I am seriously contemplating the LG Optimus Vs the Nexus 4, I am very sure I will end up with one of them (AT&T). As time went on, I was noticing just how very different these phones are, even though they are all the same phone (sorta).
I am a regular XDA lurker, by no means am I a Android expert, and I expect errors to be in the chart above, point them out, and I will fix them. The chart is only meant to point out the differences, and not all the specs of the entire phone, and some basic specs all of them share.
My Questions to XDA:
If I get a LG Optiums from AT&T:
1) How hard will it be to get stock Android tethering working? (I have followed guides on how to enable tehtering on my familys phones in the past, it was a pain, but I managed.)
2) Could I even get Google wallet working on a LG Optimus, further more working if I load a custom rom?
Basically; I want to get a LG Optimus from AT&T and Hack/Root/Skin the phone to make it look/feel as close to a Pure Google Nexus device.... How possible is this? Is all this worth me trying to get a LTE phone?
Things I am Personally Considering:
* I like being out of contract, but I really want LTE (although my area does not yet even have LTE)
* I prefer the capacitive buttons over soft buttons, it makes the 4.7" screen feel all that much bigger.
* I use google wallet almost every day, I love it (I would loose this on the LG Optimus, unless I "unofficially get it working" I don't even know if that is possible or not.)
* I love the notification light on my G Nex
* I love the Gnex because its "Googles Playground" I get the latest OS always.
* I love Google Now, I would likely be installing a custom rom on the LG optimus if I got it to get Google Now back ASAP.
* Tethering will be supported stock on the Nexus 4, the Lg optimus will require some effort to get native Android tethering working.
* Price / Storage does not bug me in the least, I set aside $400 for this phone
* My iPhones and Gnex have never had a SD slot, Im in no hurry to have one now...
* I like the the slightly thinner AT&T optimus, and the way it looks.
1)If LG decides to unlock the bootloader. It won't be long after an AOSP/CM10 Rom comes out.
2) Yes, it's possible, it's been done on the VZW SGSIII.
Honestly, I'd say go for the N4 instead of the OG. Dev community will be more active, you don't have to tinker with unlocking the bootloader of the device, custom Android skins, and there's some other marks the OG misses out on like LED notification light. If you don't want AT&T 21mbps HSPA then go for TMO/Straighttalk prepaid and you'll get 42mbps HSPA+, it is very fast and the next best thing to LTE. No one even knows if LG will unlock the bootloader of the OG, they didn't unlock it for their 4X HD. Also, you will be the first one to get Android Updates.
Well, I think I am going to stick to the Nexus line. After watching some videos on the Nexus 4, it just seems like a superior product.
I like the freedom of no contract, and the option to swap from AT&T to Tmobile at will or any MVNO.
My area does not have LTE, so HSPA + 42 DC would be the fastest service available to me in the 2013-2014 time period (I expect LTE to mature in my area by then.) (My town was listed in an official Tmo press list for HSPA 42, so thats verified.)
My new questions:
1) Does straight talk support Tmobile HSPA+ 42 DC?
2) Does straight talk support unconditional call forwarding? (For google voice, if not how do I get around this to fully use google voice.)
Thanks!
(Trust me I tried googling, nowhere does it make it clear if Straight talk is HSPA+ 42 DC capable or not. Could not find many results. And most people talk about porting their number into google voice, which I will do If I must, but would rather put my current number directly on my phone.)
I am pretty darn sure that the LG Optimus G has an LED Notification light (around the power button) correct me if I am wrong.

I think LG confirmed lock bootloaders for the AT&T version (at least), which is what soured the deal on that for me. I had the same thought - that ports would be very quick for the OpG since the N4 has such similar hardware, but the locked bootloader kills it.
BOTH LG OG's have notification lights... Sprint is on the front near the top and AT&T's is, as someone pointed out, around the power/wake button.
I think you are missing the 2100 band.
3G (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz)
HSPA+ 42Mbps

I've been batting the same idea around for days, (N4 or AT&T LGOG) this chart and thread was pretty handy. I was considering the International version of the LGOG as well.
Thank you OP.

I don't see a reason to go for the International LGOG over the N4. The US LGOG variants have LTE and the ATT version has a MicroSD card, which are important to some people, but otherwise...not so sure. Unless you just like the way it looks.

This is pretty much what I arrived at. Other than the 13mp camera, no real reason for the international version. And from what I've seen on the camera comparisons, I could care less about the 13mp cam. My area doesn't have LTE, so I don't care about that. Only disappointment for me is no SD storage. But it's not a deal breaker. And the LED on the AT&T's model around the power button looks horrible.
Also I've been on the $10 unlimited data plan with international phones for awhile now.

In response to kotaro, no google wallet on at&t. They are developing their own version of it.

One thing to consider is software support. I have the lg g2x and the hardware is fine but they suck at support and I will never buy another lg phone. However the nexus is supported by Google so you will get updates. I mean it has been almost a year since ICS came out and lg will not support my phone even though it has a tegra 2 in it.

since the phones are so similar we should be able to get a hacked AOSP version on the phone as soon as Google releases it. Then of course we will have AOKP/CM and although they do amazing work i prefer the pure Google experience mainly because AOKP/CM are always months behind google. I mean we still don't have a stable CM10 for any phones.
Using AOKP on my S3 and it's my daily but it has its bugs. I hope since the hardware is so similar we will be able to port the Nexus ROMS to the Optimus G rather easily.

Be wary of this - it will have a locked bootloader. They may offer unlocking options, but I doubt it, and new roms may be flash able over top the original kernel, but it won't be completely open.

Guys I have a choice between the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Note II. both at the same price point (or cheaper with my upgrade discount) I need some help choosing a phone. I don't know what to go with. The GNII will come with 16GB + SD Card, LTE & a sweet stylus (which I am not sure if I will use, maybe on rare occasions). Does anyone know if the AT&T GNII bootloader will come unlocked? How about developer attention. I have less than three weeks to decide. I was really leaning towards the AT&T LG Otimus G but was contacted by LG and told that the boot loader will indeed be locked + LG has some bad reputation for little to no support or customer service so with that the LG O-G will not be seeing JellyBean at all. Thanks for the input.

There is an entire thread on this here.....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962438
I'm on a family plan so a non-contract phone costing more is really a sour deal for me.
Aside from that, I really prefer to not be locked into 16gb for years.
getting the Optimus G to have an unlocked bootloader is basically the best possible situation for me.
If the Optimus G doesn't get an unlocked bootloader, I don't really have any decent options on At&t.

I'm new to the Nexus 4. I'm coming from the ATT LG Optimus G which I know is pretty much the same phone. But just wasn't for me. I couldn't get LTE at all with that phone no matter what I did. Apn's, build.prop, radio's, hidden menus, nothing gave me LTE. Development was a little lacky since only a few roms are active. A friend of mine told me to just get a Nexus 4, root it, unlock the bootloader, flash a good rom, flash a .33 radio, change the icon on the to get the 4G LTE and you will get LTE since it has AWS. I had an horrible experience converting the LGOG to Nexus 4. I had so much freaking bugs here and there and lost 50 percent performance of the phone. It was a nightmare.
One downside I did notice about the Nexus 4 that both LGOG and Nexus 4 share the same sizescreen, but the Nexus 4 has on screen soft keys and LGOG has dedicated soft buttons which makes the LGOG a plus one on the screen side since it has more room and the screen looks bigger for some apparent reason.
So what do you think guys? Did I make the right choice? I think I did
I think you did.
Why does it matter?
Enjoy the endless options of optimization that the n4 offers you!
To me, yes. For me it's nexus > everything else.
If you wanna take back the soft key part, flash PA and use PIE.
I sold the nexus 4 last night and I bought myself a HTC one.. .... Jk yeah right I fell in love with this phone after unlocking/rooting/flashed my first ROM last night and there are endless ROMs I don't know what to do. Its like a buffet

does tmobile have lte up in your area? if it doesnt, there nothing you can do thatll give you lte.
I don't believe the nexus 4 has a lte chip in it anyways. So even if T-Mobile had lte don't think it picks it up due to the fact the phone has to have a lte chip to connect. I'm pretty sure Google didn't put one in ....unless its there jus not activated. But I don't think so.

In terms of LTE support on ATT, you might you might not get it depending on the coverage area band/s ATT LTE runs in your area. N4 only has AWS 4 band LTE, so if ATT doesn't have that in your area, you can switch to Tmo which does support AWS 4. Check out the ALL LTE & Tmo threads to find out more.

Be sure to reflash the entire stock ROM via fast boot alone (then flash whatever ROM you want). I got an extra 1.5 hours screen on time doing that. No idea why...just a suggestion if you're struggling to get 3 hours screen on time daily (like I was). I now average 4 hours screen on time daily.
I keep going back and forth whether to buy it or not. I have an HTC amaze with cm 10.1 on it. It reboots itself sometimes. But it has a micro SD which doesn't have anything on it. All my apps videos and pictures saved to internal with about 2 GB left I think.
Nexus 4 has lte. Not sure if I get it or just wait out the amaze which battery dies in 5 hours and wait for nexus 5. Or get the nexus 4 and sell the amaze now

I'm with T-Mobile,but Ive been always a fan on AT&T Phones since they always have better mid level phones than T-Mobile. I use to have the ATT Motorola Atrix HD unlocked. I slap my sim card on that and didn't even have to change any APN settings. Immediately picked up LTE. And to answer your question. Yes we have LTE in Phoenix, AZ.

I've been on that thread. I was directed to that thread on the ATT LGOG section. We have LTE in Phoenix,AZ. I should have stated that the phone was unlocked for any sim and me being a T-Mobile customer and all.
Either way for now T-Mobile is kicking ATT's butt in LTE coverage and speeds, but I also heard that ATT are investing over a billion not millions, but billions of dollars into towers and boosting up their LTE speeds.
Not that LTE really matters, but just a nice feature to have and LGOG was not supporting T-Mobile LTE's bands.
Here is a screenshot of my LTE on my Nexus. " Note that the 4G is really LTE on the Nexus 4" I changed the icon and used the LTE settings from the market. Shows that I have LTE on the network type.

Sell the Amaze and get the Nexus 4 and call it a day. Nexus 4 are cheap if you score one on Craigslist. I bought mine for 250 dollars semi new 16gb unlocked already from Craigslist. oh cool. then you need either the .33 radio or .27. also, theres a build.prop edit you need and an edit for sound during calls(ill link a flashable), and you need to change the phone/radio to lte/gsm.
flash this, it should take care of the build.peop edit and in call sound https://www.box.com/s/h16b3wlrq8op6us7ifsv
Beat you to it already with the .33 radio as you can see on the previous posts that I posted a screenshot of my lte. But the in call sound I shall do but so far I am not experiencing any bugs with the in calls on the .33 radio.
.27 radio doesn't lock so well on the GPS as the .33 does. Wish the .48 had lte and also wish that developers can play with radios but its illegal to even hack radios to begin with.
Now my next issue is. I remember seeing a site or thread somewhere on how to make lte stick even on after booting. I keep having keep changing the prefer network as it sticks to wcdma every boot.

I'm glad you got it working under T-Mobile LTE.
Just saw Sprint added "Spark" coverage in Austin. http://newsroom.sprint.com/news-rel...up-to-60-mbps-now-available-in-11-markets.htm
Has anyone here connected to it?
I've enabled my Nexus 5 as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2530061.
Haven't seen any difference at all. Anyone know how to tell if you are connected?
The coverage map looks pretty damn good in Austin for Spark. http://coverage.sprint.com/IMPACT.jsp?ECID=vanity:coverage
I've been waiting almost 4 years for Sprint 4G. First it was WiMax, then LTE and now SPARC. I'm still stuck in the dark ages with 200 kbs downloads. Maybe by the time I get something better, you guys will be on 6G or 7G technology......but I'm not bitter. :/
also in austin and have tried every combination of band/priority and no difference.
hopefully soon as sprint speeds here are simply a joke

+1 for this. I live in a metro area of about a quarter million people (not huge, but not tiny either), and we most likely won't have Sprint LTE until 2018 because our service is provided by an affiliate that owns the infrastructure and is in no hurry to spend any cash to update their backhaul. Spark would be awesome, but usable 3g would also be nice. My account has 5 lines with different contract expiration dates, so switching to another carrier would be way too expensive to even consider right now (unless T-Mobile had decent coverage here, but that's another discussion entirely).

Wow, same exact situation here. I live in a bustling college town with an area population of about 150,000. Sprint service is provided by a janky little network called nTelos and there is no way of knowing when they will ever step into this century. My little company only has 3 lines, but we face the same dilemma. I went so far as to grab a prepaid Tmobile SIM to experiment with, but it was 1X everywhere I tried. I didn't think it was possible to have worse service than Sprint, but TMobile (at least in this area) is pitiful compared to Sprint.
Update Needed
Just an FYI the Nexus 5 needs an update to make use of spark. Even with all the bands enabled it will only connect to band 25.

Google will release a n5 firmware update this quarter we have been told, you have no control over this.
In the past it seemed Sprint's objective was to be bought out by another carrier so they tried to expand in under served areas. Now there's rumors of Sprint's new owners wanting to buy out T-mobile.
I connected to band 41 on my nexus for about an hour once then I mucked with the settings and never got it back.

That will NEVER happen.
I'm in the Detroit metro with unofficial LTE. I got LTE on my gnex most everywhere. Different story on this device with the tri band. I can force LTE, but then I can't get texts or phone calls. I did however go a about fifteen miles north last week and LTE was working automatically. I am optimistic it should be working here soon also.

Spark in Dallas
I'm in the Dallas area and have enabled all 3 bands for LTE but don't see anything other than band 25 on my N5. I've changed the priority and all that jazz but nothing changes.
Major disappointment as I got this phone for the tri-band service that was supposed to be so awesome.
I really hope the firmware update this quarter is a real thing and I hope they hurry up with it. Tired of the terrible reception and LTE speeds in and around Dallas. My wife has the S4 and she gets better LTE coverage and speeds than my N5.
I'm in Houston and we have spark here.
As for the N5 no go with all three bands enabled.
I did however get atxt from sprint that says "Over the next month the new network will be largely completed in your area making it better than ever! http://sprint.us/network1 Replay S to stop"
Hit that link and no real info.
Also we have found that the update for the N5 will enable the two extra bands and a new APN. Still trying to get the APN from the Flex since it will be rolling out with Spark enabled. I think that is all we will need but don't quote me on that.
The Nexus 5 and LG G2 are going to get their Spark Updates sometime in the future, hopefully soon.
If you really wanted to take advantage of Spark ASAP, you should have gotten a Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini, Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, HTC One Max, or the new model of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 (Model number: SPH-L720T).
For the Nexus and LG G2, I read somewhere that LG was having problems with getting Triband LTE to work properly, but the G2 is supposedly getting their update by the end of this month. That should be a good sign that our Spark update is on the way as well, though the Nexus update needs to be pushed by Google.

LG G2 Updates
The Nexus 5 shouldn't be too far behind, but again, it's up to LG and Google.

Band priority 41,25,26
a reboot always loses connection to band 41. Update prl always gets it back for me.....even though the prl version stays the same per the phone status
Every GALAXY launch we go through the same BS. No 32GB option available, and this time no GOLD or BLUE color options available. Why? Why? Why? Is it really that difficult to include all the colors with 32GB? Now those of us who want to get the phone on launch are once again screwed just like we were last year and the year before on 32gb of storage. Of course I take all this back if the unlocked variant offered AT&T LTE support; which it doesn't by the way. Why am I not surprised? The 16gb S5 will have about 10GB of user storage.
I am so fed up with this type of BS. AT&T is, unfortunately, the only carrier that works well in my area. T-Mobile is spotty with lots of EDGE. If only their service was on lower spectrum, I'd be all over them.
Anyone else feeling just as frustrated with this mess we endure every year.
I totally agree, but the ATT S4 did come with a 32Gb. I am using it right now. I wish Sammy would up them all to 32Gb and an option for 64Gb. 16Gb is too small with how large touchwiz is with each revision. No way I will go back to only 16Gb on board.

16GB is never an issue with me, regardless of the device. It's more than enough for my needs, considering I have maybe 2-4 very small games on my devices at any given time. What does piss me off is the lack of all the colors. I wanted the blue model, but of course, that's not possible...for whatever idiotic reason. I just said screw it and preordered the black. I guess I'll just buy a different back cover down the road.

16GB may not be an issue for everyone, but why can't they just give the customer the choice at pre-launch? I have no problem paying more for storage. Why does Apple sell every color and size up front from day 1? That's what I don't get. Since they are dying so much to be like Apple, then why can't they at least do that?

Agreed -- it really doesn't make any sense at all. All model options should be available from day 1, no exceptions. That's one thing Apple does an excellent job at. They announce their devices and the same day you can start preordering any color/storage model, assuming the stock is available, of course. It pissed me off even more, because we had to wait this long after the S5 announcement to just preorder it...and then we don't have all the options available? Very annoying.

+1, Samsung never have full availability of their models. Either they announce a color but don't have it or announce a 64 GB version and don't have it.

Yeah I know. Its ridiculous. I don't know why I had such high hopes for them to turn around and launch the S5 differently than before.

I know it doesnt help right now, but i recall reading on Engadget recently that T-Mobile is claiming that all of their 2g areas will be upgraded to 4g by 2015 or early in 2015. That should open up more options for you and countless others.

That will help, but a major problem T-Mobile has it that their frequencies don't reach as far as AT&T's and therefore you get EDGE. T-Mobile has all their towers upgraded in my area to HSPA+ and some with LTE, but since those signals don't travel as far, it always turns into EDGE. They need to shut EDGE down entirely and use only H+.
New TouchWiz is just over 8 gigs of space, I've been told the 16gb version will have about 7 gigs of usable storage. I'm waiting for the 32gb version to come to AT&BS I guess a little later this year.

This is why I am thinking of passing on s5 and going to HTC one m8. I checked out the phone at AT&T and very impressed with it plus it comes in 32gb at AT&T as default. Tired of Samsung Bs. They will release a 32gb version on AT&T 6 months down the road or never.

Yea. With the S4 I think they announced the 32GB version about 2 weeks after the 16GB went on sale; ultimately screwing anyone who wanted one because their return policy was up.
I actually ordered the 16GB because I never have come close to filling the internal storage I was just pissed its not an option. I just really wanted the blue. **** like that pisses me off. I am sure if AT&T gets the 32GB it will only come in black. I wanted white this time.
Yeah AT&T waited 2 weeks on purpose so you couldn't return the 16gb version. I bet they will pull something similar now. Hoping that somebody is desperate to open another line or pay full price to get it.

Same thing with last year. 64GB M7 cost the same as a 16GB S4.

Equally as important as the space issue is the "download booster" feature, which is disabled on all the demo devices that are popping up in AT&T stores. I'm going to wait for the actual devices to ship to customers before passing judgment because floor models definitely do have things disabled sometimes. That said, it certainly shouldn't shock anyone that AT&T would want this disabled. Years of history support the idea that they don't want people using their network, and they push people toward WiFi whenever possible. I can just see some corporate goon in a boardroom breaking out in a cold sweat over the idea of people accidentally using download booster and going over their data plans because they didn't realize what they were doing.
Let us not forget this is also the same carrier who disabled installation of non-market APKs on their early Android devices, shipped the Note 2 without the multi-window functionality until enough people raised hell, and removed the Knox security app from the Note 3. This says nothing of the fact that they still manage to get their paws into Nexus devices, successfully getting Google to code in an exception that disables tethering on the Nexus 7 if you have an AT&T SIM card in it. There's no account check or anything else. If you have an AT&T SIM card in your Nexus 7, the tethering option disappears. End of story. Not even Verizon does that. Also, does anyone remember how, for the longest time, AT&T made both Apple and Google disable video chat in Facetime and Hangouts over HSPA+ and LTE, forcing you to use WiFi?
So far, I'm leaving my preorder intact, but if my device doesn't have the download booster feature, I'm returning it. Every time I decide to give a carrier-branded device a chance, it seems I get let down. Even with Nexus devices, AT&T finds a way to let me down (thus why I have my N7 on Verizon). I'm trying to give AT&T the benefit of the doubt on the download booster, but I'm not at all optimistic. :/ I mainly stick with AT&T because they're basically the only choice if you want to use unlocked Nexus and/or GPE devices and still have Verizon-like coverage.

Well said. Personally, I have never used a Nexus device. I have heard bad things about LG's nexus. But I guess it wouldn't be fair of me to judge that device without actually using it. Samsung's TW provides me with exactly what I need. I love the look and a lot of the features. Like you, and as I have already stated, I will keep my pre-order intact and wait until I actually get the device to see for myself if the feature has been disabled or not.
If they do, in fact disable download booster, I probably will go with the international variant. No carrier branding whatsoever. I believe its the same case as in the past. NO LTE, but 21mbps HSPA+ which is fine for my needs. I think loosing LTE may be worth getting an untouched/non-carrier branded Samsung phone. NO limitations, no nothing. Having the ability to have a custom recovery and kernels would be a deal breaker alone. We already know the AT&T S5 will have a locked down bootloader.
One thing I am looking forward to with the AT&T S5 is its support for carrier aggregation. I live in the Chicago land area (one of AT&T's first LTE-A markets). So I am dying to see how much faster my speeds will be.

Well said. Unlocked devices in the USA pretty much only fully support AT&T frequencies. Sure they may be unlocked, but use any other carrier and you'll end up losing out on one to numerous frequencies.

I can't speak for all unlocked devices, but every Nexus device with a cellular radio fully supports all bands for both AT&T and T-Mobile. In addition, the Nexus 5 fully supports all Sprint CDMA and LTE bands, and the 2013 N7 has full Verizon LTE support.
On the GPE side, you're right. The Moto G and both generations of the HTC One lack support for HSPA+ on the AWS/1700 MHz band, which T-Mobile requires for any area not refarmed to use HSPA+ on the PCS/1900 MHz band.
That said, all GPEs fully support T-Mobile LTE.

Yeah that's true I forgot about T-Mobile. Nexus 5 did it right with good carrier support. GPE supporting T-Mobile and AT&T is nice, but nowhere near ideal. Case in point the M8 unlocked and Dev editions only support AT&T. Also, I think the unlocked iPhones support all the US carriers (99% sure).
Point is, to my knowledge, unlocked device support in the USA is like this (greatest adoption to least):
1. AT&T
2. T-Mobile
3. Sprint (very little support)
4. Verizon (pretty much nothing)

i'm confused, why doesn't everyone that want bigger memory space to just spend 35 dollars on amazon and get a 64GB micro card? that'd what i did so now when i get my AT&T S5, I'll have a total of 70 GBs free space....
i think you guys are crying way too much about this 16GB deal.
The LG G2 is basically a better Nexus 5. I've been looking at the Nexus 6 (and G3) and honestly the G2 is still pretty fast and does everything I need, plus it has unlocked bootloader exploit which is a huge plus.
The only question is, will we get a stable L rom? Will Verizon give us an update, and how long will it take CM/AOSP?
If Verizon actually gets the Nexus 6, I would seriously consider getting it. I still love my g2 though.
Thanks Devs, from my LG G2
Nope, not happening... 5.9" display is just too big. The G2 with a 5.2" is at about the max I can handle with one hand, and I use my phone almost exclusively one-handed. I actually passed on a OnePlus One because of size, going to the N6 is just too big.
I am hoping the playstore version has VOLTE support so we can avoid the Verizon branded Nexus. As long as the device supports VOLTE we can use it on the VZW network, thanks to the 700mhz specturm that VZW uses for its LTE. I'm sure Verizon will try to find some BS loophole to try to exploit to maintain their control. Back on topic... I definitely get the Nexus 6 as I am Nexus fanboy!
Moto is and has been known for their crappy cameras. Even the new Moto X is crappy especially considering that it is a late 2014 device. The Nexus line is and always has been known for using crappy cameras, even the Nexus 5 took a step back from the G2. Put the two together and I wont touch the Nexus 6.
I am considering going to the n5 to be honest the price will go down and if they release a 6 in phone I feel they will keep the n5 around for a bit.
Finally ready to ditch Verizon and move on to a company that will let me text and call from my house. I was thinking the droid turbo because moto apparently has the best radios but idk

I think they are locking it down via your account. Although I guess anyone could turn it on. For the LG G2 you needed an update and you had to go into your account to turn it on. Doesn't makes sense why you would have to do that, I think its just one more point of control maybe to exclude devices. Maybe that is the loophole in the 700 Mhz block rules.
Maybe they are requiring some kind of special software that the device manufacturer or google will have to implement to get it to work? I think they are going to do anything they can to exclude devices they don't approve.
I'm on Verizon now with a HTC one m7. I'm not upgrading but I will be buying a nexus 6 and switching from Verizon.

If Verizon gets the Nexus 6, it's very likely that it will be my next phone. I have a Nexus 7 (2013) and love it. I think with a Nexus 6, we could possibly get Multi-ROM, which would be amazing. I'd love the ability to test drive new ROMs without going through the whole backup/restore process. I think the only things I might miss would be knock-on (easily fixed with a custom kernel, of course) and the IR blaster. I actually do use it.

I love the IR blaster and KnockOn. I'm not sure if the Nexus 6 will support the CDMA bands and such. Being limited to just VOLTE 700mhz is sucky. What about 3G and such?
5.9" is too big. I passed on the Note 3 for the G2 because I travel often for work and require being able to comfortably dial/text/email/facebook using one hand while I drive/eat/fiddle with the radio (lol).
I really love my G2 but I fear that all future next gen devices will be ~6.0"

I'm pretty sure the play edition N6 won't support CDMA unless Google has changed its stance on the matter. Either we will have Verizon release another "Nexus" device for us that officially will always be behind. Or we will just have to stick with the play edition N6 and anyone that doesn't have LTE in their area is SOL. But as of now Verizon's LTE footprint is supposidly just as large as the 3G/1x footprint so I would imagine there wouldn't be too many issues.

Once you active voice over LTE via the website that is all you have to do. Stock LG roms have the ability to switch voice over LTE on, not too sure if any CM/AOSP based have the ability to do so yet. You don't need the crappy Verizon software the advanced calling 1.0 or whatever to use voice over LTE. I'm pretty sure either it will be enabled by default in future devices as VOLTE becomes more popular.
I just hope it works with lte from metro pcs or other mvno carriers. I'm actually leaving Verizon for this phone.

Yes those are Verizon stock ROMs. Not just a LG G2 stock ROM. Verizon had to push a software update to enable VoLTE. They controlled the feature.
I'm pretty sure any ROM can eventually have the option to enable VoLTE. Once activated on the site we very well could be accessing VoLTE without being on Verizon software. I haven't seen much clarification on this, eventually someone will chime in.

All I was saying is that right now Verizon holds the keys to the VoLTE kingdom as I see it. They require a change on your account, which I assume shows up no matter what. But the key is the software update that is coming from Verizon. It remains to be seen if manufacturer updates or Nexus Google updates will be able to have the same update, or if there was something unique to Verizon in that update. I wouldn't put it past Verizon to have something special in the update even if it goes against the FCC rules for the LTE spectrum. I would bet that Verizon is going to have to be told they have to allow any LTE device on the network. Look at the Nexus 7 issue, IIRC, if you already had a Sim you could pop it in, but they lagged on getting it "in their system" for it to be put on LTE with a new Sim. Its something that shouldn't even have to be "in a system". You should be able to get a data LTE sim for whatever you want.
I get what you're saying and I agree that Verizon will try to pull some BS. We could very well be using the feature on AOSP/ non vzw ROMs without knowing (doubtful) as long as we enabled the provisioning online. Let's just hope that Verizon doesn't try to pull some stupid bs loophole and let us use any unlocked LTE device that supports the band.

Yes it's a shame, so we have one t-mobile user with no luck, anyone with att try it yet? Or possibly another person with t mobile, just to repeat the experiment for consistency?
I am willing to switch to AT&T - in fact, would prefer to have my iPhone on one carrier, and my Android on another - but the support response doesn't make me hopeful.

You could bring it to att store, ask them to put a sim in see if it works with their store account, if it works gget the prepaid and switch over. They got a 65 plan that is 50 after u get auto pay. 22 gig high speed unlimited.
Maybe try, if they say no or doesn't work return it. I figure the phone specs are worth the attempt

VoLTE works on the Chinese rom. I'm guessing next update will fix it in global rom (especially because a lot of folks are complaining about this). Wifi calling doesn't require any special hardware, so I'm guessing that's a possibility down the line if enough folks complain.
Phone nails all the basics (camera, screen, battery, performance), hopefully they add volte and wifi calling in the near future. Very close to perfection!

I am more than happy to assist you in resolving this matter. The speculation of the ROG Phone II supporting the Verizon network is regrettably false as the final product will be unable to support it. It is compatible with GSM Networks including AT&T, T-Mobile, Straight Talk, Walmart Family Mobile, MetroPCS, Simple Mobile, Brightspot, Net10, h20 Wireless, and Cricket Wireless. I do apologize for any inconveniences cause and hope you have a wonderful day!

So barring any miracles or super secret work arounds, I'm out and back to square one. The Razer 2 has also been on my mind, but mostly because of the price ($350 at Best Buy) and it's still an LCD screen. If only LG would release something like the V20, but with updated specs. I'd take that even over the ROG II.

I would avoid the Razer cause only 845 processor and no aptx Bluetooth codex and camera is just so so. U less ur phone is like 6 years old better to wait for something with 855 plus processor with Android 10 and 11 proofing it

The LCD on the Razer is pretty darned good. I the phone overall is pretty solid. The drawbacks for me are mic when using speakerphone is wonky (introduced with MR0 update) and no aptX or LDAC. I use speakerphone a lot and most of my audio stuff is aptX HD or LDAC so gonna sell the Razer Phone 2 and evidently keep looking.
One plus 7t released, maybe you should get that loos pretty awesome no crappy pop up camera,, 855 plus t mobile will be selling it, 90hz display little less battery but slimmer I'm gonna prob get the McLaren edition the one that is still rumored lol
Just talked to support again. They reiterated no go for VoLTE and VoWifi on American carriers. Zip. Shame, as the phone is so good otherwise. What a helluva thing for them to disable.

It's like having a Ferrari, opening the gas tank for a fill up and finding a straw coming out. You pump gas and 2 percent goes in the rest falls to your feet,
. Yeah it will work but how many attempts, how far will you get how many disconnects. Tell them to remove the f ing straw haha

It's technically the carriers that disable it. It works fine on carriers in other countries using the same exact ROM image. The US carriers require payment to enable/test/certify those features and North American sales volume likely doesn't justify it for Asus' North American division.

I used to work with carriers more than a decade ago. I had hoped this attitude would change. It's easy enough to isolate and block a rogue device - the concern back then. Also still baffling why Asus would disable - why not enable, and if the carrier lets it by, that's on the carrier, not Asus.

What about Google Voice? It would use data, but wouldn't it stay on LTE instead of dropping to 3g?

I tried this. Google Voice let's you choose between using your phone app to make calls or using a data connection. The data connection option sounds better.
This is incorrect !!! ATT is also going to HD Audio dio & VoLTE within the year - got f' email saying my ROG II (only 3 months old) will no longer be supported. I now have a "$1000 paperweight" - ASUS doesn't care, I have tried and now trying to get straight answer out of ATT.
