Please HELP!! - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please check this out.
Today I took the calculator and this is what I see. (This is a photo taken from the screen issues thread. I couldnt get this on my camera but I just wanted to show you guys that this is exactly what I see.) These kinds of artifacts or whatever you may call it appears during video playback too. Everything else displays fine on my note. White is pure white, No tints, no hue changes, nothing. But I see these kinds of artifacts a lot and I have severe black clipping too.
Please help me out here. Those of you who are facing an exact same issue, please report here with a photo of your screen.

yep, send to samsung for repair
if you dont care for warrantee, try different kernel or rom altogether
or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1715416

That's horrible!
Get it replaced.
How does it look like on ICS ?
Over all banding / clipping is reduced on ICS (even on stock firmware/kernel)

I guess something wrong with the screen is the same happening for all apps or just this one mate ?

I'm on ICS 4.0.3 latest Stock Indian DDLPA firmware. There is severe clipping for me when playing videos and these purple and greenish artifacts used to appear in dark videos too. I thought this was part of the black clipping issue but now when this shows up in calculator, it looks horrible.
Please note that the screen looks flawless otherwise. Whites are white, no tints, no lines, no hue changing, nothing. But view anything dark and these kinds of atrefacts seem to pop up.

yeah its weird, sometimes it appears like its an image quality issue, because its not on all images

But my question is, do you people have the Calculator app showing up like this? Is this a hardware defect? Its because I've seen some photos of screens which display the calculator this way and also screens which display a blue banding which seems to be a lot better compared to this.
the sad part is my screen is flawless when displaying other colours and even while browsing and as far as what I've seen, every screen seems to have some or the other issue which makes me scared to get the screen replaced. Here in India, we dont get the phone replaced. Only a part which is found to be defective is replaced.

I'm not sure if the banding you have happens to pretty much everyone else but I took a screenshot of my calculator app, and the 'banding' is there.

You got to take a photo not a screen-shot.

I have the same occurrence when I start the Calculator app. My device is a UK handset purchased from Amazon UK and it is currently running on CheckROM Revo NoteHD v5.
I suppose the 'issue' is not limited only to handsets in India.

yeah but its a background image issue, other images dont have this right

It seems to appear only when I use the Calculator app. Should I perform any specific set of tests? If so, then please list them.
Thank you.

best would be to download different quality images with dark and bright ones and check for distortions when viewing full screen.
For movie issues, dark movies or clips on youtube can help. Getting clipping reduced see links above or do as is needed go to Samsung and complain for bad product

Do you have the exact same issue when opening the calculator??
If so, how do videos and images show up on your note?
How long are you living with this??

Hello satishp, I seem to have paid close attention to this 'issue' only after reading this thread you have initiated. Also, the only videos I have are the ones I recorded using the device itself and these were primarily done during daytime. I have not noticed any considerable peculiarity with images
Could you point me to specific images and videos as a reference point? Perhaps a video(s) you watched on YouTube or a specific movie and an image(s) you referred to from a website?
I can use these to test my device and report back quickly.

Search for the Iron Man trailer in Youtube. Check out the dark areas.
Even try watching any videos with a dark scene. You'll notice it.
You wont see any issues with bright videos with good lighting, Check out the dark ones.
And watch these in a preferably dark or dimly lit room.

I have seen 4 SGN's and all have this issue upto variable degrees. My first note had hue problems, my cousins note has moderate clipping. my 2nd note have clipping too. The note of service centre guy was almost perfect, although it also failed the gamma test. Since i cudnot sell my seal-packed note without taking huge losses, i opened it and stopped myself onion peeling it. Need to convince myself of the other gudness of it except the black clipping.

omg, i just saw those saturn rings on my calculator screen !!

Propably the magnet from receiver?

lol no, its something with the background picture. You dont have it in all pictures do you?
test this, take dark high resolution image.
make it lower resolution like 200 by 200 or lower then screen, safe it under different name on pc.
transfer to phone, check the differences, this might show some interesting stuff

Heard that it's mainly the presets that mess up the image. At least with pictures, manual settings prove to make way better pictures. So do your own whitebalance, lower the brightness a bit.
Indeed heared the same thing. On an other forum someone posted 2 pictures 1 with the auto settings and 1 with manual settings and you really saw the huge different in quaility.
I have attachted the 2 pictures in quesiton. You can see the difference for yourself.
the difference on these two pictures could also be, that on manual setting the sun is behind (southeast) him and on auto setting the sun is infront (northeast) of him. It would be better if we get some pictures taken in a row.
Interesting stuff. Would love to see some more comparison shots, as the poor reviews for the camera is one of the things putting me off this phone.

Indeed but when you look at the shadow of the car you see it moved a bit. But the rest of the picture is way better i'll try to do some tests of my own tommorow afternoon.

@ all the owners:
Could you please test the camera with photos and videos and finally clarify once forever these ''mist problems'' ?
Just if its possible to fix with some software adjustments or its an hardware problem...
Thanks
Ah... yeah I really hate that "mist-effect" too. It's the main reason why I'm considering Not buying the 2X and wait for 3D and hope that they've fixed that issue...
I read a review on phonearena.com and they showed a colorfilter called "vivid" which increased the contrast quite alot. That fixed the "mist" problem but then I think the contrast is a bit too high there. But definitely MUCH better.
Anyone know if it's possible to adjust the contrast in the cam app?

LG know there's an issue with the auto settings. And as you can see, if you set it up manually the pictures are just fine. So just wait for a small update, and the issue will be fixed....No biggie really, and defo not HW related.

I took the pictures, so let me nip that in the bud.
The pictures were taken in north eastern direction and indeed there is some difference in time when I took them (1st auto settings: 13:00 and 2nd manual setting 14:30). But there was no sunlight directly in the lens and I used my hand to drop a shadow. Before I took both photos I cleaned the lens cover thoroughly.
As supported by other users: the automatic settings tend to overexpose and the automatic white balance is just miles off. I am sure LG will fix this in a future update and otherwise I'll just keep setting it up manually as I do with my dslr.

can you tell us which settings you changed and to what you changed it?
because from my opinion it does make a good improvement to the auto settings.
thx in advance
To make photo quality better and less blurred - just turn "Stabilization" - "Off".
But it's make sense only for photo mode, video still no solution.

I didn't do more than change the white balance to "sunlight" and underexpose two stops. The under/over -expose function is the "+/-" -sign in the first menu when you press the screen in camera mode. Under exposing is only recommended on a bright day. The biggest improvment is the whitebalance, stay away from the "automatic" -setting.
I am very impressed by all the camera setup options on this phone!
And what about the video? Are they fine?
Hi
I have ordered the 2x and uses a Desire now.
It had the same problem initially.
After first removing the grease (from production) on the lens and on the backside of the protective plastic, the pictures was fully useable.
Later on I removed the easy scratched protective plastic altogether and problem solved.

I haven't tried out video yet, but it uses the same setup options. So my guess is that video suffers from the same issues with automatic white balance.

For anyone interested (you've probably read most of the pro's and con's before, or else why would you be here) - I did a small mini-review of the Nexus 7 I received from ebuyer today.

is the image retention issue solved on the production unit and how's the sky video chat image quality (when viewed on other device)?
The Gmail app on the Nexus 7 is good, nicely laid out. Would benefit from a landscape view though. . (again, probably fixable by with a different launcher)

"There’s only 1 speaker on it (so watching films is in mono, and only out of the right side of the device)"

Image retention? If you explain this a bit more i'll try and help.
'Sky' video chat? If you meant Skype - it's awful! I just skyped a friend with a Nexus 7 and the orientation was wrong on the viewing window, and it was very poor quality.
We tested Google Hangout after and it was a lot better.

Thanks for the quick verification. Based on some reviews for the google IO units, the Skype video chat image is choppy and awful. This however seems to be related to the Skype application so hope Skype will release updates to fix this soon.
You can find many image retention topic related to the IO units. Basically if you display a bright logo or image on screen for short period of time and then switch to a darker background screen you'll still see a faint logo/image stuck on the screen but may disappear soon. (kinda like screen burn in on those plasma TVs but much shorter interval.)

I think it offers a degree of asthetics though to have a uniform grill going across, which may be the reasoning behind it.

Fair enough - apologies, it would appear there are 2 speakers under the 1 grill but as I said - that's completely pointless. You lose any kind of stereophonic effect by stuffing both speakers to one side under 1 grill.
The playbook (for all its flaws!) does this right, it's a great sounding device.
Updated my original post to give a bit of an FAQ, and confirm that it's possible to view Adobe Flash Player content in the browser on the Nexus 7, albeit not in full-screen unfortunately.

Benchmarks NEEDED quickly
DETAILED BENCHMARKS
Please makae a video showing the various benchmarks
and also please make a video about Gaming Performance make a video of some really graphic intensive big games PLEASE
any heating issues or lag
1).Test the USB OTG with a pendrive of 16 gb or more as we will require this feature as N4 doesnot have microsd card slot.
2). I have heard that the colours on N4 are dull n luk washed off so please compare it with same content running on both phone.
3).I have also heard that the back is made up of glass and it wont allow any heat to pass thorugh it so please check whether the phone gets hot during benchmark or playing hardcore games for 20-30 mins.
4).how are the camera samples of N4 the colours, noise, low lighting conditions, moving objects, other basic stuff.
5).How long does the phone last on average usage.
6).Tell us how long does it take to charge the phone.
7).One more important thing which other reviewers dont mention also tell us about the call quality and vibration after all its a mobile phone.
8).Also test the sound quality
9).tell us any other problem or lag that you are facing.
it would be really nice if you can make a video or answer theese questions PLEASE BE QUICK
First of all, thanks for the video. Try to plan it out better next time though, so you don't say "ummm" a lot. Still a great video though, and I appreciate the effort
As far as things that I would like to see:
1) Can you please a get a really good close up of the screen/bezel border on the front? I want to know if there's as big of a gap as the Gnex
2) Open up settings, and get a closeup of the background (preferably in a dark room). I wanna know if they fixed that stupid gradient issue in 4.2, and if LCD vs. AMOLED might make it less obvious.
Thanks

I will work on these. But guys I'm not doing benchmarks..... there are some pretty good ones already done and I don't see that as being something I can do in a video.
It's fantastic, thanks man.
do you have an S3 handy? Wouldn't mind seeing an HONEST opinion about the screen differences between a Samoled screen vs this one.. if not then that's cool too thanks for doing this!
Screen Sensitivity
Hi, appreciate the effort you're putting in friend.
1 thing I can think of now that I'm quite curious about is the screen senstitivity of the phone.
Can you do the following please?:
1. (If you haven't already) Go to Settings > Options > About Phone > Tap 'Build Number' a few times till you turn developer options on.
2. Open developer options and turn on the 'Pointer Location' option.
3. Keep an eye on the 'Prs' value at the top of the screen and make as light a touch as possible around the screen. Record the lowest value you can get.
Can you also try and input text at a rapid pace and see how successful it is?
The reason behind all this is that there have been some reports of very poor screen sensitivity on the phone meaning that higher pressure is needed for the phone to register a touch.
Would it be possible for you to make a comparison to another android phone? Galaxy S'x' or a the Galaxy Nexus (if you own one)?
There's a thread in the Q/A forum where people are discussing this but I'm not able to post links yet. It's quite worrying.
Thanks

Ahaha I kid. I kid.
Actually all we want to know are three things...
1. does it rattle
2. is there a touch sensitivity problem.
3 and does an intensive game get even slightly laggier the longer its played.
If none of these issues exist..we would be VERY VERY HAPPY...Please reply.

So... Bsi sensor bleeding

Reminiscent of the HTC one it seems that my unit has a blue bleed onto the sensor from the backside illumination. Look up the m7 low light issues. They get worse over time so I'm thinking what will happen is it starts out very mild as it is now and gets significantly worse as time progresses. Here is an example.
You really have to look for it to see it. Crank up brightness and such. When taking low light photos the outer parts must be dark. But really this bs from a flagship. I'll be returning this phone. LG g3 here I come no more bs knox!

Then clearly progresses into a full blown bad sensor. Looks like you completely missed my point of find it now, see if it's a widespread issue like the m7, track it to see if it gets worse, and fix it under warranry or replace if it's within return period like me. Above was my wife's htc one she never sent in(otterbox) next to an htc one we sent in and got back with a good sensor.
So it only gets worse... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595534 and the main reference http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317507
Again I only made this thread because this is exactly how my wife's m7 started before it turned horrid. I played xcom on my phone which made it pretty hot for extended periods and ad the first thread states apparently gets worse with heat.
made a mistake using image shack.
heres a better look

That looks more like noise from really high ISO to me.
Looks kinda like noise to me too

I was thinking the same thing
I made a test taking a picture with the lights off and the phone agains my bed.
ISO 100 --> a very nice black photo
Auto ISO (a very high ISO, i can't remember the value, but it's extremely high) --> you can see at the center of the photo a perfect black, but in the corners you can see some purple tint. It looks like noise, but it's a strange behavior that just the corners are affected.
why is it assumed that since you have the faulty sensor thats just how the S5 was made. maybe you have a faulty device and it needs excahnged. try a second device and see how it is. if its similar thgen this maybe an issue. but one thing from one device isnt "bs from a flagship device"
It gets worse if you enable picture stabilization. Mine has quite a bit in low light, but as FarKeld noted, it all goes away at low iso settings.
with picture stabilization ISO goes up to 2000
btw: I'm getting an annoying error "Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped" every time I try to see my photos

Try wiping your gallery and media storage data (via Settings). I had the same issue with Gallery and this fixed it.

it was a corrupted file, I deleted it and now the gallery works good
I Just realized how apparent it is in low light video. I guess it was iso noise or no picture at all.

Yellow tint that goes away after tilting the display

Wondering if anyone else has similar issues

Can you be more specific? Brightness level, which direction your tilting it, whole screen/part of screen etc
All brightness level. The whole screen had a yellow hue if look at it straightly. But the yellow tint will disappear if the phone is tiled to any direction by 10 degrees.

Mine does this too- it's a "feature" of the last gen OLED displays that Samsung have fixed with the new gen (which Moto obviously couldn't source for this phone). My Nex did this too. Screen adjuster + manual brightness over 50% fixes it for me

interesting.. you mind sharing you setting for the screen adjuster? It's quite obvious and I wonder how all those online reviews don't seem to mention it. A blob of yellow/orange-ness moving across the screen as you tilt the phone
Just went to att store and it seems their display device also have the similar issue but a bit less. Maybe NY last phone, HTC one x, and retina mbp have made me too sensitive for such color changes..

Started the RMA process, hopefully the new phone would work better. I am surprised at the small number of screen complaints about this phone, since samsung's amoled has always had a huge problem with screen consistency.

I have the same issue too. Just started the replacement process but not sure if the one I receive would be any better. Maybe almost everyone face this issue and dont notice it?
I get it too, but everything else is perfect with this phone and I'd hate to replace it and not only get the same issue again, but maybe another issue too.

Likely. I went to att store and their display unit also does this, bit a bit better and less noticeable. Mine is really obvious that there is a yellow tint that fade in and out as I tilt the screen.

Yeah, I was torn for a day and ended up getting a replace since it's just too obvious and everyone else I asked could easily recognize it.

Well, let us know when you get the new one if it's any better.

Definitely. Btw, what are some other problems that you mentioned might occur when getting a new phone? big gaps between backing and the metal frame? buttons don't work?

It seems like the back panel material some times peels off and the buttons for some seem bad.
Edit:
There's also the chance of getting a bad battery or an underperforming processor.

sounds scary.. does motorola really have such bad quality control? I know their plant where all our moto x 2014 are built is going to close by the end of the year and I am sure the people there aren't very enthusiastic about high quality.

I don't think so, but anything can happen. And not just with Motorola, defects happen everywhere. I guess my point was that since everything else with my phone is perfect except for a yellow tint depending on viewing angle, I'm not going to roll the dice and replace it unless I know the yellow screen is a fluke.

I see. I guess we will figure out soon. I don't mind the yellow tint, but I hated when I tilt it by 20 degrees the whole screen changes from yellow to blue, the color change is just too big.

Mine is slightly yellow when looking directly, but does not turn blue when tilted. Just crisp white. It's not very drastic.

Yea, I would be very happy if my screen is the same as the one I saw in ATT store, where there''s still some yellow tint, but it's lighter and much harder to notice, even in full brightness. Keeping my fingers crossed.
