Hiya guys.
I've searched the forum as much as I can to try and solve my problems and it's got me so far but I can't find any more information to get my phone back working properly so though I'd bite the bullet and make a thread. If the information I require is actually lurking out there then I apologise just please point me in the right direction.
Here is my story.
Right I rooted my device through some video I followed on youtube (I cant post the link)
I think it successfully (as far as I know) rooted my SGS.
So with my newly rooted SGS I downloaded Darky's ROM and followed the instructions in the guide to flash it onto the device.
In the end it failed and the phone powered off and wouldn't power back on.
Panic Ensued.
I have since got my phone back into the download mode and flashed froyo 2.2 (I downloaded from some link on this site) it said it was successful but now it won't boot past the Samsung Galaxy S logo.
Please help?
Thanks alot in advance.
try to do a factory reset in recovery (sometimes it works)
and another thing, it may be that the froyo rom you downloaded was bad or something..
try to use this one with odin if the factory reset wont work. i know this one works.
Flash as PDA using Odin with repartition enabled and 512 pit
http://sourceforge.net/projects/teamhacksung/files/galaxys/GT-I9000_FROYO_FULL_PDA.tar/download
that one fixed my friend phone when something slimier happened to him.
Right thanks alot mate don't know what the hell happened but left it off and just turned it on and now it's working fine!
Scared me a little that I nearly bricked it but I really wanna try installing a new rom but don't wanna break it again :S
Just read the flash instructions and you won't have any problems.
Sent from hell to take your soul
When you flash it can take up to 10 minutes for the 1st boot, so go have a cup of tea and be patient!
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Ah right that was my first time so it might have just been me being impatient and thinking it wasn't working because it had been broken.
Also just wondering, the link I downloaded this Froyo ROM from (from another thread on here, can't find it now) is it custom or stock?
Heres some details...
Firmware version
2.2.1
Kernel version
2.6.32.9
[email protected]#36
The phone feels much snappier than before!
I'm new to all this ROM/flashing bees wax so just wondering.
Thanks muchly!
If its from some thread on here its custom some how some way (unless you just changed the kernel - which is speedmod - a very popular one - from your details.
G
Yeah it's off here from a thread I was reading on how to sort my phone being stuck in download mode.
Is it alot faster than the original rom I was running then?
Okay first of all, I would like to apologize if this is being posted in the wrong forum, or if I am upsetting anybody by posting this. I have searched all over for a couple days trying to figure this out. This is my last resort, and I'm hoping you guys can help. All of your time and understanding is much appreciated!
So a little background. About a week ago, I rooted my AT&T Captivate 2.2(build number 1012 if that helps) using Superoneclick, and then flashed CM7.1 using clockworkmod. I was not satisfied with CM7.1(terrible battery for me, other various reasons). I then downloaded MIUI (not sure which version, the one available on the premium version of clockworkmod) and flashed it using clockworkmod. This started with the cm bootscreen, and then went to an MIUI bootscreen that played a little tune. The miui screen looped, and it would not go past this.
After rebooting and running into the same thing, I went to f\attempt to find a solution. I thought I backed up my rom, but it had been erased (issue with the external sd I think). I used an odin one click I found on here, but this odin one click brought me back to eclair 2.1, instead of 2.2. Up until now, I could get into both download and recovery mode using the three button method, and now I can't. I am not sure what to do exactly. I have read about getting it into download mode using adb, but I'm not sure if that would work in my situation, and I'm not too educated on adb or android sdk. I stayed up almost all night last night, and now have researched most of today, not making much progress.
Thanks again for your time!
Just to clarify have you used all button methods in order to try to get into download mode. Seems as though flashing bootloaders may have f'ed up you combos. I have a couple suggestions. I'll edit my post as I find the urls to post for you
Stock GB ROM you should be using -- http://www.mediafire.com/?05nemq5yyn5fuqf, this one has bootloaders, but preferably you should use stock odin roms that don't mess with the BL's (after this of course, since yours are messed up right now).
Now of course this depends upon you getting into download mode. If you can use ROMmanager (btw, I don't recommend you download your roms from rommanager, as that will not always be the most up to date and may not be the one for you) to get into recovery mode, then from there go to advanced then reboot download. However some kernels do not support this. Try the cable methods before trying this method.
First of all, I appreciate your help Mikel.canovas. I have used all the button methods. I can no longer get into recovery or download. (Romtoolbox enables me to get into recovery(2E), but not download). I now have root access, but am not able to sideload apps, and apparently rommanager free isn't available on the market. I did buy rommanager premium, but unfortunately now that I basically reset my phone, it doesn't show up as bought (known issue, apparently not resolved?), and even after I bought it again, it says I need the free version to even use the premium version.
Should I go through the process to be able to sideload apps? Or will romtoolbox do the trick? Rom toolbox gives me the option to install a rom from my sd card. Should I use that, and select the GB ROM you provided? I'm not sure I understood exactly how you want me to get that GB ROM onto my phone.
What I want to eventually have is either MIUI or rom fasty on my phone. If possible, could you give me some steps on how to reach that goal?
Thanks again for your time. Eclair on the captivate is not pleasant, especially since I had a taste of CM.
Well first off I highly recommend Mosaic over CM or Fasty, solely because of performance and battery life. However that is all subjective.
Ah since you're rom is sending to 2E recovery, you're not rooted with cwm. You need to flash another kernel that supports this. Afterwards, If you can get into CWM, I recommend putting CM onto your sdcard and flashing from there. After booting into CM hold down the power button, press reboot, choose reboot download. See if that works. If not, does adb reboot download work for you? If not again, I recommend trying another USB port, reinstalling drivers, trying different button combos. I've had issues getting into download mode in the past and, trust me, it is VERY frustrating.
Well first of all, before you back into flashing stuff, don't flash to stock unless you have done everything possible with the tools on your phone. I'm assuming you gave it at least 5 minutes to boot up, as the first boot can variably take longer. You could go into recovery and wipe stuff, or you could have gone back to CM7. A flash to stock is probably never necessary in the situation you reported.
Anyway, if you can get into recovery, maybe try getting a kernel that allows you to reboot into download from recovery. Although that will depends on what kernel you are on right now, as I know speedmod kernel has that option, but you would need to get to download to flash that.
And as another poster wrote, have you tried all button combinations?

Or download SGS Kernel Flasher from the market. You can then flash kernels with the app. without having to go into download mode. Very handy.
Once again guys, thank you for your time. A little more information:
Kernel:
2.6.29
[email protected]#12
Baseband:
I897UCJF6
Let me know if you need any other information.
I am able to get into download mode using the terminal emulator in rom tool box. (The free version of rom manager is no longer on the market)
I was hoping one of you could give me a step by step of what I need to do, with links to downloads.
And yes, I have tried all off the three button methods. Also, I probably should have researched more before I flashed back to stock.

If nobody beats me to it, I will post you some links tomorrow when I'm on my laptop.
Oh, and miui won't really give you better battery life than CM7. It basically is CM7 with a different UI. I loved CM7 a ton, so if you are having issues with it, let me know! With the right kernel and other settings, battery life is pretty decent, as long as you charge nightly.

What is the build number of your phone? It's located under your battery, looks something like 10.06,10.07, 10.08 and so on
Alright, thank you, I will be checking back tomorrow.
Eventually what I want is to have the working 3 button combos again for both download and recovery mode, and either the miui, mosaic or rom fasty on my phone.
Easy flash GB BL's and you won't have to worry about 3 button problems!
If you didnt do a Master Clear, now would be the time. Make sure you back up anything you want to keep. MC will erase EVERYTHING on your internal SD
Remove your Micro SD, and your SIM
Download:
OneClick Root
SideLoadWonderMachine This also has CWM, 3ButtonFix and ROM Manager in the zip
Make sure you have Debugging enabled
Connect to your PC
Run One Click Root, and follow the instructions, reboot
Run Sideload Wonder Machine and direct it to install ROM Manager
Copy the update.zip(CWM) and 3Button Fix to your phone
Open ROM manager and "reboot to recovery"
You'll go thru the boot twice to get to CWM
In CWM install the 3 Button Fix
I usually pop out the battery and check it before I put the ROM in.
VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! DO NOT TRY TO USE THE 3ButtonFix while you have a GB ROM installed you WILL brick your phone. It only works on 2.1, and 2.2 ROM's
using this one click package I now am able to manually enter download and recovery :

1012, do you think any of my problems would have to do with the build number? WHen I got it, it had froyo with the working button combinations.
Sorry, I didn't see that until now.
I now have clockwork recovery, and I'm about to try out fasty. Thanks again guys.
So can I delete this thread? And if so, should I? I've found plenty of threads that seem outdated, and fill up the search engine.

The only reason I asked about the build # is because the 10.08's were pretty commonly known to have 3 button issues. Also, anything above 1012 and using Odin1 Click could soft brick. I was just checking as I was offering info

Yep. Because these are Odin or Heimdall One Clicks.
You can't just flash to a GB firmware/rom from Eclair/Froyo without using Odin or Heimdall to at least get the Gb Bootloaders. You cannot just go through CWM recovery unless u already have the GB Bootloaders.
Of course u can get it all through mini Kies, the official GB 2.3.5 KK4 update that is.
I used AdamOutler 's guide to root and put a custom ROM on Captivate 2.2 found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1012769
And everything went swiftly. AT THIS POINT, I MADE A NANDROID BACKUP
I then wanted to step up to an Ice Cream Sandwich ROM, which was the main purpose of my rooting in the first place. So, I downloaded the ROM found in this forum, as it is the most popular amongst the forums, so to seem. I found it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
Well I downloaded the ROM straight from my phone on the browser, then put it on the Root of my internal memory.
I booted into recovery, Factory Reset/Wipe Cache Partition/Wipe Dalvik Cache.
Went to install .zip from SD card, then clicked on install the ICS ROM.
Began to seem as if it was updating, then the phone shut off, started bootlooping.
No big deal I thought, just boot into recovery, right? I booted into recovery. It went from the Red CWM that i had seen before, to a Blue one.
I selected my nandroid backup, and it gave me all sorts of errors.
Got to the point where CWM was acting as if it could even find where it was supposed to work from?
Now I have the Phone>!<Computer on the black screen when I try to turn on.
Anyone else ever had this problem, or could someone tell me what went wrong? Not in a huge rush as this is just my development phone, but do I need to go ahead and use the Odin3 One Click to do a full complete restore or is there any way of saving what I had?
Thanks guys, God Bless.

Different kernels have different colour recoveries. kernels change with rom.
Different CWM version recoveries are incompatible.
Almost anyone that has flashed a samsung galaxy phone has seen that screen, and it is correctly written " Phone /!\ PC " (you can choose to underline the /!\ if you want to be fancy). it is called the "soft brick screen" hint hint.. go search.
yes
yes. restore with same kernel you used to back it up.

Very good responce...however after odin3 one clicking back to stock 2.1 eclair, I lost my clockwork mod folder that was on the internal SD, of course. Rookie mistake, I should've definately copied it on to the external SD card. Thanks for informing me of proper terminology. Also, after downloading rom manager and flashing, booting recovery, I can only access cwm through the rom manager, the three button fix doesn't work.
Why was this moved? I posted in general..
because you have a question/problem
rom manager is only used with 2.1 (for captivate). doesnt work on 2.2 or 2.3.X or 4.0.X
in all newer versions of android we "bake" cwm into the custom kernels we package into the custom roms. so there is no stock recovery and you dont need the update.zip.
dunno why you would flash all the way back to 2.1... EWWW.
in the dev section there is a sticky called odin master collection. use a newer stock rom. the master collection also has stocks versions, pre-packcaged with a custom cwm kernel so you can skip a step of getting it after going back to stock.
Do we know why this happened in the first place? Incompatible kernel? Is there a guide somewhere for moving from GB to ICS?

I thought you had to have GB bootloaders before you flashed any ICS roms ? I know I've read that ,then again I've read 10,000 threats and sometimes it becomes mind numbing.
Do you not have to flash back to 2.1 after having these problems? Right now my phone is at the soft brick screen, no button combo working. Not recognized by the computer either. I'm heading out to radio shack and make a USB jig in a bit. I'd love to just flash straight up to a gingerbread ROM if I can possibly get this thing in download mode. Anybody help a brotha out!
Edit: the sim is not activated, I just run it off Wi-Fi because big red is my carrier. This is my development phone. So I can't just KIES update to whatever the newest is.

Any firmware should work, no need to go all the way to eclair...just flash gingerbread.
Don't think its been mentioned yet but when going from 2.2 to ICS, you have to flash the rom twice to get out of the bootloops. Sounds like you were at that point but when you flashed your nandroid instead of the ICS rom again, your phone must not have liked it.

Not all ICS ROM's require GB bootloaders. I ran THS, and am now on vibranturk's AOKP and I came straight from 2.1
I think the issue was you're supposed to flash them twice. Well that fixed it for me. I dkbhave the gingerbread boot loaders now though

I attempted to root my SGS (which had stock Gingerbread Value 2.3.6) using a guide on the Snappyguides blogspot page (the system won't let me, as a newbie, post the URL).
Odin did its thing and then the Samsung Galaxy screen came up (just the white lettering, not the multicoloured animated S) and then... nothing. It just stayed like that for about five seconds, then the white Samsung Galaxy S came up again, then the blank screen ad infinitum.
I can access the download screen and I can access the recovery screen (which does seem to indicate that ClockworkMod v2.5.1.0 has been installed). The trouble is that none of the options seem to do anything.
I have tried searching the forum for similar problems and have read the sticky. The only answers I seem to have been able to find so far suggest flashing a new Rom.
Before I go this far, is flashing a new Rom really necessary in this instance? I have never done this procedure before, so I'm wary of messing things up even further. But obviously if the phone is past the point of no return as far as the stock Rom is concerned, then that'll be what I have to do.
I'd appreciate some advice before doing anything else to my phone though.
I now seem to be able to get the recovery menu options to respond, so maybe all is not lost. Have set it to root and it's currently converting to EXT4 and is about halfway through that.
I'm hoping once that's done, it'll be bootable.
If not, what do I need to do to make the SGS boot again? Is there any way of getting back to stock or can I only flash a stock rom back on?
Nope, still not booting. It just keeps going to the Samsung I9000 white lettering, stays there for five seconds, goes blank for five seconds, then the white lettering goes back and on, off like that forever.
So... anyone willing to help?

Sorry for being a n00b but I can't find anything in there that helps me. All I see is a lot of jargon about various roms, kernels and something called Voodoo.
I had a working phone with Gingerbread 2.3.6 Value. I added Clockworkmod via Odin. Now I can't get the phone to boot beyond the splash screen. It doesn't even get as far as the animated S, all I get is the splash screen going on and off every few seconds.
All I want is to get my phone working again, I really couldn't care less about custom roms etc.
If anyone can help this poor n00b, I'd be very grateful!
Incidentally, I've downloaded what I understand to be the factory rom for JW4 from sammobile.com - this is a 171MB zip file with just two files inside - a tar file called JW4_JW5_JW4 and a dll file called SS_DL.dll. I'm not really sure what to do with these to restore my phone via Odin. This is the kind of thing I need help with - the threads I've read so far don't make much sense to a poor confused n00b I'm afraid.

Well, I did get it working again in the end by using a factory rom. Thanks for your help anyway, W1nst0n.

Any suggestions on what may have caused the boot problem I had? Perhaps using a version of ClockworkMod that was incompatible with 2.3.6 Value?

OK before anyone flames me I already searched... and searched.... and searched & couldn't find the information I needed. I am only asking for assistance/input from members who are knowledgable on flashing ROMs & Kernals. Unfortunatly XDA is growing at a rate that makes searching almost unbearable.
OK to the reason for the post. I am finally looking to flash my AT&T Samsung Captivate to a custom ROM. No I don't need help flashing, got that covered. I am looking to upgrade to CM9 (Stable). I was also looking at maybe flashing the Devil Kernal also. I had originaly upgraded to ICS from Samsung via kies & rooted my phone. It ran fine with no problems for several months. Sometime a few weeks ago it started to random reboot or crash & reboot for no apparent reason. It finally locked up completly & could only use the 3 button to get it to move. I previously posted trying to get help with that here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957224). The only way I could get it to come back was to go into recovery, do a factory reset & wipe everything. So now I am back to 2.3.5 (2.6.35.7-I897UCkk4-CL614489). Also my phone is currently not rooed as a result of the wipeout. My phone is running like crap now after all that & what I consider fuctioning minimally.
So now the assistance/input portion of the thread. Because of the problems I had prior & the current state of the phone how should I proceed? Because of what I am looking to do with both the ROM & Kernal & being unrooted. Is there some app or PC program I should run to check my phone to make sure its not a hardware issue? Also should I get to a state & flash the kernal first then go to CM9? Do I need to flash the kernal at all? Forum posts are like a spiders web & some say yes, others no. My head feels like it is going to explode!
I am just looking to do this in the best way possible to achieve the best success. I unfortunatly don't have a lot of time to keep flashing ROMs all the time & funds are tight with family so buying a new S3 isn't going to happen either. Im hoping that someone knowledgable with the android system can help me do this right.
Thanks in advanced!
Chris
HELP!
OK so I took the plunge & screwed my phone up. I tried piecing info from about 20 different threads & somewhere it went wrong. If anyone actually reads this please take the 2 seconds to help. Another sites members already pissed me off with their "oh a noob" crap. I swear as much crap as people give the i-freaks its seeming more and more that the android community is becoming just as bad.
So here is where I am. I wiped my phone & tried to install CM9 (cm-9.1.0-captivatemtd). I installed it on the SD card via my pc/USB, booted into recovery, tried to install & got error. So I tried again using speedmod kernal (speedmod-kernel-i897-k13e-500hz) & got same results. The I flashed the corn kernal (CornKernel_UCKK4_v705) & made 100% sure was rooted, tried again, error. So I read yet ANOTHER thread that said to flash ICS CM9 you need a compatible kernal. So I flashed Devil (Devil3_1.1.3_ICS_cappy_CFS_BLN_CMC_20120807). There were actually 2 & ZERO info as to which of the 2 you were supposed to use. Well after I flashed it I got stuck on a boot loop & could not get into recovery after that. So I tried flashing back to Corn, now I am just stuck at the boot screen. I can though boot into recovery still.
So now I have no idea what to do. I have spent my whole day trying to get this done. I tried & I failed. Apprently easy for some, not for others. Someone please help me!
When u first flash the CM9 Rom it should reboot into the CM9's recovery within a few seconds. Then from that recovery just select install the CM9 Rom and it will do the full install of that rom. Should be good after that.
And what error are u getting when u have tried the install and it failed ??

Thank the gods I got a response! First off thank you 4-2ndtwin for even taking the time.
OK so I am still on the Corn Kernal which uses "SystemsCorps CwM- Based Recovery v5.1.0.7". Using the 3 button I selected I did the following
- Install zip from SD card
- Choose zip from SD card
- selected "cm-9.1.0-captivatemtd.zip
- selected yes "Install cm-9.1.0-captivatemtd.zip"
Then it says finding updates.... then opening updates...
The error flashes on the screen so quick I cant even read it before it goes back to the select location for zip. I did it several times and I did see something that said "E:Can't open sd card...." , "bad!". I had to do it like 20 times to get that much from it.
I am lost. I have been looking high and low & cant seem to figure this out.
If you can't help no worries. I am starting to price out new phones but really dont want to. But if you can that would be awesome!
R u copying the rom onto ur internal sd card and not the removable sdcard ?
Maybe a bad download of the Rom...Try fresh download or even a different Rom.
Have u ever seen the "Encryption Unsuccessful" error on ur phone ?? -- it is the cause/result of the internal sdcard gettin messed up. But people with that error are able to flash Roms from their external sd.

i installed it via usb/pc to the main sd, dont have a removable installed. its in the same spot as the "update.zip" is located from the ota/kies upgrade. I checked and apparently I am dislexic. the file size was wrong. I cant get my phone to boot anymore though. gets stuck on the corn start up & never goes past it. I tried using the odin3 one click & now my phone no matter what I do says "firmware upgrade failed" "try using recovery mode". so now I cant do anything.

*** Update ***
I finally got the Odin3 one click to work. I am now back to 2.1-update1, kernal is 2.6.29 [email protected] #2.
So I moved the CM9 zip file and verified 3 times the file size is correct.
So now do I just flash the kernal & then install from recovery or do I need to update to 2.3?
Im learning as I go, but damn its a painfull process! LOL

This problem is solved simply by booting into recovery and flashing the zip a second time.
You can flash from 2.1, but I recommend you be on Gingerbread bootloaders.
Well I am on the 2nd update & then should hopefully be able to try it all again. After this update I am going to flash the new kernal, root & then try the update again.... hopefully!
