Ok, so I just got this samsung captivate and I want to root it. I can't get anywhere close to rooting it because when I plug it in via USB, windows doesn't do anything. I have my phone set to USB debugging and sometimes I have to unplug/replug the mini usb from the phone several times before it actually goes into "USB Debugging" mode. I have installed the necessary drivers but windows still does not acknowledge that I am even plugging in the phone via USB. I have tried downloading kies and that didn't work either. I don't think anything is going to work until I can make windows acknowledge that the USB device is even connected. I have also tried the *#7482# trick and it didn't help. Could it be another setting on my phone or something that is preventing my phone from connecting to my computer? It is really starting to agitate me because I want to get rid of all this crappy bloatware.
Maybe this stickied thread in the General forum can help... Captivate Connection Issues....

Turn USB debugging off and check if it sees it then...

So I'm having an issue connecting my captivate to my Windows 7 64bit machine. (Seems to be a common problem) I've installed the drivers from the posts on these forums. I have changed the USB settings to Mass storage also. If I plug my phone in, Windows will "sometimes" recognize it and the internal and external SD will show up in "My Computer" This only happens sometimes and moving the plug to other USB ports gets it to recognize. I'm then able to mount and everything works fine. But the problem I'm having is USB debugging mode. Any time I have this turned on and plug my phone in, Windows will "attempt" to install a driver but after awhile fail. I've tried to manually install the drivers but no luck. Anyone know why just USB debugging will not work? I tried it on my friends computer who has the exact same version of Windows and the exact same drivers for the phone and it works find every time I plug it in, USB debugging or not. So strange.
Thanks
Try a different USB port on your PC.

Ok so got it working with the back USB port... so strange that I have to do that. Is this something that will be fixed in the future?

I don't think anyone knows where the problem lies. Seems more likely it is the PC or a windows 7 x64 issue.
Well, when I plug my phone into either my ps3 or computer the phone will recognize that it is in USB, but in the pulldown menu it gives me no option to mount it. What would cause this? I tried restarting my phone, but that didn't help.

Settings -> Application -> USB Settings -> Ask on Connect
As long as your pc doesnt display a message telling you the device has malfunctioned and windows doesnt recognize it its more than likely configuration issue with your phone.
the usb connection interface is wonky and Ive replaced one phone already because it failed completeley.
Good luck hope this helps.
I don't think that would have fixed it anyway. It recognized that it was connected in mass storage, but it just didn't give me the option to mount it for some reason. Anyway, I got it to recognize it after I kept switching mass storage on and off

You never mentioned you had USB debugging enabled? Did you?
I am using a Custom ROM and from time to time my computer doesn't recognize that I have connected my phone via USB. I usually can be sure on my Computer Explorer isn't opened then disconnect and re connect USB cable. Also if my phone has been connected and I haven't Mounted and phone "goes to sleep". I have to disconnect USB,Wake the phone and then connect USB and immediately Mount.

It wasn't my computers problem though, thats the thing... It was something with the phone. I still don't know exactly what is causing it, but this is not the first time it has happened.
Hey guys today my second USB port stopped working for ODIN.
The front two on my PC don't work for it and I got 4 left on the back, is there any way to solve this issue?
uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers then rebooting has always fixed it for me. if that isn't working i've got no clue. sorry i couldn't be more helpful i guess.
Yea I know but same problem.
I'm anxiously saving money for a GS2 and Netbook.

also have the same problem with my old pc, two front usb don't work with odin, but work with anything else.
I've had this same problem, and I haven't been able to fix it. But now I've switched to Ubuntu and Heimdall.
I don't know if this will work for you, but this USBDeview looks like it might do the trick: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
I assume you are using Windows, and if you are, there is one trick that I have used in the past to fix other devices. This *might* work for you. Try removing the non present devices from device manager. In order to do this, you need to Google how to view Nonpresent devices in device manager. This trick will show you every device that has every been plugged into each USB port. You can then go in and remove the drivers that were previously installed for your phone on that port. Whenever you remove the nonpresent device, next time it is plugged in, the computer will think that it has never been plugged into that USB port before.
Hope that helps!
Im serious about the new cable. I had a problem with the default usb cable before until a friend gave me his mt4g usb and never had a problem again. I think its a data miscommunication with the t959 stock usb. I lost any ODIN connection on all ports until I switched. Try it. Youll see.

That's actually what USBDeview does.
Hey guys, been trying to figure out how to connect my phone to my pc without having to have kies installed on every computer I access using the usb cable. After struggling for a while I figured out the problem was because I had usb debugging mode activated, and once I unchecked it abracadabra! I was able to access my memory card just like any regular flash disk. The only problem am experiencing now is that, even though I have usb debugging unchecked, every time I connect the usb cable it automatically becomes checked again. meaning I have to go through the long process of going to settings> applications> development, to uncheck it again. Why is this happening?

Install these samsung drivers and you will be able to do so.

Dont quite get the problem.
When I plug in the USB cable to the phone and PC, the phone's task bar shows a small icon at the top. I pull down the task bar (or what ever it is called - it is pull down), touch the info about USB, and up comes a dialog box about enabling USB storage. I touch OK, and there is a warning about not being able to use apps on the USB. I touch OK again, and I am now connected to the PC.
First time or so, I was asked to turn off USB debugging, and never had to do it again.
Then maybe its an issue with my phone, originating from the factory, coz everytime I connect I am forced to go find the usb debugging option from way deep in settings coz nothing appears in the drop down task bar until I uncheck it. I am now getting paranoid considering the first time I bought it and took it home I found out that the standard micro sd card I was issued with did not work and had to go back to the store and get a replacement card. Maybe I should have opted for a different phone too. "cockroach theory"

Thanks for the drivers, but that was not the solution I was looking for exactly as that would mean I would have to install them on every computer I ever connect to, seeing as I prefer to double up my phone as a flash disk too coz its harder to loose and no pal would ever ask to use your phone to go borrow something (thats how flashdisks get lost) and I can also charge the phone when am copying new movies and songs, catch my drift.

If i recall correctly this also happened to me when i bought the phone. But after i installed samsung kies or the drivers it got ok. But as you say, if you use many computers its not pratical. I mainly use this one so no problem for me.

When you use your phone as a flash drive, you can expect to use it as a normal flash drive - simply plug it in, and the PC recognises a USB mass storage device. There ought to be no need for any drivers. Even on windows PCs.
But, you will have to unmount the SD card from within the phone.
If you need to disable USB debugging mode each time, try disabling USB debugging without the USB cables plugged in The phone ought to remember it. The menu option is, IIRC, settings > USB and media.
Things are slightly different in 2.2.2 froyo, 2.4.5, 2.4.6 and the current 7.1 CM custom kernel I am using. So, I cannot exactly remember the menu option. But, it is not a driver issue.
BTW, I installed the samsung USB drivers for Kies and ODIN from the phone on a newly installed OS, and was on stock 2.2.2 Froyo then so I am very sure that this is not a USB drivers issue.
My phone just updated to 2.3.6 and every time I plug the USB cable in, debugging mode automatically activates, even though I have unchecked it without USB cable plugged or after it was plugged. When I try to enter mass storage mode I get prompted that some apps might not work while in this mode. I tap OK and the phone tries to connect but after a while reverts back to debugging. That would not be a problem if I was at my home computer as running keys unlock the mass storage mode adn I can use Total commander to load what I want, but when at work, I do not have admin right so I can not install driver. Until yesterday I was on Froyo 2.2.1 and mass storage was no issue...

I knew this is an old post, but i had to reply this.
I had the same situation. i also lost the USB Storage function after upgraded to 2.3.6 DXKT5.
so , now i unable to use TV or SetTopBox to play the files inside the S5830. too sad.
I wish i could revert back to FROYO v2.2.1 , yet , i unable to find a valid/working download link for Froyo 2.2.1 DXKC1 , so i had to stick with it now or later.

Alright, So I'm looking to help a friend get to the point where they can plug in their Droid 3 and it actually work.
Have plugged into every USB port, have installed the drivers Verizon reccomends installing for the device.
Basically we called up Verizon, and requested to get a actual OEM/Motorla cable. They sent a actual Motorola cable. Still doesn't work.
From what I understand the device has only been detected ONCE, and it was unsuccessful at finding drivers, now when you plug it in it doesn't even try to look for drivers. It just charges. gives you no options to mount or anything.
I've shot in and uninstalled alot of the drivers so it would cause it to re-detect and that attempt was unsuccessful as well. Uninstalled the Motorola driver application and did the same thing over, Uninstalled the USB drivers. Still nothing.
The device does run the most current version of Android, It is running stock. any clues?
perhaps try to manually install the drivers control panel/hardware/devices an printers
Have you checked the actual setting for the usb connection itself? Is it on charge only mode? Try a different computer if you can, if not, see if you can change the setting for when you first plug it into a computer, you should get the options of pc mode, charge only, media sync, and hard disk.

Jell - I'll shoot in and give that a shot if I can see if I can, Is i'll check for a driver package on the forums I guess see if anyone has one
Josh -- Not sure how to actually set the setting for the usb connection rather then when you plug it in and it asks for you to set it.
You plug it in and it charges, Doesn't ask what mode you want to put it in. Its like you're plugging it into a charger.
I have the same problem with connecting. My phone isn't recognizing that its plugged into a computer, it thinks it is plugged into a wall charger. It would be nice to know if anyone have figure this problem out.
