Hey guys, I know its kind of a stupid thing to start a thread on so just spear with me
In 2009 I had an iPhone 3GS. Its was the latest iPhone in 2009 and was super fast. No lags on opening apps, closing apps, multitasking, scrolling screen and stuff like that. It was 99% LAGFREE. Games worked wonderful. I'm a big fan of hacking, so I jailbroke the iPhone and it still remained smooth and fast. For those who don't know, iPhone 3GS has a 779mhz CPU (apple clocked it down to 600mhz to prevent battery drains and other instabilities) and only 256mb ram. Now I have an international version of galaxy S that is clocked to 1.3 GHZ that has a 512 MB of RAM and believe me its slower than the iPhone. I just want to know what is wrong with our phones? Does apple use some magic superpowers on their devices? Opening apps lags, closing apps lags the home screen scrolling for some time, there are frequent crashing due to low RAM, there's lags in browser :S the music player lacks things as filtering of files, it has a worse reception than the iPhone 3gs. GPS is not goood. Even typing is sometimes laggy... the new jellybean made it a lil more like an iPhone due to its 60hz refresh rate and triple buffering but it still lags. Can you guys give me your opinions on this and stuff? Again I'm not trying to complain, I'm just wondering how could this be possible.

Itouch 4 maybe you have the 8gb one which is clocked to 600mhz and has 256mb ram. & believe me I had the iPhone 3GS in 2009 and I remember how everything was smooth even when I jailbroke it I OCed my iPhone to 800mhz and it became really fast. So idk... but now I know. Android uses CPU to render the UI, but as the new JELLYBEAN came out, its UI is rendered by the GPU which is how its supposed to be. That's why its alot smoother than previous android OS

The answer is quite simple: Apple produces hardware and software made only for this hardware, Android is only software which has to work on any device. Furthermore there are more specs than RAM size or CPU frequency. If the hardware is specialized for something, you don't need that heavy hardware.
E.g. Playstations: They are optimized for graphic rendering and do that really well without a great amount of Hardware (I think the latest has 256 MB of graphic RAM). But try running anything else (Windows, lol) on them, it will lagg like hell
Same thing with the iPhone.

If that's the case, then why don't the android community create like groups? You know, Motorola Android group, Samsung Android group, HTC Android group etc. to ensure that the software is running according to the hardware! That'd be easier and cheaper for the companies too, plus will have a great impact on the reliability of the OS

Ok so I love android and all of it's openness and mods. I like to modify all electronics that I have. But the only problem I have with it is that it isn't smooth. I have had an iPhone in the past and it was smooth. It just confuses me how 1ghz can lag on a mobile os. I guess this rant is to ask how do I smooth the edges. I've tried many roms and some were better than others. One major thing I want is when I unlock it, when I slide homescreen, and when I open the app drawer to be smooth. Any ideas settings roms?

Read through a lot of threads, and understand that there isn't what you're looking for. You might try MIUI, people report it as smooth - never tried it personally. Also, for launcher use LauncherPro, it's smooth.
About the gigahertz stuff: CPU speed doesn't matter as much as SW does. And there is no "smoothness support" yet.
Android isn't smooth. It's powerful, though. Personally, I like the trade off.

delete all your apps, turn off all services, and it will run just like the iphone. kill every app after you use it. - that's what the iphone does.
You can tweak the internal task killer to speed up your phone. It takes some work and testing. This thread has the directions and explanations.

This has been useless since Froyo. As I once researched and posted, Froyo kills the processes much earlier than Eclair (OOM=12 instead of 16) and considering the amount of memory on Nexus - you never get anywhere below 100MB free unless you run a super-heavy app, and those never stay in background.
Now these tweaks don't do a thing.
does power mean smoothness? I just don't get the concept of having a fast processor and not being smooth. I mean it is almost the same speed as my netbook... on a phone. It seems like that should be smooth. Maybe I'm asking for to much. But another thing I have seen videos of people on cyanogen and it is running smoothly with a live wallpaper. I have never got cyanogen to run smoothly for me even with a still wallpaper. Is there some magical setting everyone but me knows about?

Power = ability to do things. Not CPU power, OS power.
Smoothness = frame rate of transitions between screens in UI. By most part, it's a result of heavy GPU utilization (which Android doesn't do stock) and programming that puts graphics as top priority (which isn't the case with Android). When CPU is made busy making beautiful graphics, it makes beautiful graphics. When it's not the main concern - it makes what it makes.
Again, you seem to be complaining about the launcher - otherwise you wouldn't bring this live wallpaper thing. So go download LauncherPro.
Folks go on about miui being smooth but personally I found it quite choppy at times, and this was most evident using the miui default launcher and comparing to say an iPhone 4, it looks very stuttery. Its better with launcherpro, but then you've lost half the reason for using it.
I am using cm6 and a theme (minimal matte fwiw ) and its very smooth and nice looking (and believe me I am very sensitive to, and loathe slow performance on a latest Gen phone).
Best compromise I've found yet on android.
I use the latest CM6 nightlies with Launcher Pro Plus and have a lot of widgets on my homescreen, smooth as butter.
I do remember the homescreen being a bit choppy when I ran 2.1 on my N1 though...
Have you messed with the performance settings? I hear that switching the performance setting to 24 instead of 34 helps. I'm not on cyanogen right now so I don't remember the exact setting but it is cyan settings then performance.

Truth of the matter is, is that Android running as SMOOTH as an iPhone would be difficult, simply because the IOS operating system doesnt allow any applications to run in the background. Android has TONS of apps that run in the background, and its still smooth as hell if your running the right ROM.
In all honestly, as much as I LOVE enomther and cyan ROMS, MIUI is hands down the smoothest and fastest ROM I have ever used. Give it a shot. I promise that if you can get past the iPhonish look, you will LOVE the speed and fluidness of the ROM. I cant recommend it enough.
I have used the miui roms and they are awesome. But honestly I just feel like a sell out while running them.

The reason why even iPhone 3G's can feel "smoother" than Android phones at most times: hardware acceleration.
Ever since the 2G they've had a dedicated GPU which was used to its fullest in basic UI interactions. We see phones like the SGS with freak GPUs but Android doesn't allow full use of them.
Phandroid made that article on a supposed "Gingerbread" leak. They claim it will introduce hardware acceleration. Hopefully thats true and we'll never hear complaints about a laggy UI again!

Yup, most of the smoothness complaints is just hardware acceleration complaints. After gingerbread if it has hardware acceleration, we won't hear the laggy UI issue, we'll just hear the bandwagon "Fragmentation!"

People have been saying that the Galaxy S actually come close to be an iPhone killer. Or it already has that I'm not sure of. But after using the SGS for almost a year now, I do feel that it is slow. Much much slower than iPhones.
However, it is okay if they aren't many apps. Everytime my SGS slows down, I would resort to factory reset and it would be okay until I start spamming downloads again.
This is totally contradictory to the iPhone. The lags I experience isn't major though. But it is annoying for sure and comparing to iPhones, I always feel like my phone is somehow underpowered. Anyone has the same experience? By the way, I'm using stock 2.3.4 JVQ.
You are right and wrong.
Sgs is not slow.
Based on your descrioption it appears that your problem only apears after you have installed lot of apps. I would bet this is because a lot of these apps have services running and auto load at startup.
The android platform's implementation of true multitasking does inherently introduce issues like lags when when critical resources like memory is depleted. Sgs only has 512mb ram. So when lots of services run in the background, it slows down and although it tries to free up ram, it can overwhelmed when all those apps tries to restart itself.
Task killers / autostarts app / kernel and tunings can only do so much based on my experience.
Best option is to be more selective with app download and what you really want to keep on the phone.
IPhone doesn't have true multitasking thus don't havr the same issue and appears faster. Of course the UI is GPU accelerated which helps.
So really depends how much you yourself multitask at then of the day and whether you need it. Many don't and thus find iPhone ideal.
Ice cream sandwich will bring gpu acceleration mainstream to android.
Still loving my sgs. I have an ipad2 which I also love but squirm when I wanted it to multitask.

Personal opinion - I enjoy customizing the phone, flashing and changing things, right now I'm on MIUI Mint Berry Edition 1.10.28 and it's fast, behaves very well and I really can´t complain.
If you don't like customizing and "owning" your phone, that way I believe you would prefer the Iphone because in terms of sock stuff it behaves very well.
Those are different phones, people have different taste you have pros and cons on both sides

Apple clock their processors very high but Samsung don't. That's why many people report their iPod touch or their iPhone getting very hot and then starts smoking. I read on a tech site nearly 10 months ago that a Guy bought a iPod touch and some days later while listening music it started smoking then he went to apple store aand they gave him a new one , this happened to that Guy 4 Times and he got a new i pod touch everytime and had loose his data again and again everytime they gave him a new one. You can call that Guy unlucky but still it happened to him, so apple just wants to get the best out of their devices even though they start burning and you can cook food on them. I use doctorz rom and haven't faced even a single lag on the latest v8.1

Whoa.
I'm pretty sure Apple underclocks more than overclocks the majority of their devices. I read that the iPhone 4S, for example, was underclocked to 800MHz (from 1000MHz, I'm assuming).
I don't think so it maybe different for iPhone 4s. As its dual core also has more ram.

I don't know if Wikipedia is a good enough source for you, but it says so right under the Wikipedia article for Underclocking.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underclocking
"Most smartphones and PDAs, such as the Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, and Apple iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s, use the "underclocking" of a more powerful processor, rather than the full clocking of a less powerful processor, to maximize battery life. The designers for such mobile devices often discover that a slower processor gives worse battery life than a more powerful processor at a lower clock rate. They select a processor on the basis of the performance per watt of the processor."
I'm sure you could find more credible sources if you googled it.

the hardware on the S+ is really great for a single core phone, but the software sucks, if we had a lil more developing in our section we would've had the real deal , even though there are a few custom roms out there. my friend who owns an iphone 4 always repeats the fact that he doesn't need to do anything additional to his phone and that "it just works", and we have to accept that fact, even though, with the right software we can get a better product than the iphone 4

1. This discussion belongs in the general discussion thread not in the development section.
2. Unless you intend starting a flame war I would suggest that singing the praises of a certain fruit associated manufacturer in an Android forum is not a great plan.
3. If you want to compare phones then make sure they are in the same price class. So if your going to match Android against the fruit munger phone then you need to compare with the galaxy nexus or galaxy s ii.

AFAIK GTA3 is supposed to run on devices with a dual-core processor (iPhone 4S, SGS2, Sensation etc).
I guess it's not a marketing trick (like it was in case of most "tegra only" games) and the game really needs 2 cores for runing fine and smooth.
Anyway, i dont think we lost something big

The graphics are exceptional but the lag is so bad that it hinders my gameplay significantly.
I don't understand why this is happening. The game runs perfectly smooth on an ipod toucb 4th generation; sure I know that apple has a way of making their devices run apps smoothly. I also know that optimus 2x's tegra 2 gpu chipset isn't the most powerful but it's certainly not a low end GPU either. As a result coupled with a dual core processor surely it should play very smoothly, when a device like an ipod touch with its mere 1ghz can even execute it fine.

Which android version/rom are you using?
ICS is known for using a lot of memory. So, there is a chance that the 512Mb of our device is not enough for using the android system + game.
If you're in ICS, I suggest you to downgrade to a rock solid CM7 GB rom. (temasek's unnoficial cm7 is just AWESOME).
I am really sad to say it, but i think our device is not capable of running ICS in a heavy use profile.

I am really sad to say it, but i think our device is not capable of running ICS in a heavy use profile.

That's depressing, because i'm currently using temasek's unofficial cm7 ROM
On a side note, based on the Play Store reviews for Dark Knight Rises it looks like high end phones like the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus and even the galaxy S3 experience occasional lag. Therefore i'm not entirely giving up hope of being able to play this game...
Also you say that our device has too little RAM. Once again i'll refer to the ipod touch 4th gen. It only has 256 MB of RAM and a 1gHz processor, yet my friends have shown me how TDKR runs quite smoothly on their device. I'd like to know how this is possible.
I know about smartphones' inferior gaming quality compared to portable consoles like PSP which only have 64MB of RAM and a 222mHz processor, because PSP's are specifically designed for gaming and don't have other processes that interfere with their performance. I don't think the same analogy can apply to ipod touches and android phones, because ipods are essentially mobile devices without the texting and calling capabilities. So I REALLY can't see why our phones are incapable of playing this game.
Use ramhack to have some more RAM available, overclock your processor and use the highest OTF value for the GPU if you use the Etana Kernel. You could also kill all running processes before running the game. Just make sure to have enough RAM free for the game.

Well that's nice to know. Still frustrated about this game.
mybe is the rom problem instead of ICS laggy,
i had no issue while i m in ICS, but not with the game you mention

I'm sorry but I have no idea what you just said...are you suggesting that I use an ICS ROM?

That it don't work good on the O2X can only be because of 3 things.
1. The developer have made the game primary for newer phones with more power.
2. The software on your phone don't make good use of the hardware.
3. Poorly written/bad code in the game-
That it runs fine on the PSP you seem to have a good understanding for. Good thing to mention about the PSP is that the resolution is really small compared to phones now days. But you miss the similarity to the iPod? Sure the iPod runs the "same" firmware as the iPhones. Only that when it's installed to the devices it leaves out all phone stuff(things thats ALWAYS on and use RAM).
This is also a common thing that it's nothing that people can deny. Most apps runs better on iOS then their counterpart on Android. Why? Because its easier to program for iOS. Not easier in the mean of writing the code but testing it and making sure that it runs on every or at least those devices you want. Without the need of posting a minimal requirement list like on PC's. Also goes for the PSP and every other game console, maybe I didn't need to mention that.
O yea for the record don't try ICS rom it will be a waste of time since it don't have any HW-acceleration.

I see...so ipod touches don't multitask either. Well that actually makes perfect sense seeing as it's iOS.
And yeah I know about the lack of HW acceleration. LG has to release ICS officially so we can get the drivers...but the hopes of getting ICS on our phone are getting dimmer by the day especially with LG canada confirming no ICS for their phones -.-
*Edit: I'm going to be bold and deny the fact O2X is not powerful enough. I just saw 2 reviews in the newest reviews for TDKR on playstore, one using HTC One X and the other Nexus 7 both complaining about horrible constant lag. If some quad core devices experience this lag, then surely it must be the dev's problem?

The 3D hardware acceleration is working perfectly fine on ics. So there shouldn't be a difference between ics and gb in games. Except some that are caused by less free memory in ics.

I have CM9 Nova HD - ICS, along with Chainfire 3d with all the drivers. Still the laggy performance of TDKR.
Guess they have not made the game accordingly.

As the title says....I wasn't trying to overload the phone, but while playing TD5 I actually got it to lag. Normally, the game doesn't use much battery, but anyone familiar with the game after level 80 or so it gets pretty intense. I put the game on fast forward mode too and it got pretty laggy. Would be pretty interesting to use this game as a benchmark. Here's a screenshot: http://imgur.com/b2qrQpn
It might be hard to tell, but there was A LOT of frame droppings. Which doesn't really surprise me. Anyway, just thought I would share.

interesting. have you used other devices with this game? how does it compare? you'd think that the nexus 5 with it's cpu/gpu being pretty top of the line would not have problems with anything. but that is a lot going on at once.

Asphalt 8 lags no problem.. Though it could be the engine. While the game looks pretty I get the feeling the game's engine isn't properly optimized.

i've yet to try any graphic intense games on my Nexus 5. i would hope that any serious lag would come down to the app coding and not the device.
I'm pretty sure all this lag is due to the aggressive thermal throttling from lg.

but i thought the throttling was way less than what was found on the Nexus 4. i guess we can use an app to see what happens during the lag.
found an article about throttling on the Nexus 5 in case anyone was interested. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/when-benchmarks-arent-enough-cpu-performance-in-the-nexus-5/

The only other device that I have tried this with is the 2013 Nexus 7. I don't think I've gotten to this part but whenever I do I will let you know. I can't recall if it lagged before.

Yeah, Asphalt 8 runs for me with no problem either. I agree with the optimization. I'm going to try to get to this point on my Nexus 7 2013. Although the specs on that are lower.
Ive gotten the nexus 5 to lag substantially while playing FIFA 14, both on Stock and with a Custom ROM and trinity kernel.
The lag was less on the custom ROM and trinity kernel then it was on stock...
why do u guys think there is a lag on the nexus 5, ive played fifa so many times on the iphone 5 and never had a single stutter from it.
Edit: BTW the game becomes really choppy when there is rain in the game, you pretty much cant play the game it gets that bad.
It lags a ton as well on the later levels in survivor mode on PvZ2. Anything after level 10 or so and the amount of zombies kills the fps. The phone also gets uncomfortably hot.

iOS users expect a good experience.
I get the feel they didn't even try on Android for FIFA.

Lately Apple has gone downhill. I've got myself the latest iPad mini which uses the same A7 processor found in the iPad Air.
There is lag and plenty of it. I've tried Dead Trigger 2 and Bastion and both of the them suffer from lag and the odd stutter every now and then.
And what's even more funny is now theres plenty of fragmentation on iOS. Read the reviews on some of the graphic intensive games. Bugs and crashes galore on some of the slightly older hardware. Plus on the description you will have big captions like " DO NOT BUY IF YOU HAVE THE...." And " DOES NOT WORK ON THE..."
Apple is no longer the benchmark when it comes to games now.

I kinda agree with your post about apple going downhill. But it still is the benchmark device to beat, its wobbling but hasnt been dethroned just yet. Ios7 is buggy and all the apps have not been optimized for it yet. Same can be said about optimization on KitKat.
The games that iPhone can play with minimum to no stutter are not even playable or are not even available for android.
Fragmentation wise, iPhone has gotten a bit fragmented but you also have to realize the os and the new games are very graphic intensive. Older hardware can not possibly run them properly such as games for ps4 won't ever run on the ps1 or even the ps2, we can't expect current games and os to run on devices older then 2 years. People give android a bad name for fragmentation but it really isn't that bad when u take into account the requirements for the latest software. I do not expect the same software to run perfectly on my nexus 5 and galaxy nexus. True a two year old device is not that old but in technological terms 2 years is more then a decade.
I love android and iOS the same, each has its advantages and disadvantages. My personal device is iOS and work is android, each serves its purpose perfectly.
My only qualm with android is as follows: a device such as the nexus 5 with almost twice the processing power as an iPhone 5, double the number of cores, and twice the memory still can't keep up with the iPhone.
Thats like having a ferrari but still not being able to keep up with a bmw or in this case it would more be like android is a tuned import with all the latest and greatest updates but still cant come close to a stock luxury exotic ( i know the price difference between the two this is just an example). Google and android oems need to work on making android work faster and more fluid on lower specs then just putting in the most ram and the fastest processor, what's the point of having those if it still gets beat by a device with half its specs. if apple introduces a 2.3Ghz quad core phone with 2gb of ram that would be game over.

I have to disagree with the iPhone being the phone to beat.... Samsung has beaten apple and LG with the nexus 5 and G2 put out two amazing devices that are beyond apples latest and greatest. I am sorry but the iPhone 5s and other iPhones and including the iPads have some pretty noticeable lag and stutters. As for android the improvement has been amazingly awesome android used to be the extremely laggy and stuttered for everything. Now it's pretty much ios fluid. I just switched from the iPhone 5s to the note 3 after a test run to see if I would like ios again and ios7 stutters a lot. To me the note 3 feels more fluid and yes touchwiz is very heavy and hard to run
The lag is a software limitation, not at all hardware related.
Well my experience with bloons TD5 is quite good on N5. I get to about lvl 100 after that it starts to lag a bit more and more with following levels. But in my opinion this is game itself. My friend with galaxy S3 gets to lvl 115-120 before becomes almost unplayable, other folks with N4 gets to 120-125 lvl before it gets unplayable. I get to about lvl 130 before it gets the same as S3 or N4 performance (0.5-2 FPS)
All in all it's bloons TD5 fault, not hardware, game engine itself is at fault.

90%? lol I think you're overestimating EA...I'm pretty sure they're satisfied with 60%, judging by every EA produced or sponsored game I've played in the past 5 years. It's a horrible company that needs to be shut down.

I know Samsung and LG have introduced amazing devices but thats still on paper. I'm not comparing them based on reviews or watching videos online, I own both the nexus 5 and the iphone 5s. Android has gotten a lot better from its laggy days and is one hell of a responsive OS with functionality to boot. That being said I can still see the nexus 5 lag and havent been able to make the iphone 5s lag at all, i have had a few apps just crash on me randomly but thats about it.
Everything on the iphone is more fluid then on android. Most of it has to do with apps installed, most developers dont really put in as much time into android as they do on IOS. The specs on the new android devices are amazing running quad core cpus with 2 gb of RAM but in the end what use is all that power when the phone still lags. For instance just a few minutes ago i got a call on the nexus and when the call ended the phone just got stuck on the call screen unresponsive for 30-40 seconds.
If we compare just the hardware then there really is no competition for current android phones, apple has not put out anything with those kinda specs. But if we want to see which OS runs better shouldnt it be on the same kind of hardware. The iphone 5 runs a Dual-Core processor and for me it handles iOS7 perfectly without a lag, i would like to see how a galaxy s2 with a Dual-Core processor would handle kitkat. That would be comparing similar hardware on the latest OS's by each company.
I know you would say why not the s3 and the s4, because they run on quad-core processors. I know this kinda got winded but what im trying to say is that an iphone 5 with half the specs of a current android device performs on par and at times better then those devices then how would android fare if iphone gets a quad-core processor, there is a lot to be said about each OS's optimization based on just the specs.
