As I understand it 247 is JB ready. 246 is not. This could mean we aren't getting JB. Not officially anyway. Kinda sucks. I thought they would try to treat us better.

Exactly. VZW doesn't make money from software upgrades, they make money by selling phones (then charging a mint for service). You want the newer features? Buy a newer phone. I'm surprised we even got this TBH.

I don't know if 246 (or 247 for that matter) was ever available as a leak. I've been running 232 until two days ago. Now I'm stock, waiting for the soak.
If it hasn't been leaked you'll have to wait until someone from the soak group makes 246 available. That will probably be tomorrow since I've heard that's when the soak test starts.
I beg to differ. If verizon could keep you on their plan without selling you a new subsidized phone they would even make more money.

While that is true, their strategy is to get people to buy more subsidized phones so they get kicked off unlimited and into shared data plans. These new plans are liquid gold for VZ. They were supposedly all over that on their quarterly investors conference call this morning.

Both were leaked, didn't see 246 posted anywhere but I know you can get 247 from house of bionic ... running it now
Would be nice of moto if they leaked a JB build at some point even though vzw would never approve it.
Edit: I could be wrong about 246 being leaked.

.246 was also leaked
Leaks were available all the way to .247. Currently House of Bionic is recommending that everyone on .247 go back to .246. If you are on .242, DON'T go on any higher leak because you can't go back. I'm reverting back to .246, but I've been stranded for a while. :silly:

New security was implemented in the .235 leak. .232 was as high as you could go to be able to revert back to .905
If you are on .235-.247 you can use House of Bionic to go back and forth in these builds. If you are .235 or higher and try to go back to .905 or .232 you will brick your phone!!
If you are .235-.247 it is recommended to go to .246 to be back on the OTA update path.

Motorola does not list the Droid 3 on any of their roadmaps...it is like they just forgot about the device.
I would not hold my breath but at this point there is no official response in ether direction.
We are all waiting for Motorola to issue some updates... I think they are going to make the announcements all at the same time, of which phones will and won't make the upgrade.
D3 is in good shape though, it runs almost the same CPU and GPU as Galaxy Nexus, just has half the memory. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Even if Moto and Verizon don't officially give ICS to the D3, you can bet that shortly after they release it for either the Razr or Bionic that it will be ported in it's "blurred" setup to the D3.

Keep in mind that if they don't release it for the Droid 3, the "ported" version based from those won't get the new kernel that those devices get along with their ICS upgrade...
If they release just one of the phones Hash supports for ICS with a camera, that is all we really need anyway.

I wonder if they had to build their new blur before making the actual ICS builds for their phones.
Still I'm happy that they have at least acknowledged that the D3 might get updated to ICS maybe someday possibly a remote chance.
Interesting...the Motorola Razr is in "Development" status but the Droid Razr is still only "Evaluation and Planning" stage....
Verizon must be a big part of the problem....as even the 3G Xoom's are "Evaluation and Planning" while the WiFi Xoom already has it (and non-us WiFi are in Development).

I noticed the same thing... It looks like for the first time Canada might be getting something quicker than the US... (At least in the RAZR ICS upgrade department).
All I care about is that the RAZR upgrade code leaks so that way we can get the cameras working within CM9, then maybe I'll jump ship from stock.

that still really doesn't help as Hashcode has pointed out the dependencies the ICS camera has on the ION driver inside the ICS kernel....which are not present in the Gingerbread kernel that will still be running on the Droid 3 with CM9.
These dependencies won't go away on a Razr ICS camera....as the kernel will be getting updated along with the OS when they push it out.

I agree. All Verizon dual-core phones - even the Bionic, Razr series and D4 - are the same status. I think that Verizon's approval process and bloatware install requirements have become too unpredictable to allow for a definitive upgrade period.
It wouldn't surprise me if a working ics blur rom existed at moto and was stable. The hurdle has always been verizon. I can't understand the forced bloat concept considering most users don't use it and will root now to rid themselves of it.

So I just found a leaked screen shot of Verizon's upgrade schedule to ICS!
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/04/verizon-ic-update-schedule-leaked/
So the HTC Rezound should get the OTA next week on May 9th. The RAZR and RAZR MAXX will be getting the OTA in three weeks. But no mention of the Bionic... Oh yea, they decided to give us the .904 update while they finalized ICS for the newer phones. We just got shafted again.
Then again, its tough to know what is actually going on because they have to keep everything confidential. I doubt this would be case but if VZW and MOTO were having issues with ICS on the Bionic, I would have no problem giving them more time to make it right. But from what we've seen, it doesn't appear to be that innocent.
You do realize that we are a low priority because the phone isn't selling well, right? RAZR's the front-runner, making it a priority. We'll get ours by July, if we're lucky.
And yes, I am being a little pessimistic, but Motorola and Verizon need to step up their game already. Moto's making too many devices and Verizon's forcing bloat too much. That's what is slowing us down.
re
I don't understand what is really taking that long. Development will continue on the latest and greatest but that doesn't mean we should get the shaft. I picked the bionic over the thunderbolt because I like the slightly thinner phone and longer screen even though it cost more.didn't think I would be buying a dead phone in terms of development. I should have just got the razr
I have Rooted 904 update Safestrap dual boot eclipse 2.2
My view is the Bionic is a phone they would prefer to forget. The Razrs are the hot phones so they get the priority. Maybe I woukd complain much more without ICS ROMs available.
It's interesting that on Moto's site the RAZR's are all listed as ICS upgradeable but the Bionic is not.??

if you click on the motorola support forums link where it says that it takes u to a page explaining which devices are getting ics and the bionic among others is on that list but yeah :/ it will prolly be a while. maybe we can get lucky with cheesecake.
Guys why is this even a topic. It's been confirmed we are getting official ICS by several sources along with moto. The ICS source code was released a little over a month ago, that helped out the devs. We have a solid device for the price and we have devs good enough to keep us happy and get us through until mid to late summer when we get the real thing.
ICS source was released 6 months ago. That doesn't help matters since we don't have an official release, an unlocked bootloader, or a real ICS kernel, however.
So guys, what do you all think ? What are our chances to receive ics from motorola? I would say we got some pretty decent chances since our phone is "Evaluation & Planning" on https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c it could only take a while... But i still believe in it, what are your oppinion guys ? Will we get it after all ?
I highly doubt that the D3 will ever see an official ICS update. We were lucky to get .906 to be honest. The closest thing we will get is CM9 and AOKP. But hey, there's always that little glimmer of chance though.

I think Verizon won't allow the D3 to be updated. They are focusing more on 4G LTE devices as well as devices that have at least 1 Gig of ram. Since the D3 has neither, I doubt that we will see ICS officially released from Verizon.

But do those devices have heavy bloatware and a heavy custom UI like MotoBlur running on them? These are things that you have to take into consideration. There's still hope for an official ICS update, but I just don't see it happening.
Our phone runs just fine without them. All we need is hardware codecs and the big stuff with ICS will be pretty much done.

I'm not talking about custom roms like CM9 or AOKP. I am talking about a stock ICS rom from Motorola and Verizon for the D3. An official update. I am simply stating that since the D3 has no 4G LTE and only 512 mb of ram, Verizon and Motorola most likely won't bother updating it to ICS. Also, being that it has 512 mb of ram, ICS, along with all of Verizon's bloat and Motorola's custom UI, won't run as smoothly as a custom rom.
Isn't there a internal moto dev version of ics that supposedly ran beautifully? thought I remembered reading about that a while ago.

I've got a feeling Moto will be working on D3/Milestone3/XT883 or whatever its called and possibly release the files for ours or similar devices, but the sticking point will be Verizon.
Shouldn't matter if the other carriers/similar devices get ICS, Id guess porting what we'd need wouldn't be a problem then

An HTC Droid Incredible 2 update has already been announced, so it's not that. (The DInc 2 has 768 MB of RAM; perhaps that is enough to make a difference? I doubt it, though.)
It's probably 50/50. Clearly Moto will focus on getting the Razrs, Bionic and Droid 4 updated before they move on to other phones. The D3 seems a natural upgrade - unlike the X2, it has the same processor as those other phones; it's basically a Bionic with a keyboard, no LTE, "world phone" capability and half the RAM. Is that enough to make it a difficult upgrade? I guess we'll know when we know.

So, today I got bored and decided to pick Moto's brains a bit about this topic. (Yes, this is what I did with my free time today.)
I got slightly off topic myself do to his ignorance, but in the end it went well I'd say... You can pretty much skip to the last 5 or so lines.
Code:
Rez: Hi, my name is Rez. How may I help you?
Me: I just have a question about the Droid 3 getting Andorid 4.0. I see that older devices (from other companies) with less powerful internals are scheduled to receive an ICS update. Is it likely that the D3 will receive 4.0?
Rez: That's a good question, Redsox985. Let me check that out for you.
Me: Thanks.
Rez: Thank you for waiting, Redsox985.
Rez: I can see that the ICS update for Droid 3 is under evaluation and planning. We will keep you posted thru our website for updates.
Rez: https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
Me: What does "evaluation and planning" mean? Can you say if it'll happen or not based on this?
Rez: We are waiting for information about the update, Redsox985. It is pending. It should pushed thru since we send updates to most of the Motorola
smartphones from time to time.
Me: Also, I know that independent developers have made a handful of ROMs built from source that run smoothly on the D3. Is it a matter of if the phone can run ICS or is its age an issue?
Rez: Are you referring to a different software for Droid 3 or get the phone rooted, is that what you mean?
Me: Yes, by rooting, you can flash independently built ICS rom's from android source. They run on the phone, but some issues exist between the gingerbread kernel (locked boot loader) and ICS features like hardware acceleration, video camera, and flash.
Me: Adobe flash that is.
Rez: The problem later is the phone will not be able to receive updates once the phone is rooted.
Me: It can be unrooted and restored back to stock software with an SBF.
Rez: It can be unrooted but the updates will not work anymore.
Me: I just did it. I was running 5.6.890 rooted with an open source ICS rom. The 5.7.906 update had started to be pushed OTA. I ran RSD Lite and restored the phone to box stock 5.6.890. I then accepted and installed the OTA. Then re-rooted it.
Rez: It may be working for now but we don't the after-effect of it. I have that case earlier that his phone was rooted before. After trying to unroot it, the phone will not boot up. He's trying to update the phone but it cannot be updated anymore since the phone is not on. suggested to send it to our repair center but I set an expectation to him that it will be considered to be out of warranty already.
Me: RSD Lite will flash all partitions of the phone (radio, system, etc.) back to box stock as if it was purchased new.
Rez: That's a good experiment, Redsox985. How do you want me to help you with that?
Me: It's not an experiment. It works. I just used it. It unrooted my phone and flashed all partitions allowing me to accept the latest OTA.
Me: If I'm able to return to the OTA path, then how could receiving an ICS update (if one even comes) be any different?
Rez: ICS has not yet been announced, we don't have the list of enhancements yet what are included on the ICS. We don't have the information also what will not work once the ICS is installed on the phone that was rooted. We will keep you posted thru our website at www.motorola com for updates.
Me: It can be unrooted and restored to stock software to the point where an OTA will not be able to detect anything different. It's possible to flash box stock software to the phone. It rewrites all partitions.
Rez: I see. That's a good idea.
Me: So, can you speak on the likelihood of the D3 receiving official ICS? It can run it, it's been done. Why won't Moto even consider it?
Rez: We are following what's being updated to us. As I mentioned earlier the ICS update for Droid 3 is under evaluation and planning. If you have successfully done it by rooting, it's not from us.
Me: I know it's not official, I'm just wondering why it hasn't been done being that it's possible.
Rez: Because we are working on updates thoroughly. We don't want that we just send out updates with glitches.
Me: So, ICS for the D3 is being worked on?
Rez: Yes. That's part of evaluation.
Me: But it's possible that the update will just be killed internally before it ever is released?
Rez: I cant say that unless it happens. I don't want to give any false hopes. Because we are also waiting for that update.
Me: Can you estimate the D3's chances of receiving ICS?
Rez: 90 per cent it will receive it.
Me: Wow. I'm impressed. Thanks.
Me: Is that a hopeful or conservative estimate?
Rez: Hopeful.

I came from the world of AT&T and Samsung. I will be stoked when we actually get it. Until then, I will assume "Early Q3 of this year" means late Q3 of next year, lol.
I'm currently using gummy ics and it works perfectly. I think I can manage a little while longer without an "official" build including all of Verizon's bloat.
Sent from my XT875 using xda premium
GummyICS is nice, but no ICS ROMs for the Bionic have hardware acceleration, HDMI, or properly working data (as in without the random drops). Stuff always leaks before it gets released, so I'm sure there will be a rooted, bloat-free ROM before it gets officially released by Motorola. Also, now that the Googlerola deal went through, maybe it will happen a little quicker...and a little less bloaty.
I did notice the lack of hardware acceleration when trying to use chrome beta, but I have yet to experience data drops on both 3g and 4g.

GummyICS is nice, but no ICS ROMs for the Bionic have hardware acceleration, HDMI, or properly working data (as in without the random drops). The bloat is mostly from Verizon, only some from Motorola (Motocast, motoactv, etc...). So the Googlerola deal likely won't fix that particular issue.

Im Looking forward to the Lapdock Update the most. It would be nice to gain some speed on this little bad boy.
Won't the next Android version be announced by then? That would kinda be a downer considering we're still waiting for ICS. To me it doesn't matter that much at this point because there are already Gingerbread roms out there with an ICS theme. Not exactly like the real thing but for me it's good enough, heh.

I like how they call it zumocast on the bionic but motocast on some of their other devices. I wouldn't consider it bloat though. Every phone should come with an app like that. It's pretty useful.

You do realize there is another post about this topic? That was what sucked about the bionic community, we kept getting repeat posts.

Your right. The threads should be merged but to be fair mine was made before the other one, Although just by a few minutes so its no ones fault. The other op probably didnt see this one because of the small window frame.
Ponder This Though

Owned, son!
Sorry I couldn't resist. But still, I've been following the wait on ICS since I got my bionic back in October, and ICS will be welcome when it finally gets here. Id follow cheesecake myself but I hate stock blur with a passion, so I follow XDA.

If we do not get ICS soon, i would not be surprised if the Bionic "fell through the cracks".
You should be surprised, since engineering builds are already being spread around. Doesn't take *too much* more than getting approval and changing the signatures to make it a user build.
Honestly all we need is 1 leak with a good kernel and we can switch over to CM9 through Bootstrap or Safestrap into CM9 and have a working camera/video and hardware acceleration.
Android Police article
Not that most people here are really bothered since you use the custom ROMs, but now this means there will be an official Jelly Bean template to make a sweet CM JB ROM off of.
Hopefully they won't cancel the upgrade.
Do you think we will get 4.1 after 4.2 is released?

Agreed. They might keep their promise, but most likely release 4.1 long after 4.2 is already out.
IMO they need to quit bowing to the carriers. Make their handsets according to the original principles of the Open Handset Alliance - fully open source, fully unlocked. If the carriers don't like it, tough, let them make their own damn locked phones. After enough consumers get burned by the lock-in, they'll all start choosing unlocked phones.

I ordered already other device, not sure if I'll 100% move to it, but I plan to get rid of moto after that happened with my previous device motorola photon. I couldn't wait more and decided to try droid 4. After this politics I plan to go out of moto once I'll find good device. Hope, that found already.
I'm posting this from a D4 on Jellybeans but I'm still glad to hear this. I think it will go a long way towards making people feel they can trust Motorola again, which as we can see from a few other posts here many people do not.
The real question in my mind is, what will come first, the DROID 5 or the official JB upgrade? What I want to see are updates the drop shortly after AOSP does, not a year later...

Motorola says that the Droid 4 will get jb some time next year. I'm sure it will be around the same time the five comes out. The sad thing is that the five will probably just be a razr m with a keyboard ):

At this point I would be happy with that. 4.3 in screen + S4 (AKA the Photon Q)= fine with me.
The main Droid line, like nexus, was supposed to stand for quality and top of the line specs not this last years tech and rebranded bs that it is now. The keyboard is the only thing the series has going for it

now they're claiming droid 4 *might* get 4.2.2 in q3 or q4 2013
I wonder if the old cheesecake method would work if Motorola does start working on official Jellybean updates.

I don't even care about the JB update at this point, with the JB ROM's we have already working near perfectly

I'd ditch moto in a heartbeat if there was another phone with a physical keyboard. Too bad there'll never be a nexus with a keyboard.

I don't mean to change the subject but which ROM are you using? The cyanogen 10 has no camera, Bluetooth issues, and crashes (not that I'm complaining, I'm grateful to even have it), but I thought that was pretty much the situation for all of them at the moment?

I'd be more than satisfied to get 4.1 in Q1 of next year.

I'm pretty sure this article was labeled as untrue rumor. Android 4.2.2 won't be a the next codename of android. I'm pretty sure we will be getting JB 4.1 since that's what Moto promised to us earlier this year. Honestly, I don't think any devices with less than 2GB will get Android 4.2 other than stock Android devices.
It's been a good run the the D4, I'm pretty happy with CM10 on here right now, much less bloated! I just miss the power off animation (CRT)...
