[Q] Captivate Black Screen Brick - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I've recently come across some trouble with my friend's captivate...(I, myself, own a Vibrant and have been an active flasher for the 2 years I've had it)
I was trying to get gingerbread bootloaders when I realized I was not on a stock 2.1/2.2 rom(I was on a 4.0 rom) and it ended up bricking my phone.
Fortunately I could still enter download mode and I then proceeded to odin back to stock JF6 firmware when I found myself waiting over an hour for the process to complete(the bar did not move at all on odin), so I decided to pull the plug and that's where everything went wrong. I've tried entering download mode but absolutely nothing happens.
TL;DR Version: Cannot enter download mode, complete black screen(No phone icon, no code, nothing)
I was wondering what the Captivate community suggests what I should...
Should I perhaps stop by Radioshack tomorrow and try this cheap jig process?

I would appreciate anything to get this device back to life right, thank you all for your time.

If u do have some signs of life, like when u plug it into a wall charger, then a Jig should work. But if no signs of life, then it probably is a hard brick. And if so, then check out mobiletechvideos.com for the repair.

[Q] Help! I don't know what I did to my phone! Can anybody help me?

I've been browsing for a while all over google and this site and still can't find anything that can help me so I'm asking.
I'm a basic Captivate user with no experience with flashing and rooting, but I saw Serendipity7 and thought the instructions were simple enough to follow on the weebly site. I downloaded the ROM files and the Installation files and extracted them. I followed the instructions perfectly by installing the drivers for my phone, opening Odin3 1.7, selecting the PDA, PHONE, CSC and PIT files then put my phone in download mode. I waited for the ID:COM to pop up then hit start. The blue bar on my phone and the one in Odin started working for about 30 seconds to a minute, not even the first box was done, then my phones screen turned straight blue, and Odin3 said it failed. The popup in the corner of the computer screen then said that my phone is no recognized for some reason.
Now my phone opens to the boot screen that says
"GALAXY S
gt-i9000
SAMSUNG"
and it just sits there. I can't get into download mode, and when I plug it to charge the screen with the battery level freezes and sits there.
Can somebody help me? I am a serious noob here that assumed simple directions were easy to follow (who knew they weren't?).
Thanks a million
Looks like Odin failed(again) you need to try to get into download mode again. Might need a jig.don't ask me about the jig tho cause i never had to use one. And I got mine when it came out.

That happened to me once after flashing Firefly. Because we had a postal strike at the time I couldn't order one but I followed this guide and made my own and it worked perfectly. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
Yea, just try to reflash. There are 3 ways to get into download mode again. See this post. Number 3 always worked for me the best.

If you keep having problems with Odin, try Hemidell.

You have I9000 bootloaders pull the battery reinsert and download mode should be volume down and power no usb cable insertion needed...
Yea you're definitely gonna be able to fix that quickly. Redo flash get into download mode either holding down volume down and inserting usb or hold down and hit power.

Were the GB bootloaders even installed?

Thanks everyone who helped out, one thing tho...
None of the key combos are working for me so I'm just gonna us the jig fix to get into download. I know I need to use a 300k ohm resistor but does it matter if I use a 1%, 2% or a 5% resistor?
Thanks again
^ I've used 1/4 watt 5% tolerance with success.

Captivate is un-responsive

Hello All,
I have tried to update my captivate on gingerbread via this guide.
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-3-gingerbread-firmware-on-samsung-captivate/
All is going well and odin was updating the firmware then suddenly my phone screen goes white and odin is stucked at the progress. After waiting 20 mins I uplugged the phone and after that my phone is not turning on nothing is happening and its seems like its dead. Any solution or help in this ?
Thanks in advance.
Imran
Make a jig using this guide. It's not exactly easy but it should get you into download mode again so that you can reflash the stock firmware and start over.
will this work ?
as some told me to buy this from http://usbjig.com/ but they stated on the website " As long as there is something on the screen, the jig should work for you. " and I contact that guy and he said me that it will not work for you as my phone is not giving any response.
if I understand this correctly, if your phone stopped responding while odin was flashing the bootloader files, your phone is likely dead in the water. If it is, then a jig will not help.
Just a question did you try pulling the battery, then try again. I was flashing kf1 one time and it said completed successfully but it was an all blank screen luckily it was dark and there was just 1 tiny pixel lit up still pulled battery inserted battery held vol+ and vol- inserted usb and odin detected.

Interesting Problem with Cappy

I've Had my cappy for something over a year and up until i finally got a working jig it was out of commision for about a month, Then all was saved with the jig and i reflashed stock and started from scratch trying new roms, Then, when trying to go from stock to apex using their own odin flashers, Then when it went back into recovery i hit reboot to begin using CWM. Then all of a sudden, The Gingerbread version of the softbrick screen comes up, Phone----!-----Computer. No worries i have my jig, then when i remove the battery, wait and put the jig back in . . . the phone just shows me a bricked screen again, with a jig i know worked. What have i done?

If by "bricked screen" you mean the Phone--!--Computer screen, you should be able flash back from that screen. In theory, ODIN should recognize your phone at that screen in a manner similar to the way it recognizes it at the normal download mode screen.
As long as you see the computer/phone symbol you should be able to get it reflashed with the J6 Oneclick. If it never appears in ODIN try all of your USB ports. Odin only sees my phone on the two rear ports, go figure.
As far as getting the yellow download screen goes you might consider some other key combos before you declare it non-functioning. Did you flash it back to stock J6? If so, did the 3-button stop working? That may be your issue. Also, you may have put boot loaders on it from another device such as an I9000 and changed the key combo while flashing another ROM. Try battery pull/replace with vol up and USB, vol down and usb, both up/down with USB and see if any of those work.

Might be Bricked. NEED HELP!

Ok I did something stupid with my Galaxy S. I didn't pay attention to the firmware I was downloading i did a search for orange branded i9000 Firmware, and was downloaded from a site. Legit firmware and all. So I went to flash with odin like I have done lots of times. Came up fail, so I figured something happened during transfer, so restarted it back into download mode and reflashed again. FAIL again. Restarted and it would not turn back on. The unfortunate to all this is, the firmware after looking in horror at my galaxy s and looking back at the screen said I9100 above and I did not see that at all.
Sooo even with a USB jig this will not show a download menu, no recovery mode, no screen when plugged into charger. Anyone have any tips before I attempt the unbrickable mod?
post you question on darky rom forum they might b able to help
If even the Jig does not work i would try the unbricablemod. I dont't know an other solution to revive your phone than the UnbrickableMod if your phone doesn't boot into the Downloadmode with a Jig. So you have nothing to loose just try this Mod.(it could be your last hope to rescue the phone without sending the phone to Samsung) I didn't try it yet because i ever could revive my phone with the Jig but I've read some reports in a german forum and the users there are reporting that the Mod does rescue the phone even if the Jig doesn't boot your phone in Downloadmode.
You can find the unbricablemod i'm talking about here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310 It's called "one click-unbrick". Just follow the given instructions and your phone schould work as before
Is your phone really bricked?
Is your phone bricked, or is it stuck at boot???
Normally, if a phone gets bricked, you see the screen of death: a phone logo and a computer logo, with an exclamation mark in between the two...
By the description, it looks like your phone is not able to boot, and is stuck at the screen, where it says: i9000
try putting it in downloading mode, and use odin to go back to stock firmware....
If you can't even turn on your phone, maybe your battery is flat after all that flashing

^^^ That may be the case, try to get another battery or chargning this batter outside the phone (wire to to a 5v source).
Sidenote: I think that download mode draws power from the usb (the phone will stay on even if the battery is removed [at-least mine does])
If the jig does not work then you probably flashed the bootloader or something...which is bad, in that case, unbrickable mod may be your only hope.
I revived it with just the software version of the unbrickable tool. Only have like 2 seconds to do it in linux when you connect the phone, but it put it into a white screen and I flashed with heimdall and I am back up and running. Thank you all!
so you flashed a stable ?
Yep I posted stable. It's weird because if your device shows up in windows some weird device you only have have a couple seconds in linux to make it flip into download, but its doable and I didn't have to hardware mod anything. Back to a perfectly working Galaxy S
Good for you !
You did it well, nice one! ;-)
I was to about to ask you to check your battery but glad you fixed it

[Q] Help Samsung Galaxy S i897

Well I had a problem, root days ago my Samsung Galaxy i897 (AT & T) Android 2.3.5 The root am not perfect, but after a few days stopped working. Try re-do the root and the installation stopped I had to remove the battery and slide back in the surprise was that the phone was with the yellow triangle, buy a USB JIG which is not served by the version of "boot loader" had to put oldest one ... I did then the Bootloader Changing the phone does not start does absolutely nothing Any help?
PD Sorry my bad English, Use Google Translate
If u have absolutely no signs of life, like when u plug it up to charge, etc., then u have hard bricked it and it can only be brought back to life through j-tag or unbrickable mod.
If u do have signs of life and you can get into download mode then you can flash a Stock Firmware (i897ucKK4 is the latest official release). If that works to get you up and going, you can use the [Utility] KK4 Easy Root by Red_81to get Root.

The cell phone does nothing, and to change the boot (that was what caused the problem) but to give the light button several hours after the battery gets hot (as if turned on) but the pc does not recognize it by placing the USB mode and also download anything served
PS So the solution would be a brick Full? :/
The solution or fix is in my previous post.
The problem seems to have been a bootloader flash gone bad. Flashing Bootloaders on the Captivate is one of the few real risky things to flash.
Do you recall what you flashed before the phone messed up ?? What bootloader or ??

re
I do remember what happened before does not turn or do anything, had loaded several roms before, but decided to charge a short while installing the installation, to switch it appeared to me the typical yellow triangle, buy a USB JIG which is not served by the the android version (2.3.5) the only solution that worked for the JIG was loading a bootloader older, oldest Download a bootloader that according served, connect the phone Odin opened the PDA and place it in load bootLoader, the cell is turn off (I had to reboot) and there did not catch more bone turn give the button and nothing happens the screen goes black, I can not enter download mode because it obviously will not start, sorry for my low English ,to connect the usb the pc does not recognize it does not leave any warning or anything like that
Not sure why the Jig did not work, even with i897uckk4 android 2.3.5 ??
Anyway, sorry....it does sound like it is hard bricked. So like I said before, the only fix would be J-tag and/or Unbrickable Mod.
Not sure where you are located, but if in the U.S. you could contact mobiletechvideos.com for repair. If your not in the U.S. then i don't know...
