How do I use my Galaxy Note? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my Note for a couple of months now and know my way around fairly well but it occurred to me that there's probably a ton of features that I probably know absolutely nothing about. Is there a good YouTube video around that shows you how to do all the cool stuff on your Galaxy Note?

please answer one simple question? aren't You all trying to act more dramatic than there is actually necessary?
please correct me if I am wrong, but is there a majority of You regular gamers?
come on. let's be honest. this device is great. a real power house. period.
complaining about video? coreplayer is about to release special qtv version of their player ANY MINUTE now...
complaining about camera? nothing can be done. hardware is limited and camera is just an additional option anyway.
3D gaming? ... ... dunno what to say. real game loving freaks owns psp from day one. (or since last sale...)
wait till cp for kaiser, opera mobile 9 and windows mobile 6.1 will be released. then we will talk.
this device main purpose is communication and nothing can beat it at it.
to clarify- I am not a HTC agent or whatever.
I'm just simply getting tired of overreacting and all the hate against HTC. I never heard of people talking about taking a dump on nokia's lawn cuz of crappy gps in N95.
don't get me wrong- I would be over the moon with drivers sorted, but please... give those guys a break. they actually never reffered to kaiser as a gaming device like nokia does on it's n series. I've bought my Vario III because it is succesor to my previous Vario II. gps integrated, 3meg cam (not that bad in day light and soft from polaris) tilting keyboard and the list goes on...
Yes. I am happy.
... and I love this community, who once again is showing, that wm is great sys after all and it can be customised, just how we like it.
sorry for that wall of txt, but I had it comming.

Go and try to scroll in your windows folder with file explorer. Or use TomTom to show you the navigated route. Enjoy.
To be honest, it's not about gaming at all. Not about video playing at all. It's about scrolling in IE, in file explorer, smooth display in TomTom, in Camera. These operation on older devices are much more smoother comparing to this brick. Havent you seen the videos? Dear HTC agent?
The point is, that our devices seriously underperform compared to older device due to a lack of drivers (!). This means we've been sold devices that look as if they'd outperform older devices from the spec, but don't when it comes to reality - and it's not because the hardware is not there or anything, it's merely because a driver has not been delivered.
That's like you buy a cool computer advertised with a state-of-the-art DX10 Graphicscard which is deactivated due to a lack of drivers and all the rendering is done by the crappy onboard chip. Wouldn't like it would you?*
* Analogy is somwhat impaired as you can always just get drivers for the Card, but still....
Come on
I dont like paying $500 for a Tilt when the 8525 for half that works much better!! Get a clue!
Probably his first device. Doesn't know what to expect.
That said though I'm sure in a moment he'll reply & we'll learn that he is the mastermind behind windows mobile.
I would say something but I will respect the Title of this thread.

Now I'm begining to wonder what's going on here!!!!!!!
I have no scrolling issues in windows, or viewing route in Tomtom.
I also have very few videos that don't play snoothly either.
SO and this may be an important observation. Is there a proportion of devices out there that are not working properly (possible ROM or other software setup - maybe even a hardware problem) and that others DO NOT show these problems.
On mine I simply cannot see the slowness others report. Mine is lag free and resposive. I saw some posts about the screen rotate times being slow, but mine is virtually instant.
Maybe this is what we should establish. Is it only some devices that are having problems.Compared to my 8525 my speeds are fantastic.
I notice that this odd mixture of some folks saying they have excellent speed and smooth loading and performance compared to others who seem to find the opposite - is apparent on several other PDA sites too.
Mike
EDIT: Just saw the post below. Again I have not noticed the camera being slow (except when really dark). Taking videos I dont do much of but let's say compared to TyTn it is about the same.
I will say I had a slow scroll in PIE but that was solved with the installation of the older PIE dll.
Happy? No!
I don't watch movies or play graphics intensive games. However I do use my phone as a PDA and take pictures and small videos and suck. Try scrolling anything, try taking a picture or small video of your kids. Then come back and tell me how happy you are.
Seems that either you don't actually have a Kaiser or you only use it as a phone.
Lately the camera performance on the Kaiser is really frustrating. It's almost unusable in low'ish light. With video or stills. Sure it's been like this the whole time but lately I've really been frustrated. I would like to use the camera.
To all the people who say a camera on a phone is not important I say go back in your cave. It's 2008 BTW and technology is surpassing you, get out of the way.
Sorry I'm done. Let's not trash this thread since it's call "Happy User Thread". There are alot of other threads we can do that in. As much as it's going to urk us to know that non power users will be posting in this thread oblivious to what is possible.

For all I know it may be 80% of users who have these problems. I don't in any major way or anything that by changing settings has not been fixed. I'm not trying to dismiss the issues you and possibly many others have, but it may have a bearing on the causes. Perhaps there are hardware flaws for which no amount of ROM changing will solve matters.

Is there some sort of benchmark that we could all run to see if there is something that is only affecting certain units?
I bought my TYTN II in Australia about 3 months ago and the screen redraws are abysmal, the camera is useless in anything less than perfect light. From what I have read every TYTN II is the same, depending on what your expectation is I suppose.

Me too Mike, my experience seems to follow yours. I love my little Kaiser, its a great little device, does all I ask of it, and I'm really pleased with the over all package.
And before others jump in and propose I'm a novice too, my first PDA phone was a Nokia 9000 Communicator, bought years ago. Back then, mods weren't flashing ROM's, or installing CAB's, it was done through programming, and DOS (remember that?) level commands. Or to put it another way, imagine that every tweak etc on the Kaiser had to be done via regedit. So novice, no. Happy user, yes.
I wonder if there are just some units out there that are badly made? Maybe HTC has more 'Friday' phones than most...
c'mon now, what are you talking about The tilt is about a half a step backwards from the 8525. Do the comparisons yourself, from playing movie files, video recording, picture taking in limited lighting, and the graphical redrawing of the ui itself! there's no way in hell should my ipaq Hw6515 out perform the tilt in any of these aspects! The tilt is suppose to be an upgrade from the 8525, but from the performance of it, it's not!

[Q] What did you think of the Samsung Galaxy Note Super Bowl Ad?

I though it sucked really bad. Not only it is lame but it rarely talks about the device itself and they kind of abused their simple idea which was used for the Galaxy S II.
An ad like this one would've worked like magic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvUK2VmbO2I
But unfortunately, this just comes to show how corporate Samsung ruins simple ideas for the money. I bet all what they were thinking about was spending more money to justify the spots costs, while completely ignoring that simple is what works these days.
Only 3 threads so far on this? I predict 10

I like it very much, simple yet effective....
Sent from my LT18i using xda premium
I liked the ad a lot.
A. It had the song "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," by The Darkness (LOVE THAT SONG).
B. It had Brian Urlacher
C. It had Miranda Kerr (YES!)
D. It showed the 2 MAIN features of the phone which truly distinguishes it from the iPhone - the 5.3" screen and the stylus without being over-technical. If you ever watch iPhone ads, they are never over-technical and focus more on design and simplicity, which Samsung must do to appeal to the non-techie masses. Have you ever seen an iPhone TV ad stating what speed is the processor or how many megapixels is the camera?
No, but they do show it actually being used for something other than dancing around in the street. You can show real-life usability without being too technical.

They did show usability:
1. How you can annotate Google Maps using the S-Pen
2. How you can do video chat (just like the iPhone) but without being on WiFi only.
3. How you can take a photo and doodle on the pic directly (in this case Brian Urlacher autographing is picture).

I'm USA people and I thought it was weird. I thought it did a poor job of selling the product. Instead of trying to knock Apple they should have focused on the next big thing and backed that up with the features. Either that or stick to knocking Apple. To many messages in too short a time presented with far too much ado.
I liked it. It wasn't the best but I guess that's the best it gets from Samsung?

HDC Galaxy Note N7000/i9220 Android Dualsim Phone

After some messing about on-line I was intrigued to find this video review of something that "looked" similar to the Galaxy note.
Obviously its not the real thing as you and I are well aware but it prompted me to do some more researching.
After a few nights of checking out the different versions of the "clone" I decided to bite the bullet and buy one to play about with.
Now I don't know much about Android phones and was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice as to exactly what this phone is capable of in terms of using the android marketplace and installing generic android apps.
I am a little unsure of some of the screens. It shows that it has Android Version 4.0.3 - Does that mean it has ICS already installed?
The other thing I was wondering is whether or not there are any custom roms that will do away with some of the China/Far East apps/languages that this thing will be able to run?
I have attached some pics and also the pics that I was sent in .rar files from the supplier..
**I understand that this is not the real deal so anyone who feels like having a nice flaming session then rant away. My questions are genuine in the hope to learn something..
Cheers
It's probably the cheapest hardware around in that. Don't expect any smoothness and it's on the completely opposite end of the phone spectrum from the Note. Doubt there are any custom ROM for it as well, but it probably runs many apps from Play.
I don't know why you would waste money on it, unless you try to look cool by pretending you have a genuine Note. It's a bit like walking around with a fake Rolex.
Sent from my superior GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
Yea for sure I know what you're saying. I know someone with a fake rolex. He has had it for many many years. It still even tells the right time
I in no way purchased it to "pretend" to have the real deal. I have an iphone already and this was more something to play around with.
I like the "open source" side to it and with my Linux background and Programming and coding firmware for Satellite TV Receivers It took my fancy as its not locked down as badly as an I-Phone.
I guess from reading a bit more I would have do dump the firmware that is already on the phone and decompile it and figure out how to edit it to my own needs and then re-flash.
Hell, for £130 if it keeps me amused and out of mischief for a few months then its money well spent.
I would rather learn on something that costs a LOAD less. Once I am familiar with the whole system structure, Tools, Terms, Apps, etc etc I will probably buy the real deal.
Take Care..

not bad for a fake phone imo, anyone who wants a big screen on a budget could use it.
Hey I woudn't mind using this over my (screen-plagued issues) Gnote..
This phone easily beats the features of the real mccoy.
I wonder how would Sammy feel that a run of the mill cheapo phone like this has their branded logo emblazoned on it?
Watching the video mesmerized me on the myriad capabilities this knockoff can offer.
Also great music, it 'tranced' me while watching the phone's features...
Cheers!
Does it run real ICS ?
There are fake Chinese 'iFones' in the market which certainly don't have IOS.
He says in the video it runs Gingerbread which would also explain the GB in the build number.
For 130 pounds I guess it's a pretty decent phone. It has a pretty slow single core CPU and a relatively low resolution for such a big screen but in the end you get what you pay for. I'm sure it's a nice toy to play around with and for a first Android experience you could do a lot worse but since I first used my Note I'll never settle for anything less anymore
Because these types of phones are never meant for international sales I doubt there will be any viable custom roms anytime soon and I think you can forget about official updates but even stock Gingerbread is a very decent OS. You'll miss out on a big part of the 'openness' of Android though.
Once you decide to get the real deal you'll be amazed at what the real Note is actually capable of.
I guess it has 800x480 res which gives you pixels like golf balls with a 5.3" screen. That's so extremely far from the Note hi res experience...

In the movie the guy says "it's got a 5.3 inch 5-point multi-touch screen".
That's another difference from the real Note, only being able to detect a maximum of 5 touch points. The Note detects at least 10. Nothing to be concerned about I think, I've never used more than 3 fingers at the same time.

Good that you mention about the 5 touch points. I wondered what he was doing when he touched the screen like that.
How and why would you use more then 5 fingers at one time anyway? Still pretty cool that the "real" note can do 10.

Ah okay. I am already mooching about for legit ones and there seems to be a good deal on the Real Note from amazon.de for about £350
I am actually quite looking forward for the fake one to arrive to see what its like. When I spoke to the seller, he said it came with some Legit Sammy software so who knows what that's for..
Looks like it Left Guangzhou on Friday so I expect it to be here sometime before the end of this week.
I think spythedude is aware of the fact this phone doesn't come anywhere near the specifications of the real Note. Everything about the phone screams FAKE!!! But still, for 130 pounds I think it's a pretty decent device given it's large capacitive screen. I can't think of any Android phone getting anywhere near such screen size for 130 pounds. It won't be the fastest phone around but there used to be Android phones with even worse hardware that still gave a good user experience.

I didn't mix up any pictures, I'm showing in my video exactly what I received when I ordered it. I have the FEELING (and I don't know this) that the box it came in might actually be an original box but of course it could be a fake as well. The phone definitely is NOT made by Samsung and whatever specs I mention in the video, I did so to the best of my knowledge.

I couldn't care less if some likes a particular device or not and/or orders one of them from whatever online store
I've been reviewing phone and tables for years now, some are "fakes", some are not and so far my videos have been very much appreciated by the majority of my viewers

The ones that do the best reviews for a newcomer are the following Youtube people
Zedomax
Pocketnow
C4E
Ricky The Android Guy
Watch their review videos and get good a good basic idea but in the end nothing will beat good old experimenting. Welcome to the Note 4 - you have entered a new world. The Iphone and Note 4 couldn't be anymore different. It will take a while to get used to Android and all its new possibilities. You probably will get frustrated at some points but I encourage you to stick with it and find out what you can REALLY do with an Android driven Note 4. The possibilities are limitless. Remember the basic rule about Android - if you don't like something - just change it. My Note 4 doesn't even resemble a stock android anymore because I tweaked it so much but I spent countless hours tinkering around with it. When you have questions - just ask politely and you will find there are tons of people willing to lend a hand.
Good luck and as I said welcome to a new world.
Hi off the top of my head I would think everybody should enable the S pen reminder setting where if you set your pen down and walk away without it your phone would beep and vibrate reminding you the pen is not in/near the phone anymore
To enable
Settings >
Scroll down to the tab “Motions and Control/Control” >
Tap S Pen >
Tick S Pen Alerts
Its probably ticked by default but cant remember and its good to make sure its enabled cause I walk away a couple of times and forgot the pen haha

[Q] Nexus 6 owner with quite a lot of questions.

Hi all,
After spending 3 years on the iOS side after departing from my S2 and Sensation XE, I've finally decided to come back to the Green side and see how this works out for me. Naturally, I still have a bad aftertaste of the Samsung phones, and seeing as the Nexus phones now have flagship specs, I might as well go for the Nexus. So I did, and I'm the proud owner of a 64 GB Midnight Blue Nexus 6. However, I've grown quite accustomed to some things on iOS for which I still need help after swapping over to Android, and I hope I won't get shot down immediately for this. Very well then, off to my shot in the dark and list my questions:
1. Battery percentage. I cannot seem to find an option to enable this anywhere in the system. Is this a feature missing from stock Android?
2. Swiping to navigate back and forward doesn't seem to be in the browser. Any way to enable this?
3. Is there a function to avoid popups from showing on top of my screen while playing games? I play a lot of rhythm games and the pop ups mess my rhythm up. I tried the None option, but it still allowed notifications to get through.
4. Is there a way to allow YouTube videos to play in the background? Or even with the screen locked?
5. There seems to be some considerable lag while moving through the UI as well as in games and such. Is this due to the encryption?
Now onto some other kind of questions which most likely will be answered by doing my own research (which I will be doing, but might as well ask them here while I investigate in hopes of finding even quicker answers. As I find out about them, I'll either add in the answers to the questions or remove the questions entirely to avoid people getting annoyed at me.)
6. If encryption is causing the lag in my games as well as UI (Compared to my old i6+), will decrypting the device improve much? If yes, is there a quick and easy way to do so?
7. Has rooting become easier and with less risks of the user F-ing it up?
8. I vaguely remember custom ROMs as well as Kernels, and I've been reading up a bit. Are there any bug free 5.0.2 Roms/Kernels out yet? Specifically looking for performance increases with less battery drain.
9. CMRecovery it was called back in the day I believe. Is this still around to save me from massive F-ups?
10. Is the utility ODIN still required to flash Roms? I remember it as being a terribly counter-intuitive application to use.
11. Is CyanogenMod supporting the Nexus 6 officially? If not, any plans for it?
Well, those are it for now. Don't hate me, please! I will start my research after posting this. Just thought I'd try and hit 2 birds with one rock, cutting down the overall time.

Hi all,
After spending 3 years on the iOS side after departing from my S2 and Sensation XE, I've finally decided to come back to the Green side and see how this works out for me.

1. Oh. The double finger drag does show it. No way to show it permanently without having to drag it down aside from installing an app?
2. Any other browsers you know of which do support it?
3. I don't want to disable them permanently. I'm looking for some kind of Do not Disturb mode which I can toggle on and off.
4. Hmm, annoying. But I guess I can live without it for now.
5. I found a topic describing the same issues. Might as well try and decrypt. People seem to have good results from it, at least in the UI.
6. Aaand that is the exact topic I found at question 5, haha.
7. Thank god. I read about this ChainFire AutoRoot tool. Is this the way to go now?
8. Much appreciated. Once I figure out which order to do everything in I'll check that out. Any recommendations for a 5.0.2 Rom?
9. An all-in-one tool, perfect for an idiot like me.
10. Right, no wonder it's counter-intuitive. Sorry for the hate on Samsung, my experience just hasn't been the best regarding the brand.
11. So no official support yet. Hmm, I guess I'll avoid custom CM roms then for now.
It helped a tremendous amount! I really appreciate it!
To add there are some you tube apps that will play with the screen off. I have one I can upload if you would like. You'll have to delete the current one you have though

I only seem to have the basic YouTube app provided by Lollipop itself. Is that removable? If so, I'd gladly use one you could provide me. I'm not looking for an amazing list of features, but it would be nice if it adhered to the Material Design as well. But if it doesn't, no big deal either.
If you feel comfortable flash Liquid Smooth ROM and root your phone. It provides the best of all world's for smoothness and features. I've been using LS for a while and its great. You can enable many different styles of battery icons with % inside or outside the batter icon. You can also have the % battery in the icon via an app if you search the play store. You can uninstall the app once its enabled.
Rooting doesn't cause issues, its what you Dow with root that can potentially cause issues. Since this is a Nexus you can easily fix a bootloop should you get one somehow.
AOSP browser has a similar swiping method for the browser but it uses pie controls which in my opinion is better.
YouTube can play in the background, I use this frequently and even with the screen off from what I remember.

As for installing a custom ROM, I was planning on following this video:
How to Root the Nexus 6 & Flash a Custom ROM: youtu be/v0Dh52Swsac (can't post links yet it seems)
It seems quite idiot proof as there is a step for step guide to walk me through the process. Would you advise me to follow this videos steps?
I cannot find the AOSP browser on my device for some reason, do I need to install it still?
I've been trying to get YouTube to play in the background, but so far I've been unsuccessful, could you perhaps direct me to the setting to allow it?
I greatly appreciate your help!

Here's a link to the you tube. You will have to enable of screen playback in settings. Also uninstall your you tube that is already on the phone. I didn't make this just sharing what I found on XDA
