So, just keeping everyone up to date with the development on connecting the nexus 7 to the TV.
As we all know, since there is no hdmi/mhl support a lot of us have been looking at Miracast (a wifi-display technology) as the holy grail for this feature on the Nexus 7... Nvidia confirmed it is supporting Miracast in its Tegra 3 devices a while back, and nothing has really been heard since... Until recently.
Now the first devices to support Miracast are being announced, but there is no mention of the Nexus 7. Hopefully that will change when more devices get added.
Engadget reported on this the other day:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/19/wi-fi-alliance-announces-first-miracast-certified-devices/
And today netgear has released its first miracast 'reciever' devices:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/20/netgear-push2tv-neotv/
I dont actually own a Nexus 7, my girlfriend does. I really want one, but have been holding off in the hopes for either a way to connect the nexus 7 to the tv or for a device similar to the nexus 7 to come out, with added tv supprt. Because of that fact, im very interested in miracast and the possibility of using it with a nexus 7. so if anyone else finds any information on this. Feel free to post it in this thread
Was just going to post this. This is great news and look forward to Nexus 7 support soon.
AFAIK, Nvidia supports Miracast with Tegra 3, and Miracast was built on Wi-Fi Direct.
So, I'm guessing the Nexus 7 could be a Miracast Certified device.
Plus Nvidia did demo it.

Google or ASUS request certification.
Miracast certification is granted.
Vendor (Google) pushes update with Miracast support enabled.
No miracast?
How now i connect my nexus 7 to tv?

Nothing yet
I have emailed both wi-fi.org and nvidia, but no reply from either of course. I dont think theres one tegra 3 device to be on the miracast compatible list yet. so maybe nvidia are still working on the code or something... The did publicly announce their support for miracast though so it cant be long now....
so will this be added to Google tv or similar settop boxes? Will something like xbmc get support for this?

ESRlabs is working with the Nexus 7 and should have some news soon. They are using the raspberry pi as the interface to the HDMI video.

COOL! Just what I need. I hope I can use my N7 on the big screen soon.
Android 4.2 is going to have Miracast support, so hopefully when that is pushed to the Nexus 7 they add support. I don't see why they wouldn't as the Nexus 7 has the hardware and Google now has the license to use Miracast technology.

Is it confirmed that the nexus 7 has the hardware capabilities to use miracast technology? This would be great and would fix the only thing I don't like about the nexus 7.

I was wondering this. If it has miracast 32 gb makes sense so I can stream movies if not 16gb is all I need.

Anybody know the answer to this?
Read the official Miracast whitepaper for more info (attached below).
Miracast encodes content on-the-fly to H.264 and sends it to the sink (receiving) device. Therefore it needs hardware support for real-time OTF encoding. Nvidia has said Teg3 can be updated, but only for Miracast-certified devices.
Topology:

}
Constraints:
. Real-time H.264 encoding of 720p to 1080p, which exacts considerable CPU/GPU resources even with hardware acceleration. System performance and battery life will take a hit while using Miracast.
. Wifi connection of sufficient bandwidth to maintain sustained 720p/1080p output. This likely requires MIMO antenna and dual-band support, and probably HT40 mode. (Since setup is likely same-room, 5GHz's shorter range shouldn't be a problem.) This requirement likely excludes N7, given its 1x1 2.4GHz-only antenna setup.
. Per the topos above, devices can maintain the Internet connection separate from the Miracast connection on a single wifi radio. In practice, this may be problematic given the large bandwidth req for the Miracast connection alone. You may need have content onboard or USB-connected when using Miracast, not streamed through wifi or Internet.
For the TV side, you need a Miracast-capable adapter. Intel's recently announced WiDi 3.5 now supports Miracast, which isn't yet supported by existing WiDi adapters. As an indication, look at Netgear PUSH2TV HD PTV2000, which is a prior-gen adapter (the next gen should be cheaper and smaller.) Read the Amazon reviews for info on performance & setup issues.
http://www.netgear.com/home/products/hometheater/media-players/PTV2000.asp
http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-PUSH2TV-PTV2000-Adapter-Wireless/dp/B004SBEVSY/
I guess I'm gonna wait for a cheaper Miracast adapter to become available. $100 seems pretty expensive for its functionality IMO
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Intel WiDi has been around for awhile, but v3.5 was announced only a month ago, as was the Miracast announcement. WiDi is proprietary, but is Miracast-certified, so can be considered a superset. Given Intel's sway for laptops, you can likely find WiDi 3.5 adapters easier than Miracast adapters. Likewise, you can look at WiDi's performance specs as a proxy for Miracast.
Per Anandtech:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6312/intels-widi-35-much-faster-usb-miracast-support-and-new-receivers
"On the performance side Intel is promising 60ms latency for WiDi 3.5 when used with an Ivy Bridge based system (250ms with Sandy Bridge) and a 2nd generation (or newer) WiDi receiver. Later this year we'll see an updated Netgear Push2TV WiDi receiver that's a lot smaller with a starting price of $59.99."
From the Miracast press release:
http://www.wi-fi.org/media/press-re...splay-has-arrived-wi-fi-alliance®-launches-wi
"The first products to be designated Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast, and which form the test suite for the certification program, are:
* Broadcom Dualband 11n WiFi
* Intel® WiDi
* Marvell Avastar USB-8782 802.11n 1x1 Dual-band Reference Design
* MediaTek a/b/g/n Dualband Mobile Phone Client, MT662X_v1 and DTV Sink, MV0690
* Ralink 802.11n Wireless Adapter, RT3592
* Realtek Dual-band 2x2 RTL8192DE HM92D01 PCIe Half Mini Card and RTD1185 RealShare Smart Display Adapter"
We can also add Nexus 10 to the list.
So Nexus 7 need only software update(android 4.2) to support Miracast? Or it hardware issue?

I know there is no MHL - even tested to be positive and it doesn't work - however, wondering what other options potentially exist for screen mirroring to a TV?
Not interested in DLNA (I've used Skifka/similar and it's good) but I want to mirror so I can stream anything from the N7 (games, Hulu, etc.) to my TV.
Thanks!

Does it support Hulu or other streaming services, or just media that's on your local device? If the latter then it's the same as DLNA/Skifka.

if you have a Roku hooked up to your TV already, there are separate channels for things like Hulu and Netflix. You would stream to Roku direct over wifi from internet, not through the android device. The Roku juice channel and application just enables you to stream media from the android to the TV through Roku. I have only tried it for pictures, and not with Jellybean yet at all. I doubt it works unless the media is located on your android. I can test tonight when I get home, I'm at work now.

I am not sure if it will even support WiFI Direct Display mirroring as has been demoed on the OMAP 4 series chipset. As, that was one of the advantages the OMAP4 had over the Tegra 3. In either case we haven't seen a lot happen with that either.
Just an update to my post, I tested the Roku juice demo on the nexus 7, it seems to work for local media and had a podcast option I didn't know what to do with. But no streaming of games.

You would install Plex server on a PC, and the Plex media channel on the Roku, and/or Plex media app on the android device. With this setup, you could stream videos from your PC, or from the Internet (if using Internet channels like Hulu) to either the Roku, or to your Android device. The Roku uses your wifi network, android devices can use wifi or cellphone data.
If you are trying to stream a video saved on your android device to your TV, then you don't use Plex. You would need Roku juice installed on the android and on the Roku box too. Note, I only tried this with their demo app, which is limited to the first video and I did not see the Transformers video in the list. I don't know if that is a demo limitation, or if the Roku juice app can only stream videos you record on your android device.

i do know the tegra 3 is miracast capable i dont think i can post a link so ill just post what i found, this is dated july 27 2012.
Nvidia, a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, announced that it's supporting the new Miracast WiFi-Direct based protocol which is expected to launch by the Wi-Fi Alliance within the next few months.
For the uninitiated, Miracast will be an open standard, so any mobile device or display manufacturer will be able to implement the technology. It will also be a direct competitor to closed eco-systems like Intel's WiDi and Apple's AirPlay which enable users to wirelessly stream videos and games to external displays.
There are also other open standards for streaming media such as DLNA, but these are plagued with interoperability issues that have limited their traction in the market place. To address the limitations of these solutions, the Wi-Fi Alliance created its upcoming open wireless display standard called Miracast.
"Underpinning the Miracast specification is Wi-Fi Direct – a specification defined for peer-to-peer, direct wireless connectivity between devices," Nvidia said on Thursday in its whitepaper. "Miracast Certified devices will be able to connect with each other directly, without the mediation of a wireless access point, by leveraging the functionality introduced by Wi-Fi Direct. When two devices connect with each other directly, one assumes the role of the source (transmitting device) and the other becomes a sink (the devices receiving and rendering the content to the user)."
Nvidia said that it has developed a Miracast wireless display stack that is Tegra 3 optimized and can be integrated into the Tegra mobile platform. This source-side solution enables tablet and phone OEMs to implement a Miracast certifiable product by combining the Tegra application processor and compatible Tegra Android BSP package just as they do today.
"The Tegra optimized Miracast solution is comprised of two major components – the multimedia (video/audio) processing block and the industry compliant wireless display networking stack," Nvidia explained. "The multimedia processing block takes advantage of Tegra’s multi-core graphics engine and dedicated hardware video/audio codecs to accelerate the decoding of video content, render graphics surfaces and perform the final compositing operations before encoding into a H.264 bit stream to be wirelessly transmitted."
We are miracast certified, however there needs to be an app to activate this tech for us, I believe, but if they have the set top box, chances are there's an app for it, too.
All I can say is, yay! Step in the right direction. -Ara

That's how you play full hd shows/movies/music with no dramas its been around for ages. Best part is wd keep updating the firmware so it plays anything I throw at it.
Gaming well you can't do that but if you can't see the 7" screen right in front of you well you'd probably find it more beneficial to invest in glasses.
It also has some other benefits too, bubble upnp is one of the best things I have come across.

Got it. I didn't see the video.
So I am assuming this is the first TV Box(similar to like a Roku or something) that allows us to wirelessly display our Nexus to our HDTV? That's what I am seeing. Also it's only in Germany at the moment.
But the question is, do our Nexus 7's natively support something like this? I am assuming this needs development, like an app or software update.
Any news on this?
Not sure I see the point of this. I already have a WD Live that can stream all my video from my PC to my TV. Why would I put video on my N7, then send to my TV when I can just send it directly to my TV? Even the 16 GB N7 can maybe just barely hold a decently encoded movie at full 1080p. I just don't think I have any content on my N7 that cannot be sent to my TV in an easier, higher quality way.
Edit: Been thinking about this. Seriously, what do you use it for? The only thing I could come up with is letting your friends watch you play a game on the tablet or something. Every other scenario I can think of has a better solution.

It's not only for videos. I have a tf101 transformer and used it to give presentations at the university with HDMI out. The point is to mirror the screen content of your device and not only play back media.
And it looks promising with the low latency.

Emulation Gaming. Plug your tablet up to the TV and use a PS3 gamepad for true retro couch gaming.
I don't stream movies and such, as I'd rather just watch them off the device.
I'm curious about this as well.
Here's some more info about it that I dug up from arstechnica.
In most cases, Miracast can be implemented in software alone, Robinson said. It has a head start, because Android already supports WiFi Direct since version 4.0 . But hardware modifications will help optimize devices for the type of compression, decoding, and encoding Miracast equipment will have to perform, he said.

I've been watching for (complete) Miracast solutions for a while now. This capability is already starting to play a big role in education on the iPad courtesy of AirPlay mirroring. I have no idea why other vendors are sitting on this.
Anyway, the NTV200S is supposed to be compatible with a firmware update. Some more info here:

Another big feature that miracast will add is the ability to display your phone's display on your tablet. This way you could always be on your tablet, but at anytime access all the features of your phone.

I went to the verizon store in Malone NY and they didn't have the lapdock 100 but I was able to try my Atrix HD in a Bionic Lapdock.
Simply put, the lapdock is a 12 inches HDMI monitor with a USB hub speading the AHD micro USB port to 2 full sized usb ports, the keyboard and the trackpad.
So it turn your phone into a large screen netbook Under android ICS... with 4g lte connectivity.
It was just fine without the heavy webtop app. Specialy for 49$
The bionic lapdock was still at 129$
By the way, all the lapdock, exception made for the 500 model, are dumb device. Any smartphone or device with hdmi out and usb out can be connected to the motorola lapdock. ( including the mk802 android stick or the samsung galaxy series)
How's the resolution, I dont think you got the lapdocks native 1366*768, did it look blurry? And was it edge to edge?

Well I didn't have a lot of time to play with the dock in the verizon store and still waiting for mine but other people reported that various hdmi devices will do it in 720p resolution. That would leave 24 pixels on each side of the screen. You can google "lapdock hack" to see what people are doing with it.
so this is what it must look like ? click for bigger.
its a galaxy nexus with 720p screen and soft buttons.
It should do good once the dpi gets set to ~20 lower...
did the keyboard and touchpad work ?
By the way, if you set dpi to a certain value, ICS will switch to tablet mode, and it will almost be the same as webtop mode, maybe the atrix2 launcher works too, for smaller icons... if you are interested, maybe we could figure something out.

I already have a MK802 Android Stick that I use as a HTPC

here is a xda member using his AHD to a lapdock 500
the thread pretty much cover it all
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771033
anyway, HDMI mirroring of a 720p phone screen is just perfect and still better than my 7" tablet.
Got the lapdock for the 4g. The keyboard is just amazing, screen is perfect, I just use the overscan setting on the atrix hd to match the screen resolution and fill it completely. I had to flip the lapdock connectors as Stated in various post on lapdock vs razr. Easy job, perfect results. I use the chrome browser and it just work as it should be.
Very well invested 50 Bucks
Edit: only the lapdock for the atrix 4g need to have the connectors flipped. The bionic, the lapdock 100 and the lapdock 500 just fit out of the box.
Lapdock : the pictures
I would say this lapdock is just brilliant. It's very well made, surprisingly thin and lightweight.
From now on, all my cell phones will have to be able to use this accessory (hdmi out and usb out)
I don't care about the lack of webtop app, ICS android just do it as a tablet.
then again, it is fast. thanks to the dual core cpu/gpu. In my specific usage, the Atrix HD + Lapdock is faster than my atom 270 Netbook under Ubuntu 12.04
lol its upside down, huh... is it really bad for the wifi signal ?
do you have a setting for settings>input>pointer speed ?
if so, i recommend you set it 1 or 2 notches higher
when connected, you can switch in settings>sound> from hdmi audio to phone speakers, the lapdock speakers are pretty(very) horrible...

The lapdock speakers are OK, you can pump up the volume on the cell phone AND you can pump up the volume on the lapdock (it is really just an HDMI monitor with separate volume and brightness settings)

damn, on the atrix2 only one can work at a time...
I can't wait to get my AHD, about one more month and im set
Atrix lapdock used commercialy
I had to use the lapdock with a customer.
it just beat the laptop hands down.
As I always keep the pictures/videos/pdf on the sdcard, it's a lot faster on the atrix than booting up a laptop..
So I just chose the video on the AHD, docked the phone and pressed PLAY and instant video !!
this was just impressive !!!
Heard it is compatible with this device. How does it work and where can we see samples of it, working on the TF701T?

Just to clarify: Are you speaking about 4K HD output via hdmi? If so, I could test this function this weekend and upload a video later.

Well I'm not sure. I don't know exactly how 4K works on here. Are you saying we can only access 4K via hdmi? It doesn't work on the device itself.

The product page on Asus says it's capable of 4K on the display with movie playback but CNET says it's only possible on the HDMI ouput to a 4k capable display. Only way is to view a 4K res vid... Would be a good time to test out the GoPro Hero3 Black 4K recording XD
I'm getting the tab as soon as best buy has it available in stores. Will test it out if no one gives feedback by then...

4K support
I can confirm the video logic does have 4K decoding support. Or at least it's the first SOC that is able to decode 5Mpix h264 streams from my IP cameras. The tegra3 and snapdragon600 fail horribly. It looks brilliant on the screen, no clue about HDMI.
How did you view the 4K? I want to test it myself. Thanks!

I do not understand your question. My post says literately what I did to test it. If you also have a video source (such as my IP Camera) above 1080p you can test it yourself.

Just look around for 4K material, youtube has a lot of it (but I do not know if the Android player supports it) but you should also be able to find some sample files you can download.
A good test would be: Sintel which was rendered native in 4K. Should be awesome, you can find a torrent with the 5GB here. Some other stuff you can find over here which they used to evaluate the Nexus 10 it seems.Downloads for that are here.
Last but not least, here you can also download some stuff. Now go forth and use the power of google to find more material! It's not that hard. Analyze the results and report back your findings!

I tested some of the movies listed above and they played back just fine. 4K Samples did and the TimeScape 2560x1440 preview also played back without a problem. Very nice quality! So yes, the Tegra4 can play 4K HD, I cannot test the HDMI port since I have no 4K display. But on the very high native resolution of the tablet it already looks very nice.

Ok, the torrent finished so I tried the Sintel movie. It's a full 4K movie and I tried playing it back with XBMC for Android which worked fine untill I tried to skip a part. But if you don't skip it plays perfectly. Using MX player it played fine and I was able to skip without problems.
So that confirms that this tablet (and the Tegra4) is fully 4K capable in hardware decoding h264. I saw bitrates up to 80Mbit without problem or skips.
Only thing this Tegra4 doesn't seem to handle is 1080p Hi10 anime rips because it cannot decode them by hardware. But since no other chip in the world can do this either, I guess I can hardle fault it at doing so. Software wise I think 720p Hi10 works, but 1080p Hi10 will skip frames.
When the Tegra4 comes out in 'HDMI stick' form it will make the ultimate media player combined with XBMC for Android! XBMC runs quite well on it, fast menu' s and everything.
Does TF701 capable of displaying high (4K) resolution photos and video on the screen?
Does TF701 capable of displaying high (4K) resolution photos and video on the screen? I understand that it can output 4K material to an external 4K display but how about display 4K material on its own screen? Just to make sure. Tx

Hey thanks,
I am trying to decide on Asus 701 and Samsung 10.1 2014 Edition and both have 2500x1600 resolution.
So, if the 4K content can be display on the Asus 701 with even this 2500x1600, then the picture quality will still be sharper than the 1920x1200 resolution, right?
But Asus can also use the microHDMI cable to export video or photo with 4K resolution to a larger external display device and that is good.
Frankly I have the 700 and I use the keyboard a lot and can be use for almost all of my needs during any trip. The spare extra battery pack, the full USB and the full size SD card slot is a plus for the keyboard dock and most people did not take these into account. Yes, I like the S Pen and I used it only once a while for screen cropping to be sent via email. That is good. Can you do that with the Asus 700 or 701?
BTW, a bit studder is fine for browsing for me.
Any suggestions or inputs.
Tx again.
Michael
Mine won't play 4k videos at all. It basically shuts the browser down. I've also just tried playing dead trigger 2 and had major frame drop and freezes.
Think I'm going to return mine to best buy and wait for something much better to come along.
My son is playing dead trigger 2 on his iPad air right now and it plays amazingly on it. I can't stand apple products. May have to try the fire 8.9hdx.

Hi,
I am not sure this is the way to reply and I just follow the prompts.
Can you be more detail "won't play 4K video at all"? Have you try to play 4k video from Youtube - the demo or test videos?
I also do not like Apple product for many reasons but their iPad is a great product with 4:3 ratio. Just need a replacement for my laptop like the Asus tf701. I have the tf700 now with key board dock which I used all the time to type and to replay my laptop. Just want the best display 2500x1600 for HD movies or higher. I can also see my photos better with higher resolution.
Torn between the new Samsung 10.1 and Asus 701. Prefer to have extra battery life of 4 added hours from the keyboard dock, full size USB for any hardware like mouse, backup USB Drive, etc; full size SD card slot (for micro SD card adaptor as well) and I can use the keyboard to hold up the tablet so it is like a stand as well.
The tradeoff is the S-Pen which could be used more often as I learn how to. The 4K HDMI output from the micro HDMI out port is a plus to connect my photo editing and video watching on a larger TV or in a hotel. Try to do than on iPad without memory card slot, HDMI out, etc.
Any suggestions or input that I should consider??

From the tegra 4 TRM
This is from the Technical Reference Manual at tegrazone. To get this 2663 page document, you need to register. This has been typed by hand, as copy is disabled.
25.1.1 Output Capabilities
- 1 or 2 captive panels on two 4-lane DSI channels, operating either independently for 1 or 2 panels, or ganged together as 2x4 for a single panel.
-- Maximum panel size of 2560x1600 @ 60 Hz using 2x4-lane ganged DSI channels
-- Independent resolution and pixel clock when not ganged
- 1 External Display
-- On HDMI. Maximum 1920x1080p @ 60 Hz (stereo or not)
-- On HDMI. Maximum 4096x2160p @ 30 Hz
-- With HDCP and multi-channel audio
I got my tf701t today and I can confirm that it plays 4K (3840 X 2160) videos with the normal android player fluidly. I played a couple of 4K video demos from youtube including Sony, Samsung, LG and videos from personal users. The details are excellent and definitely sharper than FHD (1920 x 1080) videos.
Does Chromecast support exotic resolutions like the 2560x1080p for 21:9 screens or 4K? Which HDMI-Version is used in Chromecast?

With a rooted Chromecast it should be possible when someone optimizes the resolution selection during HDMI handshake - how well it would work with casting is a another question. (I intend to try this as I'm running the Chromecast on a 1366x768 display).
While it could probably display at those resolutions there is no way the WiFi could handle those streams to make it work.
The maker of the SoC is known, there should be technical specs on their site. I think the SoC is several years old and was developed as a FullHD multimedia device, and nothing more.

Pretty sure it's HDMI 1.3 or 1.4
4K won't happen unless it's at 30p (which is poopy)
But mostly it's designed for standard televisions, so I doubt there is any testing or attention given to resolutions that aren't 4:3 or 16:9 720p or 1080p Heck, given the number of times support for 720p devices has been broken, I don't think they test on anything other than Full HD 1080p.

Apparently it displays everything at 1080P being it's highest Res, But can display 4K content as they have software that renders 4K content @ 1080P.
So it can play the content but it downconverts it to 1080P for display.
http://www.marvell.com/digital-entertainment/armada-1500/qdeo/
Okay, there's not much in terms of numerical specs to see in the product brief. The upper limit is the HDMI 1.4 spec, but below that, who knows?
Apart from limiting fps, you could use interlacing, or omit sync signals usually needed by crts only. This was necessary to display 1080p, 1200p and 1600*1200 via single link DVI, upon which HDMI is based. But probably the HDMI's link speed is higher, so you could go beyond DVI limits.

Depends on the monitor. Chromecast sends out a video signal on HDMI, not a computer signal, so unless the monitor accepts 1280x720 or 1920x1080 it probably won't work and you'll need a device to convert it. You could use a HDfury Nano GX or similar, but that would cost more than the Chromecast itself and closer to a new 1080p monitor.
If it's a 1366x768 projector or one of the early 720p televisions, or the display has native HDMI and supports HDCP 1.x, then it might stand a chance of working, but in general, unless that monitor is really special, it's probably not worth the trouble to try to make it work. If you already have a Chromecast you can try it though, it won't hurt anything.
Could you please answer which HDMI version Chromecast Ultra has? I have not found any information that there is exactly HDMI 2.0. And 4K 30 FPS is supported with HDMI 1.4.

This forum is Chromecast 2012, the original model.
It's HDMI 1.x and not HDMI 2.0, supports only up to 1920x1080 resolution.
You might try asking in Google Chromecast (2015) - maybe someone there knows, but generally speaking non-standard resolutions are not of interest to mass-consumer devices - dealing with them requires more than just supporting the actual output resolution/rate, but involves have the applications handle the scaling for different aspect ratios as well, which is extra programming for little/no reward, not to mention extra testing/QA.
