Bricked and solution seeking - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After sifting through tons of sites, articles, threads and suggestions on the many ways to unbrick a Samsung Captivate I am nearly ready to throw in the towel. I bricked my phone by accidentally knocking the wire out while flashing a ROM. After a few attempts to correct the problem, it only progressively got worse.
I CAN get to download mode (vol up/down + attach usb). I have the correct drivers, I've tried Odin, Heimdall was a total failure for me (the one-click solution required drivers that required administrator permissions that I, even in the Administrator account, seemed unable to provide) and I've also tried a few different drivers. I'm hesitant to use a jig because I am able to get to download mode.
When I attempt to use Odin, it sees the device, it starts everything fine and dandy, until the factoryfs.fs part. It freezes usually after one bar of progress. Sometimes I get a progress bar on the phone, sometimes I don't.
Any thoughts?

Try a different micro usb/usb cable. Use a usb port in the back of the pc...don't use a hub.

You have to select "show all" from the menu in the driver installer.

[Q] ODIN doesn't see my phone in download mode.

Phone is ATT captivate SGH-I897 1008
Had my phone for 4 months or so, most of the time with cognition 2.x on it. Tried to update to 3.02 yesterday, and it had an error in the middle, left me at a recovery screen of sorts, and I chose to reboot from the possible selections. It got stuck on the ATT worldcom splash screen.
I tried several things. First, I tried to boot into recovery mode (vol up+power, then release) stays on splash screen. However, in this mode, if I connect my phone via USB, an adb devices command shows as connected. From there I tried both an adb reboot recovery, and adb reboot download command. The adb reboot recovery reboots into the worldcom splash screen just like the key combo does. I can't recall what the download option did, though I think it worked.
Secondly, I realized I could reliably get the phone into download mode, so I decided I would try the download mode, and restore to stock. I found an ODIN on the seminal ODIN thread, downloaded it, and started it up. Put the phone into download mode (hold vol + and vol -, plug in the usb) and that worked fine, however, ODIN doesn't see my phone. I left the phone in this mode for a couple hours just to make sure, and tried disconnecting, and reconnecting, and initialized the procedure from the beginning several times -- no go.
So, I am stuck, and coming to the experts. Hopefully, someone has some good suggestions. I was unable to find someone in a similar predicament, so maybe I am SOL.
Thanks in advance for any help.
UPDATE:
I rebooted my laptop (windows XP) and when I plugged in my phone, it saw "new" hardware and the name of the hardware it sees is "gadget serial." This might explain, if it is not initializing the right drivers why ODIN can't see the phone. The only problem is I don't have any clue how to redirect it to see the right hardware now.
Success Update
After reading the seminal ODIN thread a bit more careful, I came across someone who had similar issues with the gadget serial device. Apparently the drivers I got (I think from the Samsung site) are not good enough to cover that aspect of use. I installed with the drivers from links on the ODIN post and my phone was recognized! As I type, I am installing back to stock.
Thanks everyone for their efforts, and I hope my experience could be useful.
Desk top or laptop, have you tried all the ports
I would test to see if adb recognizes your device first during normal operations. I'd that doesn't work, your usb port may not have enough power or you have a bad usb cable. I think adb can also restart right into download mode but check around first.

I tried two differing cables, both of good quality. One was the cable that came with the phone, the other was a mini-usb cable with a micro adapter. Neither worked. I can't do normal operations right now (that I know of), seeing how the phone is in a bad state.

Sorry, didn't read your first post close enough. I'm not sure what you can do, someone suggested the battery pull method in another thread, but that was just to get their phone in Download mode. It had nothing to do with ODIN after it was in download mode. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for you. Good luck.
I'm having a similar issue except that odin sees the phone when booted into the rom, which I find odd.
Would you be so kind as to link the drivers?

[Resolved] Can't access device via Heimdall

Hello all,
The past day or so I have been attempting to install a fresh custom rom on my vzw tablet. I presently have a stock copy of DJ11 that is rooted installed.
When I put the device into download mode and connect to the computer, Heimdall (version 1.1.1) gives me the following error
Failed to access device. Error: -12
I have tried reinstalling the drivers, both off of the tablet and from the ZAdiag program included with Heimdall and the error persists. I have tried many different combinations of opening/closing heimdall/disconnecting and reconnecting the tablet while in download and out of download, and I have tried on two different PCs. Nothing seems to fix the problem.
I have seen another post on the forums about this particular issue, but the method of resolution that user was able to make work has not worked for me.
It seems to me that the tablet itself is to blame, like it is locking Heimdall out.
Basically at this point, any rom that requires use of Heimdall to install is not going to work. I do have CWM3 and the Verizon Bootstrapper installed, so if anyone has a link to a completely stock copy of the rom that comes in a zip, please link it as I would like to try that method of installing a new rom.
Thank you for any insight at all!!
Have you checked with odin to make sure the tablet is not connecting?
I had the same problem and pluged the device in another usb port, then hold power, volume down e home and after a while odin showed the yellow bar.
then disconnected it and put in another usb port, after that heimdall found it.
and to mention my tablet was dead, no screen no donwload mode, and not responding to button press. and still i was able to connect and ressurect it doing this.
Thanks for the good idea! When I connect it with Odin open, I get the yellow bar. I think that Heimdall is connecting as well, it just isn't being allowed to make any changes. Access denied is my suspicion. I'm not sure what would cause that, or how to correct it.

I am pleased to report that I was able to find a solution. With Odin running, I was getting a yellow bar indicating the device was connected. I ran Heimdall while Odin was still open...and voila, it worked without a hitch.
Thanks again for the assistance. Keep this one tucked away in your memory in case you ever experience something similar!
You can also update the USB drivers through Heimdall like the instructions say.... Might be a safer way than to have ODIN open too...
You just need to downgrade the usb drivers after using Heimdall to use ODIN again...

[Q] JIG worked now the computer wont recognize the device

i attempted to flash my captivate from stock 2.1 to fasty 2.2 with odin, I read through a bunch of different forums and i thought i had everything set up properly and then flashing afterwards when i attempted to boot up the phone it would flash the at&t screen like its going to turn on repeatedly. so the thing with the phone is that none of the button combinations work to get the emergency recovery or download mode so i was forced to make a jig. i made the jig and it work putting into download mode but the problem from here is i cant get it to connect to my pc, when i plug it in i get a "USB Device Not Recognized" message and neither odin or heimdall will recognize it. i do not think its the cord because the cord im using now has been the cord i was using beforeand my phone was always recognized while i was using it. i hope someone may have some insight for me on this problem or i will be losing the nicest phone ive ever had that i only got to use for a few short weeks, someone pleas help.
Heimdall drivers / Samsung drivers conflict with each other. Try removing the Heimdall drivers and reinstalling the Captivate drivers (don't forget to reboot ur computer). Then right click and run as administrator the Odin 1st. Then connect ur usb to the back of ur computer if u r on a desktop or 1st port if u r on a laptop. then connect ur phone in download mode and see if Odin recognizes it.

I'd say that you shouldn't worry about doing master clear from Odin. If you can fully boot to whatever ROM you're using (even stock), there is an option in the settings menu to format your Internal SD card, which is the same thing as a master clear.
However, if you're just trying to flash stock, don't worry about the master clear at all. Just flash the stock rom and be on your way.
well the phone is completely bricked, before it was just repeatedly rebooting when i turned it on cause i failed to flash to the rom properly because im extremely new to the whole "phone modifying" thing and i was rushing which is not what your suppose to do cause these are very delicate processes, but now after plugging into the computer and attempting to master clear with odin when i turn it on i get the whole (cellphone Icon)..!..(computer icon) thing on my screen, i can still put it into dl mode from here with the jig i made but with my extreme noobness to this type of thing im not sure what to do still.. i dont want to mess up my phone any worse than i already have (if thats at all possible) and its just looking like i turned my phone into a paper weight at this point.

Don't panic - the phone--/!\--pc screen will work the same way as download mode.
Just start up odin, let it settle, hook up you phone with that screen on, and see if Odin sees it. If it does, try the flash again.
If not, go through the steps in my "Captivate Connection Issues and Download Mode Help" post that's in my signature.

You're not bricked. Master clear isn't going to fix your issue, and even if you wanted to run it, it only works with the phone booted which you obviously can't do. You're still all good.
1. Breathe.
2. Right click on Odin One Click and "Run as Administrator."
3. Put phone in download mode with your jig.
4. Plug the USB cord into the back of the computer (never a hub).
5. Wait for odin to recognize the phone (box turns yellow in Odin).
6. Wait a few more seconds to make sure nothing crashes.
7. Click start. Don't touch your phone, unplug it, run any other computer programs, or generally touch anything until the flash is complete. It will say "Done" and the phone will reboot.
okay i just want to flash back to stock if i can get it connected, if you can point me into the direction of the simplest way of doing this it would be greatly appreciated, i would love to learn how to do all of this fancy rom flashing stuff but bricking my phone is too much of a risk you know?

That's bad advice. And you have obviously never tried it.
First. You don't remove heimdall drivers. You just use the closed source Samsung installer
Second. As an open source community, with an open source system like android, recommending using Odin over heimdall is just plain wrong. Without open source you wouldn't even have an android. Open source supports open source. No one should support closed source
Third, all that is required is to use another USB port. The open source libusb drivers were made right. Samsung drivers blow away the entire system. Libusb is only installed on a single USB port. The rest still work with Odin.

Didn't know until this post...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19998299&postcount=115 that it was possible to use Odin and Heimdall without removing one or the other drivers. This was never stated in the Heimdall Thread in the Captivate Android Development Forum or the Heimdall website or the Read Me, that I have seen.
And I have even admitted that I have not tried Heimdall. -- Here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19995597&postcount=113
And I can only recommend what I know works. Odin is what I use and I have not had any problems occur that could not be resolved. And there are stated risks with both Odin and Heimdall. It is up to the individual user to choose which he uses and to understand that if they brick their phone, that is the risk that they were willing to take.
I use (support, if u must) Odin. I am not an "Ultra Open Source" guy as you appear to be (have u never used Odin?). I will keep using Odin and maybe one day give Heimdall a try, because I am not anti-Heimdall at all. Until then I will try to give the best advice I know to help others, just as I have received help from many.
If you're ultra-android, then you need to be ultra-open-source. Open Source development is what keeps our community alive. You have the right to request the source code for every ROM created on these forums because they are based on GPLV2 software.
Of course I've used Odin... I would never recommend it to anyone because it's not safe to use for a beginner. Heimdall One-Click has 6 points of safety over Odin.
Prove to me that Odin does what it's supposed to. Prove to me that Odin does not have a bot-net installed. Prove to me that Samsung can't just flip a switch and cause a brick on any given device when it's connected to Odin. Prove to me that any Odin One-Click is what it says it is without flashing it... You can prove all of these things with Heimdall.
Here's the source tree for Heimdall One-Click, One-Click UnBrick, and Heimdall One-Click Packager http://heimdall-one-click.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ You can inspect the code for malicious content. On top of that, a finished One-Click is in an executable JAR format. This means it can be unzipped and each file can be inspected for malicious content and/or virus scanning.
Recommending Odin is not only against the moral fabric of this community, it's also risky. I don't know of a single brick that Heimdall One-Click has caused.... However people make a full-time job out of recovering bricks caused by Odin.
Here you go.. use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172 Choose if you want rooted or non-rooted.

[Q] Not recognized in Download Mode

Had I not been dumb ol' Curious George and flashed the wrong backup kernel with SGS Kernel Flasher, I would not be in this mess. The phone is stuck on a loop at the AT&T logo. I can't get into recovery, but I can get into Download mode just fine using power+volume down. I have searched the forums, and tried everything suggested and everything I can think of, and my last resort was to start a new thread. I've tried on four different computers, a Vista, an XP, and two Windows 7 machines, all USB ports, none of which have worked. I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. I've gotten it to where it will recognize as mass storage if I plug it in while it is looping. It even installs all Samsung/Android USB drivers. But I can't access the mass storage, it just tells me to insert a disk into drive X. And once I boot into Download mode, it's an Unknown device. And since Windows will not recognize it, Odin can't see it. So my poor Captivate's been collecting dust for at least a week now while I've been using my old phone. At this point I'm pretty desperate and any help would be appreciated.
I'll ask the dumb question: have you tried heimdall? If not, gone it a try.
You may also want to try heimdall from a Linux live usb environment.
Had the same issues with my phone. Turned out to be a bad cable got a new one and it worked first try

Sorry, forgot to mention that the cable is not the problem as I have tried a different cable with the same results. And also used my cable with a different phone and that worked perfectly.
As for Heimdall, I'll download and try it as soon as I can, but since the computer itself can't recognize the phone, won't Heimdall not be able to pick it up either?
Last resort, Think about applying the unbrickable mod or have Mobile Tech Videos JTAG it. The unbrickable mod is very cheap, and relativly easy if you have knowledge of soldering. JTAG from Mobile Tech Videos is 40$ USD, but they can get your phone back to you in as little as 5 days from the day you sent your phone out. both are good options, if you are unable to get download mode working.
Also try this if you have any luck. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257434 (Just side load ubuntu on your windows / mac if needed)
If someone could help me as well. I have tried everything. Odin will not recognize my phone. Heimdall does work!!! I can flash anything with Heimdall. But I need Odin for the ROM I want.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1486344
I have tried everything including a "commercial" jig to boot to download mode. Still no go!!!
Ummm Why do you need Odin instead of heimdall?
Alright well I downloaded Heimdall but I can't install the drivers because the phone shows up as an Unknown Device in Zadig.
This is list that Zadig found:
Unknown Device
USB Composite Device (Composite Parent)
USB Human Interface Device (Interface 0)
USB Human Interface Device (Interface 1)
Pretty sure its usb composite device
It's the Unknown Device. And the USB Composite Parent shows up even when the phone's not connected.
Anymore suggestions? Or if I can't, anyone I can send it to?
Did you find a solution?
I've got the same problem...did you find a solution?

[Q] Bricked Captivate -- Unique Situation?

I've flashed 6-8 ROMS on a couple different phones, so not a total noob, but I bow to the vastly superior knowledge here:
My Captivate was running CM7.1 stable from October with no further mods since. I hadn't flashed anything or really messed with the phone in awhile. I was just using the same phone in the same config I had been for 6 months.
A few days ago, CM7 started to force close all my programs. Annoying, but not a problem that rebooting wouldn't probably fix. Rebooted into bootloop (skater logo). 3 Button didn't put me into CWM Recovery, nor would any button combos get me to download mode.
Homemade a jig and got the phone into Download mode, with Odin One Click up and ready to flash to stock. Odin read the phone and I started the flash, but it hung at DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET for a couple hours. I checked on this forum to see what was next. All the previous posts just said to pull battery, re-jig, and start again.
This time, I didn't get the skater, I got the comp!phone. All button & USB combos I've read here bring me comp!phone (even the "hold until two blank screens" one). My PC won't recognize the phone now (so neither will Odin or Heimdall), even after I've reinstalled the Samsung drivers. I've read here that you can flash from the comp!phone screen, but the PC has to see your phone first, obviously.
So I guess I want to know how screwed I am. Magic tips on a easy fix would be just outstanding, too! Is the fact that I wasn't flashing or anything when it bombed interesting to anyone? Thanks in advance...
not sure it's identical but this worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15330252#post15330252

Zadig won't load drivers for Heimdall 1-click
I'd tried Heimdall 1-Click Unbrick, but the problem again seems to be with the phone not being recognized. Unbrick runs, fails, and asks if the phone is plugged in.
It refers me to the Resolution Center, where Zadig tries to load the driver, for Captivate, but can't. Zadig provides a dropdown list of devices (my cam, printer, mass storage devices, wireless mouse/keyboard etc.), but the phone isn't listed, and I've tried every USB port. Which is too bad, because that seems like a great tool.

If you are still stuck...
Did you actually load a full version of Heimdall? Once I used unbrick as a mini-program. Another time I had to install a full version on my computer in order to get my phone and computer to communicate (that may be the missing driver step).
I know you have probably already done so but search the threads for AdamOutler and his work with Heimdall.
If you're using windows, windows update might be installing the drivers automatically. You might want to disable this feature, uninstall the current drivers and install new ones.
You can also try another pc that doesn't have any installed drivers - just to make sure...

Did you try manually installing the Samsung/Google usb drivers ? That's the usual culprit since stock are Samsung drivers and roms ( if its Aosp/Cyanogen) the Google drivers prime in that case.
Nearly Identical Problem
I've got the same problem with my Captivate...tried everything I've found in the forums but nothing works.
Background:
I had connection issues before trying to flash, but thought it was a driver issue with my Windows 7 machine. Which is why I had loaded the file onto the SD card when I attempted to upgrade to ICS. During the flash the phone hung and I eventually removed the plug and battery to see if I could reboot. I can get up to the Galaxy S I9000 screen, or the "Downloading..." screen, but I cannot get to the recovery menu or past the initial boot screen. My wife's captivate (same batch) IS recognized by the computer in "download mode" and in the USB transfer mode.
Attempts:
- Installed/uninstalled Kies many times
- Bought and tried a new data cable
- Installed/uninstalled the Galaxy S driver and the Captivate driver many times
- Tried Zadig, Odin, Heimdale, and Adb
- Used programs to remove USB devices and clean registry
- Installed Linux and tried within that OS
- Re-installed Windows 7
- Tried most of the above on my Windows XP system
Has anyone been successful in getting the computer to recognize a Captivate in this circumstance?

If all else fails...
I managed to brick my Captivate trying to get MUIU off my phone and flash back to Cognition. After many frustrating hours, I contacted Josh at mobiletechvideos.com. He fixed my phone and upgraded me to ICS for $50.00. I mailed my phone to him on a Thursday and received it back the following Friday.
