.9999999999 = 1? - Off-topic

Someone explain that to me
Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app

Well it will only equal one if you are rounding up to the nearest whole number! Other wise it obviously is itself.

Uhh, no? 0.999999 is 0.999999 not 1...

Go into the calculator, type in .9999999999 (ten 9's) and hit equals. My friend was telling me about how it equals 1, he learned it in pre-calc today or something

Its close enough for government work

Yes, there's some skewed logic that makes .999 repeating equal 1. I'll have to look in my calc book and find it.

Did you even read the two links I provided?

Is 0.9999999999 = 1?
No. The clue is in the question.
Mathematicians make assumptions, and this is a classic case of that. They're saying, "It's so close to 1 that we may as well call it that." I'd love to see the mathematician that agrees with the thread title working for NASA and calculating safety measures for rockets. (Actually I wouldn't because it would mean people would likely die!)

It's because your calculator wants to output numbers beginning with a whole integer. 0.999 instead of .999. So it cuts off the last digit and rounds with it. 9 is greater than 5 and so it rounds up. Then carries the addition over to make it 1.
Does that make sense without having to go into great detail? Once you get into advanced mathematics, you need to learn how all the different types of calculators are programmed to operate. Cause you learn you can't trust them because of problems like the one you are using. So you learn some don't follow order of operation, some round off the last digit, some cut it off.
It's why I always liked programming my formulas and theorems in cpp and getting the answers that way with the libraries that we made in my group.

707 + 707 = 1414

1>0.999999999, but the approximation is close.
It depends on what you're working on. If you were building a part for an aircraft and needed accuracy to be +/- .0001, it's the same. However, if I ordered to trade to $0.999999999 x 10^15 for $1.00 x 10^15, you'd be getting ripped off.

An easy test to figure out if your calculator rounds the last digit or cuts it off is to do 10÷6. Is the last digit a 6 or a 7. If it's 6, it cuts off, 7 it rounds off.

Ha yes they are, and im not sure i just know it has to do with a magnetic field.
The first one is an angle. μ0, Ι, s are variables and π = 3.14
In the second one, he/she replaces the angle φ with with a type.
The third one is the resolution of the integral of Βavg. Oblviously I don't know what Bavg is, but probably the answer is where you found them.
And in the fourth one he/she replaces the previous equations to find the final type.
In order to understand these equations you have to know their physical meaning which must be in the description of the problem.
In Greece actually we learn integrals in highschool. :-/

AQ Test

Let's see how well adjusted you guys are. From this post of my own:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18933826&postcount=967
"Here's a puzzle of sorts. Perhaps some of you would be kind enough to take the test and report your results?
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/9.12/aqtest.html
I'll tell you now, that having found this test from another forum, the average results on that forum thread were slightly off from the norm. I explain that by reason of tech forumites may have slightly anti-social/anal/OCD tendencies as a whole.
My personal result was way off the curve. I'll tell you what i score at, once a few of you have taken the test for yourselves. If you'll be so kind..."
So if you have few minutes take the test and report your findings. Be as honest in your answers as possible.
I got a 7, I'm not sure if thats good or bad haha.
19, and as above.. I have no idea Hahah , explain Dirk

If you wanted to see our ocd answers you should ask questions like this
Your 1 month old phone gets a small scratch at the top right, Do you,
A) Buy a new phone, either the same or different model
B) Start looking at the prices for a new digitalizer and start work
C) Leave it its only a scratch
D) Make more so it blends in

I just re-ran the test to see if my score now is anything like what it was as i remember it being a year ago. It was 1 point different.
To be fair, knowing what the test is about introduces all sorts of bias and error, and any good scientist would write it off in an instant as being completely unscientific. The nature of the questions could leave the subject answering in a way that produces a desired result.
For example i could set a test titled 'Are you a Psychopath?'
Q1) Somebody steals your sandwich from the staff canteen. Do you:
A) Find out who it was and explain to them why you are upset.
B) Find out who it was and plot your revenge.
C) Batter them around the head with a staple gun until they are unconscious.
It does rely upon the subject being as honest as possible with the answers and hopefully not skewing the results too much.
Anyway, more results before i give it up...!

That's actually very insightful. And the reason i didn't mention that the A in AQ stands for Autism, and the reason i mentioned OCD instead, was in the hope that people would take the test without having pre-conceived notions about what the answers 'should' be. Basically, my way to make the test a little more scientific.
i.e 'OCD' answers would be different to 'Autistic' answers, although they may share a lot of the same, underlying pathology.

"The mission of the ARC is to understand the biomedical causes of autism spectrum conditions, and develop new and validated methods for assessment and intervention. The ARC fosters collaboration between scientists in Cambridge University and outside, to accelerate this mission."
Seems to me the ARC are doing valuable and helpful work. If you have a problem with that take it up with them.
Proper autism diagnosis requires significantly more testing than an online questionnaire. My son spent countless hours with a neuropsychologist to get accurate answers. They may be doing valuable research, but this is not any form of a valid measure. Nothing aimed at you, Dirk. The offensive part is that whoever put that up online thinks a handful of questions answered by random people on the internet can tell them whether or not they fall somewhere on the spectrum. It demeans the struggle that is everyday life of someone with autism.
Edit:
It seems they acknowledge themselves that this is kinda bs.
" Our tests are posted on our website to enable free access to academic researchers. None of them are diagnostic: No single score on any of our tests or questionnaires indicates that an individual has an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). Weird sealed opening/door on our house

We live in a 50's terraced house that shares an alleyway. In that alley half way down is a small arch between the two properties. Now on the right of the arch (pictured) is an I suppose locked opening of some kind. I don't even know what to call it... on the other side if you were looking at it is another one similar on what would be the right looking onto it. So whatever it is it was something each household has/had but I for the life of me cannot figure it out!!

It's likely an access door for something to do with plumbing, gas, electrical, or something like that that runs through the brick. Probably a shut off valve or junction inside. A screwdriver may open it, or it could need a key. :good:

Or, or, or maybe...just maybe it's a portal to another dimension where dogs rule the world and cats are their army. If you think about it, this post makes no sense but it's way too late for you to realize this as you've read this far and now are rolling your eyes in frustration because you are still reading my nonsensical post.
Either way, keep reading as it may get more informative... or it may just continue to be a huge waste of your valuable time..
Cheers,
