Genome Sequencing - Off-topic

When my mom asked my kid brother what he wanted for his birthday he asked to have his DNA or genome sequenced to find out his genotype. (Or something like that, I'm still learning about all this.) She asked me to pick out a computer for him haha. But I've been doing some research and I think it's a really good idea! They can tell you what health issues you are predisposition to, and give your doctor information about your genetic structure that would help him better prescribe medicine. Also they tell you your genetic ancestry, genetic relatives, and even what percent Neanderthal you are. haha
23andme will do it for $300. I heard about them through Wired, and their website looks good.
Has anyone ever done this or know someone who has? What company did you use?
On the other hand if you think it's a bad idea for some reason, tell me why. So far I don't see any reason why not to do this. Frankly I am dumbfounded that health insurance companies do not require it.

Seems like a worthwhile idea. I didn't know it was as inexpensive as $300 already, I figured it was still like a couple hundred thousand or more. If I had the disposable income, I'd probably go for it.

I know right. And the way I understand it they continue to check different new diseases against your genotype and update your predispositions on your profile, for the initial $300. They add new genetic relatives on your family tree too.
It's just such a new thing I don't know what I might should be concerned about, or who has good track records. I was hoping someone had already had it done and could share their experience.

The only downside is the government is obviously collecting your DNA to create a clone army.

Right. But what I'm most concerned about is will the rogue DNA recognize me as its genetic match and obey my commands. I don't want Dr Frankenstein to build a monster out of me if I can't control myself, ya know? The cloning feature was only a bit extra, but I don't want a genetic friend. I want to be able to sleep in and force my genetic equivalent go to work and clean the house, and the ESP control feature is a little out of my price range.

There are downsides. How differently would you lived your life if you knew there was an increased likelihood of dying early from some terrible disease. I think in most cases I would want to know, but not everyone would want to.
The biggest problem is going to be when insurance companies start to require this testing as a way to get coverage. Then those people with "bad genetics" will be forced to pay higher premiums.

Bumping the thread, I won't do it again.
I'm kinda surprised nobody has done this.

Never done it, but it sounds pretty cool.
Is there any point in bumping a 6 hour old post.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Tapatalk 2

Haven't done it. But at $300 its getting a lot closer to what I'd be willing to pay and im sure eventually it will be cheap enough for insurance companies to cover it since it would let them know about possible medical expenses down the road.

Haha. Well I could save him the money because I know he wasn't. He's one of those "too smart for his own good" type kids. He wants to be an evolutionary biologist. Who picks something like that as a career at 15 years old? lol. He is definitely the next generation of scientific minded free thinkers.

"Fantastic" service by HTC Singapore

/rant
First of all, let me say that I really envy the American HTC users who seem extremely satisfied with HTC on that side of the globe. Unfortunately, it seems that even after owning HTC phones for the last 4 years, I havent learnt my lesson that HTC Singapore is truly incapable.
My nexus one started developing an erratic screen and it was to the point where i couldnt even type a message properly without having to power cycle the device to set the screen straight. I called them on the 11th of Aug to send it in (they pick up the devices here from you, so a little kudos there), however, they were unable to supply me a loaner. They said if i sent it for repair in 2 weeks, they would be able to help me out, so I waited. On the 23rd, I called them to check, and lo and behold, the service rep says they have no loaner phones at all, and will not be able to help. I figure what the heck, time to dust off the old winmo touch pro and just send the nexus one in ... the tech promises me a 3-5day turn around. 1 week later I call them up, and the tech tells me they had a problem sourcing screens, and would need to hold on to my phone "indefinitely" ... I asked him if he was off his rocker and since I had work to attend to, I left it at that. I fired off an email at night to their customer service email address, and get a reply that it will be taken care off. Literally the next day, I get an email saying my phone is ready, and it will be couriered to me the next day. I was impressed. Needless to say, when i received my phone yesterday, I was in for a rude shock... (point to note: when I sent in my phone, even the courier remarked that my phone didnt have a single scratch anywhere on it) they had sent me the phone with the screen protector half peeled off (they didnt even have the decency to replace it since they ripped it off, but i figured since they replaced the screen, it was worth it) .. i look around the phone, and there's now a scratch right next to volume rocker. Since it was the same courier who picked up the phone, he told me to send them an email, since he himself recalled there were no scratches ... I told myself for a 6mth old phone, I could live with the scratch .. I power cycle the phone and ...
the bloody screen was still erratic! they had simple reset my phone to factory (which i had already tried, in order to get rid of the problem) and sent it back to me (since i recalled that they said they didnt have the screen in stock anyway) ... so now i am, more than a week with the phone in their hands, and nothing to show for it except a scratched nexus one with a peeling screen protector. to add insult to injury, i contacted them and was told someone would call to rectify the situation ... which obviously no one has now ...
it really sucks because i really enjoy this phone ... i bought 2 - one for the girlfriend and one for myself, and hers works perfectly fine, so i know my screen's just nuts ... now the hard part is getting the "fantastic" guys over @ HTC to fix it again, since they still said they have no loaners at all ... *sigh*
Has anyone ever had any good experiences with HTC Singapore??
if you made it this far, thanks .. i had to rant somewhere .. ><

I feel your pain. I've had utterly horrible encounters with HTC Singapore as well. Not just me but a buddy of mine too. We should start a FB group saying what we really think about their support. Maybe that might generate enough negative publicity for them to fire their staff and do a 180.
Best we can do is just not buy their products. I'm already telling my friends to get samsung or motorola phones from now on.

let me be straightforward with you caysman - i have no qualms rewarding when service is met or exceeded ... i believe i may be one of the few singaporeans who tips everywhere he goes. whether its a kopitiam, starbucks or your neighbourhood restaurant. i have no problem throwing down $10 for a $50 meal if i enjoyed the service. likewise with the attitude ... i sent caltex a letter commending the guy who pumps gas at my regular station because he always went out of his way to be polite (and if you would like to see the letter, by all means, ask). not every singaporean only complains ... i spent a good sum on an exotic supercar .. the service is immaculate, even though the warranty's been up for more than 3 years. the dealer cares enough about his customers that he will wake up at 5am to attend to a customer's problem if he has to. is it so much to ask that if i buy the top of the line htc cellphone, that they honor their warranty at the least? all i asked was for a functioning screen, i did not root the phone or do anything crazy with it - all it has to do is work fine. i didnt complain till it came back to me in the same condition that i sent it in.
so while your outlook on singaporeans may be pretty poor for reasons unknown to me, it wouldnt be fair to generalize.
Boastful singaporean, where is your grace?

Oops you probably have a red ferrari, not a lambo. Pendants usually go for Fs. Enough money to buy the perfect life not knowing that with todays technology,' good enough' is the secret to true happiness.
And u bought the nexus one not for its technology but for its exclusivity. Most of your dumb potters have iphones.
And some in my posts lie the nugget of truth describing the cancer in the world's second richest country.

well, its painfully obvious now to me ... with you, "cannot win" ... since you have to be right about everything and have your own ideas set in stone - you are welcome to them. but please dont force your ideas of what others would like to do / purchase with their own money. do what you like with your money and perceive everything as you will, but being bitter about it and telling people off because they worked hard to buy certain things just goes to show what kind of person you truly are. if you have any more "useful" nuggets of information, feel free to pm me and spare everyone else your posts. i have no problem debating this matter with you but if you are unable to contribute to the thread, please stop making it go off topic.

@mokurex: well caysman is probably singaporean / living in singapore, not sure what his game is but oh well.
@caysman: its called an example, since you allowed yourself the opportunity to generalize an entire country / populace based on your beliefs.
again, as you pointed out, no point to argue since you have your ideas and i have mine. think of me as you wish, since its obvious i have nothing i can say that would change your mentality.
@bullyfrog: while the idea of a fb group sounds good, the problem is that HTC may be outsourcing its repair services here... hence the differentiation in levels of service between usa and singapore, for example.
@x You take part in that pathetic singaporean thread at ferrarichat?

Alright, Who is the guy selling on Ebay?

Just ran into this on Ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nook-Color-SD-card-rooting-program-Installed-/160524547022?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25600233ce
Whoever bought that card must be insane...
....and the other auction for$ 350 for a rooted Nook Color.
Preying on other peoples ignorance is not a very nice trait unfortunately there are always some people who will try to take advantage of others for profit.
Maybe we should spam the listings!
LOL The same or similar happened when the Pandigital Novel was rooted.
Perhaps the same guy who is selling it on youtube ?

I dunno, I rooted my friends NC and he insisted on paying me. I did it right even wrote some new batch scripts to mod the system apps for him. He was so stoked and dazzled that he would not take no for an answer. Finally settled for a good bottle of Hennessy. I definitely made out on the deal, but he is really happy. I don't think it is necessarily preying on ppls ignorance, some ppl just don't want to be bothered. I know how to change my oil but I still take my cars to a shop to have it done. Just saying.

I can understand that, but in this case someone is selling programs that were made to be free..
Look on craigslist in any city, there are people advertising iPhone jailbreaking for $30 a pop.
Rooting is a pretty simple process, but some people are scared of anything involving modding and if they're willing to pay for it, why can't someone sell it to them?
It certainly wasn't me, and I wouldn't recommend anyone I know to pay for it, but they have a right to sell and the buyers have a right to buy.
Are they selling the programs though or the skills to do it that is the issue really. I rooted a friends for no charge. If someone offers as a thanks then fine but ya selling what is effectively someone elses work blows. Maybe they were part of the team working on it they deserve the$ $$ maybe this guy will donate eh
It was relisted so I don't think anyone was dumb enough to pay money for it.

Warning not to buy Flytouch 3 or clones.

For god's sake, whatever you do, don't buy:
Flytouch 3 superpad 2 (or any of its clones).
The support forum is filled with problems with the clones, too many to list.
The Ibex Flytouch 3 originals have very poor batteries, supposed to be 8000 mAh (2 x 4000), and are more like 2 x 1800. Most people are having troubles getting them to accept a charge at all.
Their internal GPS is locked to China, SOME people have managed to unlock them by spending a couple of hours deleting caches, rebooting, trying to re-fix the satellites, repeat until working or give up. MOST people still have not managed to unlock the GPS from China.
Market ONLY shows the free apps (something to do with fake sim numbers being too fake and illegitimate). When you are sent to market from an email, website, or even the tablets OWN auto update service, it won't show the app you are looking for.
They MAY appear to be cheap value-for-money Android tablet alternatives; trust me, they ARE NOT. Save up more money and get a proper named brand tablet.
Update:
My Flytouch 3 is no more, at about 4 days old the charging battery exploded, melting the FT3 and scorching the computer desk.
I urge anyone thinking of buying one of the Ibex Flytouch 3's, or its clones (Superpad 2 or 3) - DON'T!

I got banned from there because they didn't want anyone warned of the faulty batteries, they're the most fanatic people over their FT3's.
So you assume I did a whole lot of things and it's my fault it exploded. You can assume anything.
"mess around with your battery config," - ChinaGrabber tell you to go to that forum for help, and do what's posted there. Now I'M to blame for doing just that?
It got buried under kitty litter because the fumes from burnt lithium batteries are toxic.

What makes you think I feel any need to prove this to anyone here?
It happened. Whether you believe it or not is irrelevant to it happening and irrelevant to me..
my 32gb iBex Flytouch3 works perfectly. Would recommend iBex Flytouch3 (real FT3) to my friends.
I bought flytouch3 from taobao.com. It cost almost 250 USD.
It may be the most expensive one in taobao, but it works good.
It can standby at least 6 hrs, and the GPS works in Taiwan.
Market can show all apps including the charged apps.
I just bought one yesterday from chinagrabber, shame on me? From what I've gathered the information this is the best and most supported chinese tablet there is..
Yes another classic example of somebody not doing their homework before buying something and then blindly attacking it with a soldering iron and hacksaw.
I'm more than satisfied with mine, it's not the fastest piece of kit, but for €150 it's certainly worth the money if you have a good working knowledge of Android and now how to fix a few quirks.
If you read around the forums, there is support for all of them. I have yet to have found an issue that couldn't be remidied in one way shape or form. I bought mine for $150 US shipped. I'm no knocking Ibex. Just merely stating that their pad isn't the only option. Open minded-ness is what I'm getting at. I've heard a lot of bad things about ChinaGrabber's return policy's etc., and that left a bad taste in my mouth. I wanted an inexpensive pad with some support on the US side (I.e warranty issues). I know I could have purchased something else, but this was what I wanted.

I've now been playing with my FT3 couple of days and I'm very happy with it, with Tim5a rom everything works, Market (it shows paid apps if I buy them from my Android cellphone). GPS works well out of the box, it's fast, Youtube, Flash all working. Battery life is very good, I don't keep it on standby as it does eat the battery even without wifi off. If you've ever used a Android phone this feels like home and the performance is the same. Resistive screen just gets a little bit more to get used to compared to capacitive but it's really responsive. Videos play very nicely, only tried 720p but all worked without a single lag.

Don't.
Market ONLY shows the free apps not to mention all the other problems (something to do with fake sim numbers being too fake and illegitimate). For YOUR OWN sake don't buy this piece. Really if you want an ANDROID tablet then save your money and buy a legitimate Android Tablet from a well known manufacturer. It's the WORST money I've ever spent in my life. PLEASE don't waste your time. And if you do and are satisfied with a cheap poor generic excuse for an android spending hours upon end of your life downloading and installing firmware, then more power to you, have fun. I just wish I would have saved my money than to have given it to scam artists or try to get help from those who need to help sale more CRAPWARE by saying its all volunteer. Really really real. (Now watch how I get called names and treated like dirt for posting this on a thread that is titled: Warning not to buy Flytouch 3 or clones.) It's crazy how easy it is to get caught up by weirdos at crappad tv who act like they are helping the world or something not following any of there own rules. Please DON'T be fooled by the posts that follow this saying how good it is. Believe me, it is not. Save a little more money even if its just 100 or 200 more. Not being argumentative in the slightest - I'd just stay out if I was - you've sparked my curiosity. What else are they for then? I thought they were literally just for telling you about speed traps.

your not argumentative at all, but they have many uses like for instance the GPS modules tell your speed, red light cameras, accuracy on speed.
The bands it has like for instance a 15 band has 7 types of radars, 6 lasers, and 2 safety signals. like when a firetruck or emergency vehicles, etc...
several other reasons too, just gives you a warning doesn't give you the GO to speed.
*bump* does anyone use them?? i would like some advice on them
Just make sure it doesn't show up on the police's radar, Cause mine did and they took it... It was long time ago, so maybe the new one's are better

Don't waste your money on a Cobra. When they came out 30 years ago they were the best, but they have fallen seriously behind.
Look at Escort/Beltronics. They're the same company but I think they still sell under both names. Best radar detectors out there hands down.
And make sure they are legal in the state you plan on using it. The fines and hassle of getting caught are much much worse than the speeding ticket.

if you are going to get one, get a good one, with laser detection and such
those will cost you about $300, starts at around $250
they do work, except for when the come is hidding beneath your windshield level of view
LOL that's the only time they got me
they should invent X-Ray detectors so it can monitor through under the hood, then you'll get a nice 360 monitoring

Honestly,in that price range,I would just wait on getting one. They typically won't do enough to warrant spending 100-120. if you can't get at least an 8500 x50, I wouldn't waste my money. I wouldn't buy anything under 200.

I've owned a cobra. Be it an older cheaper model from like 02. But like I said, "I" wouldn't buy anything less than an x50. I couldn't justify it. For the price,I'm sure it's a decent RD judging from a quick search, just not something I would buy.

Anything under $300 won't do you much good. Look up the Valentine 1, passport escort, or belltronics sti. They are well known and respected. You can do some research at radarroy.com its pretty informative

Why is it that every time a new product comes out...

early adopters complain about issues and treat it like it a huge surprise?
You bought the first run on purpose. I have yet to see a piece of electronics that didn't have some kind of issue at launch. The iPhone 4, Galaxy S, G2...pretty much every piece of hardware I have followed the launch of has had issues at launch.
I've taken the stand that I am going to wait at least a month before I buy a new product. Usually longer. I also prefer to buy pre-owned so I can save money and also make sure the thing works.
So why all the surprise? Is it that people just like drama or are they really that ignorant?

+1 :good:
You make it sound like the only people that own the product are the ones here complaining. I'm willing to bet they are a small fraction of the owners. Besides, the true early adopters know that there will be issues, and quietly get them resolved without making a stink. My thoughts are the ones complaining are the ones that only follow the big tech announcements and see the next "must have" product and aren't true "early adopters".
tl;dr whining about whiners
Where do you expect a post on XDA like this to go? I would suggest you ask a mod to close this thread as it has no relevant value (other than starting flame wars).
So only threads complaining about problems unnecessarily are allowed?

I waited until recently to grab one and I still got a dud. Don't get me wrong, I loved my Nexus 7 and still highly recommend it to people. What burns me is when issues aren't fixed, which seems to be a growing trend with ASUS right now. If there's an issue and it's fixed, I'm as happy as a clam. Refusal to fix with a 170 dollar quote from ASUS to fix it? Now that's just bad.
So if I buy a car that's a first production run and it fails on my while driving it's to be expected? I don't think that's acceptable. But hey maybe I am just a crazy person who expects things to work.

But are you dropping 20 grand on a phone? I doubt it. Phones usually aren't used for more than a year or two before the owner decides to upgrade. A car is usually used 5-10+ years. You can't expect the quality control from a car to be the same or even close to the same as for a mobile device.
Now I agree, I also want things to work but no way will the company be able to iron out all the problems before release.
Its not that we expect products to be problem free, but they should be free of *major* problems and/or the mfg should fix these issues. That's not what I'm seeing with the latest Asus products though...

I agree. Plus your nexus 7 isn't going to kill you if something breaks or goes wrong. Cars are held to a different standard and are tested to make sure they are safe for people.

Seems like a reasonable thing to discuss in the general section. Your reply seems kind of rude.
I guess that, for me at least, I don't consider myself a beta tester. If I buy a product, be it first run or 10 years later, I expect it to work like it is supposed to work. Anything less is not acceptable in my view. If you charge me money for a product, then I demand/feel entitled/whatever to have that product live up to it's claims. Now, if you want me to be a beta tester for your product, by all means, you can give me a non-polished product...but then the product needs to be free and if you want more than complaints, be prepared to pay me an hourly rate for my time as well.
Luckily I seem to have incredible luck and I've only had one product be defective out of all the mobile devices I've owned.
Boohooo
With any rather is be a new car a cell phone or tablet.. or even a door knob.. You will here from 1 of maybe a few hundred that are totally satisfied.. When people have issues now days they head online. IF this were a car forum you would hear complaints .well maybe even about your car. that you might love and have no issues..
people witeh issues wanna hear from others with similar issues. If nothing more then to know they are not alone . When people ban together especially a place like here to let it be known there are MAJOR issues with a product the manufacture takes notice. YES even ASUS with there lack of ability to produce a good product . 4 Years ago i would have stood behind them. NO MORE well i just hope they get the act together before they get hit with many class action suits. There is a huge common problem with the nexus..
NO The problem is not performance or function . its BUILD QUALITY a crying shame on such a well thought out product. with very poor Quality testing
With all that said XDA in the general section under the correct device . Doing so respectfully is the CORRECT Place for these type of post.. Development is not just software its built and design quality. As we have seen several post about people fixing there own device .
As far as this tablet.. THERE should be a buffer space between the trim piece and the glass. Glass and plastic expands and contracts diffident This will likely cause alot of glass breaking in the future.. Mine broke 30 minutes after purchase in my hand with no drop no over exertion . Yes these issues are a exception to most peoples experience.. But they still happen to often..
my two Cents...
Many threads are there to report problems or see if others have the same problem to see if there is a common factor or fix, not always just to complain.
A topic complaining about complaining, I find it easier not to click on topics that do not appeal to me.......Or I just thought of a new topic to make

So your saying make a new thread about threads complaining about people who are are posting about issues with there Device CLEAVER.
NOT..!!!!!!!!!!!
People want to pay $100 bucks and have a complaint about everything that is wrong with something. It reminds me of those people who buy 40 inch Coby TV's and then complain and tell the world about how bad Coby is and why it sucks..
