I am not sure but whenever I enter Google Play on (any nightly of) CM9, it is very laggy. When I scroll, you can clearly notice the lag. This also happens sometimes when I click on that menu icon on the home page to bring the whole apps list on my TP. I have overclocked it to 1.7GHZ but no diff.
Is my TP defected or is other people experiencing same or do I need to make some settings adjustments?
Thanks for your help

A few of the recent nightlies had UI performance issues. Are you on 5/9 or earlier, or 5/22 or newer? If not, try one of those.

Is it only in the Google Play store? If so, it might just be streaming data in. I'd recommend using a benchmark tool like Antutu or Quadrant to see if your Touchpad stacks up to others. Don't put too much weight on the numbers though. Performance on the Touchpads should improve as CM gets to closer to a stable release.
I have installed latest nightly.
STILL SAME ISSUE...lags when I scroll the app list. I also noticed lag when I select an app and scroll through the screenshots for that app posted by the dev (above user comments)...
I will try running benchmark and post results soon.
Ok so according to Antutu, this is what I get.
CPU: 2965
GPU: 1468
Ram 1419
I/O: 577
TotalScore: 6429
Is that normal? Good/Bad?
ThankU
Scrolling in google play has always been laggy for me but has gotten a little better.

When I wiped my ext partition and had maybe 20 default apps on, the app launcher moved like a beast, instant, basically like the godly iphone UI + a discrete adjuster.
However now I'ved restored my 250ish apps/elements it now lags like a mofo. What I want to know is what physically is being limited hardware wise, and is there any way to boost the performance of this memory? I assume it would be between CPU, RAM and GPU, although I dont understand how it could be annoy of those [sorry for my noobishness]:
CPU: Snapdragon, OCed, not exactly CPU intensive anyway
RAM: Have 250MB free, never seems to get 'full' when i quickly tab to the usage
GPU: This is what I guess, but if so why cant we get around this with a less intensive menu setup? Surely all that is happening is we have 20-25 icons + labels floating up and down on a screen? To be honest id prefer literally just that on an instant screen over the 'oo that looks nice.... oh wait it lags like a *****' we have now.
Any comments would be appreciated
MOD EDIT - Moved to Q&A
well, one thing which would probably slow down the launcher is the sd card speed... and considering u've got a helluva lot of apps on ur sd card, it seems like a plausable reason...
Is anyone able to confirm that? Surely though its precached the icons and names somewhere though :/

if you use CM rom you can go to spare parts and enable "keep launcher in memory" that usually helps a lot
I have Kang, so has a launcher over CM. The setting was enabled, but i dissabled and renabled to see if that was a problem. Possibly did solve a bit of it, but it still takes at least half a second for the menu to catch up with my finger, even including 'touch lag'. The only way you can see what I mean is if you play with an empty phone, its INSTANT.

You mean the activity/app choice list right? (like when you make a application shortcut, or view installed applications). It does lag when you have a lot of apps. If it does cache the data its definitely short-term, if you try it again after a day its slow the first time.
Lets hope froyo has something to make it faster, systemwide.

I assume the only difference between our phones then is SD card.

Hmmm :/ So its not my SD card. I just dont understand why it physically lags, when I watch people showcasing some new app etc, their menu is perfectly fluid, even with a similar number of apps.
Anyone have any other ideas?
Hey all,
Thank's for a great forum. I've been searching everything I could find about this weird behavior on the Samsung Galaxy Note.
1. I made factory reset.
2. Formatted SD
3. Rooted and installed RocketRom V17 with Abyssnote 3.0.
4. Regardless of launcher, LauncherPro, Go Launcher, ADW Launcher, SPB Shell 3D I still experience lag when scrolling, opening apps (random freeze lag with 1-2 seconds).
5. Even with wiping cache, reboot several times, using SetCPU, Autostart, Memorykillers etc... still lag appears every know and then.
At the moment I've given upp and can't find any solution the problem more than it is faulty hardware. It's kinda annoying when showing the phone to friends and you click on facebook, 1-2 seconds lag, or clicking on sms or gallery and you have 1-2 seconds lag, same sometimes when you click on camera... There’s nearly a 2 second delay when you take the phone away from your ear. The screen takes a long time to reappear so you can just hang up the call or sometimes even answer the call.
I know that a lot of people don't care about this but with this phone being such a masterpiece this shouldn't happen.

Same problem the lag is annoyin as hell. Bought note 2 days ago and feel like returning it until I tryed ics alpha which is smoother than stock roms, but way too buggy.
So the only reason I'm keaping this laggy phone is ics.
Btw galaxy nexus lags as much without 2d acceleration.
Well don't get me wrong, the phone is really fast and the GPS is amazing, fastets and best I've seen in a phone. Sometimes when driving I activate it, use google maps and satelite view, blows people away since their Iphones can't keep up.
i hv experience lagginess as well on all 3rd party launcher. LauncherPro being the smoothest, but the lag still there. I end up using stock TWlauncher, coz thats the only launcher that i will call smooth.
For this issue i would not call it a hardware problem.. Do you have the same lag as well on stock TWlauncher? On TWlauncher I would say its 100% buttery smooth, at least on mine.
So, but those launcher running fine on other phone, why would it lag on G.Note?
I believe its the 1280x800 high resolution that these 3rd party launcher are not designed to handle. But the way I see it, its not hardware problem.
Dude same problem here with 2 to 3 sec of lag, I have the exact same version of ROM as yours and I'm facing the same problem, I tried almost everything, so many apps and mods but nothing works it's always there. One moment its buttery smooth and the next it lags and I just got over it....
Other than that it just works fine.......

Well the lag, with scrolling is there sometimes on touchwiz especially when going from homemenu to appdrawer but, the main problem I'd say is the 1-3 seconds lag when clicking on an app installed/system. With LauncherPRO I have 0 lag with scrolling both in Homemenu with widgets and going from home to appdrawer.
I know that IOS and Android need to first start apps and then it will stay in memory for faster start the next time, but even frequently used ones like Contacts or SMS or SETTINGS or FACEBOOK will have the 1-3 second lags even if I started them and jump out using home menu. I think this i generally after a lockscreen or screen going dark or phone being idle. And I'm using default locksreen. This will not happen everytime and thats why I assume it's either a hardware issue with RAM or bad memory management, like I remember I saw on IOS when they started with MULTITASKING. I was searching and found people having LAG or FREEZE after a lockscreen, but the solutions for that didn't make my 1-3 random lag go away unfortunelty.
Thansk for a great forum and I hope we don't go black on the 18th.
I think the random bits of lag have a lot to do with the cpu governor. Which cpu governors are you guys using? If u monitor your cpu frequency with a widget you'll notice the lag is only when there's a drop in cpu clock. Using lulzactive i see some occasional lag. Lesser with ondemand and least with performance of course. Wonder if there's a way to adjust response times for the governors.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
For ondemand governor, there is.
In directory /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand
There are a few files controlling the parameters of this governor. The ones that might make this governor raise speed faster are up_threshold and sampling_rate.
At the moment I'm trying without SetCPU since my friends Note is default everything, however I will try SetCPU and Performance and see ... I don't care bout battery life since I'm used to charge my phone everyday.
Had my tab 8.9 for about 2 days now and so far the only thing that's annoying me is the lag, the browser has crashed too many times to count and the home screen is constantly freezing and stuttering and ive noticed when i have about 4 apps open the task manager is showing under 100mb of ram left which is pitiful for the 1gb the tablet actually has,
Knowing my luck this is just a faulty unit and will need to be replaced asap before it pisses me of further and i end up throwing it down the mountain

Strange take it back too shop or try it with different people wifi
I would say there is a lag issue by the number of posts in Google (try searching "samsung galaxy tab 8.9" AND lag).
A few things to check:
- Try an update (latest should be HC 3.2).
- Try different a browser (Dolphin HD is good option so check if crashing on different browser).
- I've read that turning off in Settings Animations helps and as well as Motion Settings.
- Try a different launcher. Have heard ADW makes things smoother (try Go Launcher as well).
- More drastic measures include installing a new rom but would wait for the ICS update (which is my golden hope to fix).
If still an issue, then take it back in to show them. I am hoping ICS does make things smoother.
Yes I am also pinning my hopes on ics as it should sort everything out, im on stock 3.2 atm but have also tried the overcome rom but don't know about changing the kernel to help speed things up or even over clocking. dolphin hd hasn't improved it that much if anything it just prolongs the time until the browser closes itself without warning, and ill give the settings a try and report. thanks for the help

Shouldn't be getting FC's on browsing so suggests something else.
Maybe a dalvik wipe is in order in cwm.
Btw, SetCPU which is a paid app allows you to oc and I think overcome has oc support. There are other free oc apps as well.

I play Android Drag Racing on my Tab and it does seem to lag a bit. I cannot hit the shifts that I can with my Galaxy S II; not even close. The 3.2 update did not help...
Yeah, this browser scroll lag is killing me. I've got an LTE and it scrolls so much slower than my Dell Steak on 2.2 scrolls so much smoother. My 8.9 feels like I'm pulling my finger through molasses. Even Opera scrolls slow. It is very annoying.
Ive just ordered one of these because they are on sale in the UK at the moment. It was either this or an original Xoom, both are £279 at the moment..
In the shop the xoom was silky smooth in either orientation, but the Tab was laggy. I just assumed it was the store unit that had been messed about with by customers. So it effects all units? It was pretty bad, i hope it can be fixed otherwise it will have to go back. Im beginning to think i made the wrong choice..

Personally I do not think you have made the wrong choice. Any lag issues with the interface can be easily fixed by downloading a different launcher from Play Google The Xoom comes with the stock version of Android Honeycomb and this is why it appears smoother. Android Ice Cream Sandwich brings performance improvements so should be smoother even with Samsung's TouchWiz launcher in place once Samsung have released the update; alternatively you can install a different version of the OS, even a stock version through Galaxian-Soup, if you feel there are still issues.
Its not just that though is it. The browser is laggy, Maps was much slower, some games have issues and i have seen reports that the Xoom handles HD movie playback better. I really torn over this because i prefer the 8.9 physically, but the lag is a real killer. I factory reset a store tab today and it was still super laggy.
I have both arriving tomorrow which is when i will decide.
The Xoom has much more mature ICS ROMs with no issues. The ICS ROMs for the 8.9 still seem laggy in the vids i have seen.

Performance issues are one thing, but complaining about "100MB of RAM left" is ignorant. The whole point of having RAM is to use it. Android isn't like Windows, it uses RAM to cache aggressively - a desirable behaviour.
In other words, if your tab isn't using most of the memory then you've got an inefficient device.

While I agree with the above statements, the tablet caching bloatware apps in RAM is still a waste. Why is the stupid thing cashing Social Hub, Media Hub, Samsung App Store, Accuweather, etc, when I don't have accounts set up on those or have them running on a homescreen or widget? On a fresh reboot, I can use the TW Task Manager's 'Clear Memory' button and it kills 20+ apps and frees ~200MB of RAM. Waste.

Yeah, I tried all the build.prop tweaks but they don't seem to improve anything. I don't think hardware acceleration is working. Menus scroll fine but the browsers scroll poorly. I'm running the Telus rom with the OC kernel on my At&t unit.
Has anyone tried this mod?

Did a fresh install (wiped everything/cache) and using 220sys, 8cache (the one for Evervolv JB, so no change needed if upgradting to JB later) partitions. 1GB a2sd ext. Using smartassv2 governor.
It's laggy ---- press an icon/menu and I can feel significant lag before the app opens, and the time it take to start an app (e.g. facebook, skype, google voice) is MUCH more than CM7.2
Are these things I should try to alleviate this?
Other than the speed problem, it seems to work fine, but it's too slow as a daily driver...
Thanks,

I did turn off the animation. However, the lag happens when starting app, going around within app. It feels not just animation related.
Trying BCM(now SpazeDog) now. It feels a bit better. (I did use the same min/max cpu/governor when comparing them)
Greetings,
I have a problem with my S Advance. The UI is very slow, the apps working fine, I mean I can play Dead Trigger well, Temple Run 2 also run greats, but the UI is really slow.
I noticed it while I had to look for something on my old Galaxy Ace. And it was pretty weird that it feeled faster than the S Advance. So I compared them, and it was true, the whole UI in the Ace is a lot faster.
So, the best way to show the differences between the speed of UI, I recorded the stock Notes app opening on the both phone.

For me, CoCore E 5.0 with some props tweak improve ui response significantly.
Here are some ground rules for you to consider.
Use custom launcher like Holo Launcher HD, or if you like stock, go for modded one here in our forum.
Use ui build.prop tweaks like debug.sf.hw, or something similar.
Use good cpu scheduler like pegasusQ or OndemandQ with zen or sio (zen and cfq proven to be stable for me as a multitasker)
Use themed systemui, this helps a little bit, depends on your configuration
Play with your kernel, CoCore have some useful tweaks like Touch Booster controls and etc.
Also try to see your wakelock usage. Greenify proven for me to be most helpful in this area. Good luck
After upgrading to Jellybean (XXLQ4), my S Advance has been faster than ever... hmm.. try this, it could help....
1. Go to Settings > Dev. Options and Check Force GPU Rendering and Disable hardware overlays
2. See what's eating your RAM... sometimes the overall UI gets laggy when the RAM is almost full
3. Make sure your Power Saving mode is turned off... because Temple Run 2 works lag-free even when my Power Saving mode is on
4. Don't use Samsung's stock launcher.. it can get laggy sometimes and eats a lot of RAM btw...
5. Use governors like OnDemand. Performance or PegasusQ with I/Os like SIO or BFQ
