Today we have a super stable ICS and a nearly stable JB but why in a heck do people still use and cook GB and Froyo ROMS? I've even seen Eclair phones gingerbread is slow and the 3D driver is terrible. I wanted to test and went back to cm7 and played asphalt 6 and it was laggy as heck! It only gave up to 10fps! Not good, plus it shows a wrong radio bar cause when I have one bar and want to call, a message pops up saying I have no signal. So guys can you explain to me why most people still running GB and below?

Because: Samsung camera, music player, messaging app, contacts with slide function, memo etc. I'm still running GB only because I like the Touchwiz apps, and of course I'd upgrade to ICS/JB if they were possible to function..

But they do function! They're better than GB in many ways! Speed and stability and memory management are the key concepts.

maybe some people prefer stock features. Many people say samsung camera takes better photos (driver?), and I myself miss the stock music player even when I've been using ics and jb... and we still don't have any FM radio now

The stock music player is stupid because it doesn't have a filtering feature thus it plays every music file (ringtones, alarms, recordings etc.) And that's annoying.

there are heaps of pretty reliable GB roms, the battery life also seems to be better but probably due to less CPU usage.

I just noticed something funny.
If you are listening to music using Windows Media Player on your mobile device (WMC_Shekhar) and you open up the camera application, it will speed your music up by 1.5x, 2x, without "chipmonking".
It seems to be due to I/O issues, both apps hogging the same resources.
Try it for lols. Get a rock song, one that you always thought would sound much more awesome slightly faster (like pop rock) and then open your camera application.
Many lols will be had!
Yeah..i have also noticed this ..its been like this since WM 6..You wanna know some thing else
When you are flashing the rom i.e Running the Upgrade Utility on your computer..first Open up WMP and play any of your fav songs..the Upgrade will only take about 15 minutes..I have tried it,shekhar, buzz all have tried it
Wow, that is truly bizarre.
I will have to try it, thanks for letting us know
I use Winamp for music, I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a way to use the volume buttons to control music? I know it's possible on Cyanogen mod, but I'm using serendipity for now until CM is stable...does anyone know if music controls with volume buttons is possible?
is there anything on serendipity function wise that cm7 doesnt have that you use/need. because if not cm7 has themes that are close to serendipity and cm7 is actually pretty stable at this point, im using it and i love it.
my issue with CM7 was that battery life was nowhere where I'd like i to be, the headset button isn't functional, and the camera is pretty much unusual/****ty.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the customizability of CM7, and intend to flash it once it's stable, but I'd like to find good replacements for things like Samsung's contact/calander apps, which I think are better than default

Wifi fixed yet?
CM7
On my first full day of CM7 I got better battery life than I did with Perception 10.3
Camera 360 has a free app works perfectly and takes pictures at full resolution, with a normal mode so you don't have to have picture effects, but I don't know about a video recorder replacement yet though.
I just upgraded to the Epic 4G
Running SyndicatedROM Frozen 1.1 and it does everything
Now, what to do with my old phone...
Needless to say, my old phone is the HTC Hero CDMA, and it is no longer connected. Really sad since it's a perfectly good phone. I've been having trouble re-gifting to my friends because they are too cheap for Sprint, and they don't like the concept of texting on a (small) touch-screen phone.
I have been using it as my primary music player to off-load the battery drain on my Epic. However, it bugs me to use it *just* as a music player. With that said, what are some other uses for a disconnected Hero?
BTW - I'm running CyanogenMod7 rc4. And before you mention it, I know the stable release is out. I'll get around to it... eventually.
I use mine as a remote for my XMBC media player ( converted acer revo ) I can view all my media and tv shows etc on the hero's screen.. its nice..

I have an old deactivated one that I use for mostly a music player / newsreader / game player on the road. It also occasionally functions as a remote for my PC/TV and a testbed for ROMs that I don't want to flash on my new Hero. (The old one got dropped in the snow and the speaker no longer works; though the headphone jack works fine... hence the replacement).
I have thought about getting a VoIP client set up on it (not sure if Google Voice would work with a deactivated phone or not) to use as a "home phone".
It does seem like a shame, though, huh? All that wasted glory.

I just use mine for music. I found that the Hero doesn't work well as a gaming device since it lacks a decent GPU, and reading is fairly difficult, especially now that I'm use to to the Epic. In speaking of test beds, do you have any ROM recommendations for me? I'm looking for something lightweight; just for music, and a back-up phone.

That would be a great idea! I'll look into it. The Hero was great while it lasted. The perfect alternative to the iPhone that wasn't buggy as hell *cough, cough**Moment!**cough*

The gingerbread ROM builds started out as awesome and have only gotten better. I run aosp's 3/26 build with the s0be 2.6.35 #5 kernel on both of my Hero's and it is a million times snappier and stable than stock ever was. The 3/26 build is very small and let's you choose which Google apps to install, so it can be kept pretty lean.
Otherwise I'll just flash a new ROM on the old one first to test it out before putting it on my new one.

Yeah yeah yeah... I should upgrade. I really should.
Another suggestion for music; if you're short on sd card space and will have WiFi access with your Hero, check out Subsonic music streamer. It lets you stream your music through the web and they have an Android app.

That's a sweet idea and thanks for the app too. Hopefully the EVO 3d doesn't use too much of my SD card memory but ill keep my hero for experimental purposes. Because I plan on learning how to fully theme Roms this summer , so the Hero will be a good experimenting phone.
From my Gingerbread Hero.
Hey guys
I have recently rooted and flashed Semaphore ICS (4.0.4) on to my i9000. (this was such a hard task )
Anyways I followed the instructions; installed Google Apps etc.
However, only now, compared to the GB Music Player, is really really ugly and crappy?
Is there anyway to update this app or get the old one back?
I don't really want to use any other music player but will if i have to. I'm using Rocket Player as a substitute atm, but not really liking it...
On the GB gallery i was able to preview GIFS, now on the new OS, I cannot. Any fixes?
Thanks
So I have been trying to see videos on Youtube about the Galaxy Tab S.. But they are all unboxing videos, reviews, tips and tricks, quick comparisons to iPads, etc.. All brand new with no apps or customizations on them. There are a few gaming ones, but they only stay in the games.
What I am looking for.. and what would probably help others wanting to do the switch from iPad (or even get the Tab S as their first tablet), are videos showing every day use. Remoting into desktops, doing document editing, photo editing, etc with the tablet already fully themed and customized. Heck, even a custom ROM would be great.
I would love to see the speed that this tablet can open and close apps, doing work, etc..
I looked all over YouTube for videos like this, but have come up empty every time.
Well.. We have CM11 and beta of CM12! They both run smooth and do not lag like stock touchwiz. But on stock roms they tend to lag on easy tasks like scrolling. But installing a stock custom rom like iron rom doesnt lag in the homescreen or anything. I use my tablet for school so yeah I use it everyday. I also themed the mine with discreet blue theme and installed a bunch of apps.
As for the screen its perfect even outside its still visble. As for everday use of editing, gaming, sending emails and all that.. It does it fast and easy. There tends to be a few lag spikes apon loading large apps but only for a bit. I too switched from an iPad and its a ton faster in loading times. But opening a ton of apps at the same time ex 10 apps can freeze and even reboot by itself. Doing work/typing documents does the job with no lags and handcom office is good for that.
Anyway if you have more questions ask me! I have a youtube channel but I am unprofessional at them lol. But installing a custom rom fixes most issues of lag than stock rom. CM11 or irom is a must have for me. Hope this helps!

Thanks! Do you have a video on your channel like what I asked? Showing everyday use? Mutlti tasking, not just with the default apps that come on the tablet?
Linky?
