Hello,
Sorry for the general question, but I couldn't find the answer: Is an unlocked bootloader needed to have custom roms ?
I've seen a video of a guy using CM10 on his P880 and I'd like to know how he managed to install it on his device since it seems that the locked bootloader is an issue.
(Nb: I'm not asking that because I want that CM10 alpha on my phone. I get it is a simple proof of concept. But I'd like to know if technically every P880 phone can recieve custom ROMs such as the one shown in that video)
Thanks !

1) I really hope so, if not by Motorola then perhaps working out a way our selves (sadly looking less likely as time goes on)
2) the big thing we could do is load a custom kernel, so we could sort out the restart errors, also enable swap memory so we can have virtual RAM so ROMS like HTC Sence would run with far less lag. Plus many other kernel mods that other phones have
Thanka for the explanation, i have been reading here that maybe with Atrix bootloader we would be able somehow free our own bootloader (milestone) is it any true?

Well it is my hope that this is true ( i was the one that started the topic in the development forum) but until some of the developers get a look at the stuff we can not be sure, but even if it dosnt right away it might atleast help us free our own bootloader
OK thanks
Hi, I was looking into rooting my phone and I would like to ask a few questions, which I would guess have been asked before...
1. Do some roms come pre-rooted?
2. Do custom roms support OTA updates?
3. How do I unlock my nexus by unlocking the bootloader, and use the stock rom?
ATM I am on 2.3.4 + Locked bootloader, plz help, as I dont really understand a lot of the tutorials on the internet + a lot of them are old

Hi Developers and guys.
I have seen bootmanager android from which we can flash up to 5 custom roms on our sd card without touching our phone actual rom,
i have mailed the developers of bootmanager to include our 2X in there supported device, but got a reply from them " The lg phone doesnt give us access to the parts of the phone we need to edit to make the app work ",
i think they want to unlock the boot loader, but they not get any success in it,
so my question is to the great developers and programmers can we make a similar app for our lovely 2X, or can we unlock the boot loader for them....
Wrong section sir, you should post it to Q&A threads.

The o2x bootloader is already unlocked. LG devices are unloacked by default.

I know but if i posted it in Q&A threads no one will reply to it, my concern is to ask developers to make a similar app for our phone so we can also have dual boot phone, while having custom GB 2.3 we can test and try ICS with out flashing directly to our phone, as u know ics is still buggy and with out H/W acceleration.
Im sure that they are having issues in bootloader to search and boot the rom from sd card, i think rusty the maker of cwm may help us in this...
Maker of CWM? That's Koush not me. Nothing I can do I'm afraid.

Whilst it's a nice idea, I've never really understood the need for dual (or more) boot on a phone, a nandroid takes about 3minutes to restore?

Its not a thing as i also know that after playing with roms i can restore nandroid, but actually what im trying to say is that if we can dualboot our phone then we can have stable and daily use rom in our phone, and we flash any nighty or beta builds on our sd card with out disturbing our actual stable rom, just reboot your phone to go in to the stable daily use rom.

As already mentioned in this thread, you can message them back and tell them that there are no restrictions whatsoever. The bootloader is unlocked, hell you can even change partition sizes with NVFlash.

That's a) not true and b) no reason. dev section doesn't mean that everything development related goes in here but that this is for posts from developers who have created "it". Thus I asked a mod to move the thread to the right section.
By the way: With Rusty and me two RCs are regularly reading the Q&A section, and lots of other really capable people are as well.
Regarding the dual boot: Several people had tried it but it didn't work (yet).
Modding the bootloader and including a bootmenu is probably pretty tricky and time consuming.
I don't really see a reason for dual boot anyways, you cannt use the same data folder on combinations like Stock/CM9. The amount of time to make dualboot happen on the 2x is better spent on other things, in my opinion.
Sony has said that installing bootloader in the Xperia Z1 will disable the camera, but I've read that if you recover the TA, the camera works again. Is this true? If so, could I install different kernel ROMs (like CM) with a working camera?
I'm sorry if the question sounds dumb, I'm new to Android.

Firstly, you don't "install" the bootloader, every phone has one, you just unlock it to get access to it.
Secondly, you can restore the TA but that RELOCKS the bootloader so you cant use custom kernels.
Trust me, when this issue is sorted it will be big news so you will get to know it.
Currently this is the situation
locked bootloader = stock kernels = working camera
Unlocked bootloader = stock or custom kernels = NO CAMERA
No question is dumb if you don't know the answer, but please get used to searching before asking, that way you definitely wont ask any dumb questions
Thanks!
But the only ROM with the stock kernel is HONAM1Z, and I have no idea what features it has....
The other stock kernel ROMs are just updated firmware with root, but there are 2 that are basically the same. Which one should I use?
Do you need bootloader for mods? (like PureXAudio)
You choose any one you want. No one on here will tell you want you want, its up to you to try, test and decide for yourself.
As for other mods, no you don't need bootloader unlocked. That is only for custom kernels.
If you read the OP of each mod it will tell you the requirements and if it does not say "Requires an unlocked bootloader" then its fine to use on a stock kernel.
You will just have to root, install recovery and flash them.
Do ROMs need to be of the exact model number?
For example, you have a ROM for the C6903, but I have the C6906. Can I use the ROM?
Or if mine is build number 14.1.G.1.518, and yours is 14.1.G.2.257, can I still use the ROM?
And does the phone get unrooted when updated OTA? And how do you know which build number is newer?
I would first suggest you read the tutorials in the general section and the dev section.
Most, if not all, your questions will be answered there and I will only be cutting and pasting information from there.
As something to think about, when I first joined xda I spent a LOT of time reading guides and tutorials before doing anything to my phone.
I am not saying I wont answer your questions, but the answers are out there for you already and taking things steady will give you the best chance of learning and not doing something daft to your phone and bricking it.

Best of luck, and I am available via PM if you need me
Thanks for the threads! They were pretty useful
Although I still have questions about ROMs. If your room is for C6903, and I have 6906, can I still use it? I would guess that you can, as the only thing that change is the baseband.
Also, what ROM do you recommend? Yours (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2504638), this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2440408) or generic 534 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2505796)?
Do you know what Honam1Z? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463675). I cant seem to find the advantages of the ROM....
Thanks again for answering my questions, mate.
And I'm sorry if you have received this same message by PM. My sent box appeared empty after I sent it, so I didnt think it reached you.
HI Guys
About to get my Z1 but i have a question.
Have we managed to solve the issue with the bootloader being unlocked and the camera stop working?
Trust me, when that issue is fixed it will be plastered all over this forum so there will be no doubt about it.
If you find no new news then its still broken.
PS, you can still install custom roms without unlocking the bootloader, just not custom kernels.
