Anybody else see VHS VS. Betamax parallels to Android VS iPhone? - Off-topic

I don't know where this thought line came from but I just started thinking and I'm seeing a surprising amount of parallels between the "Videotape format war" and the current Android vs. iPhone war.
Here are just a few (that I'm sure people will be able to add to) :
1.VHS was the cheaper format which was a big factor in it's dominance; Android has gotten on to so many devices in so many different price ranges just about anyone can afford a Smartphone. Betamax was the choice of people with disposable income and videophiles; iPhone is sold at a significant markup for people with excess money to buy as a status symbol.
2. VHS and Betamax entered a sort of race to fit as much video recording space on their respective format; Android and iPhone are engaged in a crazy war of features one-up-manship (coining the word now).
3. VHS won because it was the cheaper and more available format; Android is dominating as far as marketshare for being cheaper and far more widespread (just about anyone can have an Android phone, even people with older WinMo phones, looking at HTC HD2).
Anybody else see anything or am I just making connections that aren't there?

I thought we weren't allowed to have android vs apple threads because they would lead to too much flaming
IB4L
JKJKJKJKJKJKJKJK

It's not an Apple vs Android thread. It's a comparison between format wars in the 80s to the current Smart Phone war. If the mods don't see any potential for actual discussion here they can and should close it.

Isn't point 1 and point 3 the same point?.

Good point. I see them as different because 1 is just a comparison of what the formats have become from a consumer standpoint and 3 is a comparison of the winner of the Format war and what appears to be becoming the winner of the Smart Phone war.
I would consider it pretty accurate to say that price is going to be the deciding factor. The Nexus 7 has been a massive success for Google and I think it's going to represent a paradigm shift in the tablet market.

VHS vs betamax is completely different to the phone market. Different phones have different price points, hardware and software. VHS vs betamax is similar to HD vs Blueray. And in those situations there can only be one winner for mass production and international exports, so companies will make it so there is only 1 winner. There will never be 1 phone manufacturer there are too many variables, target market groups and consumer preferences.

Tripe. Your comparison shows a total lack of understanding. I can only assume that you have never watched a betamax video.......

I see Apple as Laserdisc - beefy, better sound quality, first consumer disc based format, goes out of style real fast.
I see Android as DVD - more streamlined, easier to transport, better use of space for the money.
I loved my laserdiscs for the novelty, but I'll stick with DVD any day of the week.

OP analogy is pretty bad.

Were there lawsuits out the wazoo in the Betamax wars?

Trolling wasn't invented yet.

What about HD DVD and bluray?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app

That wasn't even a war, that was a skirmish between a first-world power and three kids from down the street with supersoakers. HD DVD never stood a chance with only one studio and a paltry number of manufacturers backing it. Bluray had Sony and Panasonic on board off the rip and pretty much every major studio except for MGM I believe. I didn't pay that much attention except to not that HD DVD was going to go down hard so if nothing else had decided me on a PS3 over XBox 360 that would have.

I can't believe I still have a betamax machine, with tons of vhs video... but no vhs player or betamax tapes.
Does this mean I will end up with an iphone that has no apps, and lots of android software?

Absolutely!
Hey, I googled "iPhones and android like VHS and Beta". and your comment here was second on the Google search page, so I had to join to agree. Iphones are too exclusive and a nightmare doing most things that are not with Apple compatible software (like trying to download gmail). It will be there downfall.

Never heard that argument comparison. It's not a great one tbh. It's incredibly favorable to have a Universal media format (i.e. bluray hd dvd), not so much for phones.

I know this is an old post, but still relevant in 2017
Virgin Mobile U.S.A. just went all Apple, no more android phones. Another pet peeve: the usb ports. We had Mini-B and went to Micro-B. USB ports should have all been standardized in my opinion. I have older chargers with with mini-b usb type that are useless now because most electronics are using the micro-b type.
I sort of understand the Blu-ray vs Dvd and at least most players can use both.

Well, Apple...

Dear Apple,
I was talking to a friend and she solely bought Apple products because they were branded "Apple" despite the ridiculous price and low specs. Call me a hater/whatever but I still don't like Apple for this sole reason.
I saw this in the funnies today from the newspaper and I had to wake up early to post this before school..
And it continues..

I agree with you, but there are many more reasons to add
Just wait a bit that off topic addicts see your thread!
I have heard that apple products are getting a new kind of wireless charging system that runs off the smug and hot air coming from the owners mouths!
Awww, the little dog is wearing glasses. Funny strip.
good day.
That's what my whole family does.
Me: I got a new phone.
Aunt: What kind Apple?
Me: No. Samsung Vibrant
Aunt: What is that? I never heard of it. It must not be good since it's not an iPhone.
Me: No. It's better than the iPhone. It's android.
Aunt: Well, it's not apple so it's not GOOD at all.
Blah blah I asked her why the iPhone was so great, she said it's APPLE. blah blah blah.
I hate people that just buys thing because it's the latest trend.

Apple customers just like being abused.
I hate apple because the metal on teh side of my ipad is chipped and i cut my thumb on it
The word sue comes to mind
The only reason why apple is so successful is its (blame me for being a hypocrite if you feel like it):
1) propaganda (oh apple is cool and all that crap)
2) amount of dev's coding apps for it
3) low specs (haha), but great software utilization...[one part that htc fails at])
4) (redundant) but it's immense amount of apps.. again..
LOL. Reminds me of the argument I had with my co-worker when I got my Incredible. He was telling me that the iPhone was the best phone out there. When I asked him why, he says because of the nice icons.
I didn't know how to respond but to laugh.
This video is an accurate portrayal of him and a lot of iPhone guys I know. lol
If all the apps ever made for iphone were ported to android , this will create the most humongous market for android any phone company has ever seen ..

I had to buy a MacBook pro recently, not because its better (although the build and quality is top notch and just about unmatched) but because I needed it for iOS development. I hated how expensive it was for so little spec wise. $400 for the 8GB upgrade WTF! If it wasn't for me requiring OSX, I'd probably never would own a Mac computer.
That said, their phone's are great no matter how you look at it. Antenna **** up aside, most of the drop call blame should squarely be attributed to AT&T. It's a AT&T/US issue.
Now dont get me wrong, I don't blame anyone for hating the US iPhone due to its crappy service because IT IS a legitimate issue. I also don't blame anyone for hating the Apple brand because of it's positioning (style over utility). But when it comes to the iPhone, they got it right.
I was a Palm OS and WinMo user long before all of this, and many of you probably were too. But the original iPhone was such a huge leap forward in terms of what a smart phone user experience should be like. It wasnt as versatile as WinMo but what it made up for in day to day experience was well worth sacrificing some of the utility.
Today iOS 4 has progressed to a state where you pretty much can't complain. The user experience is still top notch and only matched (and maybe even succeeded) by WebOS, and the utility that used to be missing is now there. The phone itself is quality (of course with its issues like almost any other phone). The specs are aggressive, competitive and well priced unlike their other products.
What made the iPhone good is now being matched or exceeded by others (Android/Web OS). But like I said, it has progressed and still is one of the best mobile OSs out there. Hell even the jail breaking community is not much different than what goes on here.
I own both the EVO and a iPhone 4, and if there's one thing that the iPhone still does better, it's giving a amazing experience straight out of the box. I have to spend hours and hours to get the EVO running competively, and I'm still waiting on some things to come through via the amazing developers here, and while I could (and probably should) jail break my iPhone 4, I haven't yet. It runs great as is. And that's a large part of what's keeping the iPhone slightly ahead with non techies.

Winning: Android beats iOS and RIM in US smartphone market

By: Andrew Couts
March 3, 2011
The Android operating system now dominates the US market according to a new Nielsen report. But Apple and RIM remain the winners in the handset race.

Google’s Android operating system has overtaken Apple’s iOS and Research In Motion’s Blackberry OS in the US market, according to new data out from Nielsen. Android has secured 29 percent of the market, while iOS and Blackberry each hold 27 percent.
But that information alone doesn’t tell the whole story. The answer to who’s winning the US smartphone battle, says Nielsen, “depends on whether you’re looking at operating systems or manufacturers.”
Yes, Android wins if operating system is the only value taken into consideration. “But an analysis by manufacturer shows RIM and Apple to be the winners compared to other device makers since they are the only ones creating and selling smartphones with their respective operating systems,” Neilsen points out. That means one third of the smartphone-using population owns an iPhone, and another third owns a Blackberry device.
The 29 percent owned by Android breaks down like this: HTC devices running Android make up 12 percent, followed by Motorola handsets, which make up 10 percent of Android phones. Samsung falls in third place, with 5 percent. And then there’s 2 percent of “other.”
HTC devices running a Microsoft OS make up 7 percent of the smartphone market, the fourth largest single segment.
Nielsen also reports that Android is catching on most with the younger crowd, with 6 percent of those ages 18 to 24 opting for an Andoroid-based device, and 8 percent of the 25-34-year-old crowd doing so. That’s in minor contrast to 4 percent in the 18-24 bracket going for either an Apple or Blackberry device. (Apple is equal to Android in the 25 to 34 range. And RIM falls just slightly behind in that category, with 7 percent.)
Obviously, the gaps here are minimal, with the top three competing operating systems all taking about a third of the market. But this report does show that Android is still on the upswing, and is likely to remain so for some time

Well i should think that people buy blackberrys because they are cheap and for BBM.
Blackberrys ensnare businessess, it's as simple as that, the barstewards!
The outlay for licences means there's more incentive to stick with them and regular battery yanking, than throw that money away.
What I'm finding now is companies are looking at alternatives to run alongside BES, such as WM or android, or if owned by staff, iphones (thankfully none have been tempted to get everyone iphones).
We only ever get problems with the blackberrys, and only rarely is it down to the BES needing a reboot.
good news for me will always be the best Android, although I wondered at the beginning of the Windows Mobile ...
Nobody can resist the allure of the cute green fella! He's taking over the world.

When I first saw this thread, I thought to myself "Charlie Sheen has something to do with mobile OS platforms now?"
Anyhow, the logic of the article escapes me, especially the part about how RIM and Apple are bigger because they're the only ones making their own hardware. At that rate, Macs are more successful than Windows-running PCs because Apple is the only one making the hardware.
Is it just me, or does anyone else see the illogic here?
imagine if this tally had users that installed android on their phone as well!
They are still the leaders in the HW stats, since HTC is only a part of the Android world for example. Android gets divided to HTC, Samsung, LG, SE, etc.

HTC's Android handset only take up 12% of the US market, while iPhones take up all of the 27% iOS' share.

Why iPhone 4s sells to almost 2 million over the weekend?

How that happened? 2 million or 5 million? If that is true Android is way out of Apple's league.
dude.. it didn't sell about 2 million... iPhone 4S sold more than 4 million units in the first 3 days..

It's a functional device out of the box. The general population doesn't have the time to root and customize their device and flash ROMs. They don't care about "making it their own". They just want a fast and functional device without any tweaking.
It's a walled garden...sure...but most people don't care.
It sells 2 million in a weekend for many reasons. First. and foremost it has a large fan population, hence a population who are dedicated to the iOS. Two. the delaying of announcement has increased the fan base's anxiety and desire for the iPhone hence sudden burst in demand.
And why do Android users hate iPhone users? From the same reason you think iOS is the best. The same mindless people in both groups. It is the most narrow minded and uninformative statement which shows your level of knowledge and understanding of software or comparing things at hand.
No software is the best, best is dependent on the situation at hand. Yes they may have an advantage over another in certain areas, but it ends there, still a stalemate. You think i should get a cashier or a barcode scanner system for a lemonade stand because it offers the best management system on stock? No im wastingmoney on something I'm only doing today, get the point? f not I'll elaborate even more with my post below. Btw english does not seem to be your first language so I apologize if you cannot understand it.
Oki so now lets put iOS in the hands of someone who knows his way around UIs. Think he's gonna enjoy the simplicity iOS over the functionality of Android? Why not ask the forum if you can't think of the answer.
Now do you think a beginner computer user would prefer android? Judging from your perspective you'd say no, and I completely agree with you. A beginner would not even think of pressing a arrow pointing up or a three row and column square as the app drawer. All from my experience with my friends.
Get the point now?
Because they all are islaves man! There coming to get the rest of the world! Lol

To circumvent stupidity I'm just reposting the post I made in a similar thread.
Just because you're fanboys doesn't justify blindness... Unless you're blind fanboys and in that case why do you have a touch screen phone?
jokes aside, iPhone doesn't sell strictly by brand. It is a device who's hardware (not internals but aesthetics) are unrivaled aside from a tiny screen. The build quality is superb and doesn't feel like it was haphazardly glued together like HTC devices or like Mattel built them like Samsung devices. The only hardware company that rivaled iphone's build quality is Nokia and they're onboard with WP7. Next, the OS is infinitely more fluid than android. On average an android device on the UI runs around 22-27 fps where iOS is a steady 60 as far back as the 3gs. It's optimized for it's superb hardware and it shows. Next, fragmentation isn't an issue. I can play infinity blade on a 3gs just as well as a 4gs and 2 years in the real world is like a century in the tech world. Overall it is a higher quality product for gaming, media, and basic phone functions. If you only get your phones to mod then android is for you but for quality, WP7 or iOS.

who cares why they sold more. Who cares why they are considered best. Lets allow windows and and android to exist. I have my reasons for preferring android. but lets consider for a moment how many jobs These devices create. Lets also consider the choices the devices provide.
If the iphone and Ios are the best why doesnt every other maker give up. We really only need one phone right. Cases will make them look different and Apple can decide when we upgrade. Sounds like a great idea to me.

Just finished watching the Playstation Gamescom conference and when they got around to the Playstation Mobile segment I was pleasantly surprised to find that Sony has partnered with Asus to bring Playstation Mobile to Asus devices. Though with the Nexus 7 being the official Google tablet it only makes sense really. I look forward to playing Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Driver, Syphon Filter and MediEvil on my Nexus 7 in the future
It was also said that if you buy something on one device it will be available to ALL your PS certified devices, for anyone out there who has a Sony phone or a PS Vita or for some reason, one of those unfortunately horrible looking Sony tablets ><
Haha sounds awesome. Do you have a link where we could read more?
I wonder if it will apply to the Nexus 7 though. It's really a Google device manufactured by ASUS.
Would there be a benefit to this over a emulator?

The game would be likely optimized for our devices. I don't think tegra3 optimized, but updated for newer more powerful processors. So the same game should run better natively than on emulator. But FPse emulator with open gl plugin looks great.
Looking forward to this partnership. Almost positive this includes nexus 7 also. Since its made by Asus. Being partnered with Google doesn't negate that.

At least Sony were honest and upfront about it, yet the press still raped them over it. Nobody ever lost any money or details on the PSN hack, it all turned out to be blown out of all proportion. There was no CC fraud, Sony never stored CC numbers, and no rise in identity fraud was ever seen as a result of it.

( we all know the hidden agenda - American press pushing the American console).

Thank goodness I don't store my CC on Xbox as well. Security breaches happens all the time, thats not the point of this thread. I was just stating that I have not tried any of the games yet because I don't have one on file. I do see that PSN has redeem vouchers like Xbox, so I might get one so I could get some games.

Your view on bb10?

So blackberry 10 was just released. What are your thoughts on the z10 and the q10?
I think the z10 runs on a snapdragon s4 plus and has 2 gigs of ram with a 720p 4.2 inch display(355ppi). The q10 might have similar ram+processor but i think the screen has a smaller and obviously it wont have as many pixels.
It is definitely capable of competing with some new phones IMO. But that's not why i created this thread. I want to see your thoughts.

Correction: the Z10 runs on the OMAP 4470. The Q10 shares the same specs sans screen-estate.
I really don't like hardware-whores who are downplaying the Z10 purely based on the OMAP. Which is ironic seeing as how Google phones are a success because of their software. (with the exception being the Nexus 4).
The Z10 could be a success depending on how well they innovate in the OS. When I first heard that unlocking the screen could be as simple as double-tapping: I was impressed in the same way a small rock that ripples can become a large splash in constructive interference. The specs are basically mid-range at this point, but then again, so is the iPhone 4 too (and that has 512 RAM). Difference being that the iPhone 4 still performs as smoothly and gracefully for all its intents/purposes and its audience. I think the Z10 was designed with that kind of mindset. When a phone feels smooth enough, when the phone does everything you need it to do: maybe you but most people won't care what's under the screen.
We're seeing the move away from removable batteries, Micro-SD slots, and smaller screens. Personally, the direction the industry is going (as evident by the Nexus 4) dissuades people like me from upgrading. I don't need a huge-ass 4.7+ screen, I love the comfort and convenience of flash cards, and removable batteries, I definitely like the square-like aesthetics of the Z10 versus the general trend of bar-soaps.
While I'm not in a hurry to get a Z10, I will closely follow the news surrounding it. The BB10 OS is what will really make the Z10 shine but it's a double-edged sword if it subpar: much like the Windows Phones. But so far, feature-wise, I think the Z10 has its bases covered.
I like. Looks like a huge comeback for Blackberry.

word. I think Blackberry may be able to pull back some lost ground, but its lost out quite a bit in the past two years.
I will be picking up the Q10 in April.
@billydasco
I quite like the look of it actually but think they're behind the curve as everything else had made such big leaps

I don't think blackberry gives it's best to compete with the rivals...
With the lack of features like siri, Google now and some important applications...

Oh come on. The more competitors the better for the consumer.

It reminds me of Nokia with Meego with all the gestures and no buttons. Especially the lock screen.

Long live Meego and hardware keyboards! Tempted to say that "touch is a gimmick", but I think the reality is that hipsters will always exist.

BB was a wonderful device,
now it just looks like a modded version of android,
they should have focused more on business and government consumers rather than the mainstream market
BlackBerry Exchange Server, or BES costing $99 plus fees AND no compatibility with legacy devices is killer. BlackBerry should know better when there are other cheaper options out there. As for the OS, it still feels extremely business oriented which is a great thing. I own a Galaxy S III right now, but I would purchase a Z10 to have as my secondary business phone. It's the right size, the specs don't have to be spectacular as with older versions of the OS it's hardware integrated and it's styling is better than most Android devices out there. I think it will overtake Windows in terms of Market share but won't be as successful as Android or iOS devices.

New competitors are a good thing. Old ones trying to make a come back will just leave early adopters with unsupported devices. Anyone who really thinks rebranding and 2 mildly competitive flagship phones is enough to save RIM (now Blackberry) is delusional.

Totally agree.
What will happen to the BB curve my Dad owns?

Z10 is cool. Anything that helps kill the iPhone is fine with me.

I mostly agree with u, but something deep down tells me that the new BBos will be relatively successful, at least enough to keep the brand alive or even more.
