Yeah, good luck with them catching anyone unlocking their tablets unless they are on a data plan.
And since I can make phone calls with my N7, is it technically a phone????

Also wtf, " For example, an ebook reading device might be considered a “tablet,” as might a handheld video game device or a laptop computer." Can you be more broad when it comes to description? I guess you can't because then you would be Apple. :silly:
If a tablet has a 3g modem is it a phone then or a tablet? Have fun trying to classify these things, especially when tablets are just blown up phones with or without the modem. Our government is morons.
Google allows the unlocking of their devices, so you have nothing to worry about as long as you buy nexus. Even if you don't buy a nexus device, I don't see how the law could be properly enforced. I wouldn't worry.

doesn't even have to be a nexus device, any android device is safe since it's open source from Google.
Plus unlike Apple, don't see Google suing anyone for unlocking or rooting their os.
Google allows us to unlock...pretty darn easily actually.
What's gonna happen when root methods are provided outside the US?
IMO the whole thing is stupid. I have paid for ALL my apps, and I refuse to use ANY Android device without root access. So why am I being punished?
I HATE ADS, and have no problem paying for apps to not have ads. However if a paid version isn't available, then I still want my ads blocked...

What about apps by developers from countries that don't have the luck to be included in the merchant account list? Their only way to monetize their hard work is ads and using their apps with ads blockers is not fair at all. If you hate ads that much, please stop using the apps that are supported by them.

Yeah, since my Nexus 7 is wifi only, how does unlocking it violate carrier rights? It's not a phone, it's a wifi tablet. Unlocking and rooting gives me access to all the hardware and features of the software, which I have rights to as the licensee. If they don't want you to have access to the full ability of the OS, they should remove it. If it's there, then it's mine to use per the license.

I read thru all the below comments.. This new law does not make it legal to unlock your device. It puts the control into the hands of your devices carrier as to rather you can unlock it or not. Now the carriers all just need to do like at&t has been firm on.Just say NO unlocked devices allowed on there Network.. This is a step back word in my opinion. I hear about people all the time jail breaking there i phone or ipad to side load pirated apps. They say i tunes charge to much for them. But the android community STRONGLY screams to everyone to pay the developers for the apps. Android apps are reasonable priced as well. This is due to the developer having more control and giving less money to google.. I think this will be the way into the future. To make devices and phones even more disposable.. I so hope google stands up and puts this crap away.
If xda follows this new law. They will have to take down every hack for every tablet and get permission from phone carriers to post the ability to unlock and root phones on there networks.. NEXUS Phones tied to a carrier follows the same laws .
if i read incorrectly please explain to me..

Not quite correct. This just means that carrier unlocking is no longer exempted from the DMCA. In other words, OEMs can sue folks that post a narrow scope of exploits. This pretty much is a moot point considering that the only OEM that was doing this was Apple and the Jesus Phone is no longer exclusive to big blue. As there never was an exemption specific to tablets, nothing there has changed. DMCA exemptions are reviewed and revised every three years.
There's a lot of hystronics and FUD going on about this, driven partly by a desire to generate traffic to certain sites I'm sure. In the end, it is just as I said before... much ado about nothing. The sky is not any closer to falling than it was twelve months ago.

So if you cruise over to phandroid you will find this article that states that Google lost their appeal to lift the ban on the sale of the Galaxy Nexus due to Google Now infringement on Apple patents. Notably, the patent on voice search for phone applications a la Siri. The article states Google will be rolling out an update that will limit Google Now voice searches to web related content only. What a farce! Since this is a core Jellybean feature, I'm speculating that this will affect the Nexus 7 as well.
Will these patent infringement tactics from Apple ever end?

Oh, but it only prevents Google now from pulling from contacts and apps. So apparently, you won't be able to say Call Suzy. Or text Mary. Or play music.
Hopefully will still be able to say Open Phone
And the cards are still there (for weather sports traffic etc)
And you know Devs will bring the functionality back so no worries ( I already have the full Google now sans voice search and it is pretty neat.
lol
um
Much of the infringement spat has related to Android's use of a unified search interface, but according to Google the standout feature of Android 4.1 — Google Now — will be safe when 4.1 arrives for the general public. "This just relates to the Galaxy Nexus," the spokesperson told us, "and not a product on the Galaxy Nexus."
Well it was actually Apple and Samsung in the lawsuit and its not banned yet Apple still has to pay close 100 million dollars for damages that Samsung might face for lost sales if Apple actually loses the case. There is no ruling that the Galaxy Nexus does violate Apples Patents just that it might and Apple wants the sales stopped until a ruling has been made. The Patch is Googles oh $#!7 button just in case it does get banned, to prevent loss of sales during the no doubt long and drawn out court process to come if Apple does Dish out the money.
I feel like Apple will back down and not dish out the 100 million though, because if the push that button its only a matter of time before one of these companies pulls a patent of there own that can get the iProduct line banned too. The US software patent system is pretty messed up right now.

This Patented VS Opensource Software is a real mess. The problem is the Nature of Opensource make it hard to log exact dates and who owns the rights, and the patent office is sure as hell not going to check all the opensource software before issuing a patent.
Hell Even the GNU guy thinks the Linux guy stole his stuff and didn't give him credit, or rather that programmers unknowingly integrated the two. Though He just seem more upset he didn't create working kernel first and isn't getting the credit he's due.
Anyway this brings up a question, how is Opensource software log and dated in case a company like Apple does file a penitent for something that is previously opensource, and how does one prove it pre-existed the patent?
And check out this video from 1994

I have faith in the people on this forum that something will be worked out to re-enable this.
And I really hope that thing involves putting '#boycottApple=True" in a configuration file somewhere.
From the context of the article it seems like it will only affect the Galaxy Nexus. I hope it doesn't get pushed to our tablets as well. I'm sure our devs could find a way around it but the thing is they shouldn't have to because Apple is throwing a hissy fit.
If Apple spent as much time actually working on competing with Android instead of attempting to kill it (which will never happen) then they might actually innovate or invent something new for once. I'm so annoyed at how broken the patent system is when it comes to software.
Anyone have any further evidence or at least what they think will happen when it comes to the Nexus 7 and this ordeal? Will we also get stripped of functionality?
Doesn't affect the Nexus 7 or Google Now. But you can no longer use the search button to search apps on your phone. Because for some reason you can patent that.
Edit- stupid spelling errors!
How STUPID. Well The late Steve Jobs said he was ready to use every dime apple had to destroy Google. I guess his legacy lives on.

Yeah er..
I don't think this has anything to do with googre nao, but the default search.
Although you can bet that they'll try to go after that next.
Personally I expect the ban to lifted on appeal anyway. If it doesn't then this will se t a worrying precedent in the US courts and could open the floodgates to dozens of these petty cases.
From what I understand this change shouldn't effect the functionality of Google Now as the dispute is focused on the Galaxy Nexus product NOT the android system itself.
Some guy on Phandroid suggested everyone should call Apple customer support at the same time and ask why they can't order a Galaxy Nexus. I'm normally against actions like that, but the lack of an Apple twitter to vent frustration on is killing me.

You kind of have to look at Google's motives for Android in the first place. They saw the importance of the future of mobile and that iOS was in the process of owning it. They launched Android primarily to protect their advertising sales business and then started monetizing content sales through Play. So if their motivation is advertising and content sales what difference does it make whose name is on the physical device or if people know their device is "Android?" I'm sure they aren't pleased with the forking taking place (Amazon) or the overlays being added that F-up the update process (100MM Galaxy's sold) but at the end of the day their well positioned in mobile and raking in tons of profit from mobile advertising and content sales. Google makes the same in those categories whether the masses buy a “Galaxy,” “HTC Sense,” or a Nexus where Android’s still fairly prominent.
“Galaxy” now leads “Android” as a smartphone search term which kind of tells you what volume and marketing does for consumer brand awareness. Samsung Electronics spent $12B in marketing and promotion in 2012. HTC’s market capitalization (the value of the entire company) is only $8B. That amount of marketing spend buys you a lot of aided and unaided brand awareness.
"Samsung ‘Galaxy' has become a more popular search term than Android for web users searching for information about Android-powered smartphones, highlighting many handset makers' fears that Samsung is becoming bigger than the other Android manufacturers and that the smartphone market is slowly becoming a two-handset, rather than an operating systems, race."

You need to look at this long term. Samsung definitely has the ambitions to become a new apple, i.e. build "their own ecosystem". OS (Tizen), advertising, app store etc etc.
As they already have hooked enough of users on their brand/touch wiz, next step will be to release tizen and make sure there is a certain mass of critical apps and after this samsung can start migrating users over.
Users don't give a damn if it is android/qnx/tizen/firefox os or whatever. As long as it looks the same and feels the same. Which what touchwiz is for.
So I guess el goog will need to do something if it is already not too late. Sadly the motorola is not the solution.
Anyone know anything about this?

I'm curious about this too. I've been checking the updater and theres no software update available.
The screenshots in that article are for the Canadian variant -- G900W8.
It'll probably take a while for any update to get "certified" by the big @, plus I think I'm going to avoid doing software and security policy updates in case an exploit for this current version is found.

For the longest time I have thought this..............
I thought I was the only one...
I too also thought this....it had occurred to me that it would be particularly clever and prudent to have your finger on the pulse of your "power users", but then it occurred to me that because it's such a smart idea, they're guaranteed NOT to do it (keeping in line with they're history). So that's my logic....
As nefarious as that sounds, it's almost guaranteed that the engineering portions of Sammy/AT&T that are responsible for security monitor forums and social media such as this. Probably even have moles portraying themselves as ignorant users.

I'm sure that engineers look at XDA and other developer/user forums out of interest or even as part of the job; but unless something directly affects Samsung or AT&T in a manner that is costing them a significant amount of money I doubt any action is made in response. Remember these are corporations, money/time is not spent chasing a relatively few users who choose modify their phones, even if it is to evade fees and/or modify a locked feature. It just doesn't make a large financial difference.
Apple certainly pursued a cease and desist strategy but I think that was mostly out of a control freak corporate culture. Other than tethering for free, what do rooting and custom ROMs actually cost AT&T or Samsung? We still buy their phones loyally and pay for the service. If it mattered enough they would take greater steps to lock stuff down, or routinely push updates to secure their devices when exploits are found.
Just my take on it - I'm a pretty paranoid dude but not in this regard. We just don't matter much to them.

the sad thing is all those files and scripts wouldn't have provided us any solution to root or unlocking the boot loader, those were qualcomm scripts and files but only for signing the mbr/mbl nothing unfortunatley to do with unlocking it or rooting the device in any manor, the certs may have been helpfull in tricking odin in to believing a custom rom was official is the only thing that i could actually see coming out of that.
and I was a little leary of the member in the first place, he offered no tangible proof that the scripts did anything all he did was list a directory of files, and when he was asked to provide proof that he actually rooted or unlocked a bootloader he refused to respond.

One thought. Samsung and Apple are both making big enterprise plays. My company in it's BYOD program is pushing Samsung hard over other Android phones because they are more locked down with corporate policies mandating encryption and forbidding rooting/jailbreaking coming soon to my employer, I can see how a locked down phone is more attractive to them and could lead to more sales, not yet.
We're not their only market, and in the grand scheme of things, there may be more money for them going this path.

What they should be doing is making business/gov contracted phone deals locked down, and leaving the consumer phones as is, that's what they should be doing. Honestly TW is pretty good now and wouldn't bother me if I couldn't flash a rom (obviously I want to), however not having root and not being able to actually delete (not just disable) bloatware is f'n annoying lol.

Yup just got my update before I read this SCREW YOU AT&T
I haven't updated any firmware or security policies. I'm perfectly fine staying as is
The two apps can be disabled, so no biggie to me. There does seems to be at least one bug fix. My recent apps button was a little wonky. It is fixed now.
I hope there isnt something in the update that further prevents root being achieved. If you go to att website there is no way to prevent update either.

AT&T marketing Geniuses....not!
More apps to disable because AT&T must think it's funny to push bloatware OTA and label it as an update. Seriously what are they thinking?
Is there actually some marketing strategist that is so out of touch with the real world as to think that people want this crap?
It boggles the mind really that senior leadership and marketing does not troll XDA for ideas that would actually help them succeed in product management.
The 1st carrier to the gate with a device that comes with nothing but vanilla android, is not boot locked, or in any other way hindered for root would (I predict) gain a 10% market share inside of 30 days. Business 101....cater to the majority ESPECIALLY when no one else is. fu***** idiots!!! Do they not realize that we all may enjoy different apps, but that is what the app marketplace is for? Some my even want At&t's apps ( lol ) but they need to put them on the play store and let people choose. You know...democracy and all that. Maybe they think that their apps give them a leg up on their competition? Really? Seriously? An app is going to make the difference of someone choosing AT&T S5 over Verizon S5? OMG please tell me they are not stupid. (I'm long winded and redundant due to hoping De La Vega is reading this btw) Evidently they need things spelled out. I certainly hope he realizes that most normal people make carrier decisions based on price of service, coverage, speed of 4G, etc. You know; that business 101 thing again. Hey Mr. Vega; how many people do you have writing code for AT&T apps? What are you spending on that? What are you paying that marketing jack ass that told you to hire people to write code for AT&T specific apps and bloatware? I hope you get where I'm going here. My God man, take a breath, sit back, clear your mind of all the hype and confusion of the bubble your in and look at this thing from the outside. Get back to the basics and provide a product and service that people want. We dont want or need to have to take the lessor of the evils (context of who has less bloat if we want a new device). Dont believe me? Attempt to find 0.1% of your customers that just has to have one of your bundled apps. Let me know how that goes for you. In the mean time the other 99.9% of us will only be getting more frustrated.
At any rate here is some contact info for At&t. I suggest we flood them with emails and try to get directly to "ATTN. Randall L. Stephenson, Ralph De La Vega"

True in the literal sense that "people on XDA". I beg to differ though in that the general majority people would not want things shoved down their throat. All people want choice over the carriers take it or leave it attitude. In addition more and more people are becoming aware of what used to be only "for geeks". My 68 year old father for instance is fully aware of the advantages of having less apps taking up more storage and/or running in the background eating up ram and battery life when he has no need for most of them. The statement "if I wanted them loaded and running I should be able to choose that for myself" or something along those lines is growing among even the "non techies". And lets face it; I would bet that most people on XDA are the defacto come to people in their families for advice on all things electronic. Therefore even a minority can have a large effect on the majority.
BTW, I have no bubble to burst. My age, maturity, and I.Q. puts me well beyond trivial things like that.

Exactly. Any company that followed the wishes/preferences of those on XDA would be out of business soon.

As above. Your looking at the small picture. Those wishes and preferences are not only those of XDA.
It's almost laughable that you are saying that a company that eliminates bloatware and possibly gives an opportunity for root would be out of business soon.
A very small example would be the fact that people are flocking to a carrier with substantially less coverage and reliability (T-Mo) because of wifi calling. A feature that AT&T and Verizon eliminated for seemingly no reason. Why? because a handful of people out of 10's of thousands might only use the device for free wifi calls versus buying service from them? How many people are going to buy a high end device averaging 650.00 to do that with? So your telling me that if AT&T released an update tomorrow that allowed easy rooting or at least got rid of bloatware and turned on wifi calling, that people would not flock to AT&T? Big picture...

There are a few out actually. The biggest issue is they are all pay retail upfront. I am specifically speaking to the fact of major carriers increasing their market share / customer base and customer loyalty through standard channels and current business practices and plans offered.
But i'll bite anyway. Lets look at Oppo. A Chinese company started on a shoe string budget and prayer mostly. I don't have the time or the room to fully explain all the numbers, but suffice it to say that if they were in America they would have set or broke dozens of records concerning initial interest, market share versus time in market, profitability, units sold, % increase in sales versus time, net worth versus initial valuation, etc, etc...
And that was for full price units from an unknown Chinese company in a market full of unknown Chinese companies that all have a low initial trust rating. Multiply their numbers X 1000 for a trusted US carrier to do anything similar with a hot trusted device
---------- Post added at 08:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:13 PM ----------
PS
Where do you think the one plus came from. That would be from the former VP of OPPO of course. He saw those numbers for the N1 and the Find and knew you don't have to be a marketing guru to see the obvious. He left a lot of money and an incredible future with Oppo to help bring out the one plus.

Haha wow. Not even sure where to start. For one it's a numbers game, throw the apps out there and maybe %10 will use it, maybe even %1. That's still more people putting money in their pocket than previously. Most of the users don't care about bloatware, if anything they view it as ATT offering them more than they got originally and at most a minor annoyance. So long as it doesn't brick their device they don't care, at most they just won't use it. The idea that "if you want it then find it on the market, and then choose ours over the competition" is just silly, why leave it to chance when you can increase your odds by putting your app on their phone directly in their face? %99.9 of users are frustrated by the addition of more bloatware or are infuriated by having it at all? we all know that's not even close to true, I've never heard a friend complain that the update to their phone added more apps. If you really think any of the higher-ups are reading your rant you're delusional. Go ahead and spam them, and again if you really think that goes directly to their inbox, you're delusional. Sure it will be addressed by someone, but it won't be any of the higher ups your trying to contact. Do you really think they're tech savvy enough to even know what you're talking about? They're put in place because they know how to manage multi-billion dollar companies, not because they know the ins and outs of a cell phone.

"shoved down their throats" is a bit of an exaggeration. They load the app on the phones, it's not like it cripples the device or stops the device from functioning unless you use it. The S5 is still a rockstar even with the bloat. I do concur that most of us here are probably the people that relatives/family go to for phone advice. However guarantee neither of my parents or any relative for that matter would care about a phone having bloatware. They want a phone that will serve a purpose and maybe they can play some games on it.

They are protecting their assets. The more options you have to use a competing service the more money they lose. reduce the ability to use the competitor and you rid yourself of that chance.
That all being said I am not a fan of bloatware, at all. Nor am I agreeing with their tactics. But step into reality. They want to maximize profits and get their users to use their apps so it can be billed to them.
I do have another theory for how much the phones are locked down these days. If anyone has followed the news; they're trying to head off phone thefts, they've spiraled out of control. Easiest way to prevent someone from stealing a phone? make sure that even if it is stolen, it can't be used anywhere because it's locked down like fort knox (pun sort of intended )
Sorry for any feathers i've ruffled.
To get back on track this update has made the phone smoother and have noticed no lag where there used to be lag before. Battery life seems better too so far.

I read the AT&T update page- what i can offer. I didn't accept the last weeks security certificate and I've been going into Running apps and stopping the AT&T OTA update process on any reboot(it doesn't seem to auto-restart) and I have not gotten any alerts or been pushed the OTA since.
I'll update if this changes.
Updated and lost my s health data. All my steps lost ?
I never get any alerts and i agree to security certificates. Also i did not update yet just want to if we can revert back with Odin or if can use Kies to get back ?
