The ROM you chose will have instructions (developers page) as what you need to do . And yes you may need to do the wipes and doing that will not erase your messages or contacts only formating SD card will do that

you need to reflash again and sometimes it is not nescesarry to wipa all data, but it is always recomended. If you want a smooth and fast effect it is best to do clean install. You can always back up your msgs with titanium backup for excample. Contacts can be saved via google account (settings/backup & reset) or by the export option directly from menu in contacts.

or u can also download sms backup app from playstore. it will back up all your sms and call logs as well.

Question regarding wiping.

Hi, I am going to sell my Milestone soon and need to prepare it for that.
Basically, I want to keep the current rom (CM) and the updates / scripts I flashed through Androidiani OR.
But, I obviously want to remove my data, google account, and purchased apps.
How do I achieve that? Thanks!
Just flash the non service 2.2.1 sbf of your region from and-developers.
Edit : i didnt read properly. Just wipe data in AOR.

Thanks for the instant reply, but how will that help?
I want to leave the custom rom (CyanogenMod) on the phone (including all the updates flashed via OR).
Won't your suggestion just restore it to factory default?

Yes. But your CM7 will stay. Take a nandroid and try wiping all in AOR.
To make things more clear, CM7 makes changes to your system partition. All your apps and google details are stored in the data partition. So wiping your data will not effect the system partition.
In case you were using apps2ext, make sure you format your ext partition as well.

Thanks, will try that.

Can't wipe my SGS

Hi Folks,
I am not new to this forum and i successfully flashed and tested out several custom ROMs. And yes, I know, I am still a Noob
But I have a weird problem now...
It doesn't matter which ROM I flash, my device won't get wiped. Well yes, I messed up my Nandroid backups, but:
I tried several kernels, ROMs and bootloaders. Even with the ones from samfirmware.com.
I tried it via Recovery and via the Android settings. And I've got all these old folders and files which don't get deleted when you uninstall an app. I'd really like to have a clean phone.
I know, it's a luxury problem, but it is very annoying.
So, could anyone please point me to some direction?
Thanks in Advance!
Cheers, berkley

Exact!!!
Well wipe does not wipe everything. I think to do what you are asking you need to format the internal SD card right after or maybe before a flash. That won't do the system stuff (I believe) but just the user area. The apks should recreate what they need afterwards.
But I haven't done it for a long time so don't trust me 100%. But that should do it and if you are flashing after it should clean it all up even if something useful got lost.

Use sd card maid to find legacy folders and for general clean up, amazing app

All data will be wiped if you flash with Odin with PIT-file and 'Re-partition' ticked.
Sent from hell to take your soul
could also try using the format internal SD card from the phones menu.
Does that mean that even a full reset doesn't wipe everything?
Full reset as done via punching in *2767*3855# on the dialer.
Hi Guys,
thanks for your nice words and help. I really don't know what was wrong. And I really don't know, what has fixed it!!! But now everything is working again. Thanks a ton!!!

Wipe data/cache question

i have learned so much on this site but there is one noob question i have to ask that i still dont fully understand... im wondering when rom developer recommends a "wipe" before flashing what are they refering too? I mean i understand wiping cache ive done that numerous times but i thought wiping data gets rid of everything on your phone? Is wiping data/factory reset the same thing? why would you want to delete everything on your phone in order to flash 1 rom.. maybe im missing something. I appreciate your replys!

Wiping data is the same as a data/factory reset. Usually when switching between roms, application data is not compatable and will cause force closes. You can usually skip wiping data if flashing the same type of rom, eg, between blur roms, aosp gingerbread, aosp froyo. Sometimes you'll still get force closes and will need to wipe data anyways. If you use an app like mybackup root, you can backup all your apps prior to flashing a new rom, and restore just the app. This will prevent force closes, but you'll love any app data. But at least your apps aren't lost/forgotten.

I have some issues with zeus rom

Hi,
1st, good job for your rom, seem to be very stable and fast. Just one thing, too much blue
But i have some issues with it
- Automatic time dont work, i need to set the time myself
- The number of new text message dont appear on my message icon
- I installed this theme(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465455) but my rom stopped to work properly. No way to come back with the original theme without nandroid backup?
thx
Re-install the ROM with cache wipe...theme is gone!
I dont need to wipe data and factory reset before installing rom? Or only do that when you install a new different rom?

Exactly, since you are installing same rom no need to factory reset, just wipe cache
thx for your answer!
But no idea for mail and sms issue? Cant see the number of sms, mails and missed call on the icons
I find how to get sms and missed call notification. Just need to download adwnotifier
In zeus rom
open message settings
Then notification settings
Click for display notification in status bar
It can solve

And for email if it is gmail you can
Go to settings
Accounts and synchro
Turn back ground data on
But it costs data charges
See the warning and choose accordingly

Stuck on Paranoid Android Bootscreen! (noob) HELP

Hey everyone...
ive already tried to get some quick help already but i really need my phone tonight LOL.
iam running cm9 rom with the latest cm9 stable kernal, now i wanted to flash the hydrocore kernal to see if battery would improve, but it seemed fine but then choppy afew hours later so i changed back to cm9 kernal. Anyway after it rebooted it stayed on the paranoid android bootscreen! where you see the picture loading. i then tried to wipe the cache and dalvik and its still stuck. someone mentioned to do a wipe but i was unsure if he meant to a full wipe? as ive not wiped the factory reset, just the two caches! ive also flashed both kernals back and forth and im still stuck.
Its a simple issue iam sure but could someone help me, im unsure if i should do a full wipe including factory reset or just flash the cm9 rom again. if so can i have instructions step by step...
thank you.
islandmixed, you are on a safe kernel so there is no harm in performing a wipe data/factory reset.

A full wipe worked, it rebooted. since iam weiry about restoring my apps again via mybackup pro i might just check all my apps installed from google and install them one by one and then that way i wont have to worry about anything going wrong. i do have a backup from TB and mybackup but someone said it can cause issues when restoring to a cm9 rom!
Thanks for the help. iam back again at the start HEHE.

Oh I got it now. But why would any stock apps install? If the new rom will have its own stock apps. I didn't even know TB backed up stock apps. That makes it confusing to me

You know when I wiped data would it have wiped off the gapps? I'm sure I had more rom apps with this....hmmmm
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
wipe data is totally wiping what's in your phone.. including what's inside the system/apps, build props and framework...
you may need to flash back your g.apps if you want to get all of them and selectively selecting which to install back(rather than just restoring it from TB)
TB does not restore all what you have made a backup to.

Okay then I guess the factory reset only deleted user apps then. I was told it deletes system apps which is why I thought it deleted gapps.
