Nandroid with Ext3 Partitions - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This hasn't happened to me yet, but the question just occurred to me I have a nandroid backup with a ext3 partition for my apps. If my ext3 partition got formated ie. I don't have an ext3 partition just a whole fat32 sd card. If I tried to restore from the backup would it fail since I don't have the ext3.

theres a very simple solution for this. I actually just ran this process on my brother's phone today because he was still using some old rom that isnt supported by its developer anymore and he got a new SD card that he needed to transfer apps onto.
BACKUP PROCESS:
1. install amon_ra's revocery v1.2.3
2. nandroid backup
3. select the "go to console" option
4. hit enter at the console to get the # propt, then type "utility" (sans quotes, of course) to enter the utility menu.
5. select the "back up apps from ext3 to fat" option
6. select the "return to recovery" option
7. select the "enable USB mass storage" option
8. copy the entire contents of the fat partition to your computer. (note: since you just backed up by nandroid and the utility console, this backup on your computer now has not only your system files, but also your apps! you should do this on a regular basis anyway...you know, unless you like losing files.)
9. select the "disable USB mass storage" option
...time goes by...
-insert here: whatever the hell happened to your phone to mysteriously format the card to only fat32
RECOVERY PROCESS:
1. boot to recovery
2. select the "go to console" option
3. at the console, enter for the prompt, then "utility"
4. select the "partition sd card 3 partitions" option and run through the partiton process. after this is done, your fat32-only card now has fat, ext2 and swap.
5. select the "return to recovery" option (if the utility console doesnt pop back up, simply enter "utility" again to bring it up) and proceeed to the next step OR select the "return to console" option and enter "upgrade_fs" and then reboot to recovery and go forward with step 7.
6. select the "convert ext2 to ext3" option
7. select the "turn on USB mass storage" option
8. remember that backup you made on your computer? put it on the card.
9. reboot to recovery (the utility console wont work without a rebbot if you've done the "return to recovery option")
10. select the "go to console" option
11. enter for prompt, then type "utility"
12. select the "restore apps from fat32" option
13. select the "return to recovery" option
14. nandroid restore (make sure correct roms are flashed if you did the old switcheroo)
15. reboot.
and VOILA, your phone is completely restored to the state it was in under 5 minutes.

Wow this will help MEE!! so basically when you do the recovery process..thats when you throw in the new sd card? if i have a sd card already parted with the three partitions i can skip steps 4-6 right and just proceed with the steps? Also is a nandroid backup needed if im just switching cards and not the roms?

[Q] Simplest way to Nookie Froyo

Sorry for the stupid post but I would like to move on from a basic AutoNookie Eclair set up to Froyo. I get a bit worried reading the How-To's though as I found the initial rooting process terrifying as it was.
Can you guys clarify what the simplest way to get Froyo on the EMMC. I have HC on an SD card and its cool to look at but essentially useless for what I am after at the moment. Currently running a very buggy Eclair. Froyo would be sweet.
Thanks for the heads up.
- Power off the Nook completely
- Remove any SD card you may have in it
- Insert the SD card you burned
- Plug the USB cable into the computer
- Plus the USB cable into the Nook (this will auto-boot the Nook from the SD card)
- Once CWM boots up, go into "mounts and storage"
- Select "format data" (wait for it to finish)
- Select "format system" (wait for it to finish)
- Select "format boot"
- Press the power button to go back
- Select "install zip from sdcard"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard"
- Select "froyo-emmc-0.2.zip"
- Confirm your decision
- Let it finish (it will tell when it is done)
- Press the power button until you are at the first CWM screen (should say "reboot system now" in first option)
- Remove the sd card
- Select "reboot system now"
- Important: Let the Nook boot up completely. I typically refrain from touching it until the display turns off after boot-up
- Unlock the Nook
- Unplug the USB cable from the Nook
- Power off completely
- Insert the same sd card again (the one we've been flashing from)
- Plug in the USB cable and let CWM boot up again
- Select "install zip from sd card"
- Select "choose zip from sdcard"
- Select "googleapps.zip"
- Confirm your decision
- Let it finish (it will tell when it is done)
- Press the power button until you are at the first CWM screen (should say "reboot system now" in first option)
- Remove the sd card
- Select "reboot system now"
- Important: Let the Nook boot up completely. I typically refrain from touching it until the display turns off after boot-up
- Unlock the Nook
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
does this require me to be back to stock or can I do it fine running from Eclair.
Also, will I maintain the apps I have already installed.
Thanks for that reply. Brilliant.
First off, I purposefully left these instructions vague. Please just use this guide as a starting point for what you must learn about. ALOT of reading of the development forum is a requirement, going into this without fully understanding each step is foolish. If done wrong you will cause yourself all kinds of headaches, though producing a brick is hard but not impossible.
You will lose all of your data on the nook color. You will lose the ability to start into clockwork mod(from EMMC) and make/flash recoveries(does not work with froyo).
I am no android developer, nor do I claim to be one. I'm just relaying what I've learned, and has worked for me in the past, from these forums. I'll answer questions to the best of my abilities, but please keep in mind that Froyo IS buggy.
K, here we go.
Easy way is the flashable cwm image located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938200
Backup eclaire rom then reset to factory default
1: Install Rom manager
2: Flash clockwork mod in Rom Manager
3: Reboot into recovery
4: Create backup of rom(stores on sd card)
5: Wipe data and reset to factory default
turn off
Burn froyo image onto SD card
1: Download winimage (assuming windows)
2: Run as administrator
3: Disk -> restore virtual hard disk image
4: Select SD card
5: Select image to flash
Flash Image
Flash to EMMC
1: Put froyo sd card into nook and boot
2: Clockwork mod will start
3: In "Mounts and Storage" format boot, then system, then data
4: Go back(pwr button) and select flash zip from sd card
5: Select Froyo image
wait for completion
Once Flashed and boots
1: If SD card does not mount replace vold.prop with nookie Froyo 5.8's (A fix is curently being worked on)
2: Install Gapps via instructions here: http://www.nookdevs.com/NookColor:_Nookie_Froyo_Tips
3: Install OC kernel, instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10903913&postcount=233

[Q] Restore to stock -- stuck!

Sorry -- this is probably a silly question but I can't find the answer anywhere.
I need to do a full factory reset. When I do the 8 boot failure option, however, on the 9th boot it goes into clockwork recovery -- where I do a delete user data and factory reset (from the Clockwork menu). Once I reboot (and have to register again to get past the B&N process) I'm still rooted -- or at least I still have Superuser on the Extras menu.
I'm thinking I somehow need to get past Clockwork to do a true reset????
I'm also trying to do this, and having the same problems.
I used adb to set the 8 boot failure and got the boot failure screen as well. I followed the method from the 'restore to stock' thread (which you probably should have posted in, instead of making a new thread) and used the hardware buttons to wipe the rest. I also had some apps left like SU left over. Also I was on 1.0.1 which I manually put on (when I had a booting loop into clockwork (my own fault)). My NC came with 1.1.0, so the restore to stock didn't bring me back to what I bought the nook as.
That 9th boot attempt is supposed to re-image the system partition... having CWR installed on the internal memory must be interfering with that process..
If you want to go back to stock without root files or anything.. try the following -
*NOTE* You must use CWR 3.0.0.5.. 3.0.0.6 will format the partitions as EXT 4, which the stock OS and kernel do not support.
Here are the steps -
1. Download CWR for SD card .7 from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922870 (choose a size appropriate for your sd card)
2. Download Nook Restore 1.01 from this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690
3. Image CWR onto a sd card using WinImage if you're in windows or dd if you're using a mac or linux (In WinImage, you'd go to disk>restore virtual hard drive to physical) give it your sd card reader's drive letter and choose the image you downloaded in step 1)
4. Copy Nook Restore 1.01 from step 2 onto this SD card and eject it from your PC
5. Power off the Nook Color and insert the sd card into the slot
6. Power on the Nook Color and boot into CWR
7. Go to Mounts and Storage
8. Format System and Data
9. Go back to "Install Zip from SD Card on the previous menu by pressing the power button
10. Select "Install Zip from SD Card" and then "Choose Zip from SD Card" * If you get an error, you need to go back to mounts and storage and mount the sdcard*
11. Choose Nook Restore 1.01 and wait for the installation to complete
12. Go back to the main menu and choose wipe cache
13. Power off the Nook Color
14. Remove the SD card
15. Power on the Nook color
The nook should boot into the stock OS and ask you to go through the initial setup process again.
Hope this helps.

Simplified instructions for flashing "HC v4 eMMC 2nd ed" ROM

After successfully getting HC running on my NC, I recently helped a couple of co-workers do the same on theirs. In the process, I came up with a set of instructions that worked great for each of them, so I figured I'd share.
Please note that these are just a simplified version of what appears in the original thread here: [ZIP][DEV][ROM] HC v4 eMMC 2nd ed. - Flashable ZIP {02/21/11}. All I did was put all of the pieces together into one list.
Requirements to follow these instructions exactly:
2 GB microSD card for flashing the ROM
Another microSD card for everyday use (I refer to it as "your 8GB sdcard" below)
Linux workstation
Basic familiarity with linux command line
Here goes:
Delete any existing partitions on your 2GB SD card. An fdisk -l should show just /dev/sdx, no partitions (e.g. /dev/sdx1).
Download the 2GB bootable SD card image from here:
http://legacyschool.us.to/nookdev/clockwork/0.1-ext4/2gb_clockwork-0.1-ext4.tar.gz
MD5SUM:
598262de35053f2d34480175ac337d7c 2gb_clockwork-0.1-ext4.tar.gz
Decompress that file and dd the resulting "2gb_clockwork-0.1-ext4.img" to your 2GB sdcard. (The dd target should be /dev/sdx, not /dev/sdx1.) This is the card you'll use to flash images, recover from "bricked", etc. You'll only want to have this in your Nook if/when you want to boot from this card. Leave this sdcard connected to your computer for now -- you'll be copying a file to it shortly.
Download the HoneyComb installation zip from here:
http://www.multiupload.com/47M6MIFS9A
MD5SUM:
ac42f8ca2d04e15b8981593e60b0abc1 HC-v4-emmc-2nd-edition.zip
DON'T unzip HC-v4-emmc-2nd-edition.zip. Just copy it over to your 2GB bootable sdcard. Feel free to create a new directory for it; just remember where you copied it.
You're done prepping the 2GB card now. Unmount it, pop it into your Nook, and reboot the Nook.
When it boots, you'll be in ClockWorkMod recovery (CWM). This is where you install/backup/etc various ROMs (and sometimes applications). Navigate through the various menus using the up/down volume keys on the side of your nook. Press the "n" button on the front to execute whatever you have currently selected. Press the power button on the side to go "back".
In CWM, navigate to "mounts and storage". Format each of these:
/system
/data
/cache
Also in "mounts & storage", make sure /system and /data aren't mounted. (If you have the option to mount them, that means they're unmounted; and vice versa.) In the same way, make sure sdcard IS mounted.
Go back to the root of the CWM menu, then go to "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard". Navigate to wherever you saved HC-v4-emmc-2nd-edition.zip and select it. You won't see any progress, so just wait a while; around 10 minutes, I think.
Once CWM reports that the install completed, go back to "mounts and storage" and unmount the sdcard. Remove the 2GB bootable sdcard, insert your 8GB sdcard, and select "reboot" from CWM.
Your Nook will boot up running Honeycomb.
