Help me root my devices - HTC Incredible S

Dear All,
I have decided to root my HTC IS after updated to ICS
Here is my ph information
Code:
*** LOCKED ***
VIVO PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.0.2.0002
RADIO-3831.18.00.11_M
eMMC-boot
May 22 2012, 14:22:08
Which one is more suitable for me ?
"[HOWTO] Downgrade Hboot 2.02.0002 S-ON to get BLACKROSE S-OFF"
or
"[29/7/12] Updated All in One Noob Guide For Downgrade and S Off"
Is there any hardware i need extra?
i have PC, PH, USB Cable and BuildIt SD
I have read a lot of forums asking about root but each one is a little bit difference with my ph info.
Just show me if there are other thread i can follow to root
Sorry for bothering

So are you saying that if you unlock your phone it will boot? Or it just does not boot at all after flashing the boot.img?

Then leave it unlocked, boot it and then you can run the downgrade tool. It will relock the bootloader at the end of the script.

does it boot back into bootloader? if yes that could be due to CID. did you change it?
I faced the same problem with my evo3D when I lock the bootloader it automatically boot into recovery. Later I found that was a CID problem.

Thanks for your help.
I didn't change anything
i followed everything from the instruction
I think i got a problem now. What is "Enter FASTBOOT USB mode"
I open the phone by VolDown+Pwr and choose "Fastboot" at screen
then i run "fastboot flash boot boot.img" from computer and it went successful
But can't relock(if i do, it doesn't boot at all).
may be i didn't enter "FASTBOOT USB"
How to enter into this mode?
If that is not the problem, which thread should i use for downgrade ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373697 is OK?

Yes use that thread (both s-off threads use my downgrade script anyway)
tpbklake told you earlier to not lock your bootloader, so unlock it again and run my script. Please read all of the instructions first.

All those errors means that it has failed. At this point I would suggest restarting your pc, putting the phone into fastboot mode and flashing this recovery.
http://download2.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-vivo.img using
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-vivo.img
Once completed successfully download superuser and place on sdcard http://downloads.noshufou.netdna-cdn.com/superuser/Superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip. Boot into your recovery and choose install zip from sdcard, navigate to the superuser zip file you placed there and install it.
If all those steps completed successfully you are now rooted. It is your choice what you decide to do from here.

Try the new version of the toolkit, also you shouldn't be getting all those "daemon still not running" errors, what drivers do you have installed and is your phone in charge mode?

[Q] Phone will only succesfully flash certain roms

Hey guys!
I have a problem, and to be perfectly honest I am not a massive expert at this sort of stuff, but bare with me.
I am trying to install Virtuous ICS Rom RC2 on my Incredible S, but once I've done so it won't boot past the HTC logo. Tried a clean wipe (factory reset/cache/dalvik cache), and even changing from EXT3 to EXT4 and back, but nothing works. Now, I've had this problem before with other various ROMs, and it seems that I can only get flawless installs and boots from Cyanogenmod 7.1 and MIUI (not the ICS version).
Currently running 4EXT recovery and MIUI, but I want the ICS rom really bad, and other Incredible S users are flashing without any problems, so I'm not sure what gives.
Any and all help would be appreciated (and sorry if this is a noob-ish question and/or in the wrong forum)!
Make sure you have the newest ClockWork Recovery Mod installed. If you do try reinstalling it and an engineering hBoot. I would say the problem would be that one of those are corrupt.
I will try both of those and get back to you with the results! Thanks!
Okay, so I updated CWM to 5.0.2.0, which did not do anything. When you say reinstall, do you mean a completely removal of CWM and then installing it again? Because I'm not sure how to do that.
Also, as usual, MIUI 1.2.30 installs just fine, but I just tried installing MIUI 2.12.13 and ended up in a bootloop. So, thus far, I can only flash two roms; CM7.1 and MIUI 1.2.30. These two were the first two roms I ever flashed, not sure if that has anything to do with anything but I thought it might be worth mentioning.
Unlocked bootloader with htcdev? You might need to reflash the boot.img from your desired rom's zip file with the command
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
i think you should flash the new ROM image
please refer the the post

How do I flash a ROM via HBOOT? Do I just load it up, wait for the SD card to be read then plug it in via usb, go to cmd and type in the necessary prompts, and the boot.img file from my rom.zip will be flashed?

Read the FAQ sticky post for info on how to flash the boot.img file in a custom ROM.zip file.
Will do, thanks guys, wish me luck.
The correct first question is: Is the OP S-Off or HTC unlocked? if it's the latter, follow Nonverbose's advice.
My phone is S-OFF.

Fastboot getvar all
And post the results so we can see how your phone is currently set up
Okay, so I highlighted FASTBOOT and pressed the power button, then plugged in the USB and it changed to FASTBOOT USB. However, my PC doesn't find my phone, so I can't run the cmd prompts. Should I just go through the steps listed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337105?

No that would not be applicable in your case from what you have told us. If you are S-Off and have a custom ROM installed, then you probably don't have HBOOT 1.16 or 2.00. That is why I wanted you to get the Fastboot getvar all information.
Have you installed HTC Sync on your PC to get the appropriate drivers set up?
Just installed HTC Sync and got all the appropriate drivers. Still won't show up as a disk when I'm in Fastboot, but I'm guessing it's not supposed to either.

No it won't show as a disk drive. Open a command window and set the working directory to the one where you installed adb.exe and Fastboot.exe and then type:
Fastboot devices and it should respond with your device serial number. If it does then you can type:
Fastboot getvar all

Ok you still have S-Off and now that you have fastboot working I would try reflashing CWM 5.0.2.0 recovery image in fastboot mode.
Copy the CWM recovery.img file to the directory where you have fastboot.exe. If you have a zip file for CWM5.0.2.0 then open the zip and copy the .img file.
Then in fastboot mode type the command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then I would try flashing Virtuous ICS.
Hm, sadly that didn't help, it still just bootloops and/or get stuck on the bootscreen (depending on the ROM, tried both the Virtuous ROM and the new MIUI).

Going thru the custom rom install, I wiped everything even my recovery backups. All i can do now is boot into HBoot, Fastboot, or TWRP recovery. How can I get pass this problem? Is there a way I can get S-Off in fastboot mode only? Please I need access to my phone

Since you have a custom recovery, extract boot.img from the zip, flash via fastboot : fastboot flash boot boot.img
run twrp, and install rom via sideload, like the previous guy said you don't need S-Off, with S-On you can't flash boot.img via twrp so it'll have to be done via bootloader

Unistall htc sync and htc drivers and install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261088 these drivers, then use adb command 'adb devices' and hopefully it shows up, to sideload, it's a simple adb command. have the rom.zip in the adb folder. then use 'adb sideload rom.zip' then wait until 100% and it'll automatically run the script on twrp
You need to be in recovery to do adb devices.
You need to have the phone connected in Fastboot USB mode to do fastboot device.
These are NOT interchangeable.

Needs a bit more explaining I think.
I don't know why, but at first, fastboot didn't work for me.
I tried many things found on the internet, many guides, many drivers but every time, while my device was on, my computer could detect it and interact with it using cmd and "adb" commands, but every time I rebooted to bootloader, and selected "fastboot", nothing worked. The drivers wouldn't install correctly and even "fastboot devices" wouldn't work. My phone was on Hboot 1.54, and my computer was on a Windows 8.1 x64
I then installed Windows 7 on my laptop and had no problems installing the drivers and flashing the firmware.zip using fastboot.
Today I wanted to try again to make fastboot work with my butterfly (hboot 1.57 now) on my windows 8.1 PC, and...it worked ! I'm no expert, but I guess Hboot 1.54 wasn't "compatible" with win 8.1, whereas hboot 1.57 has no problems.
Just wanted to share this here, in case it can help someone else in the same situation.

StockBoot.img(Lollipop)- Because if you messed up you need to flash this and then have to download stock lollipop firmware and then sideload firmware from stockrecovery to get you phone working
Yeah, I updated yesterday my ZE551KL to Android M and as I didn't like it (some minimal changes) I chose to install the CM13.
But the unlocker didn't work. Ocurred the problem described in this post.
I will try this method later and post my result.
Update: the root worked!
Question: can I flash the CM rom without backing up the system? Because I got no space available for it in my microSD. What are the risks?
LOL

Method works. Apologies to OP

I'm pretty new at this. Doesn't flashing require an unlocked bootloader? Most of what I read seems to indicate so, but maybe not on some devices? Can someone clarify?

Flashing any non-stock .img or zip requires unlocked bootloader. This guide will never work. It seems this guy made two accounts, one for writing the guide and one for posting that it worked. The OP is just trying to fool people, or may be he himself got fooled by somebody and he posted that guide here. Mods, This thread should be deleted.
Edit : Sorry for updating too late. This method works on locked bootloader. The img files are provided by a genius shakalaka. They are patched to match Asus signed img files. Thanks for writing this useful thread
Also confirmed working on ZE-551KL on my phone and my wife's phone!
Thank You!
Please most definitely follow this step: 4- When it said "finished" and there is no error. Then type this and press volume - (down) before screen lit up.
Code:
fastboot reboot
Definitely do the "Press volume down button" right after you hit (Enter)
This was sticking point because I didn't read carefully....
Hi, just try your method it work. My is ZE550KL 6.0.1
Aloso work on build : 21.40.1220.1708 too.

Hello sir can u make avideo iam urgent for root please
No idea how this works
I have no idea how, but it worked! I (mostly) agree with sziraqui that flashing a recovery image with the device locked shouldn't work: I tried it before and the device would not load the bootloader after flashing, forcing me to re-flash the stock bootloader.
As mentioned by the OP, after flashing the marshmallow firmware (UL-Z00L-WW-21.40.1220.1708-user.zip) the unlock app crashed when unlocking. After that, I tried to flash TWRP and to my surprise it DID work! I also managed to flash supersu and test it with TitaniumBackup.
Since I would be skeptic myself, I'm attaching a picture that show's twrp and my terminal showing the that the bootloader reports as being locked.
I'm using marshmallow on my ZenFone 2 laser user_21.40.1220.1877 the latest stock firmware I'm not able to unlock it when I enter this command "fastboot boot ze550kltwrp.img in command prompt keeping my device into fastboot mode it shows error "you need to unlock your device to use this command"

[GUIDE] How to Get Root Acces with Magisk Manager

NOW WE GOT THE ROOT!
First, I was been able to get the bootloader unlocked by standard unlocking method. Head to this Thread [url]https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-4-max/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-zc554kl-t3677270[/URL]
And now, We are able to get root via Magisk Manager that will not mess with our Asus Stock ROM in benefit systemless root from Magisk. Thanks for @topjohnwu !!
You can get more information about Magisk in this thread:
[url]https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445[/URL]
And now, there are few steps for how to get systemless root on our device.
1. You need to extract the boot.img of you current ROM which can be obtained in the flashable ZIP made by Asus
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2. After getting the boot.img of your current ROM, download Magisk Manager and then select install in the app. Select the Patch boot image file, and search the boot.img from the Step 1.
Wait until you get automatic process running and get you a patched_boot.img within the directory cantaining that.
3. The last, Just copy to your computer and flash out the patched_boot.img to your device with fastboot command, restart then you'll get the magisk manager work.
type this command on fastboot interface
fastboot flash boot *.img
Note:
*=Name and location of your patched_boot.img

That's all that you must do for gaining root access. I don't know and I don't care to what happened with your device or what is that you blame about. Just take the risk alone!

Nice job! Say, will this work on the Zenfone 4 Max Pro? Specifically, model ASUS_X00ID. It's a different model than the Zenfone 4 Max, but they share the same ZC554KL code (whatever that is.)

You can try unlocking the bootloader first. Then try this patching method. The msm8917 and msm8937 just a same structured chispset. Asus had the two config at the source code at once. Go and try. And report here too.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Can't get the bootloader to unlock. I go as far as fastboot oem get_unlock_key , which gives me an "OKAY" but when I enter "fastboot oem unlock-go" if gives me a "FAILED (remote:unknown command)
I am sure I installed ADB and Fastboot correctly. At least I hope I did. I'd be happy to know that I didn't install fastboot correctly.

I lied. Apparently IT WORKS.
I just did this in particular:
Typed: fastboot reboot bootloader (I did not do this at first, I went to bootloader manually)
Typed: fastboot oem get_unlock_key (got the okay)
Typed fastboot oem unlock (Got a "Device already : Unlocked!")
Rebooted to be sure. DEVICE STATE is UNLOCKED
Got a pic for proof
Edit: Pics don't upload properly. URL -https://pasteboard.co/GM8QVeF.jpg
Also I can't see the images on your guide.

Do you have boot.img from UL-ASUS_X00ID-WW-14.2016.1708.156-user.zip file? I've downloaded several times but ended up the zip file is corrupt.

You can bootup with older version boot.img. earlier 153 version booted up. You can use that by using "fastboot boot boot.img" without flashing to emmc. Then after booting the 153 boot.img, you can patch the 156 version that placed on mmcbkl0p24

I didn't recommend the 156 zip stock because that messed up by asus it self. I use the 153 zip file
hmm, I used the 156 zip stock in particular. Is there anything I should be concerned about? Everything seems okay so far.

Don't ever try to flash that zip to your phone. I'm wandering why the latest version just 1,32 Gb when the earlier version is 1,69 Gb. Maybe corrupted or some thing. The boot.img must be okay for flash, but other than that of course not. The boot.img is on the header of the zip so it's safe and doesn't corrupted.

At now still no. Android nowadays using verity that verifying the /system partitions that makes our device hangs or brick if there is a modification. That's means to us to using twrp to install magisk that can handle modification systemlessly. So the device won't brick. SuperSu itself using systemless injection.
