Question about changing kernel on stock ICS - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Helo, ok so it is time to root my sgn, but if I am not mistaken I should change kernel as well. So what I need to do is root my phone, and install kernel(example Notecore ICS Kernel) with the stock CWM or PC Odin...right?

You do not have to flash kernel to root, but yes for installing cwm recovery you have to.
Check this out- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360

Just root ur phone using fast direct method from dr.ketan thread, then flash any safe kernel like speedmod or notecore using mobile odin.no need for pc if u like, u will be done in just two steps as i mentioned.

The hassle free method to rooting and getting the ClockWorkMod custom recovery on a stock Ice Cream Sandwich firmware is, by flashing a safe Ice Cream Sandwich kernel such as GL Notecore via PC ODIN and then downloading the app, Triangle Away from the Google Play Store to get rid of the yellow triangle.

TnX guys I will do it.
Cheers

Ok so I successfully root my SGN and after that I installed Notecore kernel without issues, then I remove yellow triangle(reset the counter) all done without problems. Now I have two more questions if you do not mind. Is it safe now if necessary do wipedata/factory default via CWM, and if it is will I loose root and custom kernel?
TnX again

Yes it is safe to wipe via cwm,or via settings now,and no u will not lose root.

you say that your device is still rooted, so first of all you must buy mobile odin on the play store, then you can download the kernel here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784 and flash it with mobile odin

You can flash CF Root with Odin on your pc but that will increase the flash counter and show a yellow triangle when booting. Or as Vampireblood above already stated buy Mobile Odin Pro from the playstore and flash it with that app.

Then flash firmware, select wipe cache.
Done
How do i know i have install CF Root? I follow chainfire's instructions using already rooted.bat to install CF root fpr my LP9 Kernel. But after everything done, i go Setting, About Phone, my Kernel is still the old 1!
Worse is now i wann open CWM, after clicking on it, it opens & hang on a black screen... Mobile Odin Pro when open on screen keeps showing Loading... Checking SuperUser support, & it stays on that screen... Dunno what happen man...

Phone hangs on boot - haven't flashed

I recently bought a galaxy note GT-N7000. I upgraded to ICS and rooted it right after, following this guide: http://rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-no...on-galaxy-note-gt-n7000-no-computer-required/
It has worked perfectly for 2 weeks now, but when I used it today, it just froze while using the music player, so I turned it off, and when I turn it back on it just hangs on the Samsung logo on boot.
I have tried pulling out the battery, and I have also tried to reboot from CWM, but no luck..
Is there anyone who know what to do?
Thank you
U tried to flash ICS stock rom from odin pc?, u may also flash the stock GB rom then do a full wipe (WIPE ONLY FROM GB ROM NEVER FROM ICS ) then proceed for a clean ICS install using pc odin too..

Okay perfect.. for some reason my computer doesnt recognize the note.. I have tried reinstalling KIES and all the drivers but didnt help..
I tried on another PC aswel and it didnt work either.
It failed when trying to install the samsung MPT something driver..
Completely uninstall kies, then install stand alone drivers from ketan post, u dont need kies for this, only odin is needed, also use main usb ports..no extensions or hubs.

I appreciate you helping me out here.
So I uninstalled KIES and installed the 64bit version of the USB drivers.
I plugged my phone's USB in the back of the computer.
The phone's screen turns on with the battery indicator and all that, but the computer says: "USB device not recognized" One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"..
Okay apparently I have to turn it on where it hangs on the samsung logo.
So now it's trying to install the drivers, and this is what turns out:

Best way to go from Stock Unlocked GB to rooted ICS.... safely?

All right,
have just purchased a GB 2.3.6 while in Singapore for my wife.
Coming from a rooted ICS Galaxy S2. So I can back everything up with TB and move over. (data only... will install apps thru the market)
However, this whole EMMC thing is making me a bit nervous.
A couple ways that I can see about going about this.
Put rooted old version of GB on now, so I can have rooted Note, with CWM. Then Flash an ICS ROM and then a Safe Kernel.
Although, almost all kernel directions say to have an ICS ROM first, and almost all ICS ROMs say to have a safe ICS kernel first, so this is where I get confused about doing the GB root thing, as it seems counter-intuitive which to flash first!
OR
Do the OTA update, and then put on safe Kernel. (but if I understand this correctly, I will be in a position where an unsafe Kernel is now on the phone, as it will be the stock OTA, which I think I want to avoid)
My wife has of course, already moved over things that are on the Note, that I would want to back up first.
If I do the old version of GB first, will I still be able to run TB to grab stuff off of the Note now, and then move back over along with TB from S2?
before all this EMMC stuff... I was busy flashing away... now... agh!
Anyway, thanks for any information on bestest/safest route to go.
Ross
Simple way would be update to stock ICS (using ota or Odin),flash odin hydracore kernel with ODIN and you will get root with cwm.
Note1: Do not factory reset or do anything when in stock ICS.You can do after flashing hydracore kernel.
Note2:You could use triangleaway to reset custom binary counter and triangle.

So, if do the OTA... does my wife lose any data? Can Root with Hydracore and then use TB, then do a full wipe... and should be safe?

It may do a factory reset when updating through OTA.I haven't updated using OTA nor kies as I always stayed with custom rom.
Yeah after flashing hydracore, you will be safe.

1.it is better to make full reset from GB 2.3.6 stock rom for a clean ICS install
2.use kies or OTA or even download ur stock ics rom and flash it using pc odin
3.dont make any wipes on ICS stock rom
4.root ur note using stock recovery zip method as instructed in dr.ketan thread,u will have root +no triangle at all
5.install mobile odin and flash hydracore safe kernel or speedmod.
6.now ur safe with root and cwm and no triangle, enjoy..
↖(^▽^)↗ Sent from Rego Galaxy Note ↖(^▽^)↗
So, do full factory reset prior to doing the OTA? (While on 2.3.6?) Then continue with 2 through 6?

Thanks
Thanks to all... ended up rooting with Older-pre-rooted GB method first via PC Odin, so I could back up her data using GB. (not too much stuff... but wanted to make it easy for that)
This did give me the keyboard NULL error, but overcome using pre-installed swype.
Then tried OTA udate... can't with that rooted ROM.
So wiped all and installed Thai ICS Stock Rom via PC Odin
Then Did unlock via RootSuperSU and added busybox.
Could not figure out how to get CWM on without getting a triangle, so put on Hydracore with PC Odin, then installed Triangle Away, worked like a charm.
Then put back on TB, and restored her data.
Again... safely rooted and on Stock ICS ROM with Safe Kernel... not sure if wife will want any "goochie features" of other ROM's, but man, is that Screen just not the bomb!??! (and I use an S3!)
(waiting for official JB now for the S3, and if it comes to the Note, at least I know how to go about it smoothly for the next upgrade!)
Ross
Congratulations man.

First you need to know Hydracore is not supported on GB roms. Its for ICS/CM10/CM9/AOKP/AOSP/JB Roms.
Second what method you followed to downgrade.
Just do this.
If you have Mobile Odin :-
Download GB Rom From my Signature (PreRooted GB Rom)
Extract it on your phone.(Any Location)
Open it.
Select Rom file under Open .tar tab
Start Flashing.
Click Continue to complete the operation. Your phone will reboot to special mode and flash the rom. Done.
If you want to use PC Odin
Download GB Rom From my Signature (PreRooted GB Rom)
Open PC Odin on your PC.
Put your phone in download mode.
Connect it to PC using USB cable.
Select GB Rom file under PDA tab.
Click Start. (Do not change any options).
Wait for completion.
Your phone will reboot after success full flashing. If your phone doesn't starts or stuck at bootscreen after flashing then Go to Recovery by pressing Vol Up+Home+Power key and wipe Cache/Data and reboot.
Hope it helps

[Q] Extremly Confused. Uprade from GB to ICS

My friend asked me to root his Galaxy Note and I am afraid to hardbrick it. I read many threads regarding the processes involved.
He is running unrooted GB 2.3.6 with Kernel JPKK2. I want to upgrade to either Allaince or Criskelo.
If I'm not mistaken, here are the steps just to be sure. Please someone tell me if I'm missing something:
1. Root using post 2 / part 2 with kernel KK2 here.
2. Flash ICS repack by chainfire using mobile ODIN (I read that it is not necessary anymore. Is that true? Can I skip it? If yes, should I flash the new ROM using ODIN or recovery from step 1? I don't want to increase the binary counter.)
3. Reboot to recovery and wipe data/ cache/ dalvik
4. Flash the new ROM and wipe cache / dalvik again
I also read that I shouldn't change the kernel and keep it CF-Root. But Alliance has Ficetos NoteCore ICS 1.0 and Criskelo CF-Root LRG.
Can I use CWM that comes after rooting in part 1 to Nandroid backup the GB room? Same question for the new ROM (backup using the recovery of the specific ROM).
If I'm not mistaken, somewhere, someone said that CWM should not be used to do anything other that flash firmware or it will hardbrick the phone.
That's why I'm confused.
Thank god I own a Samsung Galaxy S2. I can flash anything I want.
