Need new accessory feedback! - Nexus 7 Accessories

Hi team!
I was looking to get some input from the forum members about creating an adapter for the nexus 7 that would be a male micro USB input that had 2 USB inputs and 1 female micro usb. The function would be to be able to use simultaneously, a mouse and keyboard while charging your tablet. Also obviously you can pair a mouse and keyboard to one BT node, so it could leave a USB input available for thumb drives, externals ect... Would you guys buy one? Whats on the list of accessories the nexus 7 needs and new models to come?
Thanks for the input.

Wouldn't a pogo pin adapter let you do the same thing? I know there would be a big market for that.

Whats a pogo pin adapter? And those are available already?

The pogo pins are the dots on the left side of the device. They can be used in a dock, which does not exist yet. I don't know if it's possible to make an adapter for the pogo pins that works without the help of gravity.
For your USB-only adapter users would need to root and flash a kernel that's capable of OTG charging (like the faux123 kernel). Normally the host device (Nexus 7) feeds the OTG-peripherals with power. It can't be charged over the same micro USB connector. After switching the kernel to OTG-charging and replugging the peripherals, the host device can be charged by your adapter.

Standard usb port adapter

Where is this at for the tab. Has anyone found it yet. I dont know if maybe froyo does not support the usb host mode needed or what. I saw that it was comming and yet cannot seem to find it. It was supposed to plug into the data port on the tab and give you the ability to attatch regular usb peripherals.
Any info is greatly appreciated

FWIW I saw a USB dock at Home Plus (Tesco for you guys in the UK) the other day for 29,000 KRW. Although I can't be sure, it appeared to be just a USB only dock but it looked like the HDMI dock recently reviewed on here.

you should try out the Elan Mobidapter, it's a micro SD to USB adapter with integrated USB Host. i'm using the Mobidapter often and im happy with it, but you can only use USB Storages with it. No keyboard support.
BTW: Android itself doesn't have or support an USB Host.

That's not entirely true. Most android builds don't have the necessary usb host support as part of the kernel, but there's nothing to prevent someone from compiling it or adding it in as a module. The Tab is/was supposed to do this OOTB, and based on the pinout information posted elsewhere, there is at least kernel support for determining if host mode should be enabled. With a modified iPod connector from Sparkfun I was able to get the Tab's AccessoryManager process (I think that's what it was called) to see a non-supported device plugged in (externally-powered USB hard drive enclosure), even if it couldn't enumerate it. It could be because I didn't connect the requisite +5V for downstream devices, or because there is no usb_storage module available. More testing needs to be done on this before we write it off completely. Hopefully Samsung will just release their solution(s) sooner than later.
That is what I wish they would do. But im afraid with the tab10.1 it may be put on the back burner

How did you modify the ipod connector? I have a few ipod/iphone cables lying around but they seem backwards compared to the sgt connector and difficult to modify.
I'm thinking about buying some sgt connectors or cables from china to play with.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Unfortunately I could not find a supplier of the "mirrored" iPod connectors that the SGT uses. I contacted many China-based component mfgs and none could point me in the right direction for that stupid dock connector. So I got the iPod one from SparkFun, used an xacto knife and small file to grind off the material on either side of the connector that keys it into the mating iPod connector. This allows you to invert it and plug it into the SGT, which then gives you access to all 30 pins. The cheap charging/sync cables that you can get from ebay and the likes only come with 5-7 pins connected, and the rest missing.

you know what sucks? I had a $100 haipad that had a microusb jack and came with a 6" adapter cable. guess what? you could plug in usb sticks, a usb mouse, or a usb keyboard. worked perfectly. mouse had a pointer, keyboard worked without a popup, it was all quite magical.
that was on a 2.1 resistive touchscreen chinese tablet.
why the hell can't the tab to this?

Powered USB hubs

Hi everyone.
I'm about to buy a powered USB hub with 4 ports... it's a hub that draws its own power from a wall socket, so it doesn't have to draw current from the Galaxy Note.
Would it work? I'd connect it to the note via an USB OTG cable, and plug it in a wall socket... then connect my A4Tech mouse and flexible keyboard (both wired, of course) to it... It should work, right?
For what it's worth, the USB Hub I'm going to buy is this one. Not really famous . Oh yeah, the page is in Romanian language...
Just did a google search and found these.. Link, and link 2
So i think it should work..

Saw that video... was surprised to see an external storage device works in parallel with a wireless mouse receiver! Didn't know the latter would even be supported!
Oh well, I've seen people saying that the S2 provides a bit more power through OTG... hence it would work with multiple devices.
Guess I'll see for myself tomorrow... will get a chance to test the hub before I buy it. Fingers crossed . I'm one step closer to turning my phone into a real computer, haha .
If it draws power from the wall socket it means that your portable hard drives should work as well.

No matter the hub... It just needs additional separate power. Okay

Let's keep our fingers crossed. Please let us know if it works.
Good Luck!!
Did it work?

Alright, so I bought an USB OTG cable and the above mentioned USB hub.
The USB hub has one mini-USB port, one 5V power supply port, and 4 different USB 2.0 ports.
I have a lot of Nokia chargers... neither fit in the 5V power supply port!
So... since I don't own a USB 2.0 A-A cable, I cannot connect the hub to a mini-USB charger and the OTG cable at the same time.
I figured I could use a USB 2.0 A-A cable to connect the OTG cable to one of the 4 ports of the Hub, while it is drawing current from a mini-USB charger, but... I don't have such a cable.
I'll return the USB hub tomorrow.
I found a PlayStation 3 bluetooth keyboard which also has a mouse (tiny track"ball") and I think I'm going to buy that...
I wish there were USB hubs with their own power adapters / chargers on the market... that would NOT cost $100 .
Yup. I'm done.
I returned the USB Hub, and I sold the USB OTG cable to a friend (instead of returning it to the seller, who would probably be stunned by the fact that I'd have wanted to return such a simple thing, lol).
I guess I'm done with these sorts of things, at least for the time being.
Instead of hooking up a mouse & keyboard with insanely long wires and get entangled in them and choke myself to death... (if I get to make it work)... I'll rather buy a $30 PS3 bluetooth keyboard with a mouse track"ball".
Oh well...

Technical hdmi dock question

Ok lets try and see if I can explain what I mean... im interested in the new smartdock (it has hdmi 3 full size usb ports and charging jack) looks great but its not released here in the uk and its gonna be expensive.
Now I have a generic ebay dock on its way with charge and sync capabilities it has 2 micro usb ports i was wondering if it would be possible to plug a mhl hdmi adapter into one of the micro usb ports of the dock and use the dock for my tv out needs sounds simple enough but...
This is where I get a bit confused I hear the galaxy note 2 supports a new 11pin micro usb mhl hdmi adapter and the old 5 pin hdmi adapter used on the note 1 and s2 wont work. So I suppose the note 2 micro usb socket is 11pin the new mhl hdmi adapter required is 11pin... does anyone know if standard usb architecture on generic docks would support 11pin or 5 pin mhl hdmi as if the docks architecture is only 5 pin it obviously wont work as it would be going from 11pin (phone) through 5pin (the dock) to 11pin (the mhl hdmi). I hope someone understands what I mean.
Or maybe someone could explain to me the differences between 5pin and 11pin and maybe I can work it out myself.
Im totally confused as I thought all usbs were the same apart from speed and that was the beauty of usb its universal serial bus.

The s3 and note 2 can ouput multi-chanell audio through hdmi. I guess that's why . So far as I know none of the docks supports that configuration....dock...usb...mhl. The smartdock is the only one . I'll go that way...

The SGN2 micro USB port has may features:
Charging (up to 2A)
OTG Host mode
MHL video/audio
USB Audio stereo output
Docking Profile
If you dig deep into the USB spec. you will find how these seperate features all come together by use of the micro USB - ID Sense pin 5.
My guess is if you attach a SGN2 > generic dock > w/ USB (x2) > HDMI cable > HDMI display <<<< this cannot work as the USB ports have no way to convey the ID Sense pin to the micro USB port of the SGN2.
I'm waiting on stock for the smart dock. I wish it had a method to pivot landscape though.

App - Ultimate Rotation Control can sort that (using it with the Smart Dock I have presently). Tasker should also be up to the task of sorting rotation issues with the Smart Dock.
Ah so you think it wont work through the generic dock this is shame as it would be a money saver and I have one on the way. I hoped the dock port might just work as an extension of the micro usb port on the phone meaning the mhl hdmi would work as usual but I had my doubts.
I have got an app called orientation control from the play store it was 96p and is very handy and easy to force landscape it even forces lanscape on the stock homescreen great for docking.

OTG USB adapter for the TF701

Found this on amazon for the Vivo tab, which uses the same 36-pin connector as the TF701. So I bought it for $20US hoping it would work with the 701 and it does! Plugged in the OTG adapter and attached my sandisk extreme usb 3 thumbdrive. Used the included SD/uSD card adapter to connect a couple SD cards and had no problems. Didn't do any speed tests or anything, just wanted to make sure they worked, and they did.

Wow... Great find!
Hey - happen to have a PS3 controller you could test with? Almost bought the dock purely for this purpose, so I'm dying to know if plugging a controller in through USB would work...
If this really is fully supported by the tf701t, I'm seriously questioning why they didn't say so?

No problem. There is another way to find out. Do you have a USB mouse and/or keyboard handy? If you wouldn't mind testing these basic peripherals, we could really verify if this thing provides host mode for more than disk drives.
If so, I'm buying!

Standard mouse and keyboard both work fine when plugged into the OTG adapter.
Shocking. Why in the world would Asus not bother marketing this toward the TF community too?!
Glad you found this. Thanks for sharing and testing... Off to buy!

That's good idea, but unfortunately I can't buy this thing. There are blutooth usb-hub, for example _ttp://usb.brando.com/prod_detail.php?prod_id=00142
Will it work?
can someone find me the right product on the german amazon site? or uk?
i cant find
Can you charge and use USB with this?
Nice
Finaly, i recieved my OTG USB adapter today, and it works perfectly.
Thanks for the link.
or you can just buy the one meant for the transformer and it's a few dollars cheaper if you can't get the other one. Just doesn't come with the SD card adapter. This is the one that I intend to buy once I get my tablet

Also can you simultaneously power the device and provide input using a usb hub(plug in keyboard and mouse for example)?
I went to the computer store. Bought the following:
The adapter which is 2.0 by the way.
USB 3.0 HUB with Power Adaper.
A male to A male cable.
While connected to a the HUB, and while the device is on its says "NOT CHARGING". I turn it off(tablet), Not getting a charge while connected to a the hub. It also drained it while the tablet is off. Nevermind the hub for power.
NO CHARGE FROM HUB
While connected to the PC it drained the power down to 6% then went back up to 50%. Not sure about that because it seemed to charge while it was off.
NO CHARGE FROM PC
As for the power adapter that comes with the tablet to it. Not charging while ON. Turn it off and no charge.
NO CHARGE FROM ASUS POWER ADAPTER
SO no it doesnt charge in any practical sense from this VIVO adapter as far as i can tell. Maybe its the MALE to MALE cable. I dont know. But its not worth trying if there a chance of drain killing it.
Unfortunately from the adapter there is no media connection or usb debugging to pc or usb hub afiak.
NO MEDIA CONNECTION OR USB DEBUGGING
The good news is that the device can connect to the USB HUB and the keyboard , mouse and thumb drive work flawlessly together.

Possible to hook multiple devices up via micro usb port?

Hello all. Planning to get a MHL 2.0 cable for my note 3 but I also want to hook up a keyboard and mouse. I have a logitech k/b that uses wireless signal via a USB dongle. I figured the OTG cable would suffice but naturally once the MHL cable is in, there is no way to also use the OTG cable. Curious if there is some sort of hub that allows at least 1x micro usb and 1x full size usb, or some sort of splitter? I realize a bluetooth keyboard and mouse is probably another solution but would prefer to avoid if I could.
Thanks!
In other words, you want to make your phone a desktop computer?
yeh basically. Easier to work while on my lunch break. Thanks
Yes.
I made a pretty ghetto setup but it works.
What you will need is an OTG cable
A stand
And a powered USB hub
Mine is home made, but I believe they have this options made into a dock for this phone.

After my post I came across the Samsung Smart Dock, which looks to do what Im trying to accomplish. May invest in that, a little pricey though
As for the idea above, I still need to have a Micro USB for the MHL right? Or can I get an adapter to do USB to Micro USB to make it work?
You need an 11 pin adapter for MHL. Samsung and rocket fish sell the correct equipment.
