[Q] Newcomer to the P1000 Galaxy Tab. Put a 'cube out of his confusion.

Okay. So, I've just acquired a Galaxy Tab off eBay. It's on it's way to me, so I thought I'd burn up a few cycles and go download some goods for flashing as soon as I get it.
The setup: ROM version is Gingerbread. Assume Stock ROM. Model is P1000 (Unlocked GSM).
The question is this. I am completely confused as to what I need to do, and I'd like someone to point me in the right direction. With other devices, I would just root, install custom recovery and voila. Non-stock device. Does this same rule apply with the Galaxy Tab, or is it a new ball game?
Basically, what is the easiest way of getting a custom ROM onto my Galaxy Tab? Do I need to use ODIN and co? Or can I do it all via recovery? Is there any n00b guides that explain installing your first ROM?
I don't want to jump through hurdles that I could have avoided. So, that's why I'm asking you for help. Put me out of my confusion, get a +1 thanks in return. Sounds good, no?

root it, install clockworkmod, download and install roms
you will need to flash via odin first because stock rom of gtp1000 have limited options in the recovery mode.
after that, all flashings can be done vie clockworkmod recevery... for your convenience search for these ff. keywords:
overcome kernel
overcome rom
zergrush
cm9 rom
humberos.

So, basically, with any ROM I flash, I must use ODIN to flash the kernel? Or will the ROM take care of that? I heard the kernel is mixed in with the recovery system, so I'm a little unsure as to what the go is.

no u just need o flash a kernel with clockworkmod recovery and all succeding flashings be it rom, kernel or anything else canbe done using clockworkmod recovery. of course there are exceptions if the developer specifically requires u to flash via odin

You should follow the Overcome Guide for your first flash, it is comprehensive and easy peasy, lemon squeezy

Make back up or the original or current rom
I would like to flash my tab with a custom rom, but I also want to be able to revert or go back to the original rom. My question is how you back up your current or original rom so you could restore it back to its original condition? CMIIW but Titanium back up only back up the apps and stuffs but not the rom, or is it?

Please do not hijack my thread. You should make another thread for that - and that's what CWM is used for - making backups!

New to rooting

I have a Samsung i9000 which I have rooted with super one click details of my phone are:
Model: GT-I9000
Firmware: 2.3.5
Baseband: I9000NEJVB
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000NEJVK-CL649158 [email protected] #2
Build No.: GINGERBREAD NEJVK
My question is this Can I flash this phone with any kernel or does it have to be specific to any of the numbers above (which I do not know what they mean) and if it does have to be specific could someone please tell me which kernel/s are compatible

If you want root with proper CWM recovery you will most likely need to flash a kernel with Odin.
SuperOneClick gives you root for things like apps but you generally still have 3e recovery and you end up with signature failure whenever you try flash something from CWM.
In terms of kernels the easiest one which is closest to stock is CF-Root.

You generally want the same cf-root kernel as the last three digits of where it says gingerbreadxxx.
The rest of the instructions are in the first couple of posts. Fairly long but if you just read it slowly and go step by step its fairly easy.
Once you have flashed this you should have the correct recovery to flash other kernels & custom roms.
NB: Before you start all of this make sure to back up your phone. I would recommend connecting phone to pc & copying entire internal sd card straight to a folder on your pc. Also make sure to back up EFS folder. This is where your EMEI number is stored and you will want this if something goes wrong.

Before you do anything — Make a backup
Don't forget to back up your data. If you have synced the device with a Google account, then the contacts, calendar, Gmail, & select other Google-related data will not be lost and will come back after the next sync. However, you should backup anything you want to keep that is not stored on the SD card:
SMS/MMS messages, Call Log, Bookmarks, Applications; use Titanium Backup or the Astro File Manager, for example, Any application data not on the SD card.
It would also be a good idea to backup everything stored on the SD card in the rare case the SD card must be formatted to resolve any major problems.
MyBackup Root, SMS Backup & Restore, and Call Backup & Restore are all free applications that can assist with backing up your data.

Firstly everything scubadude said above is fairly important
Secondly; well it really depends on what you're looking for mate. If you just wanna upgrade your kernel (and by the sounds of it you dont really know what a kernel is, or what it does) then flashing a kernel only does so much on a standard rom. Flashing CF root kernel gives you proper root for root apps and clockworkmod (CWM) recovery so you can flash addons and suchlike.
However people usually root their phones so they can install a custom rom, which can improve speed, battery life, functionality and a ton of other things, and that's when people start looking around for different kernels which complement their current rom.
Just wanting a kernel with your stock rom doesn't make a whole load of sense. A ROM is what'll improve your phone.
If you want all the benefits of rooting, i'd suggest looking for a new ROM and flashing that.
If you're unsure of what rom to flash, read around in the i9000 development forum and read through different roms features. You could flash an android 2.3.X rom which would be a gingerbread (GB) rom or an android 4.0.X rom which would be an ice cream sandwich rom (ICS)
Dont ask which is the best rom for GB or ICS please, there are a billion threads like it, and it always comes down to this; read around, look at the features each rom gives, look at any bugs they may have (ICS roms probably have a few bugs here and there where most GB roms are completely stable) and decide if said ROM is good for you.
If you want a very stable, very fast, decent battery life and easy to flash GB rom then i'd suggest Gamerzrom. I'm running it atm.
However the dev stopped developing for it, but i can link you to ALL the files you need to flash the rom and a set of instructions if you'd like. I have a copy of all of them because i flash new roms but i usually go back to it anyway.
Definitely read the development section, you'll find something that sounds good for you.
Oh and for your information;
ICS > GB
and for GB firmwares, in order from newest to oldest, all 2.3.6 firmwares;
JW5>JW4>JVU>JW1
(those last two may be mixed up)
Most GB roms are on 2.3.6 now so it helps to know the above.

As mentioned there are plenty of threads out there asking about ROMS & for every ROM there are going to be people that tell you the one they are using is best. If you are going ICS there is a nice easy tutorial here.
It is for Team ICSSGS. It is an older ICS ROM but development has been slow lately so while it is still good it is running ICS 4.0.3 while the newer ROMS are all on ICS 4.0.4. Having said that it is still a great tutorial & rom to get you started. It goes right from all the files you need, to getting a stock rom in case things fail to flashing ICS. Once you done everything in this tutorial you will be in a good position to start flashing & testing roms to find the one you like.

Root is essential if want access to the system of your phone(elusive folders).
Then u can tweak kernel(eg.voltage control or mc tweaker)and improve GPS(GPS aids) or backup your apps and settings with titanium backup.all these are apps u can download from android market.
These are good reasons to root your phone.
If u flash cf-root kernel u will have many options to tweak your phone,because it support init-d(all custom kernel's support this).like supercharger v6 or thunderbolt tweaks this will improve your phone greatly.but u need to READ a lot before going down this road.
Anyway good luck and don't be afraid to root.

ok i think i may have screwed up my phone i flashed the cf-root kernel and phone rebooted. it has now been stuck on the boot animation for an age( blue flashing android word) is there a way of getting it back to stock nejvb. please help this is my only mobile

Go to settings/about phone and check your build,then go to cf-root thread and find a kernel that matches your build and flash that.
But make sure that it's the i9000 thread and not the i9100.
There is a MOBILE ODIN,that is quite easy to operate. If u already got root u can flash almost anything.search for it, it's made by chainfire(cf-root, yep same guy)
But u need root to operate

ok managed to flash my kernel with the cf-jvb kernel. what i would like to know now is "can i now just flash a rom, and could u explain what a modem is and do i need one or is it included in the rom" i am wanting to speed up my i9000 so could someone suggest a stable GB or ICS rom.

I have just noticed that this new kernel will not allow Wi-Fi connection it will turn on, scan, wont find my connection and then turn its self off. Have I done something wrong or is it just the kernel that doesn't allow it?

According to your opening post. Your build is jvk not jvb. Jvb is your baseband. Which you change depending on where in the world you live, it will make your phone have a strong signal. For example my build is jw5 so I use a root made for jw5. I use kg3 as my baseband because it is the stock bell Canada modem and gives the best signal. Root with jvk not jvb. Gl

Flashing ROM's with mobile odin, what am I in for ?

I've read up several threads on this an I think what I want to do is a bit unique but I am not completely sure. I rooted my phone with Odin a week ago going from official gingerbread and used the stock Kernel. Root went off without a hitch but wasn't able to get into CWM recovery so I did some searching and just now flashed to the Corn Kernel 7.05. Works Perfect !
I want to now use mobile Odin to try out a few new roms as I can upgrade my phone now but want to give this a shot to breath some new life into my nearly 2 year old cappy. Flashing the kernel with mobile odin was s snap but I guess after reading the how and developers page I am lost on what types of ROM's I use with it. I'm new to all of this so judging stages of stability if not something I am sure about. I want some I wont have to compromise much with but will broaden my horizons some. I am so new cyanogen and maybe doc's ICS mod are the only ones I really know about but I don't know if those work with Odin or if I need to use CMW.
So final questions are these:
- Mod that will be stable and I can flash using only mobile odin or CMW (not using a PC) ?
- Does creating a backup of the ROM in CMW allow me to fix a bad ROM flash ?
- Is there an ICS build for cappy that will work for my situation ?

1. You can basically flash almost anything that isn't stock through CWM; you don't really need mobile odin too much. There are a lot of things considered "stable" that may not be stable for you. I considered alpha CM9 "stable," but others may disagree. It is up to you to find a ROM that suits you the best.
Keep in mind, you can only use Mobile Odin on Samsung-based BML ROMs.
2. To fix a "bad" ROM flash, you'd probably just flash the ROM again. But you can use the backup to restore your phone to its exact state at time of backup (with few exceptions).
3. What exactly is your situation? No matter what, I recommend CM9 nightlies but there certainly are other things out there to try that could work for you. Everything is CWM flashable, no Odin.
Just wondering, why can't you use a computer at all? You may need one in case you screw something up down the road.

1. Thank for clearing that up. I was using mobile odin at first because I wasn't able to boot into recovery with CWM but with the corn kernel that fixed everything and I've been getting myself more accustomed to working in there. Mobile odin seemed good for me to flash the new kernel easily and care free.
2. I was worried about a bad flash because I've read that using nandroid backups can be iffy (That's what CWM uses from what I have seen). Should I trust these backups ? I backed up everything in TiBu. I looked at the Wiki for cyanogen mod and it seems odd that the steps to flash the ROM's in CWM are very few so having few steps makes me think they have left something out or there is a step that is somehow understood I am missing)
3. I live in the boonies and my internet is even slower even though it's *cringe* 1.5 DSL haha. As far as my situation I mean something that would allow me to mess around with my phone some while knowing its stable because with 3 kids and having to have my phone I didn't want to be out of pocket for an extended period of time. I've been reading that ICS requires you to go back to stock to flash another ICS ROM but in my mind that doesn't seem too inconvenient.
I come from the desktop world and work well with hardware, not so much with software knowledge so trying to teach myself some new stuff since mobile seems to be here to stay. Making just a rudimentary app is a goal of mine even if no one cares so starting at the beginning trying to learn. Don't want to be one of those guys the noob video is made for who just begs for the way to root a phone and never contributes haha.

Flashing other stock rom for S5830i

First, I'd like to thank you for plenty of useful resources I found here...
I just got a new Ace S5830i, but the problem is that it's has a kind of carrier-specific rom (with 2.3.6), full of useless and annoying stuff that is difficult to remove. I managed to root it and thought about flashing some custom rom like CyanogenMod but it seems that there are no versions for the S5830i
So my question is if you know any clean stock firmware that would run smoothly on that device. I was looking for something from European region and I found a stock Austrian firmware, but the endings do not match my numbers (I have PDA: S5830iXXLC2, PHONE: S5830iXXLC1,CSC: S5830iPRTLC1, Product Code: GT2S5830OKIPRT; the rom is: GT2S5830OKIATO, PDA, CSC and PHONE with endings: XXLA4). Is that firmware still compatible? I think I will have to split the file (thanks to SplitFUS2) and flash it via Odin, but I was wondering if flashing just the PDA part would do the job, if I only want to have a clean Gingerbread installation for this phone and not to change anything else.
I have made backups in CWRecovery and for Odin, but I'd prefer not to brick that new toy

Are you talking about AOSP or just un-bloated?
For AOSP, nope not possible.
For un-bloated use an app like root explorer and go to system/app and delete the apps that you don't want.

I just got the S5830i myself aswell only to find that there's almost nothing in terms of custom firmware or whatnot that works with it right now, i'm interested in this Titanium Backup thing you used, is this it on the google play App Store that i'm seeing? (Apparently I can't link to outside places until after 10 posts...) It says you need to root the phone first, can you tell me how you did your S5830i please?
Also, what exactly did you do with Titanium Backup to improve the phone like removing what kind of apps / bloat?

So i got a samsung galaxy ace, it's rooted and with b84 CF-Root kernel.
1) The thing is sometimes, I press Wi-Fi button or Bluetooth, and in the Wifi it says Error and on bluetooth just won't conect. I don't know what the problem is, and the only solution is to reboot the phone. Is this a problem? Can it be fixed? If It can, how? If not, please read point number 2.
2) If its not fixable, what ROM you advice me to reinstall? I have s5830XWKS2, some people say the DDxxx8(or something like that) is better don't know why I'm no programmer...
2.1) If I really have to have to reinstall it in order to fix it, how can I do it? Can you point out the thread for it?
3) I run a small business, and I use Tasker for all my stuff. together with other 60+ apps I need to keep, i'm using SD card with ext partition with Link2SD. And the thing i'm most afraid of, is loosing all the data. I came from a Nokia 5800XM, and I flashed it some times, backups are easy to do. Now here on Android becomes a bit complicated. Maybe never someone cleared me enough about it. So what can I do to sucessfully restore all data on the new ROM? I got Titanium backups, and CWM..Will that backup even my dictionary saved words?
4) Thanks, and please, again, make notice that I can't loose anything due to my business, but I can't work with phone needing to reboot at random times cause of wifi or bluetooh beeing bricked.

First of all. There is no such things as urgent situation here. You should remember that.
Second thing. You should post questions in Q&A sub-section. General is for sharing and discussions.
Third thing. There is a adb logcat thingie, which allows to understand a root of your problem more than 'Help me. Something doesn't work'

Yes I experienced the same problem,could be software bugs problem so I think you can reinstall your software for the better.
I prefer cm mod7/8 for ace as it is much faster so you can try Google cyanogenmod for ace. They have all the tutorial you need.
As for your Apps, titanium backup will do fine. Its the best backup so far. Your dictionary words is the default system one? I recommend you smart keyboard pro as it has the function to backup all your words
So in short, backup your EVERYTHING with titanium backup, rmb your contacts too, and install cyannogen mod 7 or 8 whichever you prefer! Hope this helps!

There's no such thing as cyanogen mod 8...only unofficial cm 7.1 kang and official cm 7.2...
Nunopitbull, wifi & bluetooth problems that you experience are caused by the kernel, not the firmware or rom...so my suggestion is to use a kernel that is not based on cf root or use a stock kernel (the one that came with your phone)...just root your phone with the update zip method will do, and for cwm flash the zip for it...the newest version for sga is 5.0.2.6...there's no need to flash a custom kernel...
About cwm backups, it backups your whole system and data partition and also your boot.img (kernel related)...so yes, it is quite safe to say that your whole phone is backup-ed...but keep in mind that stock roms use .rfs format for the partitions...new custom roms use .ext4 format...so to flash a backup of a stock rom, first flash a fresh stock firmware with ODIN and the cooper.pit file...then re-root and re-flash cwm to restore your phone...
And fyi, link2sd uses a second partition right? The apps inside the second partition can be relinked if you reset the phone...as long as you don't format the second partition...but personally I suggest you to use DTa2sd or amarulzz script as it saves more internal space...check it out...

So you're saying my problem of wi-fi/bluetooth is because of kernel? Can you help me by PM how to get it working again? I wanted a custom kernel don't remember already why, but I think was for the custom speeds of CPU, so I could have low ones..
Just want this bug to disapear of bluetooth and wifi!

So far I haven't seen a custom kernel for sga that works flawlessly...especially the ones with oc function...only stock kernels work with the least problems...since you want to underclock, just use the stock kernel and set it to the lowest value with an app like set cpu...it shall do you fine...

What are the other advntages with the CF Root kernel? I can't remmeber why I puted it, but I think they were another reason behind it...
Where I can get teh stock kernel? Or which one you advise?

So i got a samsung galaxy ace, it's rooted and with b84 CF-Root kernel.
1) The thing is sometimes, I press Wi-Fi button or Bluetooth, and in the Wifi it says Error and on bluetooth just won't conect. I don't know what the problem is, and the only solution is to reboot the phone. Is this a problem? Can it be fixed? If It can, how? If not, please read point number 2.

Try flashing a new kernel, this is NOT a rom issue, just a kernel issue.
