Hey, I wanted to know if there was a tutorial for updating my droid 4. I couldn't find one on the internet. The problem is that when I go to do a "Software update" [Update to the new ICS] it fails. My phone restarts and goes to the update-dios-thing but 1/2 way into it the logo on my screen changes, my phone starts, and when I unlock my phone it says "Software update failed". Does anyone have a fix? I'd love to hear back! Thanks for reading this!
I would suggest to flash 4.0.4 fastboot files. it's the cleanest way. And wipe all is a recommendation.
My Droid 4 does this also. I got the phone the day it released and rooted it 2 days later. Everything has been fine since then except for getting an update for 6.13.219.en.US a couple of months ago. It constantly fails so I've been ignoring it. But now ICS is out I need to get this figured out. Instructions on flashing the fastboot files? I'm decent with computers but n00b on this kind of stuff.

I have an update pending resolution of this issue as well. 6.16.217? Just came through a few days ago. Tried temp unroot with voodoo rootkeeper, then unfreeze all apps, then update. This failed. Haven't had much time to try much else.

Thoughts
I have had the same issues after rooting and running safestrap. One thing to check is to re-enable root if you simply disabled it through ota rootkeeper or something similar. Then download a root file explorer such as root browser lite. Go to cache/recovery/log or last log. Open as a text file and scroll to the bottom. The offending app or issue will be listed. Either unfreeze it, or try to find a replacement. Good luck!
I can't get root back ever since I updated to ICS. Cnat figure how to root it again. Root fails every time. Does anybody know what I need to do in order to root properly.
Thanks,
John

I have a rooted NC with stock 1.1 firmware. Im just wondering what's gonna happen when the 1.2 update comes down? Will have to re-root it? If I do then I guess we'll have to wait until someone figures it out and produces a new boot image right? If so then I might not update until that's figured out.

If you don't do anything, it will update and break root and you will have to wait till that is rooted, HOWEVER! There are tutorials out there that have step-by-step on how to disable the updater, if that's what you want.
If I disable the updater, is it simple to re-enable later when the new rooting process has been figured out?
I would like to know also. Since the new update is supposed to come out by the end of the month I just thought I would keep WiFi off at all times until I researched the best solution.

Will 3rd party Apps you've purchased still be present on the device and usable?
Apparently, you just have to rename /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip to /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.bak
Some people seem to have still gotten updates after renaming though. It's a little vague and some of the info might be outdated. This could potentially throw a wrench in a lot of people's tablets.
Your purchased apps are stored by google. Yes they will still be there. I actually had purchased items from my phone show up on my book...quick download and good to go.
Now, after an update, you may lose them until it's rooted again...

yeah, if you let the update go through, I can almost say for sure you'll lose access to the apps until you root again and probably redownload them)
To be safe get "Titanium Backup" and Purchase it's ProKey from the Market. Using it you can Batch Backup your Apps and App Data. Then if anything happens you can always Recover your Apps. (Batch Restore needs Pro Key)
For help using Titanium Backup read this Lifehacker article:

Just did the software update today and it all went smooth after unfreezing all original apps I had originally froze with TiBu. I noticed that I lost root after the update, which I thought was no big deal until I tried to re-root. I tried the ADB method, SuperOneClick, and also thecubed's way with no success. Don't know if it is just me or if lg/verizon changed something in the update. When doing the ADB method I am stuck at pushing rageagainstthecage. I get the "Permission failed to copy..." message, but doing "adb usb" and "adb root" no longer fixes this. Also, "adb root" shows "adbd cannot run as root in production builds". Anyone else having trouble after the new software update?
I lost root, too. I've only been able to try SuperOneClick so far, but I haven't been able to get root back yet either.

I am on the same boat...
I cant root either with SuperOneClick version 1.7 or 1.9.5
Am going to try with the latest and greatest version today
Yeah, I'd suggest no one update if they want to keep root. I've seen this on my last phone (Eris) and it took the devs literally months to figure it out.

I have tried the newest version of SuperOneClick and it does not work either. Hopefully someone will figure this out soon as I really miss having root.
Daaaamn that sucks y'all. **** could be months before ifs fixed depending on how secure they made it.

i never did the update, but have you tried the gingerbreak app?

Interesting note is that after the update, my inductive charging stopped working properly on the rooted phone. It was working fine prior to the update. I have two phones, one rooted one not. It would state that I have removed my phone off the charging pad as the phone is sitting there on the charge pad. the pad states that it is still in charging mode but all charging stopped on the phone. I also notice that the USB port is behaving strangely too. Unrooted the LG but it still behave the same from the update. I haven't been able to root it again yet.
Yup Software Update Loses Root and R/W File System
I restored back down to v4 (from the v6 update), wiped the phone. And still cant mount the File System as R/W
Tried Super One Click 2.2.1, Z4 1.3.0 both failed for the same reason (both exploits)
Super User and Root Explorer both crash whenever they try to remount the File System.
If anyone finds a way to unlock, let me know.
I am personally gonna put back v6 for now, but i dont like feel inhibited.

My USB was acting strangely too, until I lost it totally (as posted in another thread). I used to be able to do an extended battery pull and it would come back...now nothing. I hope this isn't happening to yours too.
I backed up my data then did a hard reset. The USB restarted again. I noticed a few apps that VZN has triggers this so I testing it from that point. Those apps shouldn't/ didn't affect the USB prior to the update.
So http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1211295 explains how to downgrade after the update to then root, but since this has been figured out has all progress on developing a way to root the phone after the update stopped? I still like some of the features with the stock rom after the update and am wondering if anyone is working on a new exploit still, or if downgrading is the only fix on the horizon?

Oh snap

root
Wish I could root, got my phone when the update was already on it
So I know being rooted and receiving OTAs isn't a problem, but I've read that having frozen apps can be. What happens if I/we get an OTA and an app is frozen? Does it fail gracefully or will I have a nice shiny paperweight as a result?Could we freeze/disable the update app/service until they push one out and we're ready for it?
Most likely the phone will reboot to do the update but will fail during the file system check. Your phone will then boot again and a message will pop up telling you the update has failed.
This is what happened with my D2. I would expect the same to apply to the D3.
Yes, your phone will refuse to take the update.
Nice. Sounds like it fails pretty gracefully.
Let's say your rooted but did not freeze or do anything at all will you still get a update. I've herd yes you can and no you can't. I can understand if you have froze or deleted things that you wont but if you didn't do a single thing except root that you might be able to get an update?
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App
If you're rooted but have not frozen / deleted anything you will get the update and likely lose your root.
Getting the update to install successfully depends on what you have frozen vs. What the update tries to update. If you freeze something it wants to update, it will fail.
Root itself doesn't play a part in this.

So having the update fail because of required frozen apps may be a good thing! It will prevent unroot and prevent a fix to the root exploit on your phone.. giving you time to come back to the forum and check for other users experience.. i love XDA...
I definitely want an update when one comes out to fix the camera a the cell standby. I have froze stuff but I will unfreeze them when an update comes out. But nice to know that I don't have to do any weird stuff to take an update. Now will we be able to root again.

Honestly, it's best to just wait. The update might patch root exploits and be very hard to root. If you wait just a little bit, then the devs will release a rooted and flashable update. Well, when we have recovery, that is. But recovery shouldn't be too far off.
If fixing the camera and cell standby is more important than root, then you should proceed with the update. If you want to keep your root, do not update quite yet, as GoogleAndroid said. It just might patch the exploit.
I would like to have non blue pics that would be nice. My phone ran really good before I froze stuff its a bit faster now so I would take the update and im sure someone will root that if not im still a happy droid 3 owner.

I took the JB OTA update. Which works great except the phone wont allow me to access my dialpad mid-call sometimes...weird. Anyway, I used Voodoo OTA Root keeper and took the update and restored...all check marks there, but no root. So i decided to wait for an exploit for a lil while and then i got my wish! Which using ubuntu and the terminal and not windows seemed easier to me so i set it up.
Did all the steps and it worked! or so i thought...phone vibrated and came back on with the superuser apk etc. Check with root checker...no root. Not sure where my conflict is coming from now? Not sure if I should Fxz JB 4.1.2 or what, I've been reading some things on that thread, different problems people have had seemingly with the firmware. I didn't think it should matter as far as rooting the phone goes, but one person was saying that using it would stop the exploit from working? Never thought that would be the case, am i missing something?
Also, my phone after i tried both of these keeps asking me to update my superuser binary. First with one superuser app and now with the one that was with the exploit package and i can't seem to do it. Feel like i'm missing something simple here but i'm not sure what it is?
Did you wait for the vibrations and then press a hardware button, like vol up or dn? Others have reported having to go through the exploit more than once to get it rooted. Give it another try. I was able to get root on the second try, but I royally messed up the process the first time.
Embarrassing, but no I forgot the hardware button. Worked like a champ second time lol my advice don't do this late when your not awake, follow all the steps!

So 5.1.1 for the att Samsung galaxy s6 has finally been released! Now I do hope the memory leak issue will get addressed in this build, but I am wondering if we should avoid updating to it if we are rooted? I wonder how long it will take for our custom roms to update to this.

Well I hope someone puts up a .tar file for us to flash this instead of relying on the OTA. I jut do not like OTA updates. Something always seems to go wrong
Never had a issue when plugged in with wifi. Never DL walking around and still using phone. That is why everyone has a problem. Not sure if your case but throwing it out there.

Yeah even wifi. I changed the date multiple times still nothing. Just depressing. I bought the device straight out so the locked bootloader is sad enough but making the updates ota only is just crazy.

Unfortunately S6 active isn't mentioned anywhere
Hope that the update comes out for s6 active soon and someone provide with a .tar file flashing with Odin
Been trying to update my wife's phone since last night and everytime it says that the update failed. I have tried 3 times and no luck.
Enable all the apps you previously disabled. Set the time forward and try again.

Settings -> Applications -> Disabled
Installing now - let's see how bad AT&T cocked up the update.
I have no apps disabled, non rooted, and still am getting install failed.
I did uninstall some apps when I first got the phone. Could that be causing the failed update?
Successfully updated to 5.1.1.. Seems a bit smoother but other than that, nothing big..checked if they added any sort of shutter control..nope

Has anyone tried to run older root methods yet to see if anything works? Sometimes with new OTAs, previous exploits are overlooked.

The memory management is sooo much better. Flipboard stays open on all day now
I think Ive seen it somewhere but cant seem to find it. Is there a wayto unroot or flash din files to take the 5.1.1 update. I am currently rooted and used flash fire to get to OF3. Can I just odin the oe2 files and take the update?
Does it have better performance than one of those ultra lite rom's? I am considering of getting off of my custom rom so I can take this update.
