Can only roms change DPI, or can this be done through the kernel as well?
Does increasing DPI make for a slower rom? Seems to be that increasing resolution would put more strain on the CPU/chip ... no?
Which DPI increasing rom would you recommend?
All responses appreciated!
Dpi is changed by editing the build. Prop file which is basically an ini file. It doesn't make any impact on rom speed, but some roms such as ics stock do not support <213 (tablet mode). It has nothing to do with kernel. You need to be rooted to adjust build. Prop.
If you're on stock, try 240 to start, quite nice. There are some Touchwizz apps that need adjusting for lower dpi such as dialler and launcher pages.

I'm currently on stock ICS, rooted, running speedmod kernel. I'll look into editing the Prop file. Thanks!
It's in root/system
Save a backup just in case, use root explorer

Well I took the lazy way and downloaded a DPI changer from the market, and ... it froze my phone at the loading screen. Nice. Had to revert to nandroid backup.
Any idea why changing DPI would freeze my phone?

Rom Toolbox is the only app for changing DPI successfully. All others will leave you in bootloops.
I think it's best you edit the file yourself and not an app... It happened to mee too a few times while using an app. Never had a freeze by editing the file it self.
but the market do give problems for me... can't download lots of apps or updates. If something know a way to fix it for good pls say so... couldn't find something that worked for me.

240. But from reading this thread and others I see that using DPI changers from the market is a bad idea. Lots of boot loops. Why the hell they would have the apks on the market in the first place if they don't work (and could lock your phone if you have no backup) is a mystery to me.
Oh well. I will take your advice and the advice of many here and try it manually.
EDIT: Okay. Used Root Explorer and changed DPI to 240 myself. Booted fine. But I can't really say I can see that much of a difference ... think I'll try going just a bit lower.
Use density changer from Play. No bootloops, Play Store is fine. Running ICS stock here. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tYXJ1dGlhbi5kcGljaGFuZ2VyIl0.

In short. No.
Unless you can get into recovery and use adb to push a new build.prop to the phone

Just reflash your Rom with no wipes, and all your apps and data will remain intact.
Hi, i have done exactly the same thing, did you sort this ?
how exactly do you flash the same rom ?

Using pc odin to flash, get roms off Dr ketans thread.

or use romtoolbox and edit build prop. Change everywhere density is mentioned (1or2 places) back to 320, save and reboot.

Do you agree with me?
I want to root my Samsung Galaxy Note. This way I can download the keyboard changer app and have Swype set as my portrait keyboard and the split layout from Thumb Keyboard. I also want to change my DPI so that I can run Go Launcher HD. What is the easiest way to root my device running stock Android 4.0.4 without bricking or damaging my device?

Thanks. Can I ask how to get into and use the recovery mode needed to flash the root zip? Also will this cause the yellow triangle or any other potential problems I should know about and will it void any warranty I have?
Sent from my GT-N7000
Also, won't that method install BusyBox onto my device? What does that do as someone has said that it can cause problems?
Sent from my GT-N7000
Use second link on my signature
Use vol up + home + power to enter recovery mod
Super su flashing give u just supersu, not all appl which needs root still work
You need to flash busybox for that.
There is full set of guide.

So I need BusyBox? Okay. Will rooting my device void my warranty or possibly cause damage? Also, does anyone here have a recommended DPI for the Note. I want to be able to run Go Launcher HD. I also want to use two different keyboards for landscape and portrait.

yep if you bring routed phone in warrantee is void, most cases. You can unroot and then warrantee is not void.
DPI is dependant on rom and personal preferences. On stock, everything works at 240, except some updates and availability of apps. The stock dialer is cut off, so recommended is to use third party dialer. If you plan to use third party dialer you can go as low as to 220 but even more apps are unavailable and updates also.
Best tot test which is to your liking.
Paranoid Android has good per app dpi settings. CM9/10 like touchwiz officially dont support changing dpi, its still possible thought. AOKP is pretty good at all dpi's.
edit: if the doctor says you need it, you do. lol

Hey peeps,
I would like to know if the lockscreen can be themed.
It's lookin really nasty on a higher display resolution.
I want to try it myself but should I even start? Because I can't install it through cmw recovery. This official Rom doesn't allow cmw. And does anyone know which file I should change. Never done anything with theming before. I already got the images from the framework file.
Added a screenshot to make my story/question more clear.

You can still install it by pushing it via adb, or copying the file using a root file explorer. But be careful, cause if you brick your device, you ll have to completely reinstall the ROM, or at least, reflash, reroot and reinstall the rest with Titanium

I know I saw this somewhere before but can't seem to find it again.
Currently running RootBox JB 4.1.2 build 2 on my Galaxy Exhibit, with the ParanoidSettings.apk loadad. Unfortunately, seems I can't set it up to do anything but pure stock UI settings (no Hybrid at all) and keep the DPI set to 240. Anything else and some of the apps I ahve installed are not listed as compatible in the play store (examples are Bitcare and BitcoinSpinner).
Is there a multi-DPI GAPPS available somewhere I can load instead of the one I have? Would much rather run my UI at about 220 DPI as I like that layout better.
Finally remembered where I saw something about this, from the updater in Slimbean when I had it loaded. I downloaded the multi-DPI Play zip from the Slimbean.net site and extracted the two APK files from it. Anyone know if they will work with RootBox, or are they special Slimbean-only files?

Yeah, been thinking about doing that. Keep seeing issues with RootBox on my phone and having to fix things. Seems to stay stable so long as I'm not fiddling with it.
Well, that didn't work.
But, I did get it to work. I quit trying to use the Paranoid settings app and went back through resetting the device dpi to defaults under ROM Control. After that I changed dpi to 220 on the last option in there and I can still see all my apps.
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda app-developers app
Spoke too soon. Even that didn't work.
So, anyone have an idea how to fix the Play Store dpi issue on the RootBox ROM?
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda app-developers app
Change DPI to 240 or Google multi-dpi playstore
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda premium
Well, I did Google it. Asked in here because I couldn't find anything specific to RootBox. Also lack the tools to "roll my own" apk files for this. I was hoping someone would know of a specific download I could get that would work on RootBox.
I think part of the problem is the files on RootBox. When I put the modified apks in from the one for Slimbean, I noticed vending.apk was not in /system/apps. There is an apk in /data/apps that is named similarly. Could that be why it doesn't work?
Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda app-developers app
Well, I went back to Slimbean anyway. The multi dpi play store works fine with it.
