Hey gang,
I just bought a used HERO for my mother and would like to root it and load a custom rom. I will follow this guide to root it : Step By Step Way to root Using Flashrec(Updated 4/5)
I need some advice on a good clean rom though.
Below are my 'wanted features' in a rom.
Android 2.1
HTC Sense
stable (no need for constant reboots)
App2SD
good battery life
NOT overclocked
NOT themed (she just wants what she sees in the commercials. Stock look and colors)
keyboard with voice input (she sucks at typing and just wants to "talk to text")
LWP (optional but she probably won't use)
I looked at the rom area... and got lost with all of the choices.
She will never change a single setting once it is configured for her.
she just wants an "Android".
Thnx!
Everything except that stupid Blue Echo Rom, that thing is horrible

Hi PapaSmurf
I don't follow you...
Please link me to a ROM that fits her needs (if that exists)
Try nfinitiefx45 stock 2.1 deodexed or damage control 2.09.01
Sorry I can't link from the xda app.
Also, if the phone already has 2.1 on it, there is a new rooting method. If it has 1.5, flashrec should work fine.

Darchstar 2.8 !! My phone never ran so smooth I have very very little keyboard Lag.
Sooo, why not keep it bone stock since otherwise you'll void her warranty for nothing?

I want Apps2SD so she doesn't run out of room so fast. I am sure she will add apps and not clean up after herself.

+1 for nfinitefx45's stock ROM. but get the odex version since you won't be using themes
Fresh is also a good option with slight visual tweaks (uses HTC Espresso launcher + vanilla lock screen)
of the 2 i'd guess the nfinitefx ROM is more stable since it's closer to stock, but I honestly haven't tried fresh.

Lmao cold bro just cold. That's OK I prefer my red dawn anyways. Lol
My sig says it all....
(although DD is on a new version now... and does not have sense, but with a few simple flashes, who needs it?)
(PS, LWP sux, will not work on most roms (ie, not sticking on standby), and a batt drain, and slows sys down. dont bother.)
(PPS, after re-reading your OP, I am wondering why you are looking for a custom rom at all? b-sides the lwp thang, stock has all that, no theme, stable. root is good for a few extra things and I recommend it, but perhaps use a stock rom for stability and consistency....?)

ah yes, unless you go for a cyan rom, or some other 2.2 build, which I dont recommend personally, yet.
and make sure you have a class 6 card at least for a2sd...
I think you just want another Hero to play with lol. If you really want a custom rom, the odex version of Nfinite's stock rom has gobs of internal memory and is snappier than any deodexed rom.

Lmao um a2sd can be used on any class SD card. U need a class 4 card if u want to move dalvik cache over but even still it makes the phone unstable.
Go with odexed version of nifinite stock rom. It has a2sd plus is fast and what ur looking for
wouldnt fresh be good for him to flash?
sounds like what he needs

well, I have been told by countless ppl here that anything less than a C6 "does not work well", frankly not knowing what that exactly means, but apparently causes instability/data corruption? whateva.
guess you would know, right?
dont use it, dont care. just trying to be helpful.
+1 for odexed version of nifinite stock rom. i think that wold be perfect, and easiest to "suport" if needed.
Thank you all for the help!
Here is what I did.
Rooted using this 2.1 guide:
[GUIDE] How to Root Sprint 2.1 Release for CDMA Hero
Flashed the following ROM:
[ROM] Sprint 2.27.651.6 STOCK Deoxed w/A2SD 2.7.5_pf4a |7/31/2010|
(i have not tried JIT just yet...)
All seems perfect! I believe my Ma will love this. Who knows... maybe Pop will want one too =)
Thnx again!
~Syn
I would suggest leaving jit alone for now, it is far too unstable in my experience.

Then u haven't used the new jit. Cause the one nfinite and I are using is very stable and very fast. There will be an update out soon for it.
Hi guys,
Currently running MCR FR15 but was thinking of giving CM7 a try...
Was wondering which people thought was the better rom at the moment in terms of stability / everything working / best battery life?
Cheers in advance.
I would stick with FR15 for now. It is very reliable. CM7 is way too buggy at the moment. Tried it for 1 day and had a couple of reboot.
i have tried both, CM7 is really not ready yet.
Cm7:
Flash video curruption, Sound stuttering, SOUND distortion , USB Mount to PC bug ,
Most important,
CM7 11. has a bug not all people has been experiencing yet, which the EXTernal USB card is not detecting under Recovery mode. THis **** end up having me NVflash my system, and lost everysingle thing on the device.
Note: if you read the forum , and i am not the only one that has this issue.
i will stay with FR15 for sure.
But to me i rather use STOCK LG ROM, issue free. if you can live with a bit slower UI and installation , other than that i think Custom rom isn't really that much better than LG stock rom with all the issue we are experiencing right now
I tried both, too.
MoDaCo feels more solid with less bug but the battery time kills me. Even with all apps suspended it still drains 10%+ overnight.
CM7 is quite buggy, yes. But I managed to get it running quite a-ok. The most important things work well (phone, gps, usb-storage, youtube, gmail etc...). There are a lots of issues with usb-storage doesnt work for some people and the video driver is still full of bugs (broken flash video, on-off animation don't work yet, screen turns on twice at wake ). Still, the best feature of this CM7 gotta be the battery time which is really really really important for me. Installed CM7 nightly 11 2 night ago and the battery drain has been virtually zero overnight. I will have to monitor it a few more days thought. Just wiped the battery stats yesterday so it might have not been correctly showed yet.

CM7 is completely separate to the recovery, and has no bearing on it. Whatever caused the problem was not CM7.

Totally agree with u.
I would stick with stock until CM7 is ready. Paul will lose interest in the O2X like he does with every device and development will stop. CM7 has a much larger development community and when the final builds are released it will be the perfect Android device.
But to be fair, Paul doesn't stop development on a device until his ROM is as good as he thinks he can get it (which, as I found on my Hero & Blade is pretty damn good - not installed FR15 on my O2X, as still thinking about taking it back).
Tested allmost all cm7 nightlies till v11. Its a dawn good rom, but not reliable at the moment because of the freezes and reboots. I will definitely install cm7 final but till then i continue using fr15 FEAR edition (stable and smoothness ****in rocks )
Hi guys,
Bringing this one back from the dead - we're a month on from the original post... is there any change?
Is MCR (FR17) still the best custom rom?
Of has CM or one of the FR18 roms from here surpassed it?
CM7 has come along way, annoying freezes are a thing of the past.
I'd recommend a modaco based rom. I'm running fear edition and it's nice and fast. Cm7 still has some bugs.
I'd recommend making a nandroid and testing a few out for yourself. Backup and restore is a fairly simple process

I'm running CM7 .42 build at the moment, and I must say I'm pretty impressed. Overall feel is better than with Fr16 (haven't used 17+, since that's when I went on to ecperiment with CM7 nightlies), app installation is faster, Gingerbread (should I say more? Well, yes: it brings UI changes I prefer to Froyo, like the widget selection screen, faster UI overall).
I had issues with Slick2x and Spoelstra's GB ROMs rendering my Wifi unstable and unable to connect after a while, but I have flashed CM7 off the official source and it is bloody stable, fast and I have yet to experience that WiFi bug again. (I have had one reboot, but I am pretty sure it was a sucky app (errrr, game) that caused it. Hard to blame CM7 for that.)
I'm currently not going back to Paul's ROMs for a while. I'll stay a subscriber though: he has magic fingers and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do when LG finally gets us GB....
I'm using the latest CM7 Nightly, it works perfect, but the only issue is that i'm not able to get the internal sd-card mounted.
Anybody got a solution for this?
Look in /mnt/emmc
Thanks, but...
For example the camera won't see it. I think camera app doesn't know the mountpoint. Same at gallery.
Currently, I don't have an external sd-card...
I'll have a try by editing the vold.fstab, perhaps that's it
Edit: just renaming emmc with sdcard and vice versa doesn't solve the problem.
Edit2: It works!
Tested fr17 fearless today, it's nice and quick but i just miss something.. don't know what. Back to cm7

+1 for Modaco or fear Rom CM7 just isn't there yet for an everyday rom, It's close. I still get sound missing or stuttering in MOST music players that only goes away after a reboot but come back randomly. A fair few games just refuse to run under CM7 that run fine under any other non 2.3 rom. So for me any 2.2 based rom is at least usable as 2.3 isn't quit there yet. If you however never use your phone for music/photo or games then CM7 may just be ok for you.
Kernel
Sorry, but you and 'ever fail to install rom with some kernel?? Let me explain:
Device: Lg optimus dual root
Rom can not install anything they "Flesch" kernel Modak r10.
have no problem when I install the nightly cyanogen, all the others I do not like me on whether the cell remains blocked startup that says LG.
Someone knows how to help? Thanks.

Not 100% sure what you're trying to say...I recommend a wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition then dalvik cache in clockwork recovery. Then install your new ROM. If that doesnt work try nvflash back to stock.
Can anybody point me to the best battery saving kernal for the sgs with cm7. And exactly how to install it as I'm new to android and having abit of trouble with it. Thanks

There is not an easy answer. Some people have the best battery life from the stock kernel though most say that better battery life can be found on one of the custom kernels.
Now that Bilboa1 has gone off to the SGS II, that means either the Platypus kernel or the Glitch kernel. Both of the two have strengths and weakness so read through their threads a bit to get an idea. Most importantly, both allow Undervolting which can really improve battery longevity but requires some experimenting to find the right levels for you.
All I can suggest is spend a day with each one, and stick with the one that works best for you in terms of both speed and performance.
Make sure you download the one that is set up for the Nightly you are running...and remember that just because the current version of Platypus is best for you, doesn't mean that with the next Nightly, the Glitch version won't be better for you. CM7 rewards the person who experiments and understands that their phone's software is a fluid, living thing.
As for how you flash one, it is quite easy. Stock is built into each nightly, so to get back to it, just reflash the Nightly. Also remember that each Nightly will therefore force you back to stock, and you will need to wait for the kernels to be updated and released, usually a few hours after the Nightly hits Sourceforge.
1) Download the kernel of your choice (or all of them) and the Cleaning zip (links on the kernel threads)
2) Place it on your internal SD card (using Root Explorer or just flash it from the directory it is downloaded to).
3) Boot into Recovery.
4) Select Flash Zip from SD Card
5) Flash the Cleaning Zip.
6) Flash the kernel
7) Reboot
See, not so bad.
+1 cant add anything to that to make it better.
finding the right kernel and maybe a little undervolting is the only way (for now)
Thanks for the advice, So at the moment im on Cm7 11052011 and the latest is 15052011. How do i get to that without having to set up from new again when i get there? Will my phone be how it is now once i reflash it?
I installed Platypus on 20110509 (SGS I9000 international) and it kind of broke everything (boot and recovery not working anymore)
I had to reflash a stock-kernel with odin to fix it.
Coming from a stock 2.2.1-ROM with Speedmod-kernel, the batterylife was kind of demotivating

As long as you don't use the "INITIAL"-zips you should be fine.
I have looked and I may have missed it, but I was wanting to know for certain if miui or cm roms can install on stock rooted 2.2.2 frg83 droid 1/og. I have miui on my x and my husband FINALLY let me get my hands on his (my old) droid. I can not find any where that lists the system requirements. I really dont want him to see me have to sbf his phone or anything... that may make him think I killed it. it has cwm, titanium backup and rom manager pro.. any link to a list of roms I can use would be great I am sorry if I over looked this somewhere. It seems the droid 1 has been left in the dust.
Thanks in advance
Decided to sell my acer liquid metal and get one of these but it's not playing ball.
Bought it used with it already rooted with CWM installed running CM7 KANG
I wanted to put CM9 KANG onto it but it took ages, for some reason the phone will not work as a mass storage device?
I ended up putting the SD card directly into a usb adaptor and putting a ROM onto it that way.
Now that CM9 KANG is on it still won't work properly as a mass storage device and on top of that there's no google market or anything
And were's the face unlock?
Build quality is amazing though!!
The USB Mass storage is still a bug of CM9!
Here are the google apps, you need to flash them over the rom in CWM:

No need to wipe.

Thanks!! What's the best overclocking kernal to use with CM9?
Hi, congratulations on your new phone.
For market and face unlock etc, you'll need the latest gapps, which you can find via google, xda search or here
With regards to usb mass storage; I haven't tried it myself, but heard that you can use MTP. My vague recollections from my nook color:
Go to settings
Go to application/memory (forgot, don't have Touchpad on me)
Top right corner there is the onscreen menu button, click on it.
Go to computer connections
Click on MTP or something like that.

Ironkernel, look at my signature.
Just flashed a new kernal and so far so good.
Graphics performance is all over the place, Neocore and quadrant have shown massive gains but nenamark 1&2 along with Taiji has all dropped, the Taiji score on this 2x is 1/3 of what I was getting on my old phone!

Please bear in mind that the ICS builds are all Alpha builds, so really only suitable for developers to analyse. They are not fully working ROM's and cannot be expected to fully work just yet. When it goes to Beta, it will still have issues but less of them, and less severe.

Isn't there an offical ICS update on the way from LG?
Might move over to 2.3 then, Not really a fan of CM... Well not a fan off all the crapware they add....
Best ROMS for me are the ones that stay true to stock....
Can anyone recommend a 2.3 rom that stays tru to stock that will support overclocking?
There is an official LG update on its way, but knowing LG, it might take a whole year so don't get too excited about it...
Uhmm you could use this stock rom:

Along with this custom kernel:

But I would advise you to read for yourself and make up your own mind
Congrats!! But... please search hard and you will find all your answers there.. no need opening new thread
