Nexus 7 for 7 & 5 year old - Nexus 7 General

Hi All - My wife and I have decided to move forward and buy our kids (7 and 5) their own Nexus 7 for Christmas. I know people may say they are too young and will break them, but they have been very good caring for Dad's iPad and Mom's Kindle Fire. Playing the odds, I'm also getting a squaretrade warranty for each. Can you recommend:
1) Cases
2) Apps to restrict access
3) Apps for them to play
4) Accessories
Appreciate the help - Dan

I read the thread title and do you know what my immediate reaction was?
That sounds like a good swap

Great idea starting them early. I'd recommend Seidio active case with front cover. Gumdrop offers a little more protection just no front cover, which may not matter too much. They have jellybean 4.2 which has multiple users and child restriction. Apps can't help you there, sorry..

I would say a Bobjgear case... I have seen the gum drop cases. They add alot more bulk and weight. The gear case has the round bezel to protect the device. It also will make it easier for there small hands to grip without adding all the extra bulk.. As far as to protect the screen I removable part as suggest above i think would end up breaking the screen trying to put it on or off. Especially with the 5 year old...Just keep a nice plastic type screen protector on it.. No matter what there is no True total protection....
the games mentioned above is awesome...
The mulit user support has NO KID Protection built in .. You will have to use a app for that. Google failed by not putting user policy into the multi user function.. This would have been great. Maybe it will come...

I suggest you create a Google account specifically for the purpose of buying family shared apps. Load it on the tablet and don't attach a credit card to it. Whenever you want to buy apps on the account, add a credit card just long enough to make the purchases and then remove it. This way the kids can't make any accidental purchases (it's VERY easy to disable a Play Store PIN from the device!), but will still receive important app updates.

I did that for my kids - My 7 year old is about to get my old Eris to play with. His options for accidentally buying stuff is seriously limited when there is no credit card attached to the account. I bought a Play gift card to get the couple of needed apps (Titanium, so I could freeze apps like the dialer was the biggest need).
I also have their own profile on my Nexus 7, and I freeze/hide stuff there, too.

Also you can set a pin in the play store settings and then turn on the option to use pin for play store purchases. That helps lock the device out as well.

Only if you think of it as an honour system. Wipe Play Store data in Settings and the PIN is gone. I could have figured that out when I was 5, so I have a feeling these kids could too

My son is 6 and he has a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 I picked up used for $150 a few years ago. He loves it. He plays lots of games and watches Netflix and does educational games. I have a TPU case on it and a screen protector and its held up very well.
He loves World of Goo and Angry Birds and all kinds of the great little games Android has to offer. He seven loved the keyboard apps and wallpaper apps looking at different animals and places.
He takes his tab and DS everywhere. The tab is much more flexible when it comes to activities. Even with using a stylus to color and draw and practice writing, etc.
Recommended vs an Xbox or Wii.

You can get the Nabi number if you really need some drop protection.
My 6yr old loves my tablet...maybe gets minds and dads gets a new one, upgraded next month.
Some of her favorites have been mentioned: angry birds, cut the rope, Dragon fly and flying squirrel,
Sight words is great. Zoodles is nice but had limitations that annoy me.
Intellijoy had a series of fun learning games

This is a graphics rich, fairly immersive RPG/space flight sim (I've only played it for a little bit, so I don't know how far the gameplay goes). It's a THD, or Tegra Zone, game, and it's free for any device with a Tegra 2.
The controls can be a little wonky until you get used to them, but I think some fiddling with the setting/experience at the helm will fix that right up (wish it used a Wiimote classic, though). Gameplay is fun and not too redundant (so far), progression is pretty straightforward with freeplay quests on the side of the storyline, and it's freaking gorgeous on the Streak 7.
Did I mention free? If you haven't downloaded this yet, do yourself a favour and get on it. It's a great toilet surfer, if you know what I mean.
The only downside I've encountered thus far is that it's locked up on me twice, requiring a hard-reboot (that and the first time I tried to download it it crapped out halfway, but that could have been my T-Mo signal). It's probably fairly RAM intensive; I'm going to try killing apps before I run it, next time (something I usually avoid like the plague on FroYo+ OS). I've only run it on the stock ROM, so no idea if this plays well with StreakDroid or HoneyStreak. I also have yet to hook this up with the HDMI dock, but I'm looking forward to doing so.
This game, more than any I've yet tried, really showcases the awesome of the Streak 7. I was playing it in the hospital yesterday (friend having a baby), and the family there are all Apple people; iPhones, iPads, etc. They were all asking what the Streak 7 was (I had to find a polite way to say, "it's like an iPad, only better in just about every meaningful way").
**UPDATE**
I didn't realise this at the time that I wrote this, but the game is not free. It's free for a limited amount of gameplay, but then it costs to purchase the whole game. It's pretty awesome, though, graphically; so it might just be worth it for you. I haven't decided if I'll purchase or not because the darned thing keeps locking up on startup (requires a hard restart for the Streak).
Downloaded it and played it for about an hour up to the point that it said I have to purchase the full version to keep playing. Full version cost $15.
Did not buy it.
Other that that the game played amazing. Great graphics and video and audio stayed synced up the entire time. No freezes or reboots for me. Just doesnt seem worth 15 bucks to me. I would probably do about 6 or 7 dollars max for this game.
That was my .02.

OpenTTD is great but I use the files from my real TTD.
As for this game, playing it, works very well. I like it. Tho for "drilling" seems the on screen analog stick works better then the tilt controls, for combat tilt works better.
wow, I am willing to spend 5-7 bucks like I did on the xbox live games on my hd7, but no chance I'm spending 15 on any mobile game where a hard reset might mean me having to start the whole thing over. Maybe it will go onsale at some point.
Ok what I am reading from the official website, Galaxy on fire 2 is free, but what you can pay 5$ for is the Valkyrie DLC addon, which adds new story, abilities etc.
Galaxy On Fire is free till you get to the second level, then it tells you you have to purchase the game to go any further.
Yea which sucks.. 15$.. =/
But I do wonder, does the Android version not have the Valkyrie dlc?

If u want to be dominated by Big Brother, then get the iphonie...
i will make this simple for you... if you dont know much about computers or electronics, and dont care to. get an iphone. if are a huge techy guy, and plan on being a power user of your phone (somebody who treats it more like a computer and not a phone) then do yourself a favor and get a high end android phone - top of the line, cutting edge.
iphones are bland, for soccer moms, and people who love having AMAZING hardware, with no in depth user functionality.
IF YOU LIKE PLAYING ANGRY BIRDS... AND TEXTING... AND CHECKING EMAILS...AND THAT'S IT........ get an iphone.
if you are a boring, sad individual, who loves a socialist society and socialist phones and socialist phone carriers who force their socialism by saying "use this, it looks like this, just like everybody else" then get an iphone.
if you like iphones, maybe you can have xibit pimp your ride...

With all the joking in this thread I think I should step in and be the serious one. I would not buy either phone for the next two weeks. The iPhone 5 announcement and also a Samnsung event with google are both scheduled for the next two weeks and if at all possible I would wait for these events. The Nexus Prime and the iPhone 5 will be cutting edge when they are released.

It makes a lot of since to have have both apple or both android. You can use your purchased apps on both devices from the same company. But you can't use your ios apps on your android and your android apps on ios. You would have to buy them all over again.

And why is that high of screen resolution needed on a 10" screen?
Just like the rest of the iDrones, ooh look it is shiny, look at the pretty colors and lights, and I only have to sign my bank account, soul, and first born child over to crapple? Sign me up! Morons!
Give crapple 500+ dollars,
Get higher screen res than is actually needed,
Tablet overheats and shuts down,
Firmware fix will just slow down CPU reducing performance,
Pay crapple hundreds more dollars for apps that aren't actually worth it,
PRICELESS!

Just finished watching the Playstation Gamescom conference and when they got around to the Playstation Mobile segment I was pleasantly surprised to find that Sony has partnered with Asus to bring Playstation Mobile to Asus devices. Though with the Nexus 7 being the official Google tablet it only makes sense really. I look forward to playing Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Driver, Syphon Filter and MediEvil on my Nexus 7 in the future
It was also said that if you buy something on one device it will be available to ALL your PS certified devices, for anyone out there who has a Sony phone or a PS Vita or for some reason, one of those unfortunately horrible looking Sony tablets ><
Haha sounds awesome. Do you have a link where we could read more?
I wonder if it will apply to the Nexus 7 though. It's really a Google device manufactured by ASUS.

The game would be likely optimized for our devices. I don't think tegra3 optimized, but updated for newer more powerful processors. So the same game should run better natively than on emulator. But FPse emulator with open gl plugin looks great.
Looking forward to this partnership. Almost positive this includes nexus 7 also. Since its made by Asus. Being partnered with Google doesn't negate that.

Don't get too excited...

And it is still under "beta" stage... sort of......
And it is mostly 1st generation games... or possibly up to "some" PS2 games down the line... although, some original "titles" for PS Mobile could be interesting...
But if you are looking for PSX games... I think you will be better off with FPSE emulator.

Lets hope you don't have an Xbox, as their security breach was much bigger, cost alot of people REAL money, and Microsoft have just been keeping quiet about the problem.

At least Sony were honest and upfront about it, yet the press still raped them over it. Nobody ever lost any money or details on the PSN hack, it all turned out to be blown out of all proportion. There was no CC fraud, Sony never stored CC numbers, and no rise in identity fraud was ever seen as a result of it.
( we all know the hidden agenda - American press pushing the American console).

Thank goodness I don't store my CC on Xbox as well. Security breaches happens all the time, thats not the point of this thread. I was just stating that I have not tried any of the games yet because I don't have one on file. I do see that PSN has redeem vouchers like Xbox, so I might get one so I could get some games.

Getting a Nexus 7 for Christmas

So I'm getting a Nexus 7 for Christmas and I want to start planning ahead like what I'm going to do with it. I know it may be early but when it's close to Christmas time, I feel like a little kid again, well I'm still a kid at 17.
So I'll either be getting a 16GB or 32GB which is fine as I'll be using that OTG Adapter technique with my 32GB USB stick, which I think is pretty damn nice.
I was thinking of getting this case:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
It looks nice, has a stand, it's cheap & I like it.
I'd like to ask some questions.
- What toolkit should I use to root it & that?
- Should I get a stylus?
- Is it easy flashing kernels & ROM's to it?
- What apps and games can you recommend?
Thanks in advance!

Most people will say not to use toolkits and usb adb instead. Personally, i couldnt get adb working so used Wugfresh's toolkit and it worked fine. Has saved my tablet a few times too

I got a stylus, but its only one of those ones with a thick rubber end. I only use it for Sketchbook app.

Yes. Once you root, install a custom recovery (Clockworkmod or TWRP), i prefer TWRP, and from then on all ROM's are flashed through the recovery. Literally a few clicks.

Tool kits are meant to make life easier. Load the app, automatically unlocks, roots, and flashes CWM. Done.
I like the poetic flip case. Really helps protect it. Its $20 but nice. I also prefer the SGP Crystal Clear matte SP which is about $20 also.
I had both of those on my stolen N7 and will be buying again.

Indeed, but you learn little about the actual process itself, and may end up being attached to it and not wanting to learn about the process Then when you want to get into advanced flashing, or a major issue occurs, you'll most likely not know what to do.
In any case, toolkits might be nice for the very first time, but it is advised to not rely on them in the long run.

Check out this case, I have it and it works well under than the occasional dust getting caught.

This is completely irrelevant but why do you consider yourself a kid at 17?

'cause 17 year olds are still kids
