I have the Motorola Droid currently running the latest version of Froyo and I am really interested in rooting it. But, unfortunately I have the latest Froyo and I can't root that. Does anybody know how/if I could downgrade the software to the original Froyo release os even 2.1? I have a Mac running Parallels so I'll take PC or Mac suggestions. Please be specific if you wanna help me. I'm new to all of this. Thanks in advance!
This link will walk you through the process.
Root Droid 1 Regardless of OS version
Just to make things clear, you can use that to root the latest Froyo build. It is what I used to root my device as well.
Thanks! Everything looks great but I can't seem to get my device to show up in RSD Lite. Any suggestions?
got honeystreak rc 2.1 on my dell streak 7 and i have no clue how to get clockwork recovery on it with honeystreak, so when i get rom manager and flash clockwork it works, then i reboot into the original recovery then i choose software upadate.pkg then when i click it nothing happens it just has the dell logo then it just powers up like it normally would so i cant get clockwork i need help!!!
CWM and Honeystreak are not compatible.
Same thing happened to me, the root was easy with gingerbreak, had root so I could run rom manager and flashed that to the clockwork recovery and backed up. Installed honeystreak using the nvflash and didnt like the instability of it so I wanted to go back but didnt realize the way back was another nvflash the breaks the device and then you have to recover from the cwm back up. I returned it at that point.
I've learned some more about nvflash since then, it seems its the official way they install the os's to the tegra devices. But without the official install files needed for your device, it has to be rigged. Which is why the honeystreak is unstable and the flash back to stock is broken and has to be recovered from a back up.
Windows, ubuntu are such easy installs compared to android. Everythings on a disc(that you can setup on a usb stick), there arent 14 or how ever many separate files you have to download(for the nvflash). And it just starts the install, you dont need separate program to install. They really made the process needlessly complicated for installing android.
I just find it hard to believe, non developers have to RELY on the hacker community to perform fresh(or not so fresh) installs because google/the middlemen dont provide installation media. Oh wait they provide the source code... which if your not a developer is no help to the uninitiated that just want a clean install, install newer versions.

Its possible to get cwm(the app) ON honeystreak. What doesnt work on honeystreak is the clockwork recovery boot up menu as you have noticed yourself. Dont ask me why, I dont know. And the only current "fix" for it is to nvflash to stock where the clockwork recovery boot up menu works.
I have an open question for anyone, does clockwork rom manager work properly on honeycomb and thereby make the problem isolated to honeystreak? Or does it not work properly on honeycomb at all.
Honeystreak requires NVflash to install because it completely repartitions the nand.
nandroid depends on knowing ahead of time what the partition layout is, it's not gonna work if it'd different depending on what rom is installed.
If someone made a HC compatable clockwork it wouldnt be compatable with the stock rom either
so when the official honeycomb comes out for the dell streak 7 will clockwork mod actually boot up correctly?

When clockwork rom manager is updated to work on HC it will work... thats what I understood from his post, considering the partition layout is different on HC from previous versions.
There needs to be a partition editor and usb/sd card install-able android media like with ubuntu/windows too do away with these crippled ways of doing this. This modern os cant even perform the basics of installation that desktop os's have performed for a decade?. Maybe when Ice cream source code comes out, this is exactly what someone will do. Til then this is ridiculous. They have so hamstrung the ability to control the os on your hardware. What good is open source software if they control how it gets on the hardware. This is not a methodology I would support.
I'll have to see how windows 8 is handled on arm hardware. Might be the only os you can install and update on your own without the hassle. Or I just wont buy any arm devices and stick to flip phones and laptops for mobility.

The only reason the HC builds all require repartitioning is because they're based off system dumps form other devices. As the majority of the source isnt available the only way to get them to work is to make the device more closely resemble the donor rom device instead of making the rom more similar to the reciving device.
If/when HC lands it's either going to use the 2.2's partition map or require a pc to install that has a streamlined version of nvflash bundled. The only thing that would happen if users were able to manually repartition devices is seeing the rom completely break and require a un-repartitioning as android is hardcoded to take a specific partition layout, as device makers have the source they can change the hardcoded values.
Being able to repartition would be more akin to being able to shuffle around the layout of your pc's bios more then being able to repartition windows. There's no generic version of android (nexus devices might be considered generic, but nexus roms wouldnt boot on any other device anyway), it requires it to be ported to a specific device to work. you COULD play around with your bios to the point that you can shuffle stuff around but unless you had a good reason to there's no point.
Being Linux based, I would like to see Android loaded as modular as opposed to monolithic, and then the device manufacturers could simply release open source modules for their hardware. Of course, maybe this would slow things down for processing; but I'd really like a simple way to just port the OS on any device. This would be a great boon for the open source community.
could it be pssible to port over clockwork from another device to this? or is the only way to flash it
The original clockwork is a port, there would need to be 3 versions total to cover every rom:
2.2
3.1
3.2
as the HC roms are based off multiple device dumps and neither are compatable with eachother
Hey folks. I'm having a fun time figuring out the ins and outs of my first Android device, the Rogers Captivate.
I had a really educational experience flashing to Firefly to try out something other than what Rogers gave out. I have Firefly running quite nicely and I like what it can do.
One thing I wasn't able to figure out was why I had so much trouble with installing the drivers on my Win7 machine. They always failed to install properly, and it confused me to no end. I still can't do it properly.
What I'd like to do is flash to the newly released 2.3 Gingerbread release for my phone from Rogers, but I can't get Kies to recognize the device. Kies then tries to reinstall the drivers, and it fails. I know I can do this through alternative means, but I'm concerned why the drivers keep screwing up and why Kies won't isntall them.
I'm guess I'll probably need to flash to stock and move forward. Any thoughts?
Kies won't let you upgrade if you're not running a stock version, so I believe you'll have to flash to stock first and then upgrade through Kies.
I also believe there is an odin flash for 2.3.3 posted in the general section somewhere. Check it out in this post
Not sure if that's your problem with Kies not recognizing the phone (I think it is), but you can definitely flash to 2.3.3 without it.
Successful upgrade to 2.3, No Data Connection
Alright, I've got 2.3 installed successfully, and it runs quick enough, but I have no data access although it shows that I should.
All my apps seem to be crashing on startup due to this, but I did everything factory, to my understanding.
I'm also going to have to root this puppy in order to get Titanium working, so I'll look for that info myself and give an update here when it's fixed.
Not sure why I'm not connected still though.
So, as this is my first post on XDA I'd like to first state that I am somewhat new to the rooting scene. I used to have a DX and rooted it with no major problems. I know this is probably best suited to be posted in the Developement section, but I currently dont have premissions to do so. I would like to make sure I have everything I need and a clear understanding of the process before I attempt to root my D3.
As a precaution I would like to comfirm that their is a current .SBF file that can be used to return the phone to stock should I do something stupid during the root process? I have found the following link on this site with a .SBF file but from reading the threads I cant determine if this will return the D3 to stock:
[Recovery] RSD v5.5.0 and 5.5.184 (aka 5.6.890) fastboot partitions/flashable zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255198
Can someone confirm/verify if this will return my D3 to stock should I need to?
Also within this thread their is mention of Moto-Fastboot and something abbreviated as abd (i think). I am not familiar with either of these. Could someone also provide a breif explanation of what these are and their importance to the .SBF process?
I am also planing on using the following otpion to root my D3:
[Guide] one-click root for Droid 3 (and others) [UPDATED 9/8/2011]: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1240130
I want to say that I read somewhere that I have to download the SU.apk from the market place? Is this correct or does this option one-click process display the SU icon in the app draw as the z4root one click option did on my DX?
Also I know that I need to purchase/download the D3 boot loader file from the market plac, I think? Is there anything else that you would recommend that I download/purchase to ensure I dont brick my phone in the process?
Sorry this is so long, but thank you in advance to those that provide responses/suggestions/comments to my questions.
Yes, there is a fully functioning sbf available for the D3
Yes, that is the sbf that is needed. To actually use the sbf you will need rsd lite, which i also believe to be in that post with the sbf.
This sbf will indeed return your phone to fully functioning stock in the case that it should be needed. (i've had to do it my fair share of times)
ADB is a command prompt interface that allows you to interact with the files on your phone without having to go into something like root explorer.
Fastboot (power + vol up + vol down) is a pre boot menu that allows you to boot into different things (like the AP fastboot mode needed to flash an SBF or to go into recovery). To flash an sbf you need to connect your D3 to the computer (in computer mode, i think), and choose the xml file that is in the SBF after you've extracted it.
The one-click root allows you to root your phone hassle free
When i say this, I mean that it installs the Superuser.apk and pushed the busybox and su to the system/xbin, which is needed for some different processes that require root.
here is the link to the most updated version of the bootstrapper, which allows recovery to be entered through the power-off (by using the bp tools option in fastboot)

smoshim, thank you very much for your assistance and explanations. I already have RSD Lite on my computer and actually meant to include that in my original post. I had it on hand for when I rooted my DX just incase. I did need to use it once but it wouldnt recognize that my DX was connected for some reason. So I had to use a disck based linux program to SBF my DX when I sold it. Hopefully, RSD Lite doesnt give me any issues should I need it for my D3. Well, It's almost 2 am here in Omaha and I need to get my sorry tail to bed. Gotta be up in 5 and a half hours to get my 3 boys out the door for school. I have been patiently waiting to root my DS as I wanted to be sure that all of the "kinks" have been worked out and also wanted to try out some custom roms. I loved the darkslide rom for the DX. In your opinion do you think I should also go ahead and download/install rom manager?
honestly, rom manager doesn't have much available for the d3 yet. it'll be more productive right now to just manually drop the ROMs into your sd and boot into recovery.
And, in my opinion, the roms that we have out now are awesome. And as people get impatient they're making more and more themselves. So even though there may not be too many to choose from compared to some other devices there are more and more coming into the works all the time. But it sounds like you know what's going on, and the sbf process is pretty painless if you're already familiar with rsd on your DX
As simple as possible, here's my situation: Two days ago I rooted my LG Revolution, which was running 2.3.4 before I rooted it. Everything went well!!!
Few hours later, i was tethering, then as I came back to my phone I saw it had restarted and that Verizon had sent out an OTA update (which I selected CANCEL to, btw). My phone restarted again and I lost root, plus my phone went to 2.3.6.
I tried to reroot again on 2.3.6, but the oneclickroot batch file didn't root it this time (permissions were denied when trying to push files and use the chmod 777 command). I later tried the manual process, but still not luck.
PLEASE, SOMEONE HELP!!! I WANT ROOT ACCESS TO TETHER (WIRELESS) FOR MY NEW IPAD.
This is being discussed all over the Development forum and this one. This newest update has not bee rooted yet.
Short answer you can't re-root yet.
Wow, do you know if I can backup to 2.3.4
Download the .TOTS. Just go back to v7 gingerbread and reroot. Put cwm on even if you don't need it. It will prevent your phone from updating because it's not the stock bootloader.

Could you, please, post the instructions (step by step) on this: how to revert back to the previous version, flash CW, and how to root again? Will this work on the LG Revolution, and does this disrupt my 4G, which is something i read about in another forum?

This crap FREAKIN' SUCKS!!!! I CAN'T GET ANYTHING TO FREAKIN' WORK!!!!! This is stupid!!! I can't go back to 2.3.4 because I can't get the components msi file to install, nor could i get the VS910.dll file to install either. Even did research on the situation and found that people using 65 bit OS were having problems, so i used my windows 32 bit OS computer and STILL GOT THE SAME BULLCRAP!!!!! THIS IS FRUSTRATING

CAN'T MOVE BACK TO 2.3.4 BECAUSE I CAN'T GET A DANG THING TO WORK. First, the components msi file wouldn't install because of some error code, plus i could never get VS810.dll to register. Even did research online, and found that people running 64 bit os were having trouble, so i used my 32 bit os computer BUT STILL DIDN'T WORK ... BEYOND USING A 32 BIT OS, I FOUND NO SOLUTION ON THE ENTIRE WORLD WIDE WEB TO GET THIS TO WORK!!!!!!!

i was able to keep root on my ota 8
i just used lg1click to reinstall stock recovery ran the update and used Super1click to push the Su/superuser.apk and everything works fine. Dont know why so many people are having issues with this
for you to update and keep root. start here
install stock rooted v7 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348637
make sure your in usb debuging mode and plug into computer (win7 64 bit is ok) then select internet connection mode
Run lg1click/install drivers and option 5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348557
reboot and go to settings/aboutphone/softwareupdate/checknow and update phone
When finished rebooting run super 1 click and click root http://shortfuse.org/?page_id=2
when finished with that open Titanium backup or install trial from market when opened it prompts to fix SU access just tell it ok and reboot

Thanks, finally got it to work. I did a serious, hardcore internet search and found that i needed to turn down my user account settings, which was preventing my 64 bit machine from installing any harmful software. Wow, that was crazy. Anyway, i'm looking for some cool roms and themes to go with my rooted and CW LG Rev, now.
Any suggestions?
MT just released a one click root method for ZV8 so the process should be very easy going forward. it does require being on ZV7 though....if you have already upgraded to unrooted ZV8 you have to downgrade back to ZV7 to get root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566729
Currently there are no ROMs (or themes I believe) for ZV8...MT should have a GV update ready pretty soon though!
So right now if you want to use a custom ROM you have to downgrade back to rooted ZV7.

I'm actually running ZV7. I had to donwgrade from 2.3.6 (due to an OTA), so now i'm running 2.3.4 again (which, i believe, is ZV7, correct?). I'm looking for something really cool, and sleek, like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990233&page=1083
to make matters worse....
Don't want to be the bearer of bad news here but I in fact have cwm and gingervoltrom 2.0. whiel the update did not succeed it has been causing my phone to go freaking haywire. I'm not sure why our what's up. I can't even prove that's it's not a issue with 2.0 since that I also recently updated to. I used can that I had way before the Verizon update to install this though.
Complete LGNPST Package and tot files
Currently there is no direct way to regain root in ZV8, however in this post ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566729 ), the excellent mtmichaelson shows us a way into a kind of workaround for those who MUST regain root under ZV8. It involves flashing back to ZV7 first and sometimes finding all of the necessary files to do the flashing can be a chore. That's why I put them all together in one file for anyone who wants to download and try mtmichaelson's workaround. I AM NOT responsible for anyone bricking their Revo, so use this at your own risk. Here is the torrent file :
