I apologize up front if this seems like a stupid question, but I want to know the right way....
Can someone verify that the instructions I found for switching ROMs are accurate for Safestrap 2.x?
I found this on DroidForums and cannot post the link:
15) Download the ROM of your choice to your SD card. For more information see step 13 above.
16) Restart your phone. At the SafeStrap boot screen, press the menu button to enter recovery.
17) Verify that "Safe System is: ENABLED".
18) Go to "backup and restore" and make a backup. I recommend backing-up everything including the webtop and unsafe system. You can save the backup to internal or external SD card according to your available storage and personal preference. The backup will be saved in \Safestrap\Backup.
34) Select "++++Go Back++++" to return to the main recovery menu.
35) Go to "mounts and storage" menu and format \system.
36) Now hit "+++Go Back+++" to leave mounts and storage, and go into "Install zip from sdcard". DON'T GO TO "apply update from sdcard".
37) Go to "choose zip from sdcard" and find the ROM .zip file. DON'T GO TO "apply /sdcard/update.zip".
38) Now hit "+++Go Back+++" and hit "Wipe data/factory reset" and then also "Wipe cache partition".
39) Now go to the "Advanced" menu and "Wipe dalvik cache".
40) Finally, hit "+++Go Back+++" to return to the main recovery menu and select "power off". Wait for power down to finish, then restart your bionic. Be patient, the first boot takes unusually long.

There is no webtop for the Droid 3, but so far all looks good. I never backup the unsafe system, since it just takes up room and I have a good backup of the unsafe system already. (I believe that it is called "original system" and not unsafe system.)
34) Select "++++Go Back++++" to return to the main recovery menu.
35) Go to "mounts and storage" menu and format \system.

This is fine, but should be unnecessary. Any good custom ROM will format system before it starts copying files. However, it won't hurt.

If you "Wipe data/factory reset" there is no reason to "Wipe Dalvik cache" - the /cache partition is formatted as part of "Wipe data/factory reset". That said, again, it won't hurt...
39) Now go to the "Advanced" menu and "Wipe dalvik cache".

COMPLETELY unnecessary if you did the Wipe Dalvik cache in the previous step, and really not at all required if you did "Wipe data/factory reset". I'm not quite sure why people think that wiping something once misses something so it needs to be done more than once?
40) Finally, hit "+++Go Back+++" to return to the main recovery menu and select "power off". Wait for power down to finish, then restart your bionic. Be patient, the first boot takes unusually long.

Yep, except, of course, you will restart the Droid 3.
MMS on JB (10/01) on XT862
MMS on JB (10/01) on XT862 doesn't seem to be working... otherwise the build is fairly stable.

This hasn't happened to me yet, but the question just occurred to me I have a nandroid backup with a ext3 partition for my apps. If my ext3 partition got formated ie. I don't have an ext3 partition just a whole fat32 sd card. If I tried to restore from the backup would it fail since I don't have the ext3.
theres a very simple solution for this. I actually just ran this process on my brother's phone today because he was still using some old rom that isnt supported by its developer anymore and he got a new SD card that he needed to transfer apps onto.
BACKUP PROCESS:
1. install amon_ra's revocery v1.2.3
2. nandroid backup
3. select the "go to console" option
4. hit enter at the console to get the # propt, then type "utility" (sans quotes, of course) to enter the utility menu.
5. select the "back up apps from ext3 to fat" option
6. select the "return to recovery" option
7. select the "enable USB mass storage" option
8. copy the entire contents of the fat partition to your computer. (note: since you just backed up by nandroid and the utility console, this backup on your computer now has not only your system files, but also your apps! you should do this on a regular basis anyway...you know, unless you like losing files.)
9. select the "disable USB mass storage" option
...time goes by...
-insert here: whatever the hell happened to your phone to mysteriously format the card to only fat32
RECOVERY PROCESS:
1. boot to recovery
2. select the "go to console" option
3. at the console, enter for the prompt, then "utility"
4. select the "partition sd card 3 partitions" option and run through the partiton process. after this is done, your fat32-only card now has fat, ext2 and swap.
5. select the "return to recovery" option (if the utility console doesnt pop back up, simply enter "utility" again to bring it up) and proceeed to the next step OR select the "return to console" option and enter "upgrade_fs" and then reboot to recovery and go forward with step 7.
6. select the "convert ext2 to ext3" option
7. select the "turn on USB mass storage" option
8. remember that backup you made on your computer? put it on the card.
9. reboot to recovery (the utility console wont work without a rebbot if you've done the "return to recovery option")
10. select the "go to console" option
11. enter for prompt, then type "utility"
12. select the "restore apps from fat32" option
13. select the "return to recovery" option
14. nandroid restore (make sure correct roms are flashed if you did the old switcheroo)
15. reboot.
and VOILA, your phone is completely restored to the state it was in under 5 minutes.

Wow this will help MEE!! so basically when you do the recovery process..thats when you throw in the new sd card? if i have a sd card already parted with the three partitions i can skip steps 4-6 right and just proceed with the steps? Also is a nandroid backup needed if im just switching cards and not the roms?
Hi,
Currently I know three ways to make Nexus One a factory reset:
1. Through menu in the Android system, Settings->Privacy->Factory Reset
2. In the HBoot (Press Volume down when power on), select 'Clear Storage'
3. In the recovery menu, select 'Wipe Data/Factory Reset'
My questions is, what's the difference among all these ways? Or they are just the same?
I have googled and searched the forum but got no answer.
Thanks.
1. Clears /data/ = personal data/settings (keeps rom intact) http://www.google.com/search?client=ubuntu&channel=fs&q=factory+reset+android&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
2. Sounds like it wipes the sdcard, never used it http://www.google.com/search?client=ubuntu&channel=fs&q=hboot+Clear+Storage&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
3. Clears /data/ and /system/ = wipes every internal storage partition. http://www.google.com/search?client=ubuntu&channel=fs&q=amon_ra+recovery&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
I have a hard time believing you searched...
Oh man, you know that search results != answers.
Anyway, thanks for your reply.
So it's safe to do 'Clear Storage' in HBoot, and 'Factory Reset' in system menu. But doing a wipe in the recovery will damage your system, unless you want to flash another ROM. Right?
Many people suggest do 'Clear Storage' in HBoot when problems happen, so I doubt it is the same as the first method.

No...It's also safe to do a factory reset from Recovery. That's the cleanest option according to the other guy's post. I always thought Factory Reset was the same through the settings menu and recovery, but I could be wrong.
Re: For those having market problems
For those of you having trouble with the market on the 0.6.8 by Brian here is the newb step by step. Mine works great. These are Brian's instructions with my additions. Very simple and has worked on all 3 of my Nooks. Flawlessly!!!
Instructions:
Download the zip file
Unzip the image file
Burn the image to sdcard
Shutoff your nook and insert the sdcard you just created
Boot your nook to sdcard
Under the "mounts and storage" menu, choose "format cache"
Press the power button to go back to the main menu
Choose "install zip from sdcard"
Choose "choose zip from sdcard"
Choose the zip file
After the image is installed, remove the sdcard
Press the power button to go back to the main menu
Choose "reboot system now"
Go into applications
Manage applications
Chose market
Clear cache not data
Now reboot with the 3.0.0.5 Version of clockwork
Choose mount
Reformat cache
Reboot again
After the nook has reboot
Configure the wireless, setup your google account
The market will now work
Install Flash and YouTube
BTW Brian FTW Great work, I like your setup the best
I have .902 running, all stock and rooted. I was install Eclipse rom. But I formated the /osh by accident when I was supposed to format /system.
But I also formatted /system too.
So I'm in the safe boot menu and not sure what to do here.
Step 22 is what I screwed up on.
Can I continue, should I do a restore?
Thanks

21) Now hit "+++Go Back+++", and go to "Safe Boot Menu" and then "Toggle Safe System". Safe system must be enabled before continuing. Don't skip this step.
22) Go to "mounts and storage" menu and format \system. Not as scary as it sounds.
23) Now hit "+++Go Back+++" to leave mounts and storage, and go into "Install zip from sdcard". DON'T GO TO "apply update from sdcard".
24) Go to "choose zip from sdcard" and find the ROM .zip file. DON'T GO TO "apply /sdcard/update.zip".
25) Now hit "+++Go Back+++" and hit "Wipe data/factory reset" and then also "Wipe cache partition".
26) Now go to the "Advanced" menu and "Wipe dalvik cache".
27) Finally, hit "+++Go Back+++" to return to the main recovery menu and select "power off".

Hi, I didn't want to start a new thread and didn't want to post in the development forums, but I was wondering how does one do a full wipe?
I really don't want to threadjack either, but just thought that seeing as how this was a recent thread maybe someone could shoot me a quick answer...
I found this:
2. Reboot your phone into ClockworkMod Recovery (CWM)
3. In CWM "Wipe data/factory reset"
4. In CWM "Wipe Cache Partition"
5. Go To "Advance"
6. Select "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
7. Go To "Mounts And Storage"
8. Select "Mount System"
9. Then Select "Wipe System"
from this thread, and was wondering if all these steps are what one means by a full wipe, or just some of them~ and, if just some of the steps, which ones?
TIA
Issue resolved ..
- Did a full wipe and installed sharp rom using SUTL
- Replaced recovery.img in download mode
- flashed AOKP ICS 8.0
-Flashed CK Kernel
On this setup for last 12 hours without any issues till now ..
Thanks again for this forum and all your help

You don't need point 8, rest everything follow to fully wipe

If you do step 3, no need step 4 and 6. Dalvik cache is in data partition and doing step 3 will also followed by wiping cache partition automatically by CWM.
And I never do step 7, 8 and 9. When we flash a rom, system partition usually been wiped by the script, except some roms which intended for upgrade.
