Hey guys,
Just wanted to share an experience I had or am having. Just after midday yesterday, I was getting a bit annoyed with some of the lag in my Nexus 7, especially when compared to an N7 that I was using at the same time with only about 10 apps installed. Specifically, I noticed a difference when using the "lightweight" N7's Chrome which was noticeably faster than the Chrome in my "heavyweight" loaded up N7. So I went into the app data, and deleted the cache.
I had 204MB of cache. I know that often, if some things slow down in a specific app/application, deleting cache is sometimes an easy way for performance increases. But this one I wasn't expecting. These are the performance increases I've definitely noticed around the WHOLE OS:
- Coming from lock screen to launcher (I'm using Nova Launcher on both G.Nex and N7). It's now snappy without feeling like it's loading up.
- Multitasking launcher is quicker to respond. The apps in the list load much much quicker. Again, before it would load (populate the list) very close to 2 apps in just under a second (I would guess). And switching between apps is snappy again.
- Keyboard (I'm using Swiftkey) is generally quicker to appear. It was very slow in Chrome.
- App launcher, in and out, is now snappy again.
- Folders opening to show the apps in them is quicker.
- Google+ is quicker. Though I didn't use it between the latest update and deleting the cache.
- App launching is slightly faster overall.
My N7 now feels closer in speed to my G.Nex. I really have no idea why Chrome cache would make such a big difference. Before anyone asks, I haven't got the 4.1.2 update. Since the i/o of the memory controller sucks, I'm guessing Chrome was doing more than it needs to when I wasn't using it. My N7 is feeling very close to a lightweight N7. I am liking it.
Anyway, I hope at the very least it gives people some knowledge.

This will be an extremely noob question, but.. where do you delete the Chrome cache from? I just use ZD Box to clear all that stuff out for me. Seems to work okay I guess.

Thanks for the info, I'll try it right away
Mine is lagging too but not very often.
i use a cache cleaner for the google store. works great.
Reboot
I would always make sure you reboot your nexus 7 every so often to make sure that it keeps the ram free and ready to go when you want to use it quickly. I tried the cache and I noticed an increase in speed and snappiness thanks.
Excellent. The sluggish in notifications is now gone.

Cache always do make a very huge difference you should clear it at least once a week. I always do that daily. And not just for chrome do it for all apps. A very useful tool to do it faster is 1Tap Cleaner.
Same with any PC/Laptop or device.
You must be new to this kind of stuff or OSs cheers

I've seen this problem come up in other recent HTC devices, just thought I'd point it out for the Vivid as well.
I'm running LauncherPro with just a few icons, a low-resolution wallpaper, and no widgets. It runs silky smooth but the only gripe I have is that when opening the app drawer, 3D or standard, there's an incredible amount of stuttering and lagginess. Scrolling is not smooth, either.
The only other instance of crappy scrolling I have found on the phone so far is in GO SMS Pro; scrolling up and down conversations and also in the settings menus shows an apparent amount of lag. Nothing to cry about, but still there.
Otherwise, no performance issues at all on my device. Oh, and my previous complaint about the data speed being almost nonexistent - it's fixed. Turned out the phone was trying to sync all three of my Google accounts at one time.
Try a different Launcher? LauncherPro Might have an inherent flaw with HTC Devices possibly. Give GoLauncher a shot and see if there is any difference.
Yeah, I'll do that now. I personally dislike Go Launcher but I'll try a few others and see how they perform. I don't think a launcher would affect the lag in GO SMS, though.
EDIT: Lag is still present in Go, Zeam, and ADW launchers.
Interesting. Good to know. It is possible I suppose that they are not correctly optimized for the resolution and Screen size. Although if it is having problems with other HTC Devices my only conclusion is that it is because of some sort of Software issue between HTC and Custom Launchers.
Yeah that's all I could think of, how maybe the high resolution has something to do with it. Hopefully, that's right. Then it would just depend upon app makers to update their apps.
I see no lag what so ever on anything on this phone...
maybe ya got a bad unit?
Are you using GO SMS or any other launchers besides Sense?
This whole rom is slow in comparison to how my inspire rom runs....sad....but thats at&t for [email protected] software. But as soon as we have root,Ill be cooking my own for this, until then it can sit in the box...lol
WC
I have the lag you speak of and its driving me up the wall. Why did I give up my galaxy s2
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk
Calm down, it's not such a big deal. It could because of the greater resolution, much higher than the Samsungs. Not a hundred percent sure, but really. People need to stop being so nit picky and judgmental. It's a phone. In this world, they ALL have their quirks.
No lag what so ever here. Running Launcher Pro Paid Edition. I have 3 homescreens with 4 Columns and 5 Rows, and have 4 Widgets. 3D App Drawer with 5 columns.
Tried ADW EX and Go Launcher and found no lag present as well.
Once a debloated Rom is released everything will be resolved. But for me, haven't had any lag what so ever.
Hm. I wonder if the paid version would make any difference on my device. No lag in the drawer at all? What about in downloaded apps when scrolling?
No problem with anything on launcher. Smooth to me. I've came from an Atrix, Infuse, Inspire, SGS2 and notice no difference. So I've had my share to compare to.
I like the paid version because of the resizable Widgets.
I wonder then, what could be causing it on my phone..
I just tried the latest ics launcher, wow, the first few were kinda sluggish but the latest update is a breeze. There is no lag what so ever and the apps even open instantly with this launcher. I think ics luancher installs itself in a different way, i dont know why but it is smooth as butter.

I just changed the delay to instant, and forgot about it.

I just downloaded the new ICS Launcher as well. Seems they've updated it really recently because I tried it on Monday and it wasn't nearly this smooth. Drawer fly-in is amazing, but now the scrolling through the apps is laggy. The changelog did say it was completely rebuilt.
Maybe it's a memory thing? LauncherPro was the very first thing I ever installed on the phone out of the box, and I think I recall that before I installed any other apps, it was running flawlessly.. low memory maybe, but I only have like 10 other apps installed. I'm back to LP for now since I don't really mind the drawer lag that much. I just switched to the 3D version and fly-in is working fine, but now it's the scrolling that lags more than the regular drawer does lol. Can't win.
I know it sounds silly but it could be something as simple as an app icon causing the lag. I had installed something from the market and I noticed lag (this was on my Inspire) and after I uninstalled the app it went back to normal. I reinstalled the app and froze it with TiBu and the lag was still gone... unfroze and lag was back.
YMMV

Yeah I believe you, good point. I'm just going to go through deleting some apps and see if any of them are the problem.
UPDATE: Alright, I just did a factory reset on the phone. As soon as it booted up, I added my primary Gmail account. I went to the Market then closed it so it would update. Meanwhile, I synced my Google contacts, Gmail, and calendar. When that was done, I went back to the Market and downloaded GO SMS - the scrolling lag there still persists. Then, I downloaded LauncherPro (unpaid) and went through opening and exiting the app drawer multiple times - seems the lag is gone. Every now and then, opening it will show some stuttering, as will closing. But it's not every single time like it was before the reset. Perhaps it was something to do with memory? It does not lag on scrolling at all, only during fly-in and fly-out.
UPDATE 2: Never mind. Now that I have changed the default number of homescreens from 3 to 5, it lags every time on opening and closing. Just not on scrolling, yet.
So I reflashed my phone wiping data and cache, basically a new 1.3 Gingervolt Rom. Wiped both internal + external SD cards.
My phone becomes terribly slow after a period of time. Unbearable. Freezes, hard to navigate, slow, incessant irritation occurs from this.
Right after I use the App Killer app, the phone performs fine until all the apps load back up.
I don't have many apps and in fact deleted a bunch including google maps, news, etc. What am I doing. It was working fine before the flash (I flashed for other reasons not relevant here).
Any help preventing apps from jacking all my memory???
Use watchdog available in the android market, it'll tell you which apps are using up your resources and allow you to deal with them directly. Using app killers is pretty much counter productive because your system is just going to reload them based on their permissions.

Download Gemini app. It will allow you to change the permissions on apps that start on it's own to make them only start when you open it.

I would go to Gingervolt 1.2 I had the same issue for awhile. 1.3 came out, I got it, and with in a week my phone was stalling, lagging. I scaled back to 1.2 and it was awesome. If you don't have many apps, you should be fine. I have a ton, and a ton of those are ram ready programs (irritating, haven't gotten around to setting them to run on command only) and didn't have any issues myself for a long time. I got 1.3 again, and blitz, but I went with a newer supercharger, and my phone is acting dumb again. Gemini is good. It has a ram cleaner.
Thanks for the advice on the app. It helped a little but it still gets slow and I have to clean up the memory often. Over 100 megs worth.
The thing is I was running 1.3 just fine before I reflashed, so I dunno whats up. Really bugging me though, but I dont wanna keep flashing and flashing trying to fix the problem.
What would be the cleanest way to do a reflash?

Best way is with Gemini app. Hit the menu button and it's in the popup at the bottom. Or you can go to settings and clear each individual app.

Yep, the gemini app will clear the cache for each program that is running. You can also go into Recovery, and wipe cache, and wipe dalvik, sometimes the issue is with in the system itself.
I just recently got a nook hd+ and rooted it, I did three full wipes for safe measure using TWRP wiped everything but the sdcard prior to installing cm-10.1.3-RC2-ovation.
I noticed it had a good amount of lag when switching home screens, opening apps, opening the app drawer, recent apps ect.
And apps would run slow and close/freeze on me, for instance I was on chrome entering in a url and everything would freeze for a sec then inputs what I entered, and with only three to four tabs open and it keep closing on me, even the stock browser.
Also when I have any background apps running like say iHeartRadio playing in the background and say Facebook in the foreground after about 20 to 30 seconds sometimes instantly iHeartRadio will close with no errors or FC popups.
I am now running cm-10.1.3-ovation (Stable) since its release, did a clean installation (full wipe) and still having all the same problems,
Is this a known issue? Did I do something wrong? Anyone else experiencing the same?
Any help is very much appreciated
I have same issue....

I have had some problems, but most of them seem to be caused by chrome. Chrome clearly has stability issues as evidenced by the near daily updates. The browser that comes with CM works quite well.

So I removed chrome and wiped both dalvik cache and cache also used SD Maid, but still experiencing the same issues.
This thing runs so slow it doesn't seem right, I mean my hp touchpad runs loops around this and it's also running 10.1 not overclocked and it doesn't crash and hang all the time
I think with me being a noob at rooting I must have done something wrong when I rooted,

I'm experiencing approximately the same situation, the system is relatively slow and my browsers keep crazing (Firefox, chrome and Opera).
But I also have another problem : the keyboard layout sometimes doesn't appear when needed, is anyone having the same issue?

i have the 32gb hd+ and don't recall having those issues but i used CWM since that's what all the devs seem to prefer. Also , i switched to the tweaked xperia rom that was recently updated. i feeel like it's snappier and i like the tweaks he made to it.

I did when I first installed CM, but haven't really noticed it as of recently, plus I use hackers keyboard from the play store, not sure if it was the stock keyboard or it just started working better over time (if that's possible :-\)
One of the first things I did when I got this device was switch it to art before loading all of my apps, settings, etc. I could not believe how slow the phone was opening apps and running in general. Also, even though we have root, titanium backup would just not function. I wasn't able to freeze anything.
As I was about to return the phone and also after searching for a tibu fix I got the notion to switch back to Dalvik.
Problem solved. Tibu works, and the phone runs fast as it should in 2014.
I had read some people attesting to the great performance of art in some threads, so I guess ymmv, but for me switching back to Dalvik really turned things around.
I guess maybe the samsung engineers knew this in advance - maybe that is why the unlocked/tampered icon appears at the boot screen when in art runtime?
Either way. Hopefully this turns some people back on to the device who may have been on the verge of tossing it out a window as I was.

I was in ART mode as well and noticed some small issues with things not running right. I changed back to Dalvik and everything seems to run as it should now.
Same here, imo it actually runs slower than Dalvil, plus I had some issues with Titanium Back up and some other apps. Back to Dalvik. Phones runs great.

I've been running ART for some time with no noticeable issues. I've heard some apps have issues with ART but I haven't seen anything that bothered me. Perhaps your combo of apps did not agree with ART but for me it is fine.
same issues with ART
When I switched,:crying: chrome, my banking apps, Sirius radio and a few others were not happy campers. So I wood always send crash reports.
Take note how long apps take to open. The try switch runtime and compare.
For me the only app that wouldn't work as intended was tibu, but the actual speed of even opening up common apps such as Gmail was discouraging. On dalvik it seems to be almost instantaneous if not instantaneous.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk
I read this thread thinking I was on art. I then checked my settings to see I was on dalvik, and after changing it feels zippier. Idk I feel art is nicer imo.

I just realized that after trying to switch to art and having the reboot, that ART doesn't stick and automatically switches back to Davlik. Is anyone else having this problem?

I started running some test early on as well

I just realized that when running ART, private mode will no longer work
I when I activate the "art" so the phone overheats to the point it begins to smell of overheated circuit on the screen. It is something that the mobile force to migrate.
Thought that the battery would explode or something.
and many applications fail, unfortunately the android system is not ready for art, no support for art, is very poor,
I returned to dalvik and holy remedy. :highfive:
My phone won't even switch to art.

Same here. ART working fine for me, and it is a noticeable improvement in app startup speed and execution. I think it does come down to the apps you currently are running. I prefer ART over Dalvik and run all my Samsung devices with it. YMMV

I have to agree, my phone has been running art for over a week, and it is faster, everything works fine.
It has to be an app or something that is not optimized.
I do not run xposed or really any of its modules, and remember not every APP is made to run on ART yet. With the entrance of L
this will in the future force app developers to make the apps so they have to to run on art..
I too have had major issues with ART. It creeps along and at times was very unresponsive. I believe several people are right in that there are some apps out there not optimized for ART yet, but will be forced to if they want to survive in Android L.
Having problems with my phone a good few months after I updated to L. After initial problems I wiped the cache after update and it made a great difference and behaved nicely.
But now it seems to have gotten very sluggish and a cache wipe makes only a very short term difference (maybe a few days to a week). It seems especially sluggish responding to Home button, with the icons for phone, SMS etc. sometimes taking up a good 10s, maybe even more, to appear.
I have 1.36GB storage free and c.283MB of RAM free currently.
Any ideas or any apps that can help diagnose?

It could be a RAM problem. If you have root try greenifying some apps, and perhaps deativate Google Now or always listening options. Try also other launcher, like Nova Launcher...

Some apps don't work with root. For example Banking apps. So there are at least 1 reason to not install a custom ROM.
Get rid of Xposed, Facebook and Facebook messenger. Use the mobile version of them.
See if there's too many apps running in background. You barelly have 1.5 GB of free space, so i assume you've plenty of apps installed. Also try to Uninstall Updates and Disable some of them under Settings > Application. You can reclaim some space and get rid of bloat.
