well this seams stupid but
few weeks ago i asked if i should wait to gingerbread to come out or buy galaxy S for now as Nexus s is here ,logically i should go for the nexus but for some unknown reason i feel to like the galaxy more than the nexus
so practically speaking as I'm ready to go buy 1 which 1 i should go for?
thanks
Ermm practically i'd say go for the Nexus S, because it's a pure Google phone, you will get any updates straight away, once they are released instead of waiting for carriers to do their testing.
Check out the review on Engadget.
http://goo.gl/OyzJq
From what I hear they will stop making Galaxy S after Dec anyways. Also depends if you want to mess around to get stable device. The benefits is that the SGS has external mem card but crappy samsung software and rfs. While the Nexus S is a pure google dev phone which means you get everything first on it but since its almost same as SGS i expect xda to port over anything a lot easier. Myself I'd stick with the SGS as the nexus S isn't anything special. What you should be comparing is the un-announced Galaxy S 2 which I have a feeling will launch feb (due to new amoled factory going online). Then again the LG Star would have landed by then which has tegra 2 (dual core).
Is this a serious question?
It can't be.
really, either not serious or the OP doesn't know what design faults the SGS has. Rom can fix a lot of it but nothing can fix the internal SD design. There's a reason why the Nexus S has a redesigned internal SD.
Personally I'd stay far away from both but if you must then the Nexus is the only choice.

At best that's an assumption, at worst, it's totally made up.
What's wrong with the internal SD design? If the Nexus S has a redesigned internal SD, it's more likely to be due to advances in technology which improve the performance and experience of the chips (maybe make them smaller too). Or do you think that the 400mhz processors were replaced simply because they were buggy? Furthermore, if there were serious flaws, Samsung could issue new revisions of the chips.
I severely doubt you have any proof to back up this claim with, other than a guess.
well to make it more clear i'll tell you my worries about the nexus s
1-I don't like the pure android UI that the nexus s will have seems to like the touch wiz UI galaxy s have (strange huh?)
2-even both devices have 5 mp camera and the nexus s have flash (which galaxy s doesn't have) but from what i read the video recording quality in the nexus is lower and it does not have HD recording and they say it quite suck
for all other aspects they are almost identical and i think none of them is top over the other
P.S people keep saying that this phone will be completely outdated in like 3 months or so when dual core processors come out so is it better to wait again or just give it a shoot and buy one of these?
thanks
no swype on Nexus S
so u be waiting for dual core and waiting for tripe and quadcore, so my guess is u will never buy a phone, first the galaxy s isnt that bad since there are more then 7million sold worldwide and samsung is now the nr1 android phone and in the usa alone with around 30%. second if use the lagfix the phone runs like a monster, even without it runs good.third we have the best gpu and same cpu as iphone 4 so shouldnt be so bad after all, all games running smooth.he should just buy a nexus if he wants more space then 16gb and wants to use a memcard then goto buy a galaxy s, both phones use the same chipset except the nand memory from nexus.
I know this post will enrage some people here, but it needs to be said.
Every Nexus phone since the N1 has been a FAILURE, pure and simple. The N1 set the standard at the time with class leading specs, and despite not being perfect, it still made the Android OEMs sit up and take notice, ushering in a new wave of amazing Android devices.
Since that time, from Google, we've had:
Nexus S - warmed over Galaxy S, with no killer features that was lacklustre at the time of release and quickly destroyed by the GS2
Galaxy Nexus - a phone that released with an old chipset which would not have been a problem in and of itself, if the camera and battery life hadn't been so utterly ****
And now, the Nexus 4.
This phone is so close to getting it right - decent processor, decent amount of RAM, good screen, camera is supposed to be good if the LG Optimus G is anything to go by. And yet Google eff it all up with 16GB max storage.
I've been wanting a Nexus ever since the N1, but each time Google puts a hurdle in the way of my buying it. The fact the N4 is such a stupendous price only makes this latest failure all the more annoying for me. Everyone knows the arguments for and against cloud storage, so I won't bore you by repeating them. But I feel like if I get a Nexus then I'm slowly but surely being herded into using the phone someone else's way rather than my own. Does that ring any bells for you?
The N4 looks SO good in every other aspect that I'm desperately trying to see if I can rearrange my affairs on the phone to try and make 16GB work. Get rid of the backups and ROMs hanging around. Trim down my apps, especially the large games. Jettison most of my music. Re-encode my TV and movies to a much smaller size/worse quality. I MAY be able to do it, but it's going to be a lot of extra hassle and constant moving things around. This device is supposed to make my life easier, not give me more work to do. I'm very disappointed.
Finally, I hope Google come out and say one way or another NOW whether or not they intend on releasing larger storage versions later. If I were to buy this 16GB phone and then they put out a 32/64GB in three months that would enrage me. If Google were to let us know that they intend on releasing something bigger later then I would happily wait for that. But I think they'll keep us in the dark, even if they are thinking about doing it - they know that if they were to release something else later then it would be going up against the GS4 and HTC J Butterfly, which is a fight the N4 wouldn't win in a lot of people's eyes.
That's my rant over for now - feel free to agree/disagree/savage me below!!
Pls Remember...
Remember N4 is a PHONE...
Try not to migrate your whole life to your phone... Unless it is completely mandatory...
16 GB is actually decent, and should not be considered as a fail just because it doesn't fit your needs
Cheers!
I'm not even going to bother with this. Anyone else or should we just delete the thread?
I don't expect they will come out NOW and say that there is a 32GB version around the corner, it'll just put people off buying one one release. If it's frustrated you that much and you need the space then I'd just wait a few months. At worst they don't release one and you will probably be able to pick a 16GB up for slightly less than the release price.
Are we seriously allowing more such threads to find its way on this forum?
Why the hell do you have so much crap on your phone? That's ridiculous.
Google doesn't "fail."
You "fail."
This thread "fails."

There are so many people saying the same thing that I'm hopeful it will get brought to Google's attention that loads of people WANT to buy this device but NEED more storage space.
Sorry, but if they had announced a 32GB option then this device would be being hailed by almost everyone as the best thing to happen to Android ever (what with the specs and aggressive pricing). Instead, it just has a large portion of its target market banging their heads against a wall...

I'm going to have to agree with the OP. The same people that are praising this phone have been knocking Apple for such lacking features in the past including no expandable storage, no removable battery, no LTE. Amazing how cool it is that this device doesn't have these features...
I'm not going to go into the reasons why I would like more space as it's been covered over and over in other threads.
The point of this thread is to ask why Google seems unable to spec a phone that is ahead of the curve and also meets the needs of most of its target market, without jumping through hoops like USB-OTG for this, or buying an extended battery and putting up with a rubbish camera on the G-Nex.

edit: Sigh, I'll be nice.
(short story is that "most" of the target does not need over 16GB of space, not even close. Speak for yourself.)

So you call the latest S4 Snapdragon Quadcore processor decent? Two gb's of ram is only decent? Please show me any phone which can muster those kind of specs, especially in that price range.
Also, the storage space of 16 gb's in my opionion should be enough for the average user. How large part of the main public do you really think store roms and nands on their devices?

+1....:good:
Simple economics suggests that to make a device with such powerful specifications and make it available for under $300, you need to cut your costs somewhere. I would rather have 8 or 16GB of storage space than have a subpar screen, processor, or inadequate RAM. There is a specific reason why Google no longer wants a microSD card, and they have publicly stated why since 2010. Come to terms and accept it as a viable compromise, or just don't purchase the Nexus 4. The android ecosystem is large enough to make everyone happy.

16GB won't work for you on the Nexus 4, but you seem to really like the Nexus One which had 512 MB, a good bit of which was taken by the OS.
Edit: Wikipedia says 190 MB for applications
Hi guys,
I'm considering buying a new phone. I am interested in Note 2. But it is out of budget. Do you guys think, Note 1 is viable option? I want a phone that works. I am absolutely pissed at my current phone. It lags.
I want to know if it is a good option to buy Note 1 in 2013? Does games run smoothly? And last, how is the developer support?
Thanks for taking time to read it. Looking forward for replies.

Firstly, this is a question so it should go in the Q&A section. But whatever.
Secondly, regarding your question.
You're complaining about how your phone is laggy and after following this thread for a while, I wouldn't recommend getting the Note for a "lag-free" phone.
Here's why:
Darren Moffatt said:
Screen Resolution will always have an impact on performance. The more pixels to display, the harder the GPU has to work. Given the note has a significantly higher resolution than the Galaxy S2 while running the same GPU (and pretty much the same hardware overall), its unlikely you'll see the same graphics performance between the two devices.

They got the same chipset, and that's exactly the problem, that's why the note is always laggy unlike the incredible smoothness on S2 , you r comparing:
- 480 x 800 pixels, 4.3 inches (~217 ppi pixel density) ~> S2
TO
- 800 x 1280 pixels, 5.3 inches (~285 ppi pixel density) ~> Note 1
How could the same chipset handle bigger screen, higher resolution and more ppi ?
And even with CM kernel, it even laggs more and more
The solution? ~> buy Note 2 xD

If you're looking for a phone that doesn't lag, I would recommend the Nexus 4.
If you're looking for a phone with a big screen, Samsung recently announced the Galaxy Mega series, although they have mid-range specs.
If you're wanting a high-end phone, but aren't willing to pay the high-price tag... well... you get what you pay for.
I was keen on getting Nexus 4 but it's not available in India. Btw, my current phone is Motorola Defy. It's terrible to say the least. All I want to know if it will function lag free in day to day performance and some gaming?

i dont really understand the " buy note 2 " thing. because it has the same gpu as the note 1.
note 1 is still a worthy device to have because at present it can run every app that is in the play store.

I'm glad you said "For me".
Dual Core is a great asset in a phone, just like in PCs when they first hit, but Quad Core hasn't really had the same impact, and won't for some time (IMHO). Phones are still not multitaskers from a user point of view; we can only have one app on screen at any one time (other than some phones that allow two, including the Note 1). So you could argue that the app that has the focus takes one core, and background tasks take the other (although it is a little more complicated than that). Most apps are not multithreaded either, so there are few benefits to more than 2 cores. Web browsers, for example, are mostly single threaded.
The newer phones tend to be quicker / slicker in real world use more because of the refinements in the CPU core, better GPU and (to a lesser extent) faster speeds. Whether you see improvements from 2GB of RAM over 1GB is purely subjective and depends on individual use patterns. Increased CPU speed only helps for, to be generous, about 20% of time when the phone is in use. Less than 5% overall.
And the arguements that the Note 1 is slower than the S2 were also true when the Note 1 was brand new, which didn't stop it selling extrememly well! That arugement is flawed.
The bottom line, for the OP, is "How much?". Comparisons shouldn't be made between the Note 1 and the Note 2, nor with any newer phone with a Quad Core CPU and 2GB of RAM, they are in different price brackets. Comparisons should be made to phones in the same price bracket, the age of a device is irrelevant (for now). Depending on how cheaply the Note 1 can be bought for, that might make it a very good prospect.
I personally find the 'lower' resolution of the Note 1 to be fine, and I really appreciate that it is 16x10 rather than 16x9 in aspect ratio.
However, it is an older phone and I doubt Samsung will release any more updates for it after the recent 4.1.2. Developer support is very strong, though, and custom ROMs are getting better and better as the Exynos chipset is exploited more and more in the open source drivers. The Note 1 running SuperNexus or SlimBean is really quite slick. And if you want some of the stock Samsung Apps then Cassies ROM is great for getting rid of the bloat.
Out here in Qatar, the Note 1 is still for sale, but is more expensive than the Nexus 4 is in the UK (excluding flight costs!). The Nexus 4 is a stunning phone. So it all comes down to cost and availability of other phones.

I agree with you up to a certain extent. However I wish to raise the following points-
Dual cores are not as efficient as quad cores.
As you say, RAM is subjective but 2 GB will give better results than 1 GB.
I don't like the 16:10 aspect ratio
Exynos chipset won't be exploited any more - developers are steadily leaving the Exynos chipsets behind and moving on to Qualcomm chipsets.
Yes, there will be just one more update to 4.2.2 and then Samsung will drop support.
Out here in India, Nexus 4 isn't even available officially.
@op I wouldn't buy this phone if I were you. Get something from the newer generation or get the note2 secondhand when the note 3 comes out - doubtless there will be more than one idiot willing to throw away a perfectly good phone for the latest and greatest.
However if you want a phone that 'just works' and developer support is important then go for a Sony.
What am I getting ? The next nexus. But that's because I'm a flashaholic !
BUY ONE! I skipped the note 2 as we have no 4g. Quad cores only give 60%more processing power not double. I over clocked mine to1.6gig.
I'm vv happy with it still. You should skip a generation as the tec is good for two years. Phone makers want you to up date every year.

I'm not sure that's the case. The Exynos 4 is still in current hardware, such as the S3, Note 2 and Note 8. The Exynos 5 is in the Nexus 10 and is expected to show up in the S4 at some point. All of these devices have a huge amount of aftermarket dev support.

Again, we need to compare on price, not hardware specs. I don't know how much the Note sells for in India, but compare that with what's available in the same price bracket. The Note cannot now compete with the latest and greatest, nor the previous top models perhaps, but I'm sure it would fair very well indeed against the current mid-range crop.
As for the Dual / Quad core arguement, check what Anand says when he reviews the Note 8 and talks about Multiview:
Here’s where having four cores actually can make a difference.

Meaning that in general 4 cores are not really any more useful than 2 unless you have something that specifically can benefit.

While your net decision is agreeable, the logic you provided for it is full of misnomers. The 'more cores and more RAM' theory doesn't work that way. Buying a phone with that logic is just plain ignorance. A dual core phone can still do wonders if the materials are right. An old horse Note1 with 2 exynos cores can do a lot more than a new phone with 4 MedaTek cores. And RAM is pretty much useless without proper optimizations on both s/w and h/w fronts.
To the OP - It is an old phone, reaching two years in Oct. And it was first designed to run Gingerbread so we have come a long way already in terms of support. So you are gonna drop 26-27K on a phone that is great but would not be officially supported for very long. Plus it should see significant drop in prices when the Note 3 comes out (the trade value of the phone will be peanuts compared to what you would pay for it now).
However, on the plus side you would get an excellent phone. With proper care and the help pf XDA resources you would not need official support. We should easily see Key Lime Pie (Android 5.0) on our notes not long after it comes out. Plus it is an awesome device, did I say?? And for ~26K, the alternatives are mid-range phones that just can't match up.
If I were you, I would buy a pre-owned Note 1 (or a Xolo A800 which I must admit is quite nice and cheap). Then when it comes out, get a brand new Note 3.

Hi Guys
Been using my D3 with minimoto for close to an year now and like most people I love it, specially the keyboard. However I would really like to move to Jelly Bean now and experience the goodies that come with it. Something that seems difficult if not impossible with the D3. Before you comment yes I have tried the various JB custom roms here and found them slow and unstable, not to mention the camera thing. Not saying this is in any way the fault of Devs here who should be paid by motorola to make this device usable especially HashCode. Its entirely Motorola's fault for bundling only 512 MB RAM with a nice device like this.
Anyway now I am set on a upgrade in a few months. The question I have is how much RAM should a phone have? or does it even matter?
Given that D3 was left behind for ICS upgrades and the multitude of phones coming out with 2 Gig RAM I am wondering whether I should go with a 1 Gig phone and risk getting left behind again or have I fallen pray to the latest and greatest race?
Could not find any good info on google and so your inputs would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks
Atin
I'd say 2 GB minimum. That seems to be the standard for mid-range to high-end phones right now. I upgraded to the Droid Maxx last week and my phone uses 1.1 GB RAM, with 656 MB free, basically running the same apps I ran on the Droid 3, with the additional stuff on the Maxx (touchless control, etc.)
Probably 2-4GB is good enough. Most new phones should be fine. The Nexus 4 is a cheap deal now so that would be a cheap upgrade if you wanted to.
Thanks for your inputs. Will go for a 2 Gig phone then. Should be good enough for me
Hi there after watching the unpacking event, and reading the full specs I dont really see much of an upgrade.
Yes they have added some good additions like the fingerprint scanner which is awesome, but alot of the other additions wont be used on a massive scale by all users.
Hardware wise, wasnt too inpressed on these either really, would of liked to see an octa-core version, plus the battery isnt too much of an upgrade.
But Ive found a clone version which in my eyes is better, comes with octa-core, looks exactly the same

Again this is only my opinion, and of course others will feel different which is there right to do so.
I may even change my mind once ive got my hands on one and have a play, but as for right now, im quite disappointed with the S5.
And I am a Galaxy User myself currently having the Galaxy S3 and soon will have the Note 3 also.
Thanks for reading.
I'm sure this cheap knockoff will be worth every penny.
I wouldnt give you $100 for that phone ROFL. No 4G data (3G only), knockoff CPU, bigger battery 2800mah then the S4 2600mah with less talk time then the S4.
would be great but no lte? i'd like to try before I bought one haha.
It's so hard to find a flagship phone that looks good, has a replaceable battery and microsd slot.

Hmmm... No LTE is a deal breaker. 3G is barely good enough to stream YouTube vids, and sometimes it won't even stream at all on 3G.

No, it's not at all. The Note 3 is AMAZING! You should check it out.
The Note 3 in a 5 inch form factor would be perfect (spec, looks and feel). Why couldn't they make a Note 3 Mini?
I already own the Note 2 and it's a big too big now and it weight a lot. I currently have the HTC one and while the metal body is great, it feels like you're holding a brick.
Yes I do understand that it doesnt have all the features of the original and of course the price represents that. But I just wasnt really impressed with the S5 so far. As I said my opinion may change once ive had an hands on experience with the device. Its thoughts at the moment.

Don't you think users will use the improved camera (a major update - not just in megapixels) and the water proofing? The improved screen with higher and lower brightness? Yes the puls-rate monitor is a bit gimmicky but unlike ALL the "air" features of S4 these functions will improve every users daily use with the phone.
Kudos for Samsung for not focusing on the one-time-wow-factor and instead improving the users daily rutine.
Yes of course i did like that they did add what users wanted. And of course everyone is going to have there own opinion of the device,

And an unlockable bootloader on a carrier that actually has service where I need it.

Well, cell phones have reached that plateau where you can't really add anything anymore. Add too much, people cry about bloat and gimmick. Add too little, and you get this... The heck are you guys doing that you need an octocore?

Speaking of everyday average users..90% won't even notice the camera is improved over the s4, so that argument doesn't work IMO.
I won't even comment on the "higher and lower brightness" because that is just lolol. Sounds like iPhone users trying to sell things android has had for years.
I'm sorry, but people are grasping when defending this phone. What I can't figure is how websites like android central praise samsung for making Touchwiz closer to vanilla android and less gaudy....but How?? They put a freaking camera shortcut on the lock screen and gave us a white battery icon, otherwise the rom grew by about a GB over the s4 and is more bloated than ever. They are following the apple footprint by locking the phone down and offering extremely minor upgrades, but I don't blame them because they still make millions by working less because people still buy this stuff like it's the best thing ever.
Note 3. That's innovation. This phone does everything. Maybe the Note 4 will arrive with features worthy of an upgrade. The normal people can have the s5 because commercials told them it was cool.

Plus not to mention that the galaxy s5 rom will take 8gb of internal space. Bloatware much. So in essence buy the 16gb version to save money. Only have 8 gb of free storage space.

Are you really suggesting that users won't notice they take less crappy photos? That their phone is better in direct sunlight?
How exactly is Note 3 innovation? What new features did it bring that it's predecessor did not have besides the usual performance bump?
what intrigues me is the fact the s5 uses wifi and data at the same time when using the web be great to see how that works and if it really makes a difference should imagine its pretty fast?

Actually you get 10,6 GB of free storage. The "2 GB" was MWC stuff on it.
Oh and I think the 128GB microSD card support does kind of help, no?
Wait for Galaxy note 4. I am sure sammy will give us good surprises

ahh yes that is true
but a friend of mine told me
"if you keep waiting for something better, you will end up waiting forever"
at the end of the day people will keep praising samsung and choose to buy it after finding out that the new HTC One will have only 2600mah battery and non removable and oppo find 7's 2k screen is washed out and you can't tell difference with 1080p screen anyway. not to mention lg g3 will have a very powerful processor like the snapdragon 805 but still laggy. i predict in the end samsung still wins although i hope i'm wrong. cheers
