So I'm getting a Nexus 7 for Christmas and I want to start planning ahead like what I'm going to do with it. I know it may be early but when it's close to Christmas time, I feel like a little kid again, well I'm still a kid at 17.
So I'll either be getting a 16GB or 32GB which is fine as I'll be using that OTG Adapter technique with my 32GB USB stick, which I think is pretty damn nice.
I was thinking of getting this case:

It looks nice, has a stand, it's cheap & I like it.
I'd like to ask some questions.
- What toolkit should I use to root it & that?
- Should I get a stylus?
- Is it easy flashing kernels & ROM's to it?
- What apps and games can you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Most people will say not to use toolkits and usb adb instead. Personally, i couldnt get adb working so used Wugfresh's toolkit and it worked fine. Has saved my tablet a few times too

Yes. Once you root, install a custom recovery (Clockworkmod or TWRP), i prefer TWRP, and from then on all ROM's are flashed through the recovery. Literally a few clicks.

Tool kits are meant to make life easier. Load the app, automatically unlocks, roots, and flashes CWM. Done.
I like the poetic flip case. Really helps protect it. Its $20 but nice. I also prefer the SGP Crystal Clear matte SP which is about $20 also.
I had both of those on my stolen N7 and will be buying again.

Indeed, but you learn little about the actual process itself, and may end up being attached to it and not wanting to learn about the process Then when you want to get into advanced flashing, or a major issue occurs, you'll most likely not know what to do.
In any case, toolkits might be nice for the very first time, but it is advised to not rely on them in the long run.

I honestly don't see the point of owning and android phone AND an android pad... same with having an iphone and ipad
if I had an iphone, I'd look at android pads
I was looking at the new ipad too... but I can't see myself using it for anything more than I use my phone or laptop for so I don't see the point
I was thinking about the newer ipad too, but I ended up buying a $1000 laptop instead. Lol

It makes a lot of since to have have both apple or both android. You can use your purchased apps on both devices from the same company. But you can't use your ios apps on your android and your android apps on ios. You would have to buy them all over again.
That display is really something to behold. Never seen anything like it before. Would I buy one? Nope. Would I buy an Android tablet? Nope. I have 0 use for both of them at this point.

Have fun with the rest of the sheep.
And why is that high of screen resolution needed on a 10" screen?
Just like the rest of the iDrones, ooh look it is shiny, look at the pretty colors and lights, and I only have to sign my bank account, soul, and first born child over to crapple? Sign me up! Morons!
Give crapple 500+ dollars,
Get higher screen res than is actually needed,
Tablet overheats and shuts down,
Firmware fix will just slow down CPU reducing performance,
Pay crapple hundreds more dollars for apps that aren't actually worth it,
PRICELESS!

Just for the heck of it, can you please try going to settings -> control, scrolling down and enabling USB mouse support.
With some luck that will get the camera working with the buttons.

Another thing to try is using tilt control. Go to settings -> control, and click the tilt button.
This allows you to turn with the accelerometer.
I tried now, the touchpad doesn't work with USB mouse support. Tilt control works though! I didn't think of using that...
There has to be some info on the internet on how to implement the touchpads. The "joysticks" are actually one big multitouch touchpad, so if you find some info it should be easy to make it work, since you already have mouse support! It should work like in Minecraft PE, where it works as a touchpad rather than a joystick, because it's better for turning around the camera in games like yours. I'm willing to test if you want!
EDIT: This is a tutorial from Sony for the touchpads http://developer.sonymobile.com/wp/2011/02/13/xperia-play-touch-pad/

This is not a "fake minecraft" btw, this is a different game, that resembles Infiniminer and Minecraft in that there is a world made out of blocks. But honestly that is where the similarities end. You can tell by our mobs, tools and quests that we are not trying to copy Minecraft at all.

Everything except adding a sd card slot would have cost a little more. A card slot would have cost next to nothing to add. I always thought they left it out to push their cloud service.

I agree. I don't think it was left out for cost reasons. After all, the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a MicroSD slot either...yet there is a little plastic knockout plate that looks like that is where it would go if it did have one.

Hi All - My wife and I have decided to move forward and buy our kids (7 and 5) their own Nexus 7 for Christmas. I know people may say they are too young and will break them, but they have been very good caring for Dad's iPad and Mom's Kindle Fire. Playing the odds, I'm also getting a squaretrade warranty for each. Can you recommend:
1) Cases
2) Apps to restrict access
3) Apps for them to play
4) Accessories
Appreciate the help - Dan
I read the thread title and do you know what my immediate reaction was?
That sounds like a good swap

I would say a Bobjgear case... I have seen the gum drop cases. They add alot more bulk and weight. The gear case has the round bezel to protect the device. It also will make it easier for there small hands to grip without adding all the extra bulk.. As far as to protect the screen I removable part as suggest above i think would end up breaking the screen trying to put it on or off. Especially with the 5 year old...Just keep a nice plastic type screen protector on it.. No matter what there is no True total protection....
the games mentioned above is awesome...
The mulit user support has NO KID Protection built in .. You will have to use a app for that. Google failed by not putting user policy into the multi user function.. This would have been great. Maybe it will come...
I suggest you create a Google account specifically for the purpose of buying family shared apps. Load it on the tablet and don't attach a credit card to it. Whenever you want to buy apps on the account, add a credit card just long enough to make the purchases and then remove it. This way the kids can't make any accidental purchases (it's VERY easy to disable a Play Store PIN from the device!), but will still receive important app updates.

I did that for my kids - My 7 year old is about to get my old Eris to play with. His options for accidentally buying stuff is seriously limited when there is no credit card attached to the account. I bought a Play gift card to get the couple of needed apps (Titanium, so I could freeze apps like the dialer was the biggest need).
I also have their own profile on my Nexus 7, and I freeze/hide stuff there, too.
Also you can set a pin in the play store settings and then turn on the option to use pin for play store purchases. That helps lock the device out as well.

Only if you think of it as an honour system. Wipe Play Store data in Settings and the PIN is gone. I could have figured that out when I was 5, so I have a feeling these kids could too

My son is 6 and he has a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 I picked up used for $150 a few years ago. He loves it. He plays lots of games and watches Netflix and does educational games. I have a TPU case on it and a screen protector and its held up very well.
He loves World of Goo and Angry Birds and all kinds of the great little games Android has to offer. He seven loved the keyboard apps and wallpaper apps looking at different animals and places.
He takes his tab and DS everywhere. The tab is much more flexible when it comes to activities. Even with using a stylus to color and draw and practice writing, etc.
Recommended vs an Xbox or Wii.

You can get the Nabi number if you really need some drop protection.
My 6yr old loves my tablet...maybe gets minds and dads gets a new one, upgraded next month.
Some of her favorites have been mentioned: angry birds, cut the rope, Dragon fly and flying squirrel,
Sight words is great. Zoodles is nice but had limitations that annoy me.
Intellijoy had a series of fun learning games

Thanks so much everyone. This is extremely helpful.
Ever since i have owned this device it has ruined my experiences with my other gadgets. Now my computer both my tablets feel painfully slow. I cant take it. I want to just throw everything that isnt my nexus away. Sorry to rant about my spoiled problems but it kills. Even my note 10.1 feels slow .
Does anyone feel the same....this is a hard transition. I cry at night because of this. :crying: :crying: :crying:
Hahaha lol

Although my Nexus 4 hasn't shipped yet, you tell a very convincing and woeful tale. Whatever gadgets you want to throw away, you may do so in my direction. Just one rule though no direct head hits, and keep them above the belt.
Merry Christmas and enjoy the Nexus 4.

I agree. This thing is a wicked beast. But not a fan of chrome. I miss the AOSP browser. I'm not rooting for a while so I guess I've just got to deal with chrome. A shame boat doesn't work on 4.2+, that was my standard.
cool story bro...send the computer and tablets to me ...
same here... I got an Acer iconia a200 tab a couple weeks ago but the only thing I use it for is to occasionally watch Netflix. its painfully slow compared to my n4

humm... weird, running an older macbook pro with Ableton live and photoshop to do actual work and rendering things and all the things a advanced computer system does and it makes my Nexus 4 feel like a good place to check my texts and maybe struggle to use a regular website on the road.
I really dont need a tablet, to me it is like a frustrating computer screen that can't run the millions of computer programs that pros need on mac or pc, and without being able to have full control.
My Nexus is significantly more responsive than my dual core notebook with windows 8. I think its time for me to get a quad notebook as well.

I dont' get it , I have an older macbook pro, with a 5400 HD even, I don't wait even a second more for anything that I should.
This phone on the other hand, I couldn't even go threw crome to Google mail regular view and click the spam folder properly, or I can't even sign out of the desk top version of facebook on the phone.
The phone has wasted more seconds of my life in the last week waiting for it to do things than a real dual core computer has in years.
Do you mean when you click an app it opens quickly ? Thats cool, but overall a phone on android is just a phone compared to a laptop.
I couldn't make a living without a laptop, I couldn't DJ, I couldn't make graphics or websites, I couldn't have video and audio rendered, I have 8 gigs memory in my macbook and I can have ten huge programs open at the same time without a hicup...
You know what I mean.
The day we are looking at a projected image of android on teh wall and using a keyboard is the day we will all prob go by a windows or iphone and notice that nobody is ever going to make ableton live or even photoshop work on android, not the full version, not Final Cut Pro, not even a full version of anything that people need.
Get an i7 and GTX 680. Enjoy!

You know major manufacturers are working on a new bios now. It probably take you around 10 - 15 seconds to boot up your Laptop (If it's using an SSD). Soon 3 seconds will be the norm. Give it about five more years
I like my mac lol...haters gonnna hate
