Pro Tip #1: Don't tell them you like ponies.
Obviously it depends on the job, but when I was in HR, we expected candidates to look and act professionally. Business formal is almost always better than business casual if you are unsure about dress. They should know about our company. The worst thing is having a candidate that doesn't even know the job tasks or our mission statement (it's on our website). Be prepared to answer any questions about your field. If they ask you something that throws you off, don't show it. Answer the best way you can. There's so much more but good luck, you'll do fine.

well,
i have plenty for you,
since my major is in human resource dev't planning and management,
1.) look the interviewer in the eye (shows you're not *****)
2.) prepare a well organized and preferably a 2-page resume since it will be easier for the interviewer to look at information about you, and keep your resume not too detailed and not too broad,
3.) say no to things you can't do or don't know how, but be sure to have a alternative statement to patch up those you can't do (makes you a lot more "sellable")
4.) analyze his questions and if you don't know the answer apply the conversational technique called as "steering",
5.) Try to be honest as much as possible but a little lie wont hurt, just make sure to have some concrete facts to add to the backbone of your statements,
good luck bro
Just walk in and say "where should I park?"
Just like the guy in the movie Clueless.

i think DK is in his old enough to realize that
Here you go
1. Go for the interview riding a stick with a pony's head (like they did in old movies)
2. ALWAYS carry a potato in your pocket for that awesome moment when u can't answer something and you just say "potato" with a flourish
3. Make yourself an xda membership card. This forum does "magical" stuff
4. Before the interviewer asks you anything, ask him which ROM he's running - and if he doesnt know about rooting, do a Facepalm
5. Say you know chuck Norris. They'll plead with you to take the job
You're welcome. Just PayPal me your salary for the first three years of employment

I would change #2 a bit. When the interviewer asks you something you don't have a convincing answer for, you reach into your pocket, take out the potato and put it on the desk and say "Does that do anything for you?". It will show that you are prepared for anything.

my two cents on everything is simple.
before we got the first port of 2.1-dec 09, thanks to flipz. there was NO DRAMA. it was all development.
i know i joined in january but i watched everyone and everything. there were never any developers leaving because someone posted warez, or people pointing fingers at someone. or even someone degrading mods.
mods are mods for a reason. they use their power to keep pointless **** from starting up. this thread needs to close. XDA is for development/help of phones. not to degrade people. we are on the internet. we dont know eachother personally. which is how it needs to be.
so please keep these issues to a minimal. we finally get our own general and dev threads and its being shot to hell.
as for the op's questions. alot of the bans are a week to a month. there was obviously a reason. its no ones business except neb and the mods.
no offense to anyone. i just want issues to be DROPPED and lets continue to help and develop.
Its a real shame to see a great forum ruined by censorship. I belong to several dozen forums covering things from pc components, to video games, car forums to home improvement and on and on and never have I seen a forum so poorly handled. You let people openly admit to criminal activity and actually encourage it, while on the other hand, you ban people for standing up to them and calling them out. You play favorites by banning people you don't like and letting your "pals" do what they want. Worst of all, now you delete threads for no legitimate reason other than not liking it or not agreeing with it. This forum wasn't great before the "organization", but now its turning into something even worse. Maybe you guys are having a bad day, I don't know, but I hope you get your act together and go back to doing what your supposed to do, that is moderate, not police and censor.
Have a good night and thanks to the devs and their hard work................
its all good

Just kinda thinking out loud here (not the best thing to do but oh well!) Wouldn't it be nice to have an XDATV show about some off the apps that come from XDA? (SetCPU ect)
Or just an XDATV show dedicated to app reivews, Like SassiBob's segment but as a full show?
As I said, just thinking out loud
yeah we have chad for roms
sassy for apps
harry (lol) for a mix of quick stuff - maybe too quick
az - general xda news and other mix
that other blonde guy for interviews....
kinda need to find a set topic for each show... almost there....
would be nice to have a Q&A live, or a how-to ( mobile tech videos - bend over and take it with him xda. he is a good resource! )
another show for games...?

Ohh I love the idea of a How-to video! That would go down well with the people who are not as tech savy as the rest of us Not sure about a live Q&A though, that would depend on having a big crowd that interacts & I have a feeling that with XDATV in such a young age it would fail to attract the crowds needed. But I think maybe a top5 show? Like top5 Apps or Top5 Roms?
An XDATV Games show?! Only if we can dress the Android dude up as Mr Chip! XD haha
Maybe this is silly.... But, what if an episode was dedicated to some "issues" (like OEMS locking the bootloader, developer's thoughts on fragmentation, the suit, between Google and Oracle and it's effect on Android and the Linux kernel....)?

okay okay..well....
XDA Developers forum users are way too damn pretentious and immature in order to host a live Q and A - well said, guy who said that above me. XDA is too young to have that kind of crowd.

I had an idea on a show for how-to videos as well. I'd love to do some!
I don't have a smartphone atm to do any so I guess thats a no
I do however follow HTC news like a puppy dog, so maybe I could do some videos on HTC news? I'm talking ALL news. ROMs, Phone rumors, new releases, OEM firmware updates. I'd love a chance!
My idea for How-To videos was that there would be no set host, but anyone who wants to make a how-to video for noobs could do it. The videos would specifically show from factory to rooting and installing any given ROM on every device xda supports. The footage would be sent to me and I'd edit it to make it as short as possible without leaving anything out, and then it would be uploaded to xda's Youtube channel. If any of you are uncomfortable with speaking or being seen, that's fine, I can do the voice-over. Like I said, going from unboxed to flash-ready as fast as possible is all you'd need to do. Then each of these videos could be placed in each forum's noob sticky.

Man, I'd do it. You, me, and Bob. Put it up on streamly.tv and we're set. Having a live show in general would be fun to do. Sure, I might answer a few questions with "I don't know, go away," but that's why I'd just be hosting it. We'd have guests that came on each week to answer questions. And I'd just smack any pretension that peeked out. Or Bob would. Yeah, Bob would. Plus, there's nobody better than her at keeping things stu...non-pretentious.

My only concern with covering news from outside xda is that its outside xda. I'm by no means a decision maker here, so press on and see how far it goes. I'm sure with a live show we'd be covering general news for a want of content. But we don't embrace a brand as a community, we develop on a large number of devices from a wide array of carriers.

Yeah that make sense.
anyway I posted it here so..
In my experience as a software developer I usually start with what would be useful to me that isn't exactly available yet. This way I would be motivated to do it. More like putting a user's hat, think of what you need and then putting your dev hat to create it. It's difficult for others to decide for you.

For my first "real" app, beyond book tutorials, I made a database to store my internship hours and activities. At first it was simple and I had to type in all the fields. Then I expanded it to allow for drop down lists, radio and check box selection and date picker type things. After that I learned how to export my database into both a comma delimited CSV and Excel format. After that I went a step further to allow that information to be uploaded to Dropbox as well as backup the database to Dropbox and the SD card. Lastly, I learned how to let me send the spreadsheets to apps like e-mail and Printershare so I could print straight from the device. Its ugly as hell, but I might clean it up, make it look pretty, and sell it on the Play store if I get time. Currently people in my field have two choices...pen and paper, or a reasonably priced but ultimately pain in the arse online website that charges like $60 a year and we need to track this info for 3-4 years.
So, in other words...as someone else noted...figure out something you need or could use and work on it. If you can do like I did and find something useful for your field, all the better because you could make some money off of it.
One app I would like to see is a decent invoice program that would allow me to store my invoices, backup my database, print invoices to wireless or cloud printers (even using 3rd party stuff like my app does) and have it not cost stupid amounts of money like most of the decent invoicing apps on the market now. I could probably figure it out, but the above app took me over a year of casual programming to figure out...but I work in the medical field...not a developer.

So if I say "Wow, you must really be dumb, huh?" Which is also sarcastic, that's OK? It's not rude? I'm just checking because you are, obviously, saying that all things sarcastic are not rude...making you some kind of expert, right? Wait, that's not rude either because its sarcastic! I'm going to love this, because now I can put down or talk down to anyone, as long as I do it sarcastically, and not be considered rude, condescending, or an ass! Awesome!
Listen, rude by any other name is still rude and by the OP's response it is easy to see he was offended. I would be as well. Perhaps you are comfortable being told to use Google every time you ask a question, but some people prefer talking about things. Maybe hearing about stuff directly from those who have experience with it, etc. Oh, and please, before you respond, don't even go down the road of how the OP could have asked this or said something that way or another. That's just semantic bullsh¡t and I have no desire to hear it.

Nah, not a bother. I don't think you need to be am expert. Hell, I learned what I did while in graduate school (nothing computer related), while working full time and raising a newborn baby. I started with two books...Android Programming for Dummies and Android Development is 24 Hours. Those two books alone gave me the basics I needed to do everything and I would guess if you really sat down and worked it, you could chew through them in a few weeks. I was doing about a chapter every 1-2 weeks and had to reread a lot because I would forget things between reading and practice. At your age it probably wouldn't be the same experience. At 42 I've already started the natural cognitive decline that makes learning new and not familiar material more difficult on top of being incredibly busy. LOL

LOL

My question. In the field of computer programming at this stage is it worth the 2 year investment of time and money to get a degree in computer programming? I'm 28 married with 4 kids. Is it a good possible career choice? I know its mostly dependent on whether you care enough to be good at it. Or is it a field that is flooded with new talent making it not so much worth it unless it been your passion since you were in your teens?

I think he was answering the short one.
Short answer for a short question. Lol.
But seriously. The job market is saturated with programmers and unless you have some programming experience it will be difficult. Also, if you still want to do it then pick up some text books and read it yourself. I can send you a C++ and a Java book in pdf. The ones I'm using this semester.

The PDFs would be great. Pm me for email. Though I don't known if a saturated market now with as many people out of work as there are will necessarily be so saturated in 2 year. I personally don't think that the american economy is ready to quit nor is the american spirit of in general. Sorry I know I said short question and turned it into a much longer question. I do enjoy messing around with the smart phones. I'm learning quite a bit. I appreciate the responses. I do think I'm going to go for it in the winter quarter.

If you're only in it for the money you won't go far. If computers/programming is something you're passionate about there's no limit to what you can do. People who love what they do are always successful compared to people only in it for the money because when they love what they do it becomes apparent in their work.
So would it be a bad idea for me to go into computer science when I go to college in 4 years?

Like I said, it depends on why you're doing it. If it's for the money your time might be better spent on a different major, but if you genuinely are doing it out of a love for computers you won't regret it.

I don't know that I can agree with that. While someone who has a true passion for something can be better than someone that doesn't would you really feel comfortable with a complete moron with a passion for cars to do your brakes? Its a simple enough system but should a step be missed the consequences could be deadly. Think about the mechanics from the Jim Carey movie the mask. for anyone to make a career of something over a hobby the major motivator is undoubtedly money. No matter the passion for you'll find very few people who would work on a strangers car for free. Me personally I am very passionate about cars. I enjoy restoring them, modifying them, adding that custom touch to make it stand out. Would i make a career of it? No I found after years in the industry I much prefer it as a hobby. Even though I have made insane money selling cars that I've restored or even my 10 second street legal camaro. I have a closet full of trophies from the 71 super Beatle restoration project I did in high school and spent a year and a half trailering to shows. I've also started at a restaurant as a bus boy and worked to general manager with no passion for the food service industry. Passion does not guarantee success. Unless that passion is placed in making g yourself the best you can possibly be at anything you do.

This thread is called "short question", not "short answer".
I am going for my job interview tomorrow to a store comparable or better than Best Buy. I am applying for product specialist and I was wondering for some tips. I will have my resume with me there, of course. I'll elaborate on this topic, and I'll add more to this post later

Look your best:
Haircut
Formal as appropriate look like you are ready to do the job you are interviewing for (without dressing down)
Phone in your pocket...don't even be seen looking at your phone at all
Courteous "please and thank you" go a long way
Introduce yourself
Say only what is relevant to the position don't go on about past accomplishments
Have a pen and note paper handy
Look the interviewer in the eye when speaking to them
Lighthearted humor can be used when the interview is winding down if interviewer is friendly (your call some people are tough to read)
Above all show confidence with respect
Just a few tips from an old interviewer (me)
These are a few things I always appreciated when I talked with people wanting a position in my work area.
Best of luck there...
Turn up early don't have bad breath
With all behavioural questions make the answer about you what you can do.
Talk about past accomplishments!! That is how you demonstrate what you have done and therefore what you can bring to the table. But always focus on your party in achievements. What you did not your colleagues (otherwise they will want to interview them).
Strong hand shake
Eye contact
Have a bottle of water to cure dry mouth
Research role and company
Always have questions.
Close the interview!! Important!!! "do you have any reservations about employing me"
Have an answer in case they do

as a human resource development and management graduate,
all i can say is that you should just be confident and learn what you are going to say,
anything on your resume can be used against you so be prepared on all aspects,
know the job, company and environment,
do SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities, traits) assessment prior to engaging in an interview,
tell them you like bacon.
Just be confident, be friendly, punctual and ready to admit your mistakes.
It goes without saying, don't lie about anything. But always remember the difference between lies and the incomplete truth.
Be formally dressed and use a cologne or deo in moderate quantities. Some people favor clean shaven interviewees. So you might wanna do that.
If you do only one thing, regardless of anything else, it'll at least double your chances.
Don't look confident.
BE confident.
BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, so that you can inspire the interviewer to believe in you.
Thanks for everything guys! Really appreciate it,! Will be going there in about an hour
