[Q] messed up colors, help :( - TouchPad Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My stock Touchpad has a weird color problem. Anytime there is some shading/gradient type effect, red/green/blue hues appear. Solid colors seem fine but when I try to watch something like a movie...every person looks like Obama's HOPE poster. Even the normal grey backgrounds of the UI/Cards look like they are running in some 8bit mode or something.
HP live chat previously ASSURED me it is not a hardware problem but rather a software problem. I have done all the updates/factory reset/etc. Nothing has improved. Has anyone seen this type of problem? Is there a 8bit color switch somewhere? Thanks for reading/any help!
I attached a tiny low res pic of the problem. The problem is pretty obvious

Does it work correctly in WebOS? That would tell us if it is a cm problem or a hardware problem. Boot over to WebOS and try watching a movie. I haven't heard of this being a cm problem.

It doesn't even have CM on it. I'm actually wondering if I flash android on it...it'll get fixed. Will give it a try when I have more time but might just try to call warranty on it. My warranty has passed 1 year but hopefully my credit card company should cover it. I'm thinking I should try that first before wasting time on flashing.
Such a weird problem that has stopped me from using/enjoying my TP

Its hard to even tell what the problem is in your picture. But is your screen discolored in that one spot or is the whole screen discolored? I've never heard of a software issue causing that. And if it was a software issue, running the webOS doctor should have fixed it. So if its still under warranty, i'd go that route first.

The issue is the entire screen. The picture is supposed to be mainly dark grey/grey/white. The blue/green tints pretty much appear wherever there is slight color gradients. Its quite obvious on non-solid colored UI and skin. It looks like basically watching a person while on acid.
Anyone know if its possible to have a faulty GPU or something on it and still boot up? The TP does feel sluggish in other aspects as well...open up just a few cards and it becomes pretty damn sluggish. Doesn't even have to be a web browser card...something simple like calculator can sometimes cause problems...

If its your whole screen, it could be that your screen is messed up. If you have the warranty still, I'd see if you can get it replaced.

[Q] blue artefacts / subpixels all over the screen

Hey!
I bought my galaxy 6 months ago. Not long after I noticed a minor issue with my AMOLED display. I could see blue "artefacts" in some bright areas of the screen from time to time. Nothing serious, just blue dots and stripes, subpixels. I even posted a picture of it on reddit (second attachment) more out of curiosity than anything but was later convinced it was probably a software issue. I did have some suspicions something might be wrong with my phone but it actually happened so rarely and the issue was so minor that I just got used to it because it didn't bother me that much.
I recently flashed dark core 2.2 along with rc6 and it got *significantly* worse. I could see blue subpixels all over the screen wherever there's bright white, generally on the lowest brightness setting. Now, I believed that the hardware got worse and it's time to ask for a replacement. So before doing so I obviously had to flash stock firmware and guess what - it all disappeared. So I flashed just the dark core again to go back to rc6 - and it was back again.
The thing is, I really love this ROM and I love the voodoo improvements that come with it. I don't think I can live without them any more. On the other hand, it might be difficult to convince people from samsung that there's actually something wrong with my phone - since it happens so rarely on stock ROM. And I think that this display defect is intensified by the screen improvements from voodoo/dark core.
My only idea is to somehow make it show up on stock ROM and send it to them just then. But is this even possible without rooting my phone? Does anyone has an idea why would these blue subpixels show up in white areas? Is it something they check with specialized equipment or do they boot the phone first to see what's wrong?
Anyway, guys if you could point me in the right direction or had any better ideas... Seriously, It would be helpful even if you said that I should just return my phone and hope for the best. I'm a student and I can't really afford to be charged for returning - what they think is - an operational phone
I attached two pictures
1. a picture of how my screen behaves after flashing the latest dark kernel
2. a picture of how my screen sometimes behave on stock kernels
I'd appreciate any help or advice

Sudden colour change for icons etc

I just experienced the oddest thing, which gave me a fright. I was messaging a friend when suddenly the predicted words and message "bubbles" changed from blue to pink. I had just installed the keyboard some hours ago and had been using it without any issues. Thinking that I might have accidentally changed the keyboard setting by tapping too quicly, I tried to change that but could not find any pink theme.
So I got out of messaging, and to my horror saw that all my icons had changed colour too, to fluorescent shades of pink, green and blue, where there should be colour. I believe there was greyscale such as white and black as well, but I reacted so quickly that I hardly saw that. Barely able to think from panic, I rebooted the phone, and all the colours went back to normal! So I quickly wiped my cache and dalvik and did my titanium and nandroid backup.
Could my poor Note be suffering from some kind of screen failure? I've read briefly of screens turning green, but mine did not, only the icons and "accents" got affected. Or could it be a virus that attacked my phone? I'd installed a handful of new apps today and have uninstalled them since the incident. I've run Lookout Mobile and ALYac but they didn't detect any threats. By the way, my battery was down to about 15 or less when that happened, though I've frequently used my phone in such conditions without any issues.
Any thoughts about what might have happened? I feel a bit unsettled and am wondering whether to flash back to stock without root, just in case the phone goes kaput and I can't turn it back on nor flash with Odin.
sounds like a software failure. It is likely just a random glitch, do not worry.
People do believe that all the software products work the same way every time they are run, but that is not so. Data in RAM itself is actually quite fragile (compared to something 'physical') due to the speed and optimisations made. Magnetic fields and cosmic rays will always have a tiny but random effect. When you are processing 3 billion instructions per second (as your phone is at max), that gives you al lot of opportunity for random stuff-ups.
i've also encounter the same thing like you do. i quickly click on the sleep button off and on back and the color back to normal. battery indicator shown me that my device was 51°C. btw my device was non-root and running stock rom LA1 at that moment. so i guess it must have been too hot and triggered the color changes.
Happened to me once though not really sure the steps I followed to make it happen. A reboot fixed it and I didn't bother much with it anymore.
Thanks for all the answers! It's reassuring as misery loves company. Not that I'm miserable anymore, but for a few seconds I was thinking of life without my Note, and it was quite unthinkable!
Anyway, I know there's no perfect device so I'm not too concerned, though a friend who heard my brief account today said it could be a video driver issue, whatever that means!

Screen washed out after playing video

Anybody else noticed that the screen is washed out/blown out sometimes after a video plays (mainly Netflix, maybe)? It seems to be a combination of increased brightness and decreased color saturation, making colors seem... well... washed out. It goes away after either shutting the screen off and on or switching to another app. I think. I haven't found the pattern yet.
I'm guessing it's Nvidia's Tegra 3 PRISM tech at play, and it's just not shutting off after the video app is closed. I'll expect a software fix at some point, but just want to see if anyone else is experiencing it.
Well son of a b... that is what is causing my washed out colors and gamma. I noticed it seemed to come and go. Unfortunately it never seems to completely clear up for me, even after going to other apps.
I tested this with the Transformers movie. After playing that a few seconds, I left and noticed the home screen looked really saturated, then went to the browser, and it was the same.
For me going to another app doesn't seem to clear it up, but it does clear up partially after a period of time. And maybe it might be my imagination, but it doesn't seem like it really ever goes back to normal until I reboot the tablet.
next to my work ipad.. the colors seem really blown out. =\ also there seems to be a video stutter / jittery issue during the panning effect. Played it side by side with my S3 and the s3 can render it just fine. What gives?
Haven't noticed anything like that after watching videos or movie on nexus 7. display looks great 24/7

No, I see it happen with YouTube and Netflix too. I was just trying to make a futile attempt to understand why this happens to some of us and not others. My guess though if you haven't seen it with other videos, the Transformer movie won't do it either.
I've noticed that it's most obvious on some screen elements, but not all. So, it's entirely possible, I think, for someone to be experiencing the effect and simply not noticing it.
I've noticed this as well quite annoying.

The after movie wash-out appearance was particularly noticeable when looking at small fonts on a white background. Such as this forum.
Yeah same for me! I'm on my 3rd nexus because of dust under the screen, I can't remember my previous 2 doing it. Will it be fixed by an up date doyou think? Or could it be hardware related?

I finished watching the transformers movie this morning. Looked great to me. I can't notice any washed out colours.
I just started getting the "whiteout" too. Not from anything in particular that I can tell, it happened twice coming out of sleep mode.
Anybody have a fix? Is it Hardware or Software related?
>Is it Hardware or Software related?
Take screen cap. If cap image is likewise washed out, it's not hardware. If cap image isn't washed out, then it's more complicated.

I tried it on all the same things you listed. Didn't notice nothing some of you described at all. Screen still looked sharp n crisp. Colors looked fine and not washed out.
Its more than likely the nvidia feature kicking in. Especially if you have brightness set up higher. Probably doing it to save battery life. I keep my brightness at 12% and its more than bright enough for me to see everything well. I heard the autobrightness likes to act up so THST could be am issue also if you have that on also. I never use autobrightness unless I take device outdoors.

Can you give me the quick answer on how to take a screen capture on the N7? Thanks!
Just took several screenshots and swiped between the screen that was normal screenshot and the faded screenshot and they both look the same for me, which is lovely with nice rich colours. If I stick transformers on for 20 sec its washed out when I exit, as soon as I turn the screen on and off its back to normal. I just think its a bug in the screen settings when exiting a move or game. Used to happen on my PC until I updated the driver.

You just hold the volume down button and the bower button, it will take a snapshotof the screen. I've tested it though, see my above post
I'm having the same issue too.
Happens when I watch a video on youtube, netflix or play movies. I use a brightness app to change the brightness levels and it returns to normal. I'm also getting the "screen flickering" issue described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740385
I really hope these issue with be fixed with an update. I'm new to android. Where's the best place to report these issues direct to Google/Asus?
>between the screen that was normal screenshot and the faded screenshot and they both look the same for me, which is lovely with nice rich colours
So it's probably hardware (display), or a combo of hardware/firmware.
Power-saving feature of Kai's PRISM display pertains to color saturation and brightness. As OP indicated, malfunction may be related to that. But it doesn't matter what the exact cause is.
It may or may not be fixable via firmware update. Suggest getting RMA process started, then sit on it for a few days to see if OTA fix happens. Don't wait beyond the return period. Make sure to ask for advance replacement if RMA.
>I just think its a bug in the screen settings when exiting a move or game.
If the issue was firmware-only, then it would happen to all units, not some. It's either HW, or HW+FW.
Edit: Suggest trying different movie players and different movies to find extent of problem.

So question for the community. If you're having issues with the "whiteout/washout", the ghosting and flickering... would you recommend getting a replacement or waiting for a driver / firmware update?

[Q] LG G Flex screen burn in...

Hello! I have somehow managed to get a reallllllly annyoing screen burn in on my G Flex. Its the status bar and another part under it that's maybe .7cm wide, going from side to side. It perfectly matches the blue Facebook "bar" thing and the Chrome webbrowser search field.
I wonder, how the hell could this happen? I know that it is an Oled display and that it risks getting a burn in, but I've never used it for an extended period of time, I just can't understand how it happend. All displaytypes can get burn-ins I've read, but they shouldn't get it from moderate use. Now is there any way to fix this? It i reaally annoying considering I payed alot of money for it. I have googled it and found nothing useful. Do you think it's possible to get a new device?
Cheers
Well i had a little at the the bottom i noticed and i turned the phone off for awhile and it got rid of it maybe you should try that and see if it works. Hope it helps burn in sucks.

Maybe it's just temporary image retention you see. Doesn't it go away after a little while? If you keep away from the home screen for a long time does the same burn-in still show?

It's definately not just temporarily, I've had it for maybe 2-3 weeks and not cared very much. Now though it starts to annoy me more and more.
I also shut off my phone every night for around 8 hours so, yeah, it's permanent... Could this just be a bad display as it is an early sample, or is this just how it is?

You shouldn't get permanent burn-in unless you use the mobile with maximum brightness all the time and letting it show static images most of the time. The screen is most sensitive to burn-in while it's new. You could try to exchange it if they accept it as a fault.
However you can also try to "wash" it out first. Put the phone on maximum brightness showing an 100% white screen. No statusbar or navbar just plain white all over the screen. Doing this for a few hours can get rid of burn-in.

That's the annoying part, I have owned alot of phones with displaytypes from S-AMOLED to LCD and so on, and NEVER had this problem before. This phone has only seen normal, regular use and I always take care of my phones.
And this wash out thing, is it safe to do? I've read that it isn't safe for OLED/AMOLED displays, it could be total bs though, as it came from other threads that i read.

Well nothing bad can really happen when you "wash" the screen that way. As long as you make sure ALL of the screen is white and have no statusbar or navbar present.
This technique is often used on Plasma TV's when they get burn-in. What happens is you "age" all of the pixels when doing this and sometimes it can get rid of burn-in. No garantuee for it though. But it never hurts to try. I've never heard that it's unsafe in any way. It's a normal thing to do.
This phone seems to have different screen revisions. I have two G-Flex at the moment and one of them is much more noticeably grainer in the texture even though they are on the same firmware. On one example I can hardly notice it if I don't look for it while the other one looks noisy as heck and I see it easily and can't ignore it. Really big difference between the two. The noisy one is also a LOT more prone to image retention. I will get rid of the one with the noisy screen for a good price and keep the good one only.

Ah, well I'm going to try that then! And btw, my statusbar has burned in, but not my navbar buttons... Kinda weird, huh?
And I think that I have the "bad" revision, as my screen is REALLY grainy at lower brightness and when displaying dark images. If this problem doesnt solve I'll try to send it in, and if they replace it I hope that I get a less grainy one, even though that I don't really care about that haha. I'll run in a couple of hours and come back with results!

I believe you have a defective display then. Even my worse panel does not suffer from permanent burn-in. It all goes away in seconds.
I've had this happen last night on my flex where I was watching a movie that was letterboxed, half way through and I had to reload the movie due to a bathroom break and noticed the letterboxing in Facebook. But as of today its gone.

I have horrible image retention on pretty bad on mine primarily the onscreen softkeys. When I go in a game after I've been browsing the web I can clearly see a line where the soft keys bar is and clearly make out all three buttons. It's horribly annoying and I'm wondering if it's a defective phone or is this just the crappy way the G FLEX is?

Huawei MATE 20 LITE screen flickering when notification(dropdown menu) is pulled down

Hello. I just bought a Huawei Mate 20 lite, and I immediately noticed that when the notification menu is pulled down, the background (the part of the screen that's visible under the menu, not the menu itself) is flickering. I tried lowering the resolution to HD+, down from FHD+ and the problem seems to disappear. Any ideas as to what that would be? If it is a hardware bug, I can return the phone and ask for another one, or maybe if there is a fix anyone knows of, and this little "bug" here doesn't turn into a bigger problem overtime, I can just apply that.
Thank you very much and have a nice evening.
The same happens to me and not only that. If i left the phone in the same screen for a few minutes and pull down the notification bar or any other dark (not black) screen the screen looks like is burned.
Hio, i have exactly the same, i don't know why they would do something like that but, i don't think its some hardware damage or unwanted either since on other backgrounds if you want so, or other screens it doesn't happen for me, as far as i can see only happens on home screen etc... Also a friend from me has exactly the same with different firmware... Don't know about the burned looking part from 2nd post, definitely don't have that!
Greetings

Looks like a dynamic contrast issue to me. Go to settings, display, color mode and pick normal. That might fix it.

Hello friend, I tried what you recommended, but to no avail. My biggest concern is whether this might be a hardware issue, or it's most certainly a software one - if it's a software issue i wouldn't be bothered at all and i'd just wait for an update or even put a pure android on it, but if it is indeed a hardware issue, i need to know so I can return the phone.

Try it out?
Install a different firmware, roll back to the oldest firmware or something like that. Change your backgrounds, try it out with different apps, play around with screen testing apps. Even if someone here has a similar problem and it's hardware related, yours might still be something different. It's hard to tell over a forum.
Good luck with "pure Android" though, this phone will cost you quite some bucks to just get unlocked and there's merely any support for AOSP ROMs (maybe not even the littlest bit, I didn't look at OpenKirin yet since the phone is so expensive to unlock lol)

Does installing new firmware (I'm currently using EMUI 8.something) v oid warranty? I still haven't gotten the official update to 9 and I'm thinking of just installing it manually myself.
