wipe, and nandroid ( backup&restore ).

It might not sound right, and I understand you are new, but just like learning a new skill, rooting any Android device requires some amount of self-reading. People are helpful here but if you know the basics, you will be in a much better position to decide what's good for you and understand the instructions.
Android inherently treats all processes, including the touch interface, with the same priority. iOS treats the touch interface as a priority process, so Android might feel a tad laggy, but the benefits of using an Android device are way more than using iOS, which you can realize only after using the Note for around a month.
One of my friends switched to the Note from an iPhone, after using her iPhone since the first one, and she is enjoying the Note, as are many.
Criskelo's ROM is actually one of the fastest and most stable on this ROM, so it seems you have some unusual issue that's ruining your experience. Always try watching a video on YouTube of the ROM you are considering to flash, so you know how it looks and feels before flashing.
Welcome to Android!

THanks for the info , yes I was told that Criskelo is the fastest and most stable but I dont know why for some reason it feels very laggy and drains battery like crazy. So I thought that maybe going back to stock ICS would solve the issue.
Lets say I want to keep Criskelo ... can I just go to Back up and Reset and Factory resset the phone ? is it safe? i dont care about the data and apps , ill have everything backed up and i can download again manually. but that might solve my lagging issues?

It's safe from safe kernels lol.. Why don't you flash notecore, then factory reset?.. Notecore its a hell fast kernel and with over clocked version I'm getting 15/16 hours with 4/5 hours screen time.. And yeah notecore its a safe kernel
If you want a nice experience with your note I really encourage you to buy for a couple of bucks mobile odin.. Will make your life hell easier and safer
With mobile odin pro you can change custom kernels like changing your underwear without risking your phone and allowing you to try custom kernels with no yellow triangle.. Notecore and speedmod are the main kernels for tw roms
You can flash notecore and speedmod from cwm too though but for that you need custom recovery and a safe kernel wich criskelo already provided to your phone..
You gotta read a lot hehe

I looked everywhere, tried reinstalling a zillion time, it wont do
Once you learn the basics you are good to go.. Erm yes you have notecore.. Download the latest release from his thread its v12 and yeah you are safe to perform a factory reset on your phone
Forget about kies on cuustom roms.. You only need it for drivers but nothing else... Heck not even being stock you need kies.. And if you want kies to detect your phone you gotta go settings/development /enable usb debugging
Edit: you need enable debugging
