[Q] How is google now running on your Jelly Bean i9000's? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey people,
I recently installed Google Now on my i9000, which is on ICS 4.0.4 and running Cyanogenmod. However, it turned out to be kind of laggy. It just didn't function very fluently, so I decided to remove it from my phone again after about a day of use. By not functioning fluently I'm talking GUI, cards would bounce into my screen instead of flying in :b.
So I'm wondering, is Google Now working (by that I mean no lag) fluently on your JB phones? Some of you have already installed Jelly Bean on their devices, and I'm assuming you guys and girls are using Google Now on it as well.
I'm thinking of going to Jelly Bean as well, mainly because of project butter and Google Now. However, if our poor i9000 isn't able to provide a lagless Google Now experience because of outdated hardware, I'll just wait a few more months until more stable JB ROMs are out. So, how's your experience with Google Now on JB, on the Galaxy S?

Are you finding any lag while using the phone?
And, anyone else?

Galaxy Note, stock ICS question.

I'm posting in general forums because I need to have everyone in on this.
Eventually, when ICS with bloatWiz is released, will we be able to craft a AOSP or AOKP, FULLY functional because of kernel and such? I recall on Galaxy S II, there were loads of issues on other gb roms, than stock with sammy framework. :/
I mean, will we be able to get ICS running, crystal, on this device? Or will we encounter same stuff, such as lower music volumes on headsets and all that good stuff? Damn, I miss ICS from my Nexus Prime.
Anyway, cheers guys.

Really just need the kernel from Sammy. With that, most bugs can be ironed out.
Right now, the kernel is responsible for all the stupid SODs, etc.

Yes, we need a stable rooted ICS kernel for imilka to produce his magic.
But we'll also need the ICS source code IMO, mostly because of the possible driver issues. If Samsung delivers the code as quickly as they did for SGSII (within days of the official ICS release), we're away.
Noob Question Alert: Tablet mode?
Hi,
apologies for the thread hi-jacking.
with the chinese leak available at the moment, does tablet mode work properly? without systemui fc?
also, Out of AOSP, AOKP and ICS Stunner, which has the most refined tablet mode for daily use as a phone?

I'm using Stunner ICS 4.2 in tablet mode (213 DPI) with no problem.
I've been using since day 1 and I'm loving it!!!
Only drawback is the keyboard, that doesn't hide the bottom bar, and makes typing more difficult since I'm not used to not having the keyboard starting at the bottom of the screen.
Other than that it's the perfect interface for the Note's big screen

No, system UI crashes at boot so no clock and most important no notifications. And also Samsung stuffs look very bad...
AOSP and ICS Stunner both work great
Just define 213dpi in build.prop as superfuffo said

will rooting a phone
rectify some bug or phone problem?
like that of no incall audio on regular phones?
skype to pc calls has audio so i think its more of the call app problem...
will ICS be able to fix that?
or will other roms fix that?

I'd love to help you, but what do you mean? If a phone is supposed to do anything out of the box, it will do it. If it doesn't it's hardware or application conflicts. - A root will not make the phone do something, in itself, the root is to install othere applications and alter system and such. - Your exact problem, I don't understand. :/

Jelly Bean on I9000...why bother?

What are the benefits of installing JB on an i9000?
I'm aware the FM radio on JB doesn't work and some other function too....then, it seems that all the sleek design of the new ROM will slow CPU speed - surely, is it worth bothering to install the latest ROMs on near outdated smartphones like the i9000?
I've stumbled on the JW4 stock and represent a worthy alternative to Gingerbread 2.3 - then for the sleek look I'm considering some themes....
Have I missed some relevant facts about the JB 4.2 on the i9000? Right now, I wouldn't bother.

For as far as I know, Cyanogenmod never really got Project Butter off the ground on Samsung devices running Exynos processors, like the i9000. I'm running 4.1 Cyanogenmod as well, and it does seem a tad more smooth, but I've no idea if that's because of Project Butter, or just the fact that it's a very nice android version.
I've just tested JB 4.2....nice and sleek look but not Swipe and what happened to my external SD? no "My File" is found so I can't search...no wonder when I check Storage on Settings gives me an error. The Camera also seems very limited (have I missed something?).
Exactly as I initially thought....
All this hype to get the latest ROMs are mostly superficial fads with no substance - good only for greedy developers and bored teenagers in search of new trills to impress their mates - nah, I like using Swipe and FM radio (and searching my files) - back to JW4.

Yeah. They came up with a neat intuitive interface with 4.2 but stripped out so many features. Honestly who in the right mind thought it was a great idea to get rid of the timer option. I used the 4.2 camera for about a day before I just rolled back to the 4.1 camera
You're comparing a ROM that's barely even alpha. Try CM10 4.1.2 stable. That will give you a better idea of what cyanogenmod is capable of. And you can still install Swype. I'm using it right now.
And don't be a troll, it's not very nice
CM10 powered by Mackay kernel

So what's the intention of this thread then?
Try Mackay ROM or CM10. Both are stable and fluid and you will be happy with them. But if you don't even know how to install Swype you should probably stick to stock.

Android jelly bean is fantastic because it is faster and smoother. To solve the problem of radio you should download spirit fm radio light that is NOT a streaming app, but uses the FM radio receiver installed by Samsung on Galaxy.

in fact I've bothered to install swype by myself - never had to do before the "upgrade"?
An upgrade should include all the best functions - swype represents in my opinion the best way to input text - go figure why the developers forgot about it.

ok, if the FM radio isn't lost then this might save the bacon...the future is radio via data or podcasting but when traveling abroad it might be useful to use FM radio to save data roaming (and power too).
I've tested 4 new ROMs (in 2 days): aosp, aokp, xbean, cm10 - the camera has lost many functions - still, the Galaxy doesn't even offer a flash - so, no big deal there.
The JW4 I'm using right now seems faster than any of the JB tested, but I agree about the new ROMs being smoother and more stylish.
The DSP on offer might be worth upgrading...
There are too many new functions which are a bit too geeky and many customizations are a bit OTT (reminds me of some linux distros)...so, I might be tempted to opt for Slim Bean (jelly bean without the fat)....still, I'll wait a few months
no videocall facility
I belive the custom Roms not support videocall fascilty, (correct me,If I am wrong). But rest everything is OK in JB Roms.
I have tried more than 4 ROMs including latest 4.2, None of othem having videocall button not integrated with .
But there are improvements in audio & video perfomance compare to Stock GB ROM.

Can JB camera save to external SD? Try saving HD video on limited 8 GB internal storage
U should try "c-rom Mix v8" or "mckay rom build158 or 161,in my opinion its the two best roms available in JB,in McKay's build there is a small difference in smoothness between the two builds..
C-rom v8 is my favorite,its d... good
Just Because...
Because we can. You, good sir, are asking the wrong question..LOL Why wouldn't you want the latest version of android on existing hardware? It is like having the best of both worlds. New Software, same phone.
Imagine putting windows 8 on a 486, and having it run smoothly. That will never happen.... with android on the other hand... okay, perhaps a little exaggeration there, but you get the idea. (Unless you are to young to remember a 486,)
For me personally, it negates the need to buy a $500 - $600 phone, just to have the latest version of software.
I do however, understand your point of view. I hope that I have answered your question thoroughly.
My swype on 4.2.1 works fine. I do have an sdcard 0/1 bug. I consider that perfectly acceptable, in this scenario.
Panorama camera feature is neat. Although it is not something that I can see myself using a whole lot.

I think the choice belongs to everyone to flash JB...or not.
I tried but i'am back on GB with the sauRom V2. The BEST rom ever flashed on my phone ! ! !
I have tried Miui, Cyanogen, Ics, JB...... None of those roms compares to SauRom in my opinion.
Really worth a try ! Smooth, fast, stable, Very good battery life ! !
Since i'am using it, no need to flash anymore !

Jelly Bean on slow nand device

Howdy,
I tried a jelly bean rom yesterday. It was a horrible experience, it was laggy, slow, and almost unusable. I had to go back to an ICS Miui that I was happy with. I have a question as to if there is a way to figure out why it was so horrible. I tried CM 10 but no major change in what happens. Anyone have any suggestions for me? Id like to run somehting a bit newer as a couple of apps want me to go forward to run properly. Trash if its been discussed. Thanks
I9000 jelly bean is not perfect because of it's slow memory. For example i9001 has faster memory, and it's almost like official jb
Sent from my GT-P5100 using XDA Premium HD app
i would disagree. my i9000 has that old, slow memory and it runs on jelly bean without any problems. yeah, jelly bean requires more ram, and most of the apps are more demanding, so when you multitask, it can be an issue. but again, it can be solved, with a bit of tweaking.
my phone is on slim bean 4.2 rc2 and semaphore 2.9.10s. i freeze all system apps which i don't use or need. it runs lagfree and without any problems, and i can even multitask with cca 4 apps without slowdowns.
Thanks. I just dont know why it was soo terrible, my friends phone which is with in 30 phones of mine according to the serial number, runs without a hitch. Mine was unusable. Ill just wait a while to see what becomes of things rom wise. Hoping to try a couple builds to see if it goes tits up again or not.
Maybe you didn't flash it correctly? Cause that's strange, I've got the old nand (or moviNAND) i9000 and all Jelly Bean ROMs run almost lagless. Of course there are some laggs when scrolling the menu for the first time or closing a big app, but everything else is just butter. Try doing all of those wipes and formats before flashing

Slow nand here and jelly bean, running buttery smooth. Maybe only a 2 or 3 seconds of lag when I close a game like dead trigger or something.
I think jelly bean could be as far as the gt-i9000 goes though, skeptical about KLP running nice on it. Lucky I got an N7
I only had the money to get an n7 because this phone is still good. And that's thx to the devs.

[Q] Regards to GB to JB

Hey guys
Just wondering, how would I go about upgrading my samsumg S i9000, currently on gingerbread, to jelly bean?
I've read some tutorials and such, and they ramble on about 'ROMs'. Are these legit Jelly Bean firmwares or are they mimic version? (by mimic version, I mean did they just make their own like-a-version of JB)
What are the risks in doing it?
And what are the advantages in doing it?
What is the battery life in comparison?
Will I be able to revert back to GB if JB is too hardcore for me?
I have also read that once rooted, I may need to backup everytime an app is installed (Something along these lines) and that rooting should only be done if you are computer-pro.
So, if I installed JB and really liked it, would I be able to 'unroot' it so that it is almost like factory settings but with JB?
Cheers fellas
(Sorry about all of the questions)

Hey there,
So. All of your questions shall be answered
ROMs
The Galaxy S I9000 only received an official 2.3.6. So every Jelly Bean firmware you see in these forums aren't legitimate stock Samsung roms, more rather custom ones compiled from Google's code source. It is proper Jelly Bean, but not from Samsung- more rather adapted and custom-built for the Galaxy S. (I'm not quite sure the wording's right, but it makes more sense in my head, so I apologise in advance if this confuses you)
Risks:
-Bricking. There are quite a few problems that cac occur, but that's if something goes catastrophically wrong. Most problems are easily fixed, hard-bricking- which only really occurs if you flash a file made for a completely different device- is rare. Sticking to the tutorials means you won't run into many problems.
Advantages
-Speed. Many of these custom roms are optimised to maximise the speed and performance of the single-core in the I9000.
-Features. So many new features come with upgrading to Jelly Bean. Google Now, expandable notifications, lockscreen widgets are just a few of many.
-Customisation. Themes, apps, mods, you name it, there's a whole swathe of them.
Battery life
-JB relies on hardware acceleration to be buttery smooth. Pushing 60fps animations on a single-core processor, as well as other processes, do take a toll on the battery. On JB roms you'll probably notice a drop in battery life- provided you don't make any changes. There are many things you can do to improve your battery life though, so don't fret too much.
Reverting
Of course you can. There's many guides to help you through this as well (not to mention I do it quite often LOL)
Rooting/unrooting
Rooting is actually pretty easy to do. There are apps that let you root straight from your phone. You don't need to be a computer pro in order to root and install custom roms. I'm not that great with computers myself. You don't really need to backup every time you install an app. That's more of a precautionary measure, but you don't really need to do it. I don't quite see why you'd need to either.
As for unrooting... This isn't possible because the root in the Jelly Bean roms are essential for some things such as recovery to work. The system itself in some roms require root, mostly for customisations such as tablet mode and other nifty mods. In 4.2 roms though, the Superuser (the app that grants/denies root permission) is built into Settings so its quite non-invasive, and in 4.0.x/4.1.x you can hide it using launchers (even the stock launchers).
Hope that answers all your questions sufficiently! Just send back a reply if you want any extra info.

Wow yes thankyou so much!!
That actually helps a lot.
Would the same things apply to Ice cream sandwhich? (Battery thing - I've read that ICS conserves more battery than JB?)
Would you recommend me upgrading up a new OS. (Given that warranty is probably out by now)
Cheers

What you've heard about ICS is right- Project Butter is purely a Jelly Bean thing. ICs does conserve a bit more battery- potentially quite a bit if you're a conservative user. ICS is still really smooth though.
The big downside about custom ICS roms compared to Jelly Bean is the lack of features. Developers, being the extremely talented people they are, have added so many new features to Jelly Bean- Halo, Per-App colour and DPI, PIE to name a few, as well as the ones already in Jelly Bean such as Google Now, lockscreen widgets and expandable notifications.
So if you don't mind not having some of those features (there are still lots and lots of mods for ICS), then its really up to you whether you want ICS or JB. Otherwise everything else I've said pretty much applies.
As for recommending- Its personal choice. Stock Gingerbread does have advantages over ICS/JB and vice-versa (hence why I stay on it most of the time). However personally if you're looking for speed and performance as well as more features/apps available to you, definitely upgrade.

Android 4.2 or 4.3 for gaming?

Hi all guys, I'm asking myself which version of android is better for gaming purposes. Is better 4.2.2 or 4.3 for our device?
I tried both i don't notice a change. I'm gonna try KitKat i will edit post
Does someone have problem while playing modern combat 4 online? I mean if someone have lags playing online. Especially when you are near an enemy. I hate this problem, we have a tegra 3 chip and we have these problems?! I can't believe.
Hi, i tried new unofficial cm11, and i must say that im really impressed.. on 4.0.3, 4.1.2, 4.2 and 4.3 nova 3 wasnt playable i tried almost everything to make it run smoother, with this cm11 it really runs smoother
I'm flashing kitkat atm, but from my experience, 4.2.2 is faster than 4.3 by far.4.3 got system services that use a lot of CPU (unnoticeable while not gaming, but gives lagspikes if you are gaming). Also some apps like NFSMW FCs in 4.3 so I'd go with 4.2.2.
Thank you very much! I'm going to try 4.2.2. I'll write here my impressions.
Which ROM 4.2.2 is better? I mean the more stable.

I find 4.2.2 more stable.I don't think we even have a RC on CM 10.2 (am I wrong?)
Also you get screen orientation bug in 4.3 and some apps FC more often.
Just go with 4.2.2, trust me and click thanks if I helped
every 4.2.2 is stable actually. But I personally liked mokee most. It has nice features at no performance cost. Cm is stable too.
