[Tip] map voice button to CTRL button - Motorola Droid 3

As a keyboard-junkie, I can't live without ctrl-c,x,v,a...
I was able to assign "voice" key to "ctrl_left" key.
with the root explorer, go /system/usr/keylayouts ... and find cdma_solana-keypad.kl or omap4-keypad.kl
key 167 MEDIA_RECORD
key 167 VOICE WAKE_DROPPED
Then
key 167 CTRL_LEFT
or
key 167 MENU
hope this helps, and other ROMs hopefully adopts this.

Absolutely great! Thank you very much! I was pretty annoyed by the copy paste behavior! Now it's perfect, as it should be.

I can't quite get it to work with CTRL_LEFT, when i enter that the button won't do anything.
And typing in MENU makes it work just like the menu-button, wich i don't like cause you have to keep holding the buttons.
Ie, instead of holding Menu+A+C to copy I'd like to make it do like the good old ctrl-a ctrl-c etc we're used to.
Am i supposed to get that function when i enter CTRL_LEFT?

just realized that GB doesn't seem to get CTRL_LEFT working.
with ICS, you can get ctrl enabled, but I'm also using MENU-c,v,x because it's way more useful in various apps...

Ok, thanks for the response.

Short Search Button

Forgive me as I'm sure this has been asked.
I've run search on XDA app as well as googled, and looked everywhere in settings.
My short press search button no longer brings up search function from the home screen. Haptic tells me it's reading fine. Long press to voice search is still good. Short press search in other apps is good too.
Also, MENU | SEARCH is dead too, in home screen.
Running CM nightly 233 & ADW.
Kind of lost. Pointer much appreciated.

Mine works fine on CM 6.1
I'm guessing you've confirmed Google Search app is installed?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Just verified, yup, and runs no problem. Just independent of the button.

I'm guessing you're using CM? And had to delete the GoogleSearch apk and reinstall it from Market to upgrade? Your search is on /data. You need it on /system for the key to work. Get root explorer, or use terminal if you understand basic cd, ls, cp, and mv. Look in /data/app and find the apk for search, rename it to QuickSearchBox.apk, and push it to /system/app. Then reboot, and it should work.
Edit: I can't remember, it might be GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. I think it's what I said the first time, but if that doesn't work, try it with Google in front of it and reboot again. My N1 is currently backing up in recovery or I'd check.
That's it, GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk. Thanks much.

LauncherPro default setting problem

Hey!
This just started in the last couple of days. My phone seems to be resetting the 'default launcher' setting, so pressing the home button shows the 'pick which application you wish to use' prompt... giving me an option between LauncherPro and htc sense.
Checking the 'make this my default ' box helps, but it then resets again. The timing of the reset seems to be random.
I tried reinstalling LauncherPro, no help.
I'm thinking about rooting and uninstalling the htc launcher, but that is more of a hack than a solution.
Any ideas?

Update : it seems that it resets whenever I do a long press on the home key (bring up the recent app menu).
Why would that reset it? Weird.

Click to collapse
Go to settings --> applications --> manage applications --> all --> htc sense --> Clear Defaults (bottom of the page)
Then home key and set launcher pro as default. Worked for me.
Thanks for the reply, but that didn't work :-(
It still resets after every long press of home button.

This has happened to me once yesterday, but with that said I have only had the phone for two days! I am not on a stock ROM I am using Cyanogen, I am unsure if that matters. Hopefully it won't persist.
Interesting, I assumed that it was a Stock issue...but Cyanogen is affected too? Crazy.
It seems to be getting worse for me. At first it seemed to only happen after a long 'home' button press, but now it's every time I press the home button...getting really annoying.
I'm stock atm, but will root and rom when I get back from holiday next week.

Captivate button problems

Hi I just loaded cm7 and I messed around in the settings a bit (i dont remember changing anything special)and now the home and search buttons don't register........ like they vibrate and do the usual thing but the phone doesn't do anything the home button even when I hold it doesn't vibrate a second time. Please help.

You might want to get the Home Switcher app from the market (free). It will let you switch between launchers, and might be able to tell you what is going on with the home button.

Might be the kernel, I went from miui 1.5.27 to 1.6.3 and the orientation was all whack. I flashed a new kernel and it was all well afterwards, had the same problem when updating cm7 once

3D Button remap

I might be the only one that thinks the button is worthless, but if anyone would like to remap it to the camera let me know and I'll write up the instructions on how to change it.
This will disable the option to switch between 2D and 3D when looking at pictures or in the middle of games but if your like me I dont have time to play games or mess with 3D pictures, and yes that makes the phone no different that any of the others but I just like the phone it's self.
steps
1. Download Root Explorer
2. Navigate to /system/usr/keylayout
3. Top of app select mount R/W
4. long click on omap-keypad.kl till menu pops up
5. select open in text editor
6. scroll all the way to the bottom to key 249
7. Edit 3D_HOT_KEY to CAMERA
8. Back out of text editor and select mount R/O in top of app
9. Back out of Root Explorer
10.Reboot
This will now map the 3D button to open the camera insted of something you may never use.
Go back to stock.
1. Navigate back to /system/usr/keylayout
2. Mount R/W
3. Only do this if you have the omap-keypad.kl.bak this is a backup of the original file
4. Delete the modified omap-keypad.kl
5. Rename omap-keypad.kl.bak to omap-keypad.kl
6. Back out and restart.
There you go.

Im interested!
Cool, I may do this, I didn't know it actually turned 3d on / off while in a 3D picture or in the camera.
I hate it when I accidentally hit it.
Might be a dumb question but it just disables the ability to suddenly turn on the 3D in the middle of something but doesn't actually disable the 3D capabilities? If so, I'm very interested.
The remap works. How ever when I changed it back to 3D_HOT_KEY the 3D key does nothing.

silly question, but did you reboot
Yup.

Instead of making it open the camera could it be programmed to act as a shutter button for the camera to take pictures?
No it doesn't disable 3D just changes what the button does.

It makes my four bottom buttons light up as if it's registering that something is supposed to happen. But nothing happens. Strange. I looked back and the text still says CAMERA.
I don't know if this makes a difference or not but under the qwerty.kl it says 3D_HOT_KEY is still at key 249. The ompa-keypad.kl and the omap-keyboard.kl.bak show key 249 as a camera.
When I set it to camera it worked, It took a second to launch after reboot. But what's strange is when I set it back and rebooted. I get nothing. Just the navigation keyslight up but no 3D app. I don't wanna reset my device just to get the button working again with the 3D.

Search button on jellybean

Our nexus have search button which used to search within the running application, for eg, in music player if we press search button it used to search for songs in that player, but this feature is not available in 4.1. Wherever we are, pressing search button opens Google now! Does anyone know how to reassign that button to search within app only, and long pressing to open Google now??????

not everything requires a mod. just press the search and type your song/artist/album name. dont press go. let it filter and it will give you your results. if you press go, it will search the web and you have to select phone from the bottom ribbon.
make sure you have enabled google now --> settings--> phone search --> play music
somethings just need a bit of understanding
I think the best behavior is the original one, search in the app that is opened. I hate when I am in the browser and I click the search and google nows opens. The same happens in all apps like gmail app, I press to search an email and bye bye the apps goes away. I don't really care if galaxy nexus don't have this button. We do and so we should get some advantage of it.
Kind regards
