lol.
That is impossible. They have thousands of orders that have never been shipped and they have a huge back-order list. To top it off UPS whom we assume is handling all of the logistics is ***king up. The chances they will get their current orders out this week are incredibly low, to add more orders to it is not happening.

I seriously hope its true. I REALLY want to get mine for Christmas. I'm seeing a second chance if this is true.

No one else credible is reporting this.
A story this big would definitely be picked up by the more well known android news orgs. I'm not buying it.
That said, it would behoove Google to get something going soon, so as not to miss the holiday season.
Personally I'm already looking at the SGS3, or the Note II.

Smells like bull****

Seems like bs to me. If this was the case surely they would let us all know. I don't believe it.

No one with half a brain "assumes" that UPS is part of the Nexus 4 roll out fiasco. UPS is delivering the devices, but I'd bet the farm, that they aren't the cause of any of this the issues in getting phones in the hands of buyers.

LOL agreed. "Play Store Reps" have been the primary source of mis-information so far.

lol agreed but the article also states confirmed by "play store manager" but who knows..if play store reps dont know better..then who does??

If this was being caused by ups, ups would have informed us. They site are not to blame at all.

Ummm, I think that's dependent on the country you're in. UPS is very accurate in Canada, never had an issue with them before.

UPS is the one who is managing the warehouse that the items are being shipped from. That is why people are assuming they have something to do with this. That and its not out of the ordinary for UPS to work with a different system then FIFO to reduce cost and increase effectiveness.

Thanksgiving 2013?

Ups manages their warehouse? Most Likely they just send trucks..
I really don't think ups is the problem. I asked my brother about this. He is a manager at ups and has been there for over 15 years. He said he has heard nothing about any issues anywhere. He would tell me if he hears anything.
He manages logistics, etc so I am sure he would be able to find out if there was a major problem.
The fault lies with Google. All the double orders, auto page refreshers, etc.. This is why they got messed up but I still don't understand how they could run out of stock so fast unless they were planning it by not having much on hand.

Google does not sell nearly enough devices to warrant having their own warehouse. At the amount of devices that they are selling they have to outsource to a different company. In this case we can easily assume based from where they are shipping from Kentucky where UPS has a very large warehouse for distribution. The fact that UPS was the only shipping option and that google is clearly not working with Amazon, Newegg, Walmart or another large company leaves the most logical guess that it is UPS.

They do not sell enough devices to warrant the expenses of a in house where house. Having a warehouse is not cheap, and its some thing you normally have to go big or not at all.

Seriously pee'd off

If people receive their nexus 7 before me, I pre'd on the 28th two weeks ago, I'll be cancelling my order with Google and purchasing from somewhere else. Not only did I/we pay more for pre order ( extra for shipping) were getting them after other people - yeah right Google, ebuyer can have my money!

When you are among the first to order from the only place selling said device at said time, are you not expecting to be getting it before anyone else? When people complained about the shipping cost everyone said "well hey thats what you pay to get it before everyone else" and now those same people are arguing that their own logic doesnt make sense .Not going after you or your post here just using it as a jump off point.
People will get it a day or two before you, not weeks earlier. i can't believe someone would throw such a temper tantrum over something so ridiculous.
It could be worse. At least Google is allowing some choice for people to buy from other retailers. Although their execution of that seems pretty questionable. You were able to pay extra for shipping? I didn't know there was any other shipping choice on Google Play.
A lot of people want this tablet. Does it really matter in the grand scheme of things if your tablet arrives a few days later than someone else? Some people will have theirs tomorrow for sure. If you were able to cancel and then ordered somewhere else it would likely push your arrival date even further than if you just waited for it like everyone else who ordered from Google Play.
Just hang in there, man.

Have fun cancelling, i heard you're going to have to wait for the item to come, refuse shipment, then wait for it to credit back to your account
My issue is if Google is/was able to ship units off to retailers, then why can't they do the same with the preorders? Preorder shipments should have started back when they started shipping units to retailers.
I WANT IT NOW!!
Pre-order means that you reserve your copy so that you are guaranteed a order at release. Not I ordered it on the 28th so I deserve to be the first to get EVERYTHING!!

And don't reply telling me that if you run a business how your customer service should be blah blah blah.. All in all google doesn't owe you anything when they haven't even released a date yet.. They said mid july, its not mid july yet, one more week.

I would be annoyed if the company released a date when they were going to ship and everyone else's was "OFFICIALLY" shipped before mine..
No one has gotten their N7 yet, so until massive people start getting theirs before you do.. Then I can see to be a little frustrated, but just being mad because its not getting here as fast as you want is dumb.
I've ordered from Google but I also ordered yesterday from Ebuyer. The ebuyer should be delivered this morning as it an am delivery.

Thanks for approching the topic with a bit of respect for others situations, and putting logic first. You are right and ill clarify at least in my situation, my biggest thing is that Google has room to improve their Device Launch procedures ALOT. We all want google to succeed and have many more launches, the criticism is both warranted and neccesary to support the growth of the platform we all love. Am i MAD? NO, but i dont think theres anything wrong with honest criticism of the situation, naturally the people with a vested interest are going to be the ones doing the criticising.
I just got my payment credited back for the purchase of my N7. No communication, notice or email....nothing. So I don't even know if I'm gonna get one or not. Oh well....
To me honestly, I don't care if other stores get it before me, no matter where I pre-ordered. I just care about getting it quickly. Your guaranteed to get a copy plus you get free in store credit along with a movie the whole world has seen and doesn't want to see again :/ . You'll get it when you get it

Why such a strange release?

So who has theories on why this release has been limited to such a few sporadic outlets? I mean the Play Store I get since that is Google but why no other major electronics retailers? I would expect at least Best Buy and Fry's to be selling from the brick&mortar front and Buy.com, New Egg and Amazon from the online. Instead we have a few obscure online shops like B&H and some office supply stores? Game Stop seems to be the only one that kind of fits but even that isn't the first place I would think of when looking for new tablet.
Just a thought as we wait...
It's become fairly obvious to me that Google doesn't know what in the world it's doing.

Send it out to all retailers, but have retailers hold stock until launch day. Ship preorders 2 days before launch. Done.
Now the only thing that can unravel this is if some retailers don't hold their stock. That's what seems to be happening, not entirely Google's fault.
Google has no control whatsoever over the distribution since the Nexus 7 wasn't manufactured in-house (read: inside the Google premises) nor distributed by them. ASUS is the manufacturer and all Nexus 7 retail units were distributed through their own supply chain.
The Nexus Q, yes... It's a different story.
This is yet another instance where Apple make Google look like a bunch of rank amateurs. Honestly. I pre-ordered mine on June 29th from the Play Store, assuming that might amount to something!
Here's how google could have done this properly:
Announce that the launch date is a specific date. Let's say July 20th, not 2-3 weeks. Vagueness makes people speculate.
Next, Ship it out to UPS distribution centers and retailers and tell retailers to hold until the 20th. Part of the reason retailers are not following instructions is that anxious people keep bugging them and it's wasting warehouse space for an effectively undetermined amount of time, something that retailers also hate. On July 19th, give the go-ahead to UPS and retailers release on the 20th. Everybody is happy, because everything that was promised was delivered.
This shouldn't have been complicated at all. Pre-ordering with UPS and retailers isn't exactly new.

I total agree that this would have made the launch smoother and easier for consumers. However, Google has many highly paid marketing and logistic professionals at their disposal. Is it just that they keep dropping the ball on Nexus launches or is this by design to artificially generate additional hype and anticipation? I'm wondering if it's some type of marketing strategy itself.
..still can't it out..
It creates buzz..

TLDR; Blame ASUS.
Maybe it just took them longer to link the devices to peoples accounts since other than storage size that is the only difference between buying it in retail and getting it from Google Play.
And I'm sure a big list of people cancelling their orders later to get over the limits of Google's horrible store didn't help because they would then have to undo the linking on those devices.

Yeah, quite frankly, I'm also annoyed. In fact, more than a little annoyed. Unless the Play store gives us some sort of reparation for getting screwed over like this, I'm never pre-ordering or buying from Play ever again. I think a free case is fair compensation for all of us who preordered from Play and got screwed over.
In fact, anyone have a link handy for Play's customer support/service email so I can write them a strongly worded letter? Their "Contact Us" page only has their phone number.

So what is your source that states that Google has no say what so ever in the marketing and release of the flagship product that bears there name? Please don't confuse giving your post no credibility with not being able to read.
Maybe you'd prefer the Apple model... people standing in line for a day or 2, running out on release day and no one able to activate their devices? This is Google's first outing for a branded tablet... give 'em a break. Trust me, it'll be worth the wait.
I preordered mine from GameStop and was told July 31 as the release date...extremely surprised to get it last Friday!

This is normal for Asus.
Heck, the Prime has been out for over 6 months, still cant find one in a retail outlet.
Hopefully it's not as bad and they start getting them out.. Wouldn't hold my breath though.
People will probably have to check nowinstock.net for months to track one down.

Who got a free nexus 7 by canceling

This thread is for people who ordered from the play store and have recieved their orders but cancelled and did not get charged. Do we have any lucky buggers that have managed to net one free because the way google are handling things i wouldnt be suprised if a few hundred slip through their pathetic delivery tracking system.
I doubt that will happen.

I would not be surprised if those people get an invoice and return shipping label in the mail. And then have to choose return or pay. Let alone if it was cancelled and the purchase does not say cancelled in Play store then technically Google covered the terms of the sale and could charge the credit card on file since they could show delivery of said product. Plus in its term of sale it states the cancellation period.
This thread will just bait people to debate. Seems trollish.

Correct, you are not a lawyer.
The "unsolicited goods" laws in some countries (USA for example, which is handled by the FTC) is explicitly written to cover receiving unordered products. It is not for "haha! you sent me something after I cancelled my order so I get to keep it for free!" type scenarios.
So, for example, if you signed up for a free product and they sent you something more with a bill/invoice. Or if you never ordered anything to begin with, but they sent you something and wanted you to pay for it. Or if you receive something (again, not ordered) and it was due to an honest shipping mistake*.
To the latter, you are still supposed to contact the merchant to let them know of the mistake, and give them an opportunity to correct it at zero cost to you (ie: paying for return shipping) within a reasonable amount of time. You can also make it clear that if they don't contact you about it within that time, you will dispose of the product in any manner you see fit.
While this part of it might be a stretch, it could possibly apply here. So if you did actually get an N7 by mistake after cancelling your order, and want to keep it with little risk, I would suggest sending a certified letter to Google with the content above. If they respond back saying to send it to them using a prepaid shipping method, you should do so. Otherwise, while it wouldn't be considered "fraud" since it was their mistake, it could be considered theft of goods, since you did in fact order the product, they still sent it to you due to an honest mistake, they later tried to get it corrected, and you refused.
Or, you could just stay quiet and hope they don't contact you about it - if you are so inclined.
But in the end, if they do contact you to return the merchandise, I would recommend doing so.
On the invoice I received with my order, it had the device's serial number. They knew the device's serial number too, when I rang up and started the RMA process. Google know where each device has been shipped to, so I doubt very much that they'll do nothing and let people keep free tablets. Also, as stated on the support pages, they can remotely disable devices.
I can't wait to fast forward a couple of months, and the "Google just charged my credit card for a tablet I didn't return " threads start.

Silly petition.
If you don't want to pay for shipping, buy it from somewhere that doesn't charge shipping. Pre sale or not you had the choice to order via PS or not. If you do/did, there is a shipping charge...
Nothing new or out of the ordinary there.
Getting very tired of the consumerism use of change.org

Did the people who ordered through the play store have to pay sales tax?

Hang on. No one forced anyone to buy from Google and pay for the shipping. Why didn't those go somewhere else that offered free shipping. Absolute idiots.

I keep getting these stupid emails from Change.org for the most stupid things, and this petition is on that same level.

I really hope a lot of these users weed themselves out of the forums. And I don't appreciate change.org emails about such petty things, just my personal opinion. I feel like if the company doesn't want to give you back the $14, and it's a big deal to you, then you need to accept it. Either realize it's not the end of the world, or never buy another google product. If you have to nag the shipping out of them or coerce them, you can't come back and talk about how you would be mad about the launch but since they volunteered the shipping they're back in your good favor, just because you want to justify using something you complained incessantly about.

It's unfortunately the way most people are nowadays
Silly. Google didn't force anyone to buy it plus the unit price, tax and shipping were clearly itemized and the buyer agreed to it by finalizing the purchase. Petty waste of time.
Can I start a petition about people signing dumbass petitions?

haha!! i would think by now that most of us that pre-order, ie early adopters, should realize that some days we get screwed. its the risk you take as being part of the 'first' crowd. damn us and our first world problems

Well, no, they didn't force anyone to buy a Nexus 7 in the first place, but they did force many people to buy it from them.
Shortly after stores announced that they were going to start selling on Wednesday, Google began refusing to cancel orders. They told people that their unit was being prepared for shipment and it was too late to stop the package. Correct me if I'm wrong, but many of those people who tried to cancel and were denied because their Nexus was on the way didn't actually see their package shipped for another week. Meanwhile, they had to choose between picking up a unit off the shelf or waiting for a package that still had not been declared. Either way they were paying for shipping.
This is a pathetic way to express a legitimate grievance.
This is ridiculous, the shipping amount was clearly listed prior to check out, if you didn't want to pay shipping you should have gotten it somewhere else.

Where are you guys finding them?

I keep seeing people saying that they're getting them, but I guess because I'm in the armpit of the US. I haven't run across one in any of my local stores.
Nowinstock was showing that Wal-Mart recently had them instock, but the website wouldn't let me purchase... I'm having some bad luck!

Gamestops around here.
MacMall.com, Staples, Office Max, Sears.com, Walmart.com, Sams Club, Game Stop. Sears had a 16gb for $239 yesterday I think but it wouldn't come until August.

Same here. Closest thing is Staples 2 hours from me. Was tempted but my pre order is finally due tomorrow. Hoping my patience pays off with a good unit.
Staples - you can check inventory online at nearby stores everyday - very good real-time updates of stock.

Me too. Staples. Followed the stock online and it is very accurate. When you see "not sold in this store", Just means they are out of stock. Keep checking and the same stores will change to "in stock." My store changed late saturday nite and showed in stock Sunday, I bought on Monday, they still had one for a guy on the phone while I was there, and Monday nite it changed to "not sold in this store."
Staples. Like the person above said, you can check in-store stock online. My local store had TWO 16GB ones in stock on Sunday when I checked, so I left immediately and got one
Staples is great. They get the nex7 in everyday on ups shipments. Seems like the average is 1-4 per store. Call around 10-11 and see if they have one.

I found mine at a micro center in my city(Kansas City). Checked online and they said they had 9 left. Called and they said they had 7 left. Then again the area that it was in was wealthier area. Pretty sure everyone in that area had iPads. They could care less about a $200 tablet

Got mine at the MacMall in Torrance, CA. Seems the store there and Huntington Beach have a substantial supply (Huntington had 60 last I checked). In store only, 16gb.
I initially tried the Staples route but there was only one store in Southern California that sold it (Pasadena). Must've annoyed the hell out of them calling everyday. They seem pretty clueless as to when they were expecting shipments.

I got ,one at staples but just got shipping notification from the play store after I tried to cancel. If anyone can't find one I'll sell the extra 16 gig nex7 at cost just to avoid having to refuse shipment and whatnot.

I found one. I had to drive a little over an hour to New Orleans, but I got one. It was a preorder at GameStop that was never picked up!
