Overclocking - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know that I can search the forum and find the way to overclock my phone ... but since I want to be 101% sure ... I will ask here ... if it's not a problem
So I have GingerDX v029, stock, bootloader LOCKED
I want to overclock my phone a little bit ... just so I don't have those annoying freezes and lag ...
So do I need to unlock my bootloader to overclock my phone and what is the easiest and safest way to make it faster (overclock it)
S.E XPERIA X8
ROOTED
GINGER DXv029 ROM
ANDROID 2.3.7
STOCK KERNEL
LOCKED BOOTLAODER
OVERCLOCKED (CPU 600MIN-691MAX)
SANDISK 16GB

Red line is kinda what I need

1. No you don't need an unlocked bootloader
2. The easiest way is to use SetCPU or find the overclocking sub-menu on cyanogenmod settings. It'll work only if the x8oc.ko (or some similar overclocking module for the X8) is installed.

You don't have to unlock the BL to overclock your phone. dx made a OC module long time before BL unlocking was possible.

Yea in performance menu in cyanogenmod settings I have Min and Max value for cpu speed ... but It is "grey" so I can't click on it .. can you please explain to me what should I do ... thank's for reply btw

I'm not on GB (but fifo171 is) but if I remember correct you have to enable it first. It should be there.

I won't lie... I have no idea what are you talking about ... How can I enable it ... there is no option in settings to enable overclocking

First you have to install OC module. (AFAIK it isn't included in GingerDX and it's addons).
You can get all the info here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020313
Then you should be able to set frequencies to higher values.

I did everything but now I have my phone overclocked to 122-691 and I can't change those values ... but since those are the numbers I actually wanted ... it's cool ... but can you explain to me something more about GOVERNERS ... mine is currently "ONDEMAND" ... I saw on forum that "smartass" governer is better but my battery is gone in 10 hours when I use "smartass" governer...
edit: maybe a minute passed ... my MAX CPU FREQUENCY is back to 600 and I can't change it ?

You can overclock it with locked bootlaoder

Have you done everything right? Copying the module to /system/lib/modules, setting permissions, adding the line to hw_config.sh (if it wasn't already there), rebooting?

where should I set permissions .. doesn't say anything about permissions in tutorial you gave me

Go to /system/lib/modules, long press on x8oc.ko -> permissions -> set it like this:

edit2: it works when I do it with SETCPU ... I change the value on setcpu and when I checked in cynogenmod settings it was changed there too ...
tnx I've set it 122-729

I'm happy to hear that
BTW don't set the frequency @boot until you're sure it's safe for your phone.

i have the same problem ,. i successfully overclocked mine(691 max) too but 10 mins passed... mx cpu back to 600,.i tried using SetCPU app but it gives me an error saying ,."can't find cpu blah blah config,.are you sure you unmouted your sd card blah blah?"

After every reboot, you need to insmod the module again unless you wrote that line in the hw_config.sh.

[experimental] Overclock kernel (2.6.29) and how to

This is an experimental attempt.
The system might be made unstable, and the device be damaged.
Therefore, I do not recommend this to be used daily.

Last week, I found a hint of overclocking.

And at last, I succeeded to do it.
To say the conclusion at first, it works fine around 730MHz while a week.
At 768MHz and more over, it causes hunging up the system frequently.
Over 800MHz? I couldn't in this time. I think it needs VDD control and managing the freq tables more better to do it.
To get resources for overclocking, please refer the second post.

The update for CM6RC2 on Legend: here to download. (build26, zipped)
FIXED: PERFLOCK disabled
Only the 'kernel' module for test other ROMs: here to download. (build26, not archived)
FIXED: PERFLOCK disabled
How to do it for kernel_legend_13be9c9c:
At first, you should read zanfur's post and his patch.
I just modified two tables in acpuclock-arm11.c excluding his having written.
1. modify cpufreq.c to let SetCPU to access freq tables
2. modify acpuclock-arm11.c to let HTC Legend be able to overclocking
3. modify msm7227_defconfig to disable PERFLOCK [optional]
You might not need modify defconfig when you use SetCPU which can purchase in Android Market.
SetCPU can disable PERFLOCK by setting. ([menu] -> [Perflock Disabler])
(acpuclock-arm11.c which I use is here)
FIXED: updated the correct file
Congratulations!
I will test soon
build26
My first kernel (build25) was built with CONFIG_PERFLOCK=y.
SetCPU can disable PERFLOCK.
However, I noticed there were few users of SetCPU now.
So I built it for HTC Legend users who do not have SetCPU.
Thanks,
Thanks to you, Kyosa, you make better this community with your work.

Edit, fixed it. I just flashed the One i talkd about and it Works perfect
OMG...940!!!!! I'm still on Eclair Rom with Sense and Quadrant gives me only 378 pts ....so far from your result!
Just a question: does your kernel module work with Eclair too ?
what do i wrong:
i follow all the step's but when i flash the patch my phone doesnt do anything.
it keep showing the HTC logo on a white screen.
if i flash the normal cm66 my phone works great again.

Working fine here with build 66

ahh... It seems too immature to release.
give me a time to solve the problem on booting up.
I apologize that it is no use.

1. flash CM6RC2-build66 (with ClockWorks Recovery)
2. flash this kernel (build26) WITHOUT WIPE (with ClockWorks Recovery)
3. run SetCPU or other overclock tools

Strange that it works for some people with build 66 and not for some people with the same build, hope you manage to solve that, have been waiting for this for some time now

I have the same problem when trying to flash on cm6...
To the people who have managed to flash it succesfully, is the cpu overclocked as soon as you boot, or do you have to change it in setCpu?
If so, maybe the problem as to why it works for some people and not others is that some cpu's cannot take the stress of the overclock and others can?

Works right out of the box for me with kyosas cm6.
Question: I am not really interested in overclocking, speed is fine as it is. But will this kernel make it possible to save battery by underclocking? Does the original kernel lower cpu speed e.g. at screen off? Or do I need this kernel and SetCPU profiles to lower cpu frequency?

NOTE: Me are not responsible any problems caused by installed kernels.
So, Do it at your own Risk..!
For flashing this kernel is need the root access, because it will use SetCPU or similiar tool for managing the frequency.
Step:
1. Download the needed file --> TASS_OC.7z
2. Extract TASS_OC.7z
3. Run S5570_Odin Multi Downloader v4.38.exe
4. Click OPS button and choose TASS_v1.0.ops
5. Clink PDA buton and choose CODE_S5570DXKA8_REV02_OC.tar.md5
6. Power up Phone to Download Mode (Center key + Vol Down key + Power key)
7. After Odin detected the Phone, Click Start button
8. Wait for flashing process is finnished, and install SetCPU or similliar tool.
After that, you can configure the frequency...
For back to stock kernel, the step is same as above. but you choose the CODE_S5570DXKA8_REV02.tar.md5 for PDA.
Note: If the phone is hang or reboot, choose the lower frequency until you find the stable frequency.
I can play AngryBird RIO very smooth on 825MHZ with Performance for Scaling profile..
Just press Thanks button if you like my compiled kernel..
Cool! Finally, we have one Thank you!
Besides OC, what are/is the difference of this ROM from the stock?
Does it still use Samsung file system (rfs) or ext2/4?
Great. But how about the battery usage?
Post it to kaskus lil'G Forum.

2. PRADA ROM series and
3. SAPPHIRE ROM series.
good work. however, i cannot comment yet on battery consumption and heat.
gotta use it a bit more for these and any related instability.
thanks.
This kernel based on Gingerbread Official kernel or CM7 kernel?

ok i install this kernel on zeus 6.3n. i know, that was madness.

test in Quadrant in 5 round per row show only max 1056 points.

I/O scheduler: sio
check the CPU SPY screen shot.
the cell mainly stays on the minimum scaling when not used, which is very essential for the battery.
overall, the performance is snappier than stock (obvious thing)

yes it has.
How's Smartreflex and MPU? You can check via dmesg. If something shows "hub_opp_init: MPU does not support XXXX MHz" then you have a problem. frequencies may show but there would be complications on voltages.
The slowness is via DVFS IMO. better use init.d, "scaling_max_freq" for OC.

haven't tried gdx 30 YET. but i've experienced the wake up bug on some jb roms. now the problem may have different causes, but have you guys tried staying on ondemand governor? or setting a higher min frequency on cpu? like i said, it's probably not going to work, but it's worth a try.
[cAs]
People having this problem can try the next flashable zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1667297&d=1358875962 .
As I've explained before in the GingerDX thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37044702&postcount=12246 ), at least in stock kernel, the PERFORMANCE governor is the default and it is reverted back as the default after each reboot, you can change it in the Performance menu but it will not pick up the values set in hw_config.sh.
For those of you who are with a custom kernel, you can check this by going to the Performance menu and entering CPU Settings. If PERFORMANCE is selected as the governor and you haven't touched this, it means that the custom kernel version has the same problem as the stock one.
Why does this matter? This might have something to do with the phone not being able to come out of deep sleep. So you can try the flashable zip. It basically guarantees that ONDEMAND is selected as the default governor with the values that have been working for our phone.

The X8 here never had that problem and it's running with the script that's inside the flashable zip. So, as I said, it might solve the issue.
What I can guarantee is that, at least for stock kernel, the intended governor with its intended values will be loaded. That's not the case with the latest release of GingerDX. The values are there, but they're not loaded correctly.
I had deep sleep only when screen was off and I pluged in charger. Gdx v30 + alfs 9c
What cpu gouvernor are you using ?

I tried settind the governor on ondemand & checked 'set on Boot' in cyanogen mod settings & after reboot it wasn't reset to performance
It was still ondemand

I made no change performance in CyanogenMod settings, did not check what was the governator and native frequency, but I am back to gingerzaraki in this i never had this problem =D I did proper installation on v030: full wipe, rom (the same kernel v09c), libsensors and gapps

As I've explained in the GingerDX thread, you can do that but the values for the governor won't be loaded. What values? These:
Code:
echo 80 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/up_threshold
echo 40 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/down_differential
echo 400000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/ondemand/sampling_rate
echo 122880 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq
They're present in the hw_config.sh and are expected to be loaded at boot, as ONDEMAND is. They don't. They slightly modify how the governor behaves for our phone.
Having said that, just changing ONDEMAND as the governor via CyanogenMod Settings might do the trick.

[KERNEL] CM11 OC KERNEL (Thor)

Hi,
Here is an OC kernel for you to try. The max cpu frequency is overclocked to 2.35 Ghz instead of 2.15 Ghz. The stability is not well tested but i could play 20 minutes of Asphalt 8. Note that benchmarks does not seems to profit a lot from this overclock, i guess the thermal engine is always optimizing speeds no matter what. That's said i can say that for general use i can feel a little difference.
To be flashed via TWRP recovery (this is for 7" hdx, thor)
Changelog
=========
- v2 : actually include the oc kernel
Awesome! I'm gonna try it and report back
Awesome!
You should consider adding more CPU governors too.
I flashed it, but should I see the change in the tweaking apps? No Frills CPU Control and Trickster Mod still report 2.15.

Same here I don't see any change in trickster mod or performance for CPU freq's.

Where are the CM CPU Settings? I looked under "About this Tablet" and other areas within the settings, but can't find anything that reports on the CPU speed. I do show this as the kernel, 3.4.0-perf-g625444.
My flashable zip must be broken :x

Yeah checked there as well in settings > performance and CPU does not show OC.

Don't bother, i packed the wrong boot.img (stock one), so stupid Uploading the correct one, OC to 2.35 Ghz as it seems stable (at least on my device).
Edit: uploaded

No...
Using Apollo and jealous with Thor user....
So far everything seems stable. I do see a slight, but noticeable improvement in performance. I got over 42000 in antutu with this kernel. Thanks @Cpasjuste

Too bad I am in Vietnam...
I hate to be that person all the time but I just received 31,000 in my antutu. How is that possible. I flashed the OC kernel. Set governor to performance. It went to 2342mhz.
Ran it and got that tiny score... How did the other member gave 40,000????
