I'm new to non-stock roms and on a steep learning curve.
I've just installed CM 7.2 (I guess the "official version" - the one from the ClockworkMod website). I'm mostly very happy with it, but keep running into problems with permissions.
If I try almost any command using either the terminal emulator or adb, I get "permission denied" even after su-ing and/or adb root.
Even the most basic command "ls", returns "permission denied".
This problem also seems to be affecting the system a bit. For example, I can't get ClockSync to work - it shows the error message: "Failed to change /dev/alarm permissions, please check that chmod works."
So two questions:
Is this normal for CM 7.2, or is there something wrong with my system?
If it is normal, I notice that there is another version (Mebitek), does that have the same restrictions?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks yackovsky.
I've just read the last few pages of the mebitek thread and I noticed that several people were complaining about battery life in the latest version.
Would you recommend the latest, or going back to 1.0, or even 0.7 as some others have done?

well, if latest version have bad battery backup (i didn't test latest one, but was using it for a while) go for previous one, or try finding kittenlinux build in dev section, i was very happy with it, and it doesn't have options unsupported by mini's hardware like automatic backlight
Just in case anyone else has similar problems and ends up here, it turns out my permission problems were not caused by the official CM7.2 rom.
I did install the mebitek version as suggested by yackovsky, and indeed, when I checked on the terminal emulator, permissions were back to normal.
But this got me thinking, so I did a fresh install of the official rom, and permissions were also back to normal.
So I must have done something to mess up my system
Unfortunately, because of the permission problems, I couldn't do a titanium backup, so I'm having to start from scratch with apps.
Anyway, thanks again to yackovsky; I think I'll stay with mebitek now, it does seem a little snappier.

ok i have had for about 3 or 4 weeks cyanogenmod and it doesnt always pick up my email...if i go into an app while listen to music (like ip cam or even the browser) the music app crashes (just stops and when i load it up again its rest back to where i was when i loaded the music app that time) so i want to change roms
heres the details

model number : T-Mobile g1

wow thats a lot of digits!
ok so what custom kernal/firmware do you guys recommend? (i know its down to personal taste but i need an alternative, im tired of my phone being so sluggish)
the requirments i have
apps to sd (as easy as possible!)
extra home screens
thats all i really need in a kernal (the ability to go to the next track with the hangup button on my bluetooth headset would be fantastic, but i guess that will never happen )

Try updating to the latest cyanogen, or try something like Super D, thats supposed ot be quick.
Perhaps upgrade to Cyangenmod version 4.2.14.1? You seem to have missed some versions. An alternative would be, the Super-D versions. For other options: check the ROM-posts, download them and install them. See which one you like the most.
i ran the cm updater and it says no new versions available will look into super d thankyou
the cm updater apears to have gone lazy im following the wiki to update the rom now
also if i try super-d rom i will need to do a full wipe...i renember the term but not the method (stupid brain)
I've tried every rom here and I use TheOfficial. It works great, it rarely forces closes, and it's never crashed. The links are in my signature. If your phone starts to run sluggish, get a task manager see how much free ram you have. That's a problem common to all roms.
Also, posting a question in the Q & A section will get you more responses.

Look fot Titanium Backup in the Market. (Search for root) It will backup all your apps and data, making a full wipe much less inconvient.

Enom's offical is actually faster than cyan & Super-D after doing tests for both. Apps open fast even with a max of 384. Plus enom uses the expo to get more things. I've used theoffical for a long time(since it came out) and think you should try it. However flashing the RC29 is also a good option for you then you can wait for 1.6 and then wait for the infamous rumor to go airborne to give you 2.1 .
ok this is wierd
held down home+back when turning on to do a factory reset
i updated to 4.2.14.1
i used the factory reset in recovery
i booted up (took ages)
cmupdater immediatly said there was an update (4.2.9.1) i think cmupdater might of become senile

It wont find a new version, because the updater thinks that .14 is older than .9 because of the one.
You can change that in the options (or just download the new version in the CM topic here on xda)
Moved as not Android Development.
thank you
i flashed the official (adp version) plus expansion... just looking at themes now
it doesnt look much different (hence the themes lol) but seems a lot faster
Hello fellow android users, I recently started getting this fc on my favorite app, TaskOS. It was working perfect on my CM 4.2.15.1 until I decided to try SuperD 1.10.2. I was wondering if SuperD would work if I just flash it on top of CM but it didn't. Ofcourse I made a nandroid+ext backup, so I just restored CM afterward. However, the problem I was getting was that TaskOS wasn't working after the restore. It wouldn't even open and it would just bring me straight to fc.
I tried pushing the apk file to different places such as, system/sd/app and system/app, but I couldn't get it to work. I also tried fix_permissions in terminal and "fix uid mismatch" in the latest AmonRa and I tried reinstalling too.
Is it not mismatch problem? I don't know but I really want this app to work.
Thanks in advance.
That'll teach you not to flash roms on top of each other when it says to wipe when coming from a different rom set.
We need a logcat to verify if it is a permission problem.
Best bet is to just wipe and start over. Worse case senario you just restore back and you know it's a problem with the application or rom.
You'll know that I already restored with nandroid if you read what I wrote. So I'll try this logcat.
Read my post about wiping THEN installing the program again. AKA starting over.
Actually the reason why I tried to just install on top of CM is that I didn't want wiping. I don't want to lose my settings and saves. Anyway, I fixed it through logcat. thanks for helping!
I am running DarchDroid 2.8 (AOSP 2.1 based) and decided to give his 2.2 CM6 build a shot. Did a NAND backup, wiped, and flashed CM6 on. Worked fine, but didn't feel like going through the process of "reconfiguring" everything to get it just how I liked it again just at the moment, so restored back to 2.1 (wiped in between) and now my root/SU Permissions app isn't working at all - tethering won't start, etc.
I tried re-running Unrevoked again from the shell, but that gives me an error:
Code:
chmod: /data/DxDrm/unrevoked.1327: No such file or directory
/sdcard/unrevoked: /data/DxDrm/unrevoked.1327: not found
rm: can't remove '/data/DxDrm/unrevoked.1327': No such file or directory
Any suggestions!?!?
Thanks!
Is USB debugging checked in Settings->Applications->Development? That could be it.
Did you flash nfinitefx45's stock 2.1 ROM? Or just go back to Darchdroid?

Debugging is off, and I just wiped then did NAND restore to the backup I made right before doing the 2.2 flash.

Debugging needs to be ON for superuser permissions to work. I think for wifi-tether too since it has to call root permissions.
OK, I restored a backup of CM6 to see if root worked in it and it does. I noticed that it looks to be a new version of the SU Permissions app, so maybe that has something to do with it... in any case, I suppose I will just suck up the time to reconfigure my phone to use 2.2, it seems faster and the only bugs that I see mentioned are small enough they shouldn't be a problem, as long as I can get my Exchange calendar syncing working like it did under DarchDroid 2.8...
Unless someone has a solution?

Oh, upgrade to the 2.3 Superuser app. It's available on the Market. Or you could probably search around the forum and downgrade to SU 2.1 if you wish. I think that's what I'm using right now and I don't have any problems with it.
Sorry, forgot about that til you mentioned your version -- SU 2.2.2 did have some issues.
Hm, I can give it a try... but it's pretty much always OFF, I thought, and wifi tether/SU always worked fine. Thanks for the help!!!
That's what I was thinking after I saw the new SU app was different in 2.2 - Not sure why it would affect my SU app in 2.1, but I'll give it a try and see how it goes.
I'm sure I will upgrade to CM2.2 but I'll wait for another few builds and I have an afternoon to mess with it.
Thanks again!
Hey guys. I just rooted, flashed a new ROM ( newest CM7) onto my p970 last night, so yeah, I'm a total newb and so much confused about these things. Apparently I saw a thread about kernels and that they kinda improve performances and stuff, so I tried installing them. And now my phone is in boot loop state and I can't boot CWM to reflash the original kernel. I used Huexxx's kernel from this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332311
So I'd be really grateful if someone could link a thread on how to fix this, or a step by step guide. And I'm totally new to this forum so I'd like to apologize beforehand if I break any forum rules and the likes. Thx.

* nvm, I somehow was able to boot into CWM from the boot screen and then I just reflashed the current ROM. Thx btw
What has happened to you device? Bootloop? DO this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275315 AND READ my NOOBGUIDE!
You have to flash a new software, root it, install CWM and then reflash CM7 WITHOUT KERNEL! There is none working at this time. Although Nova 12 is planed for it
-edit- woops read your edit too late...
Thx bro

| Thx for the reply, really appreciate it. Man there are a lot o' things I need to learn
| btw, if you don't mind answering, it seems that the phone gets real laggy after a an hour or so of turning it on. I've checked the apps and made sure that none are eating up the phone's memory. Is it just me or does it has something to do with CM7?
Hope you dont use any memory cleaner or other "tuning" software, since this mostly only messes the phones up... Mine runs fine, so I guess it is a problem on your side. I always recommend fix permission from within RomManager, cause it often solves/solved problems. I also always move all apps to SD card, inside of App Manager (the stock one, not anyone from market) cause it saves space and resources for the phone.
Did you mess around with cyanogen settings? Which governor do you use? Maybe use SetCPU or NoFrills or similar? If so, uninstall it.
Simply list all your apps, if none of the given tips helped And do a reboot all couple days, since it seems to be good for the phone
I have a rooted Droid 4 running 4.1.2. I have only flashed a ROM onto a phone once before, on an LG Ally a few years ago. So I'm proceeding cautiously. I've tried to do some research and just confused myself further. I'm just going to post my questions here and hopefully you guys can help. I appreciate it in advance.
1. I don't have custom recovery on the phone yet. It's just rooted at this point. What recovery would you guys recommend? I've seen some references to GooManager -- would that app automate the custom recovery installation for me, or do I need to download Safestrap or something like that to the computer and install from there?
2. Do I have to root again after that?
3. What is the highest current stable version of Cyanogenmod that will run on this phone?

1. I don't know anything about GooManager or if it is compatible with the D4 but safestrap is a really great piece of software that is easy to use. I highly recommend it. Just download and install the app on your phone. Then open the app and install recovery. From there, when you reboot, you will be given the option to boot into safestrap recovery where you can install your ROMs.
2. You will not need to re-root your phone.
3. I am running CM10.2 (Android 4.3) nightlies and have found them to be very stable. I've also heard the latest stable version of CM10.1 (Android 4.2.2) is very good as well.
Now I have a Wi-Fi problem

Thank you. I got CM10.2 nightly for 9/28 installed and working. There is only one problem I found so far -- I can't get wi-fi to connect at home. It says it's authenticating, then it saves, then it says there is an authentication problem. I have no problems when I run stock, but it will not work with CM 10.2
I researched online and found lots of people having problems. Some people re-flashed the ROM and it fixed it, others tried this, that or the other and weren't even sure what fixed the problem. Some never fixed it at all.
I did the Wipe/Factory Reset. I re-flashed the ROM. I went back and flashed the 9/27 nightly since 9/28 didn't work. I rebooted my router. I did a Forget on the network and re-added it. My password is correct. I'm at a loss. Not having WiFi with this ROM is like having a great new car that does everything you want except it doesn't do left turns.

Sounds like you have tried most of the things I would have tried to fix it. One other thing you can try: open the Terminal app. Type "SU" and press enter. Then type "wificall.sh" and press enter. That will recalibrate the wifi on the phone. One other thing that comes to mind is I remember some people mentioning when they flashed a new ROM the D4s MAC address got changed which screwed with the wifi connection to their router. I can't remember what the fix was for it, but might be something to google if wifical does not fix it.

Wifi has been hit and miss lately. I had to go back to 9/26 nightly. Didn't have working wifi until 10/2 nightly.
Some of the guys in the development thread found some clues as to why. The must be working on the wifi drivers in the nightlies right now.

This thread looks like a proper place to address that step as it appears to be exactly what you do after you get CM running.
Thanks!

Find the gapps for your version of cm and flash like you did the ROM. Usually you would flash the gapps when you do the ROM.

1. I prefer safestrap, you can install up to 4 more ROMs in addition to stock ROM. And it's the safest method to try those ROMs
2. That depends on the ROM you are going to install. Most custom ROMs have been rooted already.
3. CM11 that is Android 4.4 KitKat, sweet eh? (correction : CM11 is not stable development yet, but it is latest and nicely working)
