Hard Buttons Cause Crazy Short - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone else have this issue?
I dug up my old G1 to do a little testing, and it boots fine into good old CM5. Problem is, the hard buttons, keyboard included, when pressed, cause the backlighting on all the buttons to flicker. Every button except for End (Power) locks the phone.
What would be the first step toward fixing this, and is it even repairable?
So far, I have added Button Savior as a workaround, but I would really like to fix the short, if that's what it is, so that I can flash a new ROM.
Any ideas? Do I need to disassemble the casing? Everything works in recovery- still buggy, but workable. In Android the buttons are not even usable.
Sent from my LG-P925 using xda app-developers app

I think its the hardware, but try to flash this.
If the buttons doesnt work after all and you still wish to reanimate your G1, lock out for a square part or even better a used one,
to replace the button fields.

Help buttons not working on my At&t tilt

Alright my At&t tilt front face buttons started to not work (i could only use the arrow buttons and the ok button) and my keyboard stopped working but the arrow keys would. i upgraded the rom after calling htc for help. that didnt fix a thing and now today none of the buttons work. i keep getting the PTT to come up and ask for installation and edfc keeps typing themselves on the screen. so idk if it is a software problem or if the hard ware is malfunctioning.
Damn, I got the same problem. Does anybody know how to fix this?
the same problem here... :/
same problema here.
i already tried another radio, another SPL, another ROM and nothing.
any idea?
Just updating.
Yesterday my tytn started working perfectly again, but today the same problem is occuring. I did nothing, so probably is really a hardware issue.
I have a similar problem.
Send/End + Soft Keys + Keyboard are not working. The issue is not resolved yet?
Wow, this problem just happened to me as well. I've searched everywhere on the net and couldn't find anything.
So is this a pervasive issue? Anyone with any hint as to what might be the source of the problem?
Originally, I thought it the PTT button was stuck in the PRESSED position because the phone behaves as if this button was constantly being pressed. For example my PTT button was mapped to Voice Recorder if the PTT button was held down. The voice recorder constantly comes on everytime I turn the phone on!!

I have the exact same problem.
The only change I recently made (two weeks ago) was installing tom tom navigator.
First I thought it was a virus and I installed bull guard, but with no success.
It opens/closes the start menu every second, no buttons work apart from the directional buttons and it writes "edfc" in my textmessages when I turn on/off the screen with the power button.
Most of the time(!) this irritating opening/closing of the start menu only happens after I first turn off/on the screen (with the power button).
I saw this problem described in a post dating back almost two years ago. Someone ought to know the answer to our problems. What does HTC say about it?
I have been lucky and not had this issue yet; but I would recommend starting by flashing the stock rom from HTC. Then hard reset; that will clear everything back to original. If you still experence this after that, then you have a hardware issue. Good luck
This just happened to me this morning. I cant use any buttons and nothing is popping up. This is soo wierd cause the phone was just sitting there overnight!!
Me too...
I have been going nuts with this issue for a couple months now. Makes the phone unusable half the time. I am so disappointed to find that a ROM reload doesn't fix it!! I remapped the 6 key to none and that sort of helps but it was mapped to Voice record before and it would constantly record memos until all the memory was gone in the phone and then it would all crash from there. So frustrating.
I too get the edfc message after I reboot....
It really seems like a virus the way it acts but I guess if it is a hardware issue then it's not a virus.
Anyone ever figure anything out with this? Nothing has changed on my phone recently.
Still an issue?
Holy Toledo fellow Tilt Users. Have you ditched your half-functioning touchscreen, or have we figured out how to solve this issue.
Recently I FOUND THE SAME PROBLEM!
I am going to do what was suggested (original HTC Rom & hard reset) and will let you know if I get the rest of my keyboard back...
All buttons except for power and... NOT WORKING
Outside "Enter" buttons work but they are mapped to Windows key. ? Weird. For some reason the kaiser thinks it is something else. I do not know how it got this way, but there must be a way to convince the hardware of the existence of all my other buttons. The entire keyboard does not work.
Hard Reset & stock HTC Rom did not help. I was surprised that I could hard reset it at all since the two soft buttons are unresponsive to software.
Anyone figure this out yet?
Hi, I got the same issue today as well - Has anyone got rid of this?

Kasier buttons not working - FIX

The other day all the hardware buttons on my ATT Tilt stopped working - just power and camera would work. The rest would do nothing except sometimes the dpad would open the start menu. I couldn't even answer the phone as the green button wouldn't work. The keyboard would not work either which made email a pain. I did not drop it in water, it just stopped working.
Tonight I loaded the trial of AE Button Plus - google or search XDA for their site. I reprogrammed all the outside buttons on my tilt back to their original use (not hard at all) and even upgraded a few buttons. Now all my buttons work great and the keyboard even stared working again!!!!!
I am not affiliated with them at all, but I saw some others of you with my problem. This is a much cheaper solution than getting another phone. To buy the program it is about $7, but there is a 14 day trial so you can see if it works for you. I was about to replace/upgrade - but now I can keep usingg this awesome machine!
(I do notice some minor lag sometimes with the buttons - but just being able to use them again is well worth it for me!)
Will
hard reset?
if the issue was fixable after installing some software (ae button plus), then i guess a hard reset would have worked also...or better yet, flash another ROM while you're at it, preferably one that is cooked to a medium golden-brown texture by the finest chefs this side of cyberspace...
<Drooling-Like-Homer>MMMMMMMMM ROMMMMMGHGHGHGH !!!</Drooling-Like-Homer>
Maybe I was didn't say it well enough...
It is funny that a software fix would work, my guess is a hardware problem with the phone, but the software is a workaround for it. They keypresses were there, the phone just didn't know how to handle them. If it was a driver issue - one of the roms should have fixed it.
Maybe I was not clear in the first post, but the buttons did not work. When you pushed the power button, keys 'wszx' would type in the phone - evidenced by it searching for a contact that matched every time it powered up - power button or slideing the keyboard out. The only button that worked normal was the camera button. They keyboard was completely unusable - no response on the machine. Soft buttons = nada.
First I tried a hard reset then I flashed at least 8 roms and about 6 radios. Nothing worked. Even started a post on a touchscreen only rom and basically found what would work without buttons.
In my search for the fix in the last two weeks, I basically came to the conclusion a new phone was in order. Now I have a bit more time

Weird Kaiser Hardware Button Failure

Hi all, please can you help me with this!?
Firstly when my phone boots or is taken out of sleep mode it immediately activates voice record as if this button has been pressed. It then opens the dialler and types ‘EDFC’. If I open pocket word and then wake the phone up it also types ‘EDFC’ before doing the above.
My keyboard is not working and the only hardware buttons that function are the power button (only for a while), the camera button and the silver select button in the middle of the d-pad. The jog wheel and silver directional d-pad buttons occasionally come to life. The others don’t work (green call and red end buttons, ok, windows etc).
When I use the standard keyboard SIP on the screen the directional buttons and delete do not function?!
I’ve reverted to a stock ROM to make sure this isn’t the problem.
It appears as though my Kaiser thinks these buttons are being depressed, but I’ve checked them and they click normally and release when pressed (even though they don’t perform a function) so nothing is stuck down etc….
I’m going to use AE Buttons to try and unhinge the button functions for now, but it would be great if someone has any suggestions!!
Thanks in advance.
Update - AE Button won't unhinge the buttons or change their function to anything else (e.g. nothing). I can't stop this from happening every time the phone boots/wakes up!
Help!
Mine got the same symptoms last week except it opens quick something or other, and then the dialler dials 2547.The screen for my pin then comes up,which I can enter normally.Home screen fires up normally but the keyboard will not work or any buttons except the silver one in the middle.Searched a bit and this problem is very common although I cannot find a solution anywhere. Can someone please help
AE button didn't work?
When mine did that, I reset all the hardware buttons (not the keyboard, just the buttons reachable from the outside. A soft reset and viola!
That's the only solution I have. It's worked for me 2x.
Also try pulling the battery for 20 seconds or so and restarting. That has fixed my touchscreen not working after it gets spashed 3x. Yeah, my phone is old and abused, but keeps working.

Thanks for your replies - I've got Orange sending me another one in the morning now and sods law it's just stopped happening.... Taking the replacement anyway in case it happens again.
For my knowledge, how did you reset the buttons? I deleted some registry keys to completely stop them working (although I couldn't find the registry keys for the red and green buttons).
Searching on Google there are quite a few reports of this, but no one has ever posted the cause!
I am having the same problem... please help. My phone is going crazy. I did a hard reset but still didnt solve the problem....
I am also having this issue. Phone starts typing EDFC and then initiates the voice recorder. I reflashed various ROMs and regardless of what was flashed.. initially they appeared okay, then it started happening again. I also tried hard and soft resets. Nothng has worked so far.
I resorted to disabling the keys and some of the applications which I dont use which appear to be getting started/run (Voice recorder for one). So far I havent had the issue, knock on wood.
I think this is more than likely a hardware error. My tilt is actually pretty old so I wouldnt be surprised. If someone finds either the cause or a workable solution please post. Im trying to hold off until January when my contact expires to get a new HTC.
I searched and searched but found no solution for this and ended up getting the phone replaced.
HTC seemed to know nothing of such a problem....
Have you tried whacking it?!!?
Hope you get it sorted.

Hmm, yes, but I don't see how that helped my phone.
lol, all jokes aside, my friends, I ask in this thread as well,
what is causing this problem? I ran into this issue after ALL my buttons stopped working (except for the power).
I installed a new rom (I forget which one), and still nothing works except for power button.
It would be even better if someone knows the solution!
-Calling for Help-I'm still convinced it is a software/registry problem...
Okay, so there's no solution available for this weird problem of ours.
On the bright side, however, it is amazing that we can still use the phone, even after it requires servicing (some way or another). I have accepted this handicap that has been placed on my phone for now, simply hoping it will grow out of it one day.
But something isn't right. When I looked in the registry (trying to follow some directions I found within the wiki for when your keyboard STILL doesn't work properly), there was a discrepancy between what was supposed to be found in the registry and what was actually there. It wasn't that the values were wrong, it was the names of the values that were different. Why could this be?
Or even if you have moment of time, and you have an AT&T Tilt, and it works perfectly, maybe you could write up a run down of what you have hanging around in that section of the registry?
Hey, just so I can be sure, is there some place I can cross check what I have in my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP with what is supposed to be there in a fully functioning AT&T Tilt?

How to Get Back to Stock from CM7 with no Download Mode

Okay so I have searched the world wide web over and I cannot find a solution to this problem. I rooted and flashed cm7 to my Captivate. I did not make any backup before doing this as I just jumped right in without proper research beforehand. Everything went smooth until my power button randomly stopped working. I disassembled and cleaned the power button multiple times with CRC Electronic Cleaner to no avail and it did nothing. Then I attempted using Odin One Click only to realize I somehow no longer have access to download mode no matter what I do. Now my power down menu (menu that appears when power button is held) pops up randomly without the button being touched. All that to say I would like to get my phone back to stock out of the box condition and see if that would solve all my problems but I can't figure out a way to do that without download mode.....??? Please help :crying:
Make or buy a jig, that'll fix your download mode issue then just flash with odin.
Also your power button issue won't be fixed by going back to stock. The only true fix is to get a replacement button. However it's not very easy because it's soldered onto the board.

I remember seeing a thread on here about mapping the power button to a volume button if I'm not mistaken, it doesn't really "fix" the issue so much as work around it but it's still something to try to the unskilled electrical person

Well I cleaned my cousin's nonfunctional power button and got it back in working order so I thought maybe the rom could be my problem sonce cleaning didn't work but maybe it is just permanently damaged.

Also there is actually an option on cm7 to use the volume rocker to wake the device which I am using I would just like restore use of my power button.
Check out mobiletechvideos.com for the repair. Very well known and reputable around these xda forums...

I think this is a hardware issue and not a rom issue, I've never heard of a supported ROM causing the power button to not work. Have you tried a key test in recovery? If it detects the button then yes it's a rom issue if not then it's hardware.
Mobiletechvideos.com is very good, never used personally but I've seen a lot of people take their cappys to them to fix USB ports etc.

I don't understand the information produced when I do the key test. I get "Key: 217". Another try produced "Key: 217" "Key:158" I don't understand the codes and I can't seem to find them online.
When you press the power key, it should spit out a number. The number isn't important so much as the fact that it RECOGNIZES that the button was pressed. If that's the case I don't think it's hardware and rather software.

It could be but again it could still be a hardware issue. In my experience with the captivate my power button started out sporadically popping up the power menu. Then it quit working all together. Then one day it just started working again. And still to this day it will occasionally act up again. When it does I haven't changed anything to do with my software setup.

True, but if it always works during the keytest and never once actually booted into the rom, then it would be software. My iPhone 3GS used to have a broken sleep button, so I just ended up remapping it to the volume keys and that was fine for me. Less work and never really found it a big deal especially with older devices.

[SOLVED]HTC One M7 thinks I use buttons, doesn't respond.

Hi all!
First of all, I'm not sure if I'm doing everything right here, so excuse me if I'm doing something wrong
I'm new.
I've had my HTC One M7 from aliexpress.com for 2 weeks and 2 days now.
Have had great fun of it, nothing seemed wrong, was working perfectly. There were some rumours about an unofficial android-version that was put on this phone, which might be the problem..
Everytime I turn the phone screen on it thinks I hold/doubletap/tap/repeatedly tap the home button, and sometimes when I power it off it thinks I hold the volume down-button and takes a screenshot.. When I finally get to type my 4-digit pin code, it unlocks, goes to home screen, does the same again. Seems like my phone thinks I'm using the buttons..
I've changed settings (in a legit official way via Settings) of my home button to Hold for menu, Hold and swipe up for Google Search, and double-tap for recent apps..
Have tried factory reset twice, have tried rebooting it over and over, have tried almost anything.. I'm at the point of buying a new phone now, because I fear that HTC will not help me because it's an unofficial version of Android.. Any suggestions?
Everytime I open an app it just closes it and goes to home, sometimes before it does that it opens recent apps.. After that it just freezes and I can't touch it. Sometimes after waiting a couple of seconds, I can tap the screen and maybe it's fast enough to open for example WhatsApp, and then it just shuts off and does what I just stated.
Really weird!
I'm quite desperate. Could a custom ROM (Cyanogen or Android lollipop) fix this perhaps?
Please, help

This is purely a hardware issue. Your home button is somehow always in "on" position. Given it's a capacitive button, it could be the digitizer or a scratch on the home button area

Any idea on how to fix this?
This is somewhere about what I mean, read my reply also.
This might even be closer to what I mean.
Should I just send it back to HTC or can I fix this myself, with your heroic help?

Seems like just the thing I wrote. Considering it's a hardware issue you could replace the screen-digitizer assembly by yourself if you are familiar with that kind of work. I tried once on my old Desire and fried the motherboard, so I don't have cojones to do it [emoji6]
