Had this the other day...rendered my phone inoperable.
Basically the lock widget disappeared which was weird. Locked it and went to unlock and nothing happens.
I could press the lock button as much as I want - all I get it a black screen.
If I press camera it will open the camera in locked mode. Could take pictures but nothing else! Pressing lock again did nothing
Its almost the equivalent of explorer.exe crashing I suppose.
Fixed it in the end (luckily) by finding that holding the lock/power button and volume down for 10 seconds reset the phone to recovery mode.
Weird thing was I could receive calls still! Android crash perhaps? Hope jelly bean comes soon

Ive discovered this by accident but while the phone is in standby modus and and the screen is locked, when you press the powerbutton for ~5sec the phone reboots.
In my opinion the "reboot" function mapped to the power button should only be working when the phone is screen unlocked.
Is this a samsung or android thingy?
what do you mean by stand by mode ? when screen is off and not being used ? this doesnt happen on my device...
just dont press the power button for 5 seconds and hey presto !!! job done lol
isn' tthis good feature?
It may help a little when
a. not able to 'wake-up' a sleeping phone
b. upon waking-up , force close message keeps on appearing
In b, i have to take out battery and when using my case-mate barely there cover, it's inconvenient to pry it open.
oops.. I didn't answer your actual question.
Sorry, dunno if this is Samsung thingie or Android thingie. But I can "reproduce" the effect on my phone.
It's not reboot though - it goes to "switch off" mode

mine comes up with a message to shut down the phone or enter flight mode or silent mode or data network mode if you hold down the power button for 5 secs in stand by mode.
If your not getting that message first its possible that your firmware is faulty or if its not a stock firmware it may have not been added correctly.
same here i get message.. stock jpy with speedmod kernel
No i meant like for example you put the phone in your pocket like you normally do and the powerbutton gets pressed for ~5sec while your bent down or another position the button gets pressed it would reboot. Im not really happy with that happening would you.
Im on stock js3 onlything i mod was putting the voodoo kernel on it.
Its a good thing
You'll be happy when the phone freezes and you don't need to take it apart to reboot it (pull battery)... Its just like a power button on a PC, if you hold it long enough it shuts the device down. I've never done it by accident though. Just get a $.99 plastic case and your problem will be gone but you'll still have the feature.

Hi, I received an unlock code and I followed the directions.
I put in my T-Mobile sim card and started my Atrix HD. When it finished loading, it went to this grey background screen that asked for the unlock code with either option of "Enter"ing or "Dismiss"ing. I inputted my code, and pressed Enter to unlock it. After that, the two options disappeared as well as the bar for entering the code, but stayed on that same grey background screen with nothing but that and the time, signal strength, battery life, etc. on the top of every android. About 5 seconds later, my phone picked up T-mobile and was finally unlocked (I was getting texts, etc), but it was still on the grey background screen. I've been waiting for over 2 hours now, and it is still stuck on the grey screen. I have tried pressing the home button, the back button, and the tabs button, but none of them does anything and stays on the grey screen. I am able to turn the screen off and on and adjust the sound with the physical buttons, and everything works at the locked screen. When I try unlocking the screen, opening the camera, opening the phone or text, it all goes back to the grey screen. Also when I try turning off the phone with the physical button, no option of powering off appears on screen, it just stays on the grey screen.
Help! How do I get rid of this grey screen. I have not tried restarting because I do not know how to restart the phone without being given the option by pressing the power button. I've held the power button, but that did nothing.

Nevermind! I found the answer to own question. Since the lock screen still works, I just went to the lock screen and without unlocking the screen, I pressed the power button and the power off options appeared on the lock screen. So I was able to restart my phone that way. The grey screen is gone after I restarted. Hope this helps.

Just press the power button once (without holding it) like you're locking the phone. The screen will turn black, now press it again, you'll see the lockscreen now press and hold the power button till you see the power off option coming up.

Hey, I received a notification on my watch, so as I go to look at it (the screen is always on mode) the watch is frozen in ambient mode. When I hard reset it, the screen just goes black but I still receive vibrations upon various actions. Any ideas? I really hope the screen isn't dead. There have been no other signs of damage...
The watch is connected to my phone.
Can you enter in recovery? Try a factory reset.

Well I mean I can't see anything on the screen so I'm unsure how to go about doing that
The device also does not appear to have a reset button at the back
Press the button of the watch loooooooooong, until it starts and stops vibrating continuously (first you will feel a short vibration then a very long one.... you need to keep pressing the button while it vibrates for the long interval as well).
After the long vibration the device will restart ... IF you see the LG logo, swipe from top-left to bottom-right of the screen ...

Thanks for the suggestion, but the screen remains black. Note I also do not feel a short vibration beforehand.
Sorry .. the short vibration will be felt only if the watch is awaken. From the dim mode it goes directly to the long one.
It seems that your watch has a problem. you can try to access it through ADB (if you enabled it) or you can just leave it until it will become completely depleted and try to revive it again afer that.
see this post: here
activate warranty is the current solution
I have the same problem, with no warranty so the watch is just sitting there for now
Hello and thank you for attempting to help me. I have a Nexus 6 from T-mobile. My dentist appointment yesterday brought me clean teeth and a terrible phone problem. While I was there yesterday my phone decided to download the 5.1.1 update OTA. I pressed the okay button and it restarted. On boot up, I get a white window saying it is "optimizing apps x out of 138". It does that every time I boot it up. After that window is finished, I get a black backgrounded lock screen. On the lock screen in the usual place is the time. In the top left it says there is no sim card. In the bottom I get the normal call, unlock, camera buttons. I am able to drag down the top to show the notification information. As far as I know there are no settings changed from the factory Nexus 6 I recieved from T-mobile. Now I have attempted multiple tasks to try to access my phone but all have been in vain. Here is a list of what I have tried.
To unlock the phone normally. The result is a black screen, a little beep, a white window that says Google services have failed. After a second or two the white screen goes away and leaves a empty screen. I am still able to hold the power button to reveal the white power off window and it works. I can also hold down on the volume and the power button to create a screen shot. It even shows the whole minimization of the current screen and fall to the bottom like it would if the phone was working properly.
I tried to swipe the call button and all it does is give me a blank white screen with a blue notification bar at the top. I can once again power off or screen shot but nothing else.
I have not tried to swipe from camera yet.
I can drag down on the top notification bar to show the the notifications, quick setting changes (Wifi, data, airplane modes, brightness) and the setting button to go to the setting menu. I can turn the brightness up and down, and turn all the other things in the quick menu on and off but if I click anything (toogle them or slide the brightness) and put the notifications bar back up I get the black screen with the white google services has crashed window. I can power off and screen shot normally.
If i swipe down on the notification bar and press setting It crashes once again and gives the black screen and white window that says google services has crashed. I can power off and screen shot normally.
I tried holding volume down and the power button then went into recovery mode. Held power then press volume up to get to the next menu and then deleted the cache partition. It has no effect that I have noticed.
As stated above, I do not think I have usb debugging enabled, I assume my boot loader is locked. This phone has not been modded by me.
I do not want to factory reset if I do not have to due to the very important phones and numbers i have.
You didn't make a backup before updating ?

Unless there is a previous setting in place that I clicked to automatically update it when ever there is one available, I do not remember picking to update. It downloaded and asked me to reset. I assumed it was a small patch and not something that could screw up my phone. I could of though. But no I did not.

Well, I'd suggest a factory reset even though you are reluctant. Otherwise, bring it somewhere for repair. But chances are they're going to tell you to factory reset.
I've got an AT&T HTC One M7. It's non-rooted and has stock firmware. Android updates from AT&T are installed when pushed. It's all pretty routine. As of yesterday evening, this phone started rebooting and won't stop.
If I leave it alone, it vibrates (normal startup notification), goes to the green on white "htc" screen for a few seconds, then goes blank and starts over. I can get to the bootloader screen, and I've gotten it to start in safe mode as well, but it always restarts again within a few seconds.
Things I've done/found:
- Holding down the volume down button while it restarts takes me to the bootloader menu, but the buttons don't seem to work correctly when I get there, and it always restarts again within a few seconds.
- I managed to start it in safe mode a few times--I think by holding volume up and volume down at the same time--but it restarted before I could do anything.
- I removed the SIM card. Same thing.
- I let it reboot until it died. As soon as I plugged it in, it started the same thing again.
I'm starting to think it's hardware failure, like the power button is constantly making contact, even though the button feels fine to the touch. Note that I get to the bootloader just by holding the volume down button. I don't have to touch the power button. I'm not certain whether that's normal. Can anyone give me any ideas or even just verify that it seems like a hardware problem?
