That's what I use. Works for me.
After installing adfree make sure you download and install the hosts then reboot your phone.

I am pretty sure that adfree doesn't work for youtube ads. I don't think there's anything you can do about the ads since they come from youtube directly as opposed to an advertisement service server (which is how it works on most websites and apps).

I'm using AdAway, much better than AdFree : (sorry, can't post links now, just search in Google Play "AdAway")

I use adfree never seen ads on youtube

do you use youtube's app or by just entering m.youtube.com?

I'm using AdAway and I haven't seen a YouTube ad.

AdAway does the trick
I installed AdAway a couple days ago and i haven't seen a single ad on my tablet since. It appears to be working a lot better than Adblock Plus for Android.

The youtube apk has no ads if im not mistaken. Only www.youtube.com has them.
By installing any adblocker and useing either FireFox or Google Chrome you can block these ads

Without an ad blocker, the YouTube app will often play video ads before videos.

You need rooted device and app adaway or adfree.

If you must use it because you don't have root OK but it's not good...
It'll block only one small part of ads...

If there is an app that you use mostly offline and it shows ads, using No root firewall will stop it from showing ads. If the app needs internet to function (example a browser or something that needs synching) this will not stop ads in that as it simply turns off ads on a per app basis. It is all or nothing for a app. Good for most of the apps.

Ad Blocker?

I have become accustomed to not seeing ads through out the user experience. I was using a flashable ad blocker from the N5 thread but I guess its not 5.0 compatible.. You guys have any suggestions.

Adaway apk has worked on lollipop with my n5 (n6 is being delivered soon). I just wish I could find something for you tube now.
Where is adaway available for download? Yeah I agree I watch a lot of YouTube and I used to have an Xposed module that blocked all add in the app, it was sweet.

Huh? AdAway is working for me. I downloaded it from f-droid. I just ran an Ookla Speedtest and no ads came up
I prefer using https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway ... AdFree is nice but blocks a lot of the Slickdeals links for me, yeah theres whitelisting but Slickdeals has a lot of redirecting links whereas AdAway is less aggressive on that part and gets most of the ads.
I see @simms22 finally got his N6
I use adaway on my N6 and it works great.
Anyway to block youtube app ads? I used to use xposed module for this, but...

Works fine here.
Whitelist *.viglink.com
There used to be this great xposed module that removed the ad spaces in apps. I really hope that comes to L somehow.

Whitelist redirect.viglink.com on AdAway then reapply the list.
Out of curiosity, can you run an adblocker (like adaway), have it modify the hostfile, then unroot and still have ads blocked? Or do you need to keep root for the changes to remain in effect?

You can unroot after making the change. You would have to re-root to update or modify the hosts file again.

Chromecast adblock

Someone please make an ad block for Chromecast.
I dont think this would be possible if my understanding of how the chromecast works is correct. Once you cast things like youtube, the job of recieving the content is left to the chromecast, so youd need an app that would remove ads then cast that. Otherwise the only thing i could think of is if you made some kind of ad blocking proxy like what DD-WRT does and run your chromecast through that, quitr certain that needs a rooted chromecast though. Of course, an even better solution would be, at least in youtube's case, for google to fix the implementation of ads, at present the skip ad button is shown onthe tv screen, so you are forced to watch the sometimes 5 minute long ads. I may be completely incorrect in saying this, as i said, this is just from my understanding.

Using the official youtube app on my Nexus 6, I'm getting frequent ads when watching youtube videos via chromecast. But now I've implemented an ad-blocker using a raspberry pi as an ad-blocking dns server (search for "pi-hole" if interested).

It appears to have started very recently. Every video I get a damn ad now. It's not related to the current version as I'm on v5. I don't use Xposed, so I guess I'm screwed.

I dont think you'd be unscrewed using xposed anyway, the update for the module didnt actually fix the ads, i got a 12 minute long ad the other day.

All the requests are SSL so you'd need to root your CC and set it to use the proxy. Also apparently YouTube adblock DOES work you just need an old YouTube version, so it would probably be easier to give that a shot as long as you're on with using an old version.

Okay. Thank you. I'll give an old version a try. On that note does anyone know how to make updates for apps not show up on the play store? There's a couple apps I like to stay on old version with for various reasons like this.

If I remember correctly you go to manage apps, all find the app you're hunting for click on it and it'll open app info
and just under force stop you should have the option to untick the checkmark for show notifications.
Hope it helps you
Hey guys, just noticed something, chromecast doesn't or rarely plays ads before a video that has low view count so if someone could spoof the nr. Of views the video actually has naybe chromecast would not think to play ads, anyways, just putting it out here

The reason for that is probably due to the fact that those videos are not from partnered channels, unless somethings changed recently ads only show on partnered channels.
Sent from my Tw5ted SM-G900A using Tapatalk
So isn't there a way to spoof youtube into thinking all videos aren't partnered? Just brainstorming

AD blocker apps ?

Hello i currently root my mxpe 6.0.1 and im using adaway and minminguard but the ads on google chrome are killing me
any suggestion on how to remove them ?
Adaway uses sources like mvps, which block big known ad sources.
You would have to get the source for the ad and report it to one of the adaway blocking services like mvps.
Or
Use greasemonkey for chrome and block that way.
https://www.google.com/search?q=gre...9i57.8582j0j4&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8
Assuming you have adaway enabled, lol.
And after hosts file update, hard reboot or shutdown and bootup.
I use Adblock Plus it's a third party app but it works wonders.

well the most simple way is to use AdAway. its really easy to use. and i get no special DNS or VPN settings (whitch is very battery consuming)

AdAway all the way

I use "Rbrowser" instead which has as well adblocker and is the only browser that does not have a scrolling lag on my MX Pure. Very happy with it.

You can add the url base domain to your Adaway white list, such as:
ad.doubleclick.net
googleadservices.com
da.feedsportal.com
and others...

I used to use AdAway but too often it would block legitimate sites I was trying to get to. I then started using the Adblock Plus browser which was good for a while but has really gone down hill lately.
I'm now using FireFox with the Adblock Plus extension and while it isn't perfect, it most closely suits my needs.
you guys have an app to block youtube ads? I have installed youtube adaway exposed and was working flawlessly but since a few weeks stopped working and now youtube ads are all over the place. any suggestion?
