Just ordered an Atrix 4g Lapdock for my AHD - Motorola Atrix HD

I just don't care about the webtop app, I will use it as an HDMI/Keyboard/mouse just like I do with my cheapo 7" tablet on ICS.
it cannot get any better at 49$ on all4cellular
all4cellular.com/product/motorola-atrix-4g-laptop-dock-refurbished.html
Keep in mind you might have to hack the lapdock a bit to fit your AHD... or get extension cables for it.

Funny but no, I got mine on ebay and paid quite a bit more before finding that deal. So I chose to share it...
By the way, the verizon stores have the lapdock 100 New for 49$ while supplies last

let me know how it turns out, photos would be nice(the hdmi part)

I went to the verizon store in Malone NY and they didn't have the lapdock 100 but I was able to try my Atrix HD in a Bionic Lapdock.
Simply put, the lapdock is a 12 inches HDMI monitor with a USB hub speading the AHD micro USB port to 2 full sized usb ports, the keyboard and the trackpad.
So it turn your phone into a large screen netbook Under android ICS... with 4g lte connectivity.
It was just fine without the heavy webtop app. Specialy for 49$
The bionic lapdock was still at 129$

By the way, all the lapdock, exception made for the 500 model, are dumb device. Any smartphone or device with hdmi out and usb out can be connected to the motorola lapdock. ( including the mk802 android stick or the samsung galaxy series)

How's the resolution, I dont think you got the lapdocks native 1366*768, did it look blurry? And was it edge to edge?

Well I didn't have a lot of time to play with the dock in the verizon store and still waiting for mine but other people reported that various hdmi devices will do it in 720p resolution. That would leave 24 pixels on each side of the screen. You can google "lapdock hack" to see what people are doing with it.

so this is what it must look like ? click for bigger.
its a galaxy nexus with 720p screen and soft buttons.
It should do good once the dpi gets set to ~20 lower...
did the keyboard and touchpad work ?
By the way, if you set dpi to a certain value, ICS will switch to tablet mode, and it will almost be the same as webtop mode, maybe the atrix2 launcher works too, for smaller icons... if you are interested, maybe we could figure something out.

It looked exactly like when I connect my ICS tablet to the HDM on the 720P hdtv

Well let me know how it turns out.
I'll be getting an Atrix HD in about a month, and I know some guys from the atrix2 forum who will help with the black borders and tablet mode. (Myself included, lol)
It would be even better if you could get some info for us while I still have mine.

If you have an ATRIX 4g dock, you can us it for a make shift laptop with a Raspberry Pi kit.

anyway, HDMI mirroring of a 720p phone screen is just perfect and still better than my 7" tablet.

Got the lapdock for the 4g. The keyboard is just amazing, screen is perfect, I just use the overscan setting on the atrix hd to match the screen resolution and fill it completely. I had to flip the lapdock connectors as Stated in various post on lapdock vs razr. Easy job, perfect results. I use the chrome browser and it just work as it should be.
Very well invested 50 Bucks
Edit: only the lapdock for the atrix 4g need to have the connectors flipped. The bionic, the lapdock 100 and the lapdock 500 just fit out of the box.

Lapdock : the pictures
I would say this lapdock is just brilliant. It's very well made, surprisingly thin and lightweight.
From now on, all my cell phones will have to be able to use this accessory (hdmi out and usb out)
I don't care about the lack of webtop app, ICS android just do it as a tablet.
then again, it is fast. thanks to the dual core cpu/gpu. In my specific usage, the Atrix HD + Lapdock is faster than my atom 270 Netbook under Ubuntu 12.04

lol its upside down, huh... is it really bad for the wifi signal ?
do you have a setting for settings>input>pointer speed ?
if so, i recommend you set it 1 or 2 notches higher

it just beat the laptop hands down.
As I always keep the pictures/videos/pdf on the sdcard, it's a lot faster on the atrix than booting up a laptop..
So I just chose the video on the AHD, docked the phone and pressed PLAY and instant video !!
this was just impressive !!!

Good HDTV?

My father's looking to buy an HDTV and I have no clue to help him so we both don't really know what to buy.
We have a 0-1400$ budget (Canadian dollar) for a 42" display. (0 would be an acceptable price)
Here are my question:
-I'll occasionnaly play Xbox 360 on it (not much tho, I got my 15" for that )
-We don't have any HD stuff right now
-He wishes to plug his laptop on it
-What else do we need to watch for?
Well you need to think about if you want plasma or LCD. I just bought a 47 inch LCD 1080p HDTV and love it.
Since you dont have any HD products except the xbox 360 you should look for something that does 720p which also will be in your budget. I would go with LCD and look for a 5 ms refresh rate or lower. I got a LG, it stood out in the store so much and I love it!
He wants 1080p, 42 inches and quality.
I tried explaining him about 720p, but he wants 1080p. I guess the only thing we really need is quality and something to plug his computer on it (either laptop just for fun or desktop as a media station).
If you are going to use it as a PC monitor, then LCD is the only choice to consider. I was shopping for a new monitor to augment my PC's dinky 17" at Fry's, and some how I ended up with this:

It is a 40" 720p on sale for $999. I was told that 1080p is great, but there isn't enough 1080 content available to justify it. Also remember this, up close flat screen TVs look like crap. The bigger you go, the farther back you need to be from it to view it.
lcd vs. plasma
plasma have burn in which is bad if it happens there is nothing one can do
plasma give a imho better image colour and contrast
but also use alot more power then lcd

When I was at Best Buy looking at HDTV's for about 2 hours I would say LCD's looks MUCH better then plasmas especially with high action programs.
OP, if you want a true 1080p TV you better bump up your weak budget if you want a decent TV
Don't forget about DLP.
I know there are a lot of people who say no, but if you truly compare and shop around it gives you the most bang for the buck and you can hook up you computer, xbox and laptop to it. I have a Samsung and it gives a great picture running 1080i and it is 1080p capable.
Tigerdirect.com has some great prices on new HDTV's. I have had a very positive experience working with them. Best Buy and Circuit City will sell you the world when you are there and then they don't honor 3/4 of what they sold you (in terms of price plans and warrrantees). In most cases, the manufacturers(sp?) warranty will cover what you need it to and will even send someone out to work on the tv locally.
That said, I would include DLP in your search because it definitely fits your price range. DLP are only like 12-16 inches thick in their largest spot. If you're buying a big screen, its definitely going to be a prominant piece of furniture in the room so whats a foot off the wall vs. 3 inches....
I sell these things for a living so I think I may be of some help to you.
From the things that you are wanting to do, I think DLP would be the best choice for you.
They make excellent computer monitors. I have a PC hooked up to mine at home and it looks fantastic.
The response time is extremely fast. Much better than what LCD can offer. This will help alot when watching sports, racing or playing video games. Video games on LCD TV's often look blurry when there is a lot of action going on-screen. The only downfall to DLP is that it has a bulb that you must replace every 3 or 4 years. The bulbs pricing will range anywhere from 3-400 dollars depending on the set. Beware of the new Samsung DLP's. They have a bowing problem that I have seen with almost every one I have sold. Because of that, I have switched to Mitsubishi and they are performing really well.
If you must go flat panel, you are pretty much stuck with LCD. If you use a plasma, he could suffer burn in with a static image from his laptop. LCD's have a very long lifespan, but have unnatural colors and lower contrast than DLP's and Plasmas. They are also the slowest of all of the technologies. If you do go LCD, beware of the cheapies. They may look great in the store, but they are a lower quality panel, and will not last as long. Many people who have bought Vizios are finding out now that very thing. Look at Toshiba, Samsung or Panasonic.
PM me if you have any questions.

LCD's are overly bright. They look the best on a showroom floor because of the bright, vivid colors.
When I look for a tv, I look for the one with the most true to life picture.
In ranking pictures of TV's as far as realism goes, the best is plasma, followed by DLP, then LCD.

With my 47 inch 1080p LCD I am experiencing a little lag, not blur. Its pretty annoying when your trying to play because when the controls are of 4-5 ms it does change how you play. No fun right now
What do you have your xbox set to output the HD at?
I've used both 480 & 720, saw no real diff so I left it at 480 everythings blazing fast.
I think the blur problem is the xbox not the LCD TVs.

Hi guys.
What is the difference betwean FULL HD and HDready?
Best HDTV
I have Olevia. Was middle priced but runs like the pro's.
Typically HD ready means that the TV doesn't include an off-air HD tuner inside. You would need a seperate tuner to receive local HD channels. Full HD means that the TV supports 1080p.

The price tag doesn't really have anything to do with the issue. And they compared it with a Galaxy Tab 7.0. The display really should look better than it does. I agree, seems like they messed up the calibration.
Here is my Nexus 7 (on the left) compared to my Nook Color (on the right). White saturation shouldn't be that bad.

I don't know what the ipad2 has, I don't care for apple so I don't do my homework on their ****. I do know the ipad2 has the best screen though so comparing a budget tab screen to the ipad2 screen is pretty stupid.

All the people being defensive need to understand what this review is saying before leaping to the rescue. If the Nexus is good enough for you, that's fine. Your views on display quality are entirely subjective based on the best display you've had the fortune to use for any extended period of time. But what you are looking at is not just "what you get for $200", but a much better display hobbled by a stupid manufacturer error. Try and look beyond your post-purchase rationalization and maybe people can start caring enough to push an official response/solution to this.
Perhaps there are gradeA displays out there...not mine.
I think folks are either in denial....or rationalize it out via the $199 price.
For the resolution purported on this, my display is greatly disappointing...and I know the difference.
The calibration statement resonated immediately...I do think that's what's going on.
If dev's can mod it, great.

I think it's the denial.
I used to think Apple fanboys were bad... that is until I read the Nexus 7 forums, with many crossing the line from denial to delusional. When I write that small text rendering on the Nexus 7 is poorer than my 12" Windows laptop with 1280x800 resolution and ClearType on, I get 20 posts saying the Nexus 7 renders small text just as well as the retina Ipad or renders hundred page PDFs faster than the Ipad.
I just want a good product. $250 isn't chump change in this economy. Most of us wouldn't have bought a Chinese knockoff tablet for $250 if the reviews had said "craptastic colors, peeling screens, lose adhesive, insensitive touch screens." Think about that. So let's all be honest with ourselves.

exactly. Ipad 2 has exact same display and mediocre dpi as the Ipad 1. which I have. nexus 7 screen is way better. plus I won't take one bad review on the screen over the other countless ones praising it. there may be a few units out there with the color calibration off. but I'm sure majority of devices look fine, like mines. not worried about the comparison at all. I have multiple tablets and my nexus 7 looks good compared to others. its display is almost as good as my prime display(which was praised very highly). nexus 7 even has higher dpi than the prime. almost as much as the ipad3. nexus 7 display is better than the iPhone 4s so called retina display. this is based on dpi and how apple classifies a display being retina quality.
I'm very content with the Nexus 7's display with everything I've done far such as browsing, ebooks, movies, gaming, streaming YouTube, etc.
But now that I read about the issue all of the sudden everything has become worse so I'm going to RMA IT six times disregarding the fact that it's software correctable.

Iphone 4s has 326dpi, or about 110 more dpi than Nexus 7.

Dear OP,

According to Apple...

During their announcement today stated that the Nexus 7 "a scaled up phone experience"
(approx 1:58PM - Engadget's live blog)
hmm, never once did I ever feel that with my N7.
I just thought it was an arrogant statement, and kind of pissed me off.
meh, it kinda is. Having a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 7, they feel very similar.... mostly because they both use the Phone UI homescreen. FWIW I use Tablet mode on the Nexus 7 simply because it utilizes the larger screen space more efficiently and also lets my mind realize that I'm on a tablet and not my phone.
This is a skillet calling the kettle black, because iOS is EXACTLY the same on iPhones and iPads alike.
This is the same Apple spin that they've always done. "ProductXYZ is so awesome because ProductABC sucks". There is absolutely no credit or specifics given. Hence why we have iSheep... they just simply believe everything they say.
Realistically the iPad is no different then the Nexus 7. They both use the same phone interface but yield a few tablet specific apps. This is the same spin that say their, "Apple Mini is 30% larger then the competition [of other 7" tablets]". Yea but isn't the idea of a "mini" to be "mini". I mean the difference between 7.9" and a 9.7" isn't really that great.
Yeah, The iPad launcher is terrible. That's just a scaled up phone UI.
But quite like the phablet UI on the nexus 7, its more convenient than the tablet UI on a 7in Tablet.
There is starting to be more tablet-optimized apps for android now
Lolwut? He actually said that.. he does realize that the grid size of icons on the iPhone are exactly the same as on the ipad right? And thats something THEY create?... and hes saying the N7 is just a scaled up phone UI... WTF is wrong with this guy.. -_- . Least we have the option to use tablet mode or hybrid or whatever the hell we want...
I'm pretty sure he was referring to apps. Most third party apps on the Nexus 7 are the same as their phone counterparts - just scaled up. In comparison, many of Apple's third party apps are designed differently for the iPhone and the iPad. Unfortunately, at the present moment, he's right about this.
Ipad mini has lower resolution and ppi than our nexus 7.
Tell me something. Ipad mini screen is 7.9in. They claim its over 30% larger screen than our nexus7(7in.). Does a .9 screen increase really translate to it being more than 30% screen size over us?
They do have a rear cam though. So it has us on that. Plus it has same dual core A5 that was in original ipad2. It looks nice but I still love my N7.
You have to admit in the presentation they made the Nexus display to bezel ratio look bad. Makes me kinda jealous of the thin bezel on the mini. Perhaps 4:3 AR is a better fit for small tablets? Note that they didn't mention anything about pixel density, because it doesn't help them. Only saying XGA res is the same as iPad 2 and apps don't have to be rewritten.
I only hope Google will take a hint and perhaps offer hybrid/tablet mode options on stock launcher in the future, as the nav buttons on bottom doesn't make efficient use of screen real estate.
Im suprised there isnt a nexus 7 vs ipad mini thread already. :good:

Well the slides showing the comparison of the mini verses the nexus7 sure gave a lot better view on web pages from the mini. And it has a camera.
Considering that Android lacks proper tablet apps, it kinda is a scaled-up phone experience.
While I love my Nexus 7, I really miss iPad's app selection.

Android = More customizable to make it your own, Not locked into having to use any particular software for transferring media, can have many numerous options for icon layout per device.
Apple = Less customizable, more cloning, Locked into using iTunes to transfer media, uses the exact same icon layout regardless the iDevice
I don't mind Apple Devices, but by Heck their devices are slow - this coming from when I had to use an iPhone 4 when my HTC was being repaired......and also when comparing my Boss' iPad 3 to my Nexus 7....

I find the bezel on the n7 *almost* too small as it is. I fairly frequently overlap my thumb on the touch screen and I wouldn't say my hands are particularly big!
Any smaller/narrower would be a problem personally...

Honestly I really wasn't impressed with the iPad mini, seems a bit half assed. It's just an iPad 2 with a slightly smaller screen. The resolution is weak, and a they were bragging about a 4:3 aspect ratio... Ok? Is it the 90s again? The price is great... For an apple fanboy. From my perspective its pretty overpriced for such dated hardware. And with that aspect ratio and screen size is it really even smaller enough to have the convenience factor the nexus 7 has?
Sadly, it'll outsell our tablet just because of that apple logo. But I still can't think "is this the best you got apple?". It was pretty much their ego on display.

Personally I've always wanted the Nexus tablet to have a display somewhere around 8". I've had experience on the Asus eeePC 701, 7" netbook back in 2007 and I've always thought 7" was a bit too small for my taste. Of course this was with running desktop apps. But I just had to own Nexus tablet as it was just so tempting to play with. I'll just have to see what Google has in store for us on Oct. 29.

True it will sell cause of the apple logo. Like I told my wife I could put the apple logo on a leapfrog tablet for kids and call it the ipad 4 and dummies would be clamoring all over.
Yeah I figured they'd use retina and at least try to 1up the nexus 7s screen. I'll be fair in saying a 4:3 aspect ratio works in a 9.5 inch size but 16:9 seems perfect for a smaller tab imo. It was laughable that they seriously attacked the nexus 7 for its screen that had "less display area" in portrait mode. Really? Sure it does have less display but with its higher resolution and ppi everything will be clearer in that area.
Steve Jobs is rolling in his grave over this thing. It's so blatantly a "me too" product its pathetic!

What's the Xperia Z like as an eReader

Hi everyone,
I'm looking at returning my Nexus 7 (bought it a week ago) and getting the Xperia Z. Overall not happy with the Nexus 7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40300045#post40300045).
I only really use my Nexus as an eReader, and my iPhone 3GS is on the way out (and Im converted to android!).
So what's the Xperia like for reading on? I would want to use it a lot as an eReader
I use my ZL for reading but still orefer the Nexus 7 when reading for a couple hours like when I am on a flight. It is a matter of preferences.

Okay thanks. So it's not a dramatic difference though? How about battery drain whilst eReading?

I love reading on my xperia z, for me it's better than all my other previous devices, including the nexus 7 and note 2. The screen is large enough coupled with the 1080p display the text is very comfortable reading small text size just like in a real book.

Sounds good. Do you find you need to turn pages more frequently? Significantly quicker battery decline when you use it for reading?
What are your reasons not to buy a dedicated e-reader with e-ink? I have experience with big screen smartphones, tablets and also e-readers and reading is way better on an e-reader. The e-ink screen reads way different and a full battery works for months.
As for E-reader, I more likely want the Kindle Fire with the large numbers of ebooks at Amazon.com. Xperia Z should be good to be a ereader, but not perfect.

Kindle Fire is a tablet not an e-reader. It doesn't have an e-ink display so battery life will be nowhere near as long as proper Kindle e-readers.
As for the Xperia Z, I find that using white text on a black background make it a nice reader for when I'm commuting on the underground. Has the advantage of being able to listen to music on Spotify while reading and minimises the number of devices I need. I read about 1.5-2 hours total daily and the phone lasts throughout the day until I get home to charge it. The big display is nicer to read on than my Galaxy S 2 was.
Sent from my C6603 using xda premium
It's a great reading device as it has a great screen (very sharp) so it feels more realistic than e.g. qHD screens.
It's size is big as well, but not as big as a tablet or e-reader which imo is good if you are commuting and looking for privacy.
The drawbacks are the battery drain (the Zet's screen does drain a lot compared to low res displays) and the sunlight. However this screen (LCD) does a better sunlight job than other smartphone display technologies.
Obviously what you want is proper ebooks, preferably .epub files and a good reader, e.g. moonreader+.

The Z's lowest brightness is still very bright, if you're going to read in dark environments you won't like it.
I'd just get a real e-reader with an e-ink display. Just a regular Kindle or a Kindle Paperwhite. They're pretty nice. Or one of Sony's e-readers, they actually run Android (which can be fun if you root them and use the Kindle app)!

I'm using the XZ as an eReader with the Kindel app, and I'm very satisfied with the experience. To get full control over the back light, install Lux Pro from Google Play. Then you can lower the back light below the "stock" minimum level.
coming from the note 2 i'm not very happy with it as a reader as i read mainly in low light and the note had advantages of bigger screen, LED display which is much better with a black background (even at lowest brightness the XZ is pretty hard on the eyes), and battery life obviously (though thats a no-brainer when comparing to the note2 or a nexus7)
reading while in a bright enviorment is pretty good, but i don't see myself using this device as a reader outside the house with it's battery being a normal phones battery, especially since it's an lcd device and you can't minimize drain with a dark theme.
the difference between 720p and 1080p as a reader is pretty redundant on a 5inch screen IMO.

Well convenience mainly- I prefer to travel light and I feel I would probably benefit from it being waterproof (pools etc.). Also, don't want another device to keep track of.
Even though I've only had my Nexus a couple weeks, many time's I've left it at home thinking "I might not have time to read" or "i'd rather not leave it somewhere to get stolen" etc. Or just had to wait for something- got some random free time etc. You catch my drift I'm sure

I've got all the GoT books and Harry Potter books in ePub format with the reader Aldiko. I can turn the brightness down on the XZ itself, then on the app too. The screen is incredibly crisp, text looks amazing, even at night with the Night mode on, and easy on the eyes too. Battery drain is minimal, I could easily use it for a journey from London to NY, and it's the right size screen.
Then I can use the volume buttons to move backwards and forwards. Really love that.
Like the person above, I use Aldiko as well and it is good.
Also I use the comic rack to read comic books and I found that reading comics with the phone in a horizontal position is very comfortable. I can even read it with only one hand and use my thumb to swipe or touch the bottom right to change the page.
I would guess you can get 4-5 hours of reading time with the phone.
I really love the z as a e-reader don't use my e-ink device or my tab any more. For best reading experience set your app to "dark" so black page with white letters. Even in a darkened room it is not to bright to read and very comfortable (low auto brightness).
Today i read a pdf about Social Marketing. Moon+ said 1h. On my last hollydays i've read a lot books on my Sony Xperia X10i (ca..850x480) and Galagy Note 10.1" (1280x720). Has been too long ^^ Can't say i didn't like reading on my old device! But for a proper comparission i'de have to use both at the same time.

Aldiko's pretty good. Additionally, if you're rooted, another developer released an ago that syncs Aldiko to dropbox (books as well as page history).
Another option is to just upload all your pdfs and epubs to Google Play Books via the web. They just enabled this functionality a couple days ago.

Well I'm not sure. I don't know exactly how 4K works on here. Are you saying we can only access 4K via hdmi? It doesn't work on the device itself.

The product page on Asus says it's capable of 4K on the display with movie playback but CNET says it's only possible on the HDMI ouput to a 4k capable display. Only way is to view a 4K res vid... Would be a good time to test out the GoPro Hero3 Black 4K recording XD
I'm getting the tab as soon as best buy has it available in stores. Will test it out if no one gives feedback by then...

I can confirm the video logic does have 4K decoding support. Or at least it's the first SOC that is able to decode 5Mpix h264 streams from my IP cameras. The tegra3 and snapdragon600 fail horribly. It looks brilliant on the screen, no clue about HDMI.
How did you view the 4K? I want to test it myself. Thanks!

I do not understand your question. My post says literately what I did to test it. If you also have a video source (such as my IP Camera) above 1080p you can test it yourself.

Just look around for 4K material, youtube has a lot of it (but I do not know if the Android player supports it) but you should also be able to find some sample files you can download.
A good test would be: Sintel which was rendered native in 4K. Should be awesome, you can find a torrent with the 5GB here. Some other stuff you can find over here which they used to evaluate the Nexus 10 it seems.Downloads for that are here.
Last but not least, here you can also download some stuff. Now go forth and use the power of google to find more material! It's not that hard. Analyze the results and report back your findings!

I tested some of the movies listed above and they played back just fine. 4K Samples did and the TimeScape 2560x1440 preview also played back without a problem. Very nice quality! So yes, the Tegra4 can play 4K HD, I cannot test the HDMI port since I have no 4K display. But on the very high native resolution of the tablet it already looks very nice.

Ok, the torrent finished so I tried the Sintel movie. It's a full 4K movie and I tried playing it back with XBMC for Android which worked fine untill I tried to skip a part. But if you don't skip it plays perfectly. Using MX player it played fine and I was able to skip without problems.
So that confirms that this tablet (and the Tegra4) is fully 4K capable in hardware decoding h264. I saw bitrates up to 80Mbit without problem or skips.
Only thing this Tegra4 doesn't seem to handle is 1080p Hi10 anime rips because it cannot decode them by hardware. But since no other chip in the world can do this either, I guess I can hardle fault it at doing so. Software wise I think 720p Hi10 works, but 1080p Hi10 will skip frames.
When the Tegra4 comes out in 'HDMI stick' form it will make the ultimate media player combined with XBMC for Android! XBMC runs quite well on it, fast menu' s and everything.
Does TF701 capable of displaying high (4K) resolution photos and video on the screen?

Hey thanks,
I am trying to decide on Asus 701 and Samsung 10.1 2014 Edition and both have 2500x1600 resolution.
So, if the 4K content can be display on the Asus 701 with even this 2500x1600, then the picture quality will still be sharper than the 1920x1200 resolution, right?
But Asus can also use the microHDMI cable to export video or photo with 4K resolution to a larger external display device and that is good.
Frankly I have the 700 and I use the keyboard a lot and can be use for almost all of my needs during any trip. The spare extra battery pack, the full USB and the full size SD card slot is a plus for the keyboard dock and most people did not take these into account. Yes, I like the S Pen and I used it only once a while for screen cropping to be sent via email. That is good. Can you do that with the Asus 700 or 701?
BTW, a bit studder is fine for browsing for me.
Any suggestions or inputs.
Tx again.

Mine won't play 4k videos at all. It basically shuts the browser down. I've also just tried playing dead trigger 2 and had major frame drop and freezes.
Think I'm going to return mine to best buy and wait for something much better to come along.
My son is playing dead trigger 2 on his iPad air right now and it plays amazingly on it. I can't stand apple products. May have to try the fire 8.9hdx.

Hi,
I am not sure this is the way to reply and I just follow the prompts.
Can you be more detail "won't play 4K video at all"? Have you try to play 4k video from Youtube - the demo or test videos?
I also do not like Apple product for many reasons but their iPad is a great product with 4:3 ratio. Just need a replacement for my laptop like the Asus tf701. I have the tf700 now with key board dock which I used all the time to type and to replay my laptop. Just want the best display 2500x1600 for HD movies or higher. I can also see my photos better with higher resolution.
Torn between the new Samsung 10.1 and Asus 701. Prefer to have extra battery life of 4 added hours from the keyboard dock, full size USB for any hardware like mouse, backup USB Drive, etc; full size SD card slot (for micro SD card adaptor as well) and I can use the keyboard to hold up the tablet so it is like a stand as well.
The tradeoff is the S-Pen which could be used more often as I learn how to. The 4K HDMI output from the micro HDMI out port is a plus to connect my photo editing and video watching on a larger TV or in a hotel. Try to do than on iPad without memory card slot, HDMI out, etc.
Any suggestions or input that I should consider??

I got my tf701t today and I can confirm that it plays 4K (3840 X 2160) videos with the normal android player fluidly. I played a couple of 4K video demos from youtube including Sony, Samsung, LG and videos from personal users. The details are excellent and definitely sharper than FHD (1920 x 1080) videos.
