Did a fresh install (wiped everything/cache) and using 220sys, 8cache (the one for Evervolv JB, so no change needed if upgradting to JB later) partitions. 1GB a2sd ext. Using smartassv2 governor.
It's laggy ---- press an icon/menu and I can feel significant lag before the app opens, and the time it take to start an app (e.g. facebook, skype, google voice) is MUCH more than CM7.2
Are these things I should try to alleviate this?
Other than the speed problem, it seems to work fine, but it's too slow as a daily driver...
Thanks,

Use Nova launcher and in Developer options turn off all animation. You will see a difference.

I did turn off the animation. However, the lag happens when starting app, going around within app. It feels not just animation related.
Trying BCM(now SpazeDog) now. It feels a bit better. (I did use the same min/max cpu/governor when comparing them)

Hi all,
With CM7 i'm enjoying my Milestone like never before. But since it's my first custom ROM, i have some questions though.
1. When returning to the home screen, 9 out of 10 times it reloads and rebuilds completely. How can i avoid this?
2. If it's a memory issue and i want to keep it in memory, how can i accomplish this without the risk of losing other essential apps from memory, like SMS and phone?
3. I read something about priorities for apps, how does this work?
4. Sometimes my device reboots randomly. My CPU is set to 900. Can this be the cause? If so, what's the best CPU speed setting?
So far for now, but i guess i'll be back with some more ;-)
Thanks in advance,
Gerard

I'm no expert so someone please correct me if i'm wrong and sorry for all spelling errors.
What version of CM7 are you running? If u'r running RC3 0.08-11.03.16 that homescreen Redraw (problem number 1) should be minor, something like 1 out of 10 times, atleast on my milestone. There is "Keep home in memory" setting in Cyanogenmod settings -> Performance, make sure it's enabled and for the problem number 2 enable "Keep SMS in memory". You shouldn't care much about app priorities cause CM7 memory management is taking care of that pretty well. Random reboot are DSI errors, they are minor in the newest CM7 version but there is no failsafe way to avoid them, if you don't want to chance the kernel, you can read about that in CM7 for milestone thread.
Thanks, i just can't find the "keep SMS in memory" option?
Then you probably won't have the newest version of CM7. You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941346 and flash it just like u flashed it at the first time. Just wipe cache and dalvik cache from open recovery and you will get to keep all your personal settings and files/apps.
That's the one i have and i already found it. But thanks again!

A few answers of my own:
1) The CPU speed is probably NOT the cause of your reboots, but if you want to be sure, try it for a week. 700 is safer, 550 is default.
2) If it is your CPU overclocking, you may be able to fix it by upping the voltage on your overclock. This will lead to a bit more heat and a bit more battery drain, but should fix the reboots if CPU related
3) I would look at the SUPERCHARGE your Milestone thread about memory management settings. Although Zepps's settings and scripts are meant for tweakers and are probably a tad aggressive if you don't know what you are doing, they did speed up my phone by 200%.
I would recommend installing AutoMemoryManager and using the mild settings if you want to do something less aggressive than the Supercharge scripts...
You will get some of the benefits of the supercharge and a very low risk of apps getting killed by the memory manager.
My 2 cents!
thanks caz.
I'm pretty sure the new minfree settings that I've been testing out are the best of both worlds... superfast and background friendly.
I hadnt had a chance to update the thread yet and post the new script.
But for those interested, this should really work great... 6, 8, 24, 26, 28, 30.
Thanks all, i'll look into those things. By reading that is, because i've got a lot to learn!
Hi all,
I'm still experimenting and impressed by this ROM. Just now I performed a fix permissions to prevent apps from fc. That modified the read & write permissions of all apps. I assumed it couldn't hurt to try, but now I'm wondering what it did exactly. There aren't any noticable changes. Can anyone fill me in?
Thanks,
Gerard

I'm not sure what you mean, but this is my first custom ROM coming from stock Eclair on my first Android device.
So I have no idea which is the best, but I do know that I'm very impressed by CM7. It runs perfectly on my Milestone, so I feel no need whatsoever to try another.
Yup, for sure

Can you tell me if the camera & video work well?
My 2 bigs problem with froyomod are the camera that often FC and freeze and the video that are stuttering so much..
I can move to CM7 only if I'm sure that this stuff work well!

I can only speak for myself, but I haven't had one single problem so far. Shooting pictures and videos works fluently on my device. I am also not aware of any possible known problems, but maybe others can confirm this.
ADW Launcher in CM7 RC4.1
Started new thread for a specific question, but i can't delete this post.
I am not sure but whenever I enter Google Play on (any nightly of) CM9, it is very laggy. When I scroll, you can clearly notice the lag. This also happens sometimes when I click on that menu icon on the home page to bring the whole apps list on my TP. I have overclocked it to 1.7GHZ but no diff.
Is my TP defected or is other people experiencing same or do I need to make some settings adjustments?
Thanks for your help

A few of the recent nightlies had UI performance issues. Are you on 5/9 or earlier, or 5/22 or newer? If not, try one of those.

Is it only in the Google Play store? If so, it might just be streaming data in. I'd recommend using a benchmark tool like Antutu or Quadrant to see if your Touchpad stacks up to others. Don't put too much weight on the numbers though. Performance on the Touchpads should improve as CM gets to closer to a stable release.
I have installed latest nightly.
STILL SAME ISSUE...lags when I scroll the app list. I also noticed lag when I select an app and scroll through the screenshots for that app posted by the dev (above user comments)...
I will try running benchmark and post results soon.
Ok so according to Antutu, this is what I get.
CPU: 2965
GPU: 1468
Ram 1419
I/O: 577
TotalScore: 6429
Is that normal? Good/Bad?
ThankU
Scrolling in google play has always been laggy for me but has gotten a little better.
So, I'm using DjangoManouche 1.5b5. Kernel is Gueste's 1.3.3(?) OC version. I chose 20s and I'm just wondering what is the difference between that and 20q(I live in FIN if it matters). I chose better multitasking, Pdroid and FD. What are Pdroid and FD?
In anyway, icQ, Tapatalk and Dolphin browser HD aren't staying up. It's a little annoying because I cannot get pop-up messages in icQ and the browser must reload pages every time. It happens when I'm using any other app for a few minutes and trying to use the previously used one.
The problem came back with DM ROM and I had some kind of lightly customized CM ROM. I just would like to fix that problem if it could be possible. Sorry for postig that problem on that sectio but I have no rights to post in development section yet.
Pdroid is privacy framework, FD is fast dormacy. It looks like youre low on ram. I would suggest to use latest cm kang with etana kernel with 48 ramhack.

no offense to anyone or any ROM, if it is the free RAM which is the cause, I would suggest that your stock ROM based choice is more than good...I am on DJ1.5B5 and I have a minimum of 140Mb always and have no issues....
so, investigate using different options mate....I can guarantee this ROM ....and its performance
I don't want to change to different rom. That rom has a lot pf options and there must be a way to make it work. I have Lg's launcher, which can take too much RAM. I should change that to Adw launcher. Well, do you have any recommendations what I should change?

I assume you have installed with an option to have a lot of free RAM. Whaddayouknow, to have a lot of free RAM the system will kill background apps.
Reinstall DM with stock OOM values, or if you know how, change them back to stock values.

Im using better multitasking. Could you give me a tip how to change values without reinstallation?
BTW, I have worse problem than that. I cannot set music volume any lower in Poweramp. I set it to zero and still I hear music too loud. The problem doesn't exist in Youtube(adding volume is still a little bad). What can I do because I dont want to destroy my ears?
Edit: I paussed the music player and now it's a lot better. I added some volume when the player was paussed and then it was better. Still I cant set volume as much as I want. Help, please.
Edit 2: Okay guys, I fixed that. I disabled direct volume contol and now it's normal.
I actually use my phone to do stuff... not only tinker endlessly with it. I have Skype, Whatsapp, FB, Twitter running on the device at all times.
Last time I checked, when I boot my phone I have 768 MB in use! So when I open Chrome, or Logmein, it takes.. .forever. Even opening the dialer takes a couple of seconds. The phone itself is smooth - opening apps is what chokes my phone.
I don't overclock my phone (on JB it's impossible, anyway). But I don't think it's a GHz issue. I think that if I had 2 GB of RAM everything would be fine.
Anyway.
Should I get off JellyBean for the time being and go back to ICS? Or, would CM10 be faster and lighter?
I can't believe that when I got my Note a couple of months ago I thought it was blazing fast, and now it seems turtle-like when comparing it to my wife's Optimus 4X
In Cm10 or 10.1, ram usage is low and apps open fast too.
There are several things you can do to speed it up and lower the RAM usage. Easiest method would be to flash a tweaked ROM like Ultimate or Alliance, which already come with various optimizations. But what I found best regarding RAM usage was to install ROM Toolbox Pro, and tweak the settings under Memory Management. I use the "Advanced" or "Aggressive" profile.
This is, of course, if you want to stick with Samsung ROMs. Otherwise you could try CM/AOKP-based ROMs, some are much more lightweight than Samsung. The best in my opinion are SlimBean and Jellybam.

You should try Cassies Xtra lite 11.1 LSA (there is slight difference between LSC so dev didn't make a ROM that's based on LSC)
Than flash LSC kernel if u want and use V6 superecharger from zepp and your antutu will be somewhere near 10000!!!
Thanks tu CF,Zepp,Thering1975,Adam Outler,Eybee1970 and Philz.
Try this Ram Optimizer Pro...has different profiles to choose from....

Also if you wanna OC to 1.6gHz here ya go..just install the apk then load the module then set your speed..

All the possibilities above are good alternatives to you, friend.
I use CM10.1 cause I'm always looking for good battery and smoothness.
As I'm too lazy to install and tweak those RAM optimizers, I always try custom ROMs.
Btw, Jelly Bam is trully great.
Greetings,
I have a problem with my S Advance. The UI is very slow, the apps working fine, I mean I can play Dead Trigger well, Temple Run 2 also run greats, but the UI is really slow.
I noticed it while I had to look for something on my old Galaxy Ace. And it was pretty weird that it feeled faster than the S Advance. So I compared them, and it was true, the whole UI in the Ace is a lot faster.
So, the best way to show the differences between the speed of UI, I recorded the stock Notes app opening on the both phone.
S Advance: (Sorry for horrible quality)

Galaxy Ace:

Note: the memory was cleaned on both phone so the apps weren't in memory.

For me, CoCore E 5.0 with some props tweak improve ui response significantly.
Here are some ground rules for you to consider.
Use custom launcher like Holo Launcher HD, or if you like stock, go for modded one here in our forum.
Use ui build.prop tweaks like debug.sf.hw, or something similar.
Use good cpu scheduler like pegasusQ or OndemandQ with zen or sio (zen and cfq proven to be stable for me as a multitasker)
Use themed systemui, this helps a little bit, depends on your configuration
Play with your kernel, CoCore have some useful tweaks like Touch Booster controls and etc.
Also try to see your wakelock usage. Greenify proven for me to be most helpful in this area. Good luck
After upgrading to Jellybean (XXLQ4), my S Advance has been faster than ever... hmm.. try this, it could help....
1. Go to Settings > Dev. Options and Check Force GPU Rendering and Disable hardware overlays
2. See what's eating your RAM... sometimes the overall UI gets laggy when the RAM is almost full
3. Make sure your Power Saving mode is turned off... because Temple Run 2 works lag-free even when my Power Saving mode is on
4. Don't use Samsung's stock launcher.. it can get laggy sometimes and eats a lot of RAM btw...
5. Use governors like OnDemand. Performance or PegasusQ with I/Os like SIO or BFQ
