stock android UI + jellybean leak? - Motorola Atrix HD

Hey guys,
I should be getting an Atrix HD tomorrow and I'm trying to get everything I could want to know squared away beforehand so I don't have to waste any time once I get it The Moto UI isn't very different from stock at all but I am coming from the Atrix 4G where I have been happily flashing tons of Rom's, all of which are stock android interface. I am quite fond of the stock android interface and can't stand how the phone manufacturers skin it at all.
Anyone with similar feelings know some good ways to make it even more stock appearing? Or how does the jellybean leak compared to the android stock and the Motorola ICS UI?

Is pretty close to vanilla. Until a cm or aosp ROM drops that's about it.

The stock launcher for the Atrix HD is very nice and the only one that supports the circles widget. If you're looking for something closer to stock ICS / jellybean and are willing to give up circles, give Holo Launcher HD a shot. Even the free version has most of what Nova and Apex provide, combined, and the paid version offers total customization.

SenseUI or Gingerbread?

Which GUI do you like or use more?
No Sense here...
I can never make my mind up. i like the stock Gingerbread, its simple and quick, where as the Sense can sometimes cause a bit of lack with the clock changing or the widgets being so big. But at the same time i miss the sense and its integration with the whole system. The dialer, phonebook etc looks so much nicer.
atm im using the RCMix HD rom, which is pretty damn quick and has sense. so im happy for now. may change my mind in a month or two.
Gingerbread for me. Although I do like a bit of the original HTC flip clock from time to time, especially the one with the flip animation
I can't decide which look I like more. I like the functionality of Sense UI and how everything ties together, But I like the speed of Gingerbread.
I like the Gingerbread UI. It feels like to the point, without the frills and hassles.

I agree. I just flashed a Desire-HD rom , and tried it for a bit. But, I quickly became bored with it fast...
gingerbread all the way
I just go between RCSDSmix Sense/MIUI-Dev/CM Nightlies
Usually just flash whichever has latest update and move to new one when it updates
It's like which color of shirt do I wear today
The advantage of root
I'm a little of both.
I only really like the weather unlock animations, weather app and new 3.0 lockscreen from Sense. Besides that, I like the simplicity and look of stock gingerbread
you can find a replacement theme, alternate apps and widgets..
although you wont ever get that tight sense ui integration
but sense roms are very plain.. theres things i miss about it here and there but not as much as i enjoy playing around with cyanogenmod roms and customizing every little bit of it
I'm personally torn between the two, but that's the nice thing about the Nexus One (especially when the bootloader has been unlocked).
I'm a fan of Sense, and it's the only UI I like. There's just something about it, and I think a few of you touch upon some of the reasons why I like it. I don't know if it's because it makes the phone seem more user-friendly, but I know it's something. It just feels solid. As far as functionality goes, it makes the phone feel like it has a fully-functioning OS. There are just so many little unique customizations that make the phone more user-friendly.
On the other hand, I'm a big fan of CM7. Quite possibly the best iteration of Gingerbread on the streets. The speed of Gingerbread, especially in CM7, is mind-blowing (especially when you think how far things have come since the early days of Eclair in January 2010). I sometimes feel "homesick" when I'm using a Sense ROM.
I think it boils down to what you want out of your ROM. Sense is rigid. Vanilla Gingerbread allows you to make things how you want it. I will say this though: the stock camera app sucks. The Sense camera is tons better.
Just my 2 cents.
There is no properly functional Sense ROM for Nexus for at least a year.
UI- and usability-wise, since DesireHD's Froyo versions Sense beats both stock Gingerbread and CM7 by a large margin. But unfortunately it can only be seen on Desire, since Nexus doesn't have proper functionality in those ROMs.
I think SenseUI is the better one.
ROM flasher... i flash wherever i want RCADSmix SENSE > CM7 > MIUI .... which one suit the mood..
The gingerbread interface is better Pure android experience!

The newest ADW EX has cured my impatience for ICS(4.0)

Aside from being gorgeous and buttery smooth on my Nexus S 4G... and aside from being ridiculously customizable as it always has been... I just did a full wipe and installed it after not using it for a while.
Running a completely stock 2.3.7 rooted ROM because I'm just sick of stability issues with ICS ROMS (big loves to the brilliant devs that are working on them, btw... I know the stability problems aren't their fault... Google needs to hurry the f**k up!).
Back to my point... they've built in some of features that the ICS launcher has. Like:
dropping icons from your homescreens on top of each other to automatically bundle them into an auto-sized folder.
automatically adjusting the scale and position of the icons on the dock (which you can just drag and drop stuff off of)
Give it a whirl! This is Android perfection right here! I was thinking about getting a Galaxy S2 just for giggles but I've fallen in love with my phone again and saved myself $500
While I love ADW EX. Using ICS is just too good to go back. I don't know what stability issues you experienced, ICS has been wonderful for myself. Loving the browser and battery life. The overall feel of ICS is more fluid and just makes sense. Cut and paste is a great example.

Same here. I will never go back to GB and I dont think I will use a third-party launcher again (even having payed for adw ex and spb shell).

Terrible battery life on every ROM I've tried (oICS, CM9 Alphas, CM9 Kang, etc). And if it's not battery life, it's random reboots, launcher force-closes, screen flickering, slow or laggy homescreen or app drawer transitions, etc.
Yes, I've done full wipes. I even use that wipe script linked in the NS4G Dev section.
This is the smoothest, most stable Android experience I've ever had, right now... and I've had a Nexus One, EVO 4G, Epic 4G, and a couple other ghetto phones.
Well, I am running pete's "almost stock" rom and it is perfect, not a single issue.

Nope, gsm international version. But Pete's made a rom for NS4G too, have you tried it?
http://download.peteralfonso.com/crespo4g/rom
The 22/12 version (atleast the gsm one) is amazing.
I hate the new dock they put in ADW Ex, which sucks because I bought it a when it first came out and didn't have any big complaints, but the new dock is terrible imo.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm debating whether I should try it. I'm seriously considering just waiting until the official OTA comes out and something more stable and faster is cooked up by the CM team or someone else. I'm so tired of all the messing with backups, wiping, flashing, etc...

Funny... I feel the exact opposite. I hated how it used to be. Love it now that it's a wee bit more like ICS and just drag/drop.

OK, the official OTA was already released and this rom was cooked using it. Are you waiting for a new OTA, like 4.0.4?
My favorite combo is ADW Ex with sph33r's ICS v2. ADW makes ics that much better - I'm loving it. Everything is smooth as silk and configured exactly how I like it.

The official OTA for the GSM phone was released.
Not for the CDMA (Sprint).
am using BM's stock ICS + eugene's stock 3.0.13 kernel. battery and speed are great! no reboots, no FC's.
Used Adw a long time back. The thing I was most uncomfortable with was the single dock. Would have loved it had it included configurable no. of docks as with launcher pro or nova.
The problem I have with ICS & nova launcher is that some widgets (Scrollable News Widget to be precise) says that it's incompatible with launchers that do not support scrollable widgets ... although I know that many other widgets work well.

3.x and up has support for scrollable widgets, so dev's of those widgets you're talking about need to re-code them.
I used ADW ex prior to upgrading to a custom ICS ROM.
Few things; ADW in no way compares to the premium and smooth feel of legit ICS. ICS has so much more and is vastly improved. An earlier poster mentioned the new copy/paste. Aside from that we have the new tabs in the browser, better auto-correction, the kick ass multitasking/recent tab, the overall UI and so much more.
If you like the ability to change icons and notice there isn't much support for that in ICS try out Nova Launcher. It's beta 5 right now but it's awesome. You can change icons easily, and more. Not to mention the app drawer very closely resembles ICS which I love.
The only thing I feel ADW EX has that ICS (coupled with Nova Launcher on a Custom ROM) doesn't have is capacity of folders. The ICS folders can't fit all of my games so I have to use "alternative" folder apps which blows. Once they fix that ICS will win at life, 3 times over. Then CM9 will come out and make us **** ourselves in excitement XD!

Have you tried ADW with ICS? I was not at all impressed with the stock ics launcher, although it is quite a bit better than the gb launcher.
ADW mostly just adds to what ics provides and as far as I can tell, only the app drawer widget picker/market link are missing (I did not use those anyway).
I run vhgomez's ICS v1.2 with the latest ADW Ex and the App Widget Picker replacement apk. Friggin sweetness.

I just don't like it.... I prefer Nova Launcher with ICS. So much better IMO
Ya, I've been using the new adw for most of my ICS time, and it's been pretty smooth. There are 2 things tho that I like much better in the Stock ICS launcher (Trebuchet).
Most of my scrollable Widgets in ADW are messed up.. especially the native calendar and browser bookmark Widgets. It seems like ADW registers the downward motion as a gesture attempt.. even though none defined.
Second is folders in the bottom bar.. which I really like in ics launcher. Definitely gonna try Nova tonight tho.

Why are the ROMs so damn big?

Ok, this is a serious question guys.
I am coming from a HTC Inspire 4G, where a full ROM was under a hundred meg, why is it even with almost everything removed, ROMs for my beloved Note are over 300meg..?
Look forward to everyones answers!!
Cheers
FYI your Inspire's stock Sense ROM is over 350MB. Sense and TouchWiz are big ROMs with added features and so on. The ROMs under 100MB is CM7 and MIUI. Since we don't have these for the Note yet, we'll have to settle with TouchWiz ROMs for the time being.

I install Zeam straight away once I install a ROM, what are the features that TouchWiz offers?! I doubt I use any of them lol.
Totally forgot Inspire was sense I installed a clean ASOP rom as soon as I got it.
Probably been answered a hundreds time around here but I can't find anything for SGN, how do i build my own ROM a guide would be awesome, I'd really love to throw together an ASOP inspired ROM and try and get the size down and speed up!

They're not just the UI, it's also the apps.
Android itself doesn't support S-Pen in 2.3, so that's Samsung.
The calendar app - samsung
widgets - samsung
custom apps and UI (like rubberbanding effects, custom font setting, etc)
There are a lot of under the hood things that has been changed. Touchwiz is something essential for ANY ROM and it takes A LOT of work to remove it. I mean A LOT. Samsung designed it to be run with Touchwiz, so any dev. has to work a lot to get everything working fine without any touchwiz and that's a lot of work.
And the numbers of pixels of Note is 2.6 times of WVGA. So, all the graphic files for the UI will be larger too.

Think I figured out my issue with sense 3.6

It's themeing! Honestly I like the holo look of ics. I also like the textured look of sense. And it seems while sense 4 is just as intrusive as previous versions, they redid the graphics and tweaked in ics features to blend quite well with the holo elements in tact. However this isn't the case with 3.6. 3.6 really is just a tweaked 3.5 designed to work with ics. Problem is there are 2 themes present here. A lot of menus your seeing holo elements and but you still have textured borders of old sense everywhere in the ui. The result is a ui with a loss of identity. You can install custom skins that help but they still leave a lot of textured sense borders that can't be removed as the skins only go so deep.
I will say overall I like sense and buying an HTC phone I didn't expect AOSP. I think if they couldn't give us 4 than 3.6 should of at least been designed better to blend in with holo elements. And one thing I don't get about HTC is they always remove the overscroll effect. I'm going to root my phone soon and first order or business will be fixing the themeing. I dunno if ill put a custom Rom on yet just want more theming control to start. Imo I don't want a pure senseless Rom as I do like sense

Are you going to make a theme?
I dunno, it's one thing to root and tweak with the graphics, it's another to make a cwm theme. I'm not a developer... Yet

Nice wording man, I like the "yet" part... It's definitely an interesting community! Ever since I joined, I've installed Ubuntu on my Core i7 Dell laptop along with Android 4.0.1 on VirtualBox, I really hope to get involved in the dev community myself in the future.
Yeah I've been pressed for time but I've been wanting to learn how to develop for my HTC Flyer tablet and my Vivid. With the Flyer its creating a better stock launcher that interest me as with it being on honeycomb and support being cut off from htc, there aren't a whole lot of choices. For this phone its cleaning up the stock rom and allowing ics and Sense 3.6 to coexist in perfect harmony. No promises on anything yet

I don't consider my self a dev either...yet
But I do have some experience with the development on the Samsung infuse (which you can tell by my Sig)
I've been trying to mess with the stock rom for a while now with no luck...I just can't seem to get any apktool to work with stock ics of this device, and after a little research it seems sense 3.6 is the problem, but I have yet to find a solution
I've asked a few times for help on decompiling for the vivid but have gotten no response...I'm not trying to discourage you all i wanna get across is that if you have any success...please share the knowledge with me

Yeah htc makes someone nice devices but they aren't developer devices for sure. I'll let you know once I get involved in it what I can do might be why most flash the sense removed roms as its all or none.
Yeah overall I like sense 3.6 just hate the theme clashing. Good example is hitting the search button. All of a sudden your not using sense 3.6 anymore, your now using aosp android! I think I remember reading Google required a certain percentage of holo elements for market access, and I think htc kept that in mind in redesigning sense from the ground up with the one series. But when it came time to upgrade what they had they just basically ported 3.5 over and added a few ics features into the launcher. HTC claims that 4.0 is too different from 3.5 and earlier and previous users need familiarity but Imo if you've played with a one x its all pretty familiar. 3.6 overall was a bad call

My one major gripe with Sense is the lack of changing things. I'd like to be able to (without using LauncherPro) tell it "I want 5 columns, and 6 rows of icons, on top of the 5 at the bottom. (so a total of 7 rows of icons, 5 columns)"
It WORKS well, just see some photo's I've posted in recent days.

I hear ya, but thats all stock launchers including the google one. Sense 3.6 has some of the best customization for stock I've seen, but it still pales in comparison to say ADW EX, Go Launcher, or Apex.
alright...for the longest time ive been trying to use apktool with the "att stock ics for chefs or whatever" never had luck...today i decided to try apktool with an old download of 0.9 holics rom, to my surprise apktool works with it-i was able to install framework, decompile, recompile...it all worked!
so im wondering if maybe the stock ics wasnt properly deodexed, or maybe with holics rom something special was done? when i get the time im gonna try contacting bananacakes and see if maybe he can help me set up a stock base, or possibly use a stock base he may have laying around...ive tried making my own stock rom in the past from the RUU but got the same errors as the att stock rom for chefs...

[REQ] Port of LG Optimus L7 stock 4.1.2 rom to sgs?

while looking through the android development section for our galaxy s i have seen a lot of s3 and s4 themed roms based on stock android
but i occurs to that to get this ui while retaining a recent version of android would be to port the stock rom from the lg optimus l7
i personally think the Optimus ui is extremely similar to the touchwiz we love so much
i wish i had the ability to take on a project like this myself although i have very little knowledge on this and wouldent even know where to start.
i was hoping there maybe some developers out there who may be willing to take this on if there is enough interest.
thanks for any feed back in advance
